Abstract:We provide a new topological obstruction for complete stable minimal hypersurfaces in R^n. For $n\geq 4$, we prove that any complete orientable stable hypersurfaces in R^n has only one end. This follows from a more general analytic theorem we prove in the paper.

Abstract:Considering that the study of neutrino-nucleus interactions with incident neutrino energy ranges in the GeV-TeV range is feasible at the Large Hadron Collider, we investigate in this paper the degree of polarization ${\cal{P}}$ of the (anti) tau lepton produced in (anti) tau neutrino - tungsten interactions. We estimate the differential cross-sections and the longitudinal and transverse components of the tau lepton polarization as a function of the tau lepton energy and distinct values of the scattering angle, assuming different values for the energy of the incoming (anti) tau neutrino. Different models for the treatment of the nuclear effects in the parton distribution functions are assumed as input in the calculations. Our results indicate that $ {\cal{P}} < 1$ for the neutrino energies reached at the LHC and are almost insensitive to the nuclear effects.

Abstract:Anomalous contributions to the electric and magnetic dipole moments of the $\tau$ lepton from new physics scenarios have brought renewed interest in the development of new charge-parity violating signatures in $\tau$-pair production at Belle II energies, and also at higher energies of the Large Hadron Collider and the Future Circular Collider. In this paper, we discuss the effects of spin correlations, including transverse degrees of freedom, in the $\tau$-pair production and decay. These studies include calculating analytical formulas, obtaining numerical results, and building semi-realistic observables sensitive to the transverse spin correlations induced by the dipole moments of the $\tau$ lepton. The effects of such anomalous contributions to the dipole moments are introduced on top of precision simulations of $e^-e^+ \to \tau^-\tau^+$, $q\bar{q} \to \tau^-\tau^+$ and $\gamma\gamma \to \tau^-\tau^+$ processes, involving multi-body final states. The $\tau$ decays are simulated along with radiative corrections, in particular electroweak box contributions of $WW$ and $ZZ$ exchanges are taken into account. Respective extensions of the Standard Model amplitudes and the reweighting algorithms are implemented into the KKMC Monte Carlo, which is used to simulate $\tau$-pair production in $e^-e^+$ collisions, and the TauSpinner program, which is used to reweight events with $\tau$ pair produced in $pp$ collisions.

Abstract:The spectral functions of the vector current and the axial-vector current have been measured in hadronic tau decays using the OPAL detector at LEP. Within the framework of the Operator Product Expansion a simultaneous determination of the strong coupling constant alpha_s, the non-perturbative operators of dimension 6 and 8 and of the gluon condensate has been performed. Different perturbative descriptions have been compared to the data. The Contour Improved Fixed Order Perturbation Theory gives alpha_s(mtau**2) = 0.348 +- 0.009 +- 0.019 at the tau-mass scale and alpha_s(mz**2) = 0.1219 +- 0.0010 +- 0.0017 at the Z-mass scale. The values obtained for alpha_s(mz**2) using Fixed Order Perturbation Theory or Renormalon Chain Resummation are 2.3% and 4.1% smaller, respectively. The running of the strong coupling between s_0 ~1.3 GeV**2 and s_0 = mtau**2 has been tested from direct fits to the integrated differential hadronic decay rate R_tau. A test of the saturation of QCD sum rules at the tau-mass scale has been performed.
Precision $e^-$ Beam Polarimetry at an $e^+e^-$ B Factory using Tau-Pair Events

Abstract:We present a new technique, `Tau Polarimetry', for measuring the longitudinal beam polarization present in an $e^+e^-$ collider through the analysis of $e^+e^-\rightarrow\tau^+\tau^-$ events. By exploiting the sensitivity of $\tau$ decay kinematics to the longitudinal polarization of the beams, we demonstrate that the longitudinal polarization can be measured with a 3 per mil systematic uncertainty at the interaction point using a technique that is independent of spin and beam transport modeling. Using 424.2$\pm$1.8 fb$^{-1}$ of BABAR data at $\sqrt{s}=10.58$ GeV, the average longitudinal polarization of the PEP-II $e^+e^-$ collider has been measured to be $\langle P\rangle=0.0035 \pm 0.0024_{\textrm{stat}}\pm 0.0029_{\textrm{sys}}$. The systematic uncertainty studies are described in detail, which can serve as a guide for future applications of Tau Polarimetry. A proposed $e^-$ beam longitudinal polarization upgrade to the SuperKEKB $e^+e^-$ collider would benefit from this technique.

$τ$-lepton pair spin in proton-proton LHC collisions for anomalous dipole moments

Abstract:The spin correlations in the pair of $\tau$ leptons produced in the high-energy proton-proton collisions are studied. The invariant mass of the $\tau$-lepton pair is chosen close to $Z$-boson mass, in these conditions $Z$-boson exchange gives the dominant contribution to the Drell-Yan mechanism. The interaction of $Z$ boson with $\tau$ lepton, in addition to the Standard Model couplings, can include weak anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments (or form-factors) of the $\tau$ lepton. Dependence of elements of the $pp$ spin-correlation matrix on the weak anomalous moments is determined for various regions of the rapidity of the $\tau$-lepton pair. Based on this calculation, we construct a semi-realistic observable built on the momenta of pions in the $\tau^\mp \to \pi^\mp \nu_\tau$ and $\tau^\pm \to \rho^\pm \nu_\tau \to \pi^\pm \pi^0 \nu_\tau$ decay channels, and show that this observable can be sensitive to the weak anomalous dipole moments.

Abstract:The ALEPH data on hadronic tau-decay is throughly analysed in the framework of QCD. The perturbative calculations are performed in 1-4-loop approximation. The analytical properties of the polarization operators are used in the whole complex q^2 plane. It is shown that the QCD prediction for R_{tau} agrees with the measured value R_{tau} not only for conventional Lambda^{conv}_3 = (618+-29) MeV but as well as for Lambda^{new}_3 = (1666+-7) MeV. The polarization operator calculated using the renormgroup has nonphysical cut [-Lambda^2_3, 0]. If Lambda_3 = Lambda^{conv}_3, the contribution of only physical cut is deficient in the explanation of the ALEPH experiment. If Lambda_3 = Lambda^{new}_3 the contribution of nonphysical cut is very small and only the physical cut explains the ALEPH experiment. The new sum rules which follow only from analytical properties of polarization operators are obtained. Basing on the sum rules obtained, it is shown that there is an essential disagreement between QCD perturbation theory and the tau-lepton hadronic decay experiment at conventional value Lambda_3. In the evolution upwards to larger energies the matching of r(q^2) (Eq.(12)) at the masses J/psi, Upsilon and 2m_t was performed. The obtained value alpha_s(-m^2_z) = 0.141+-0.004 (at Lambda_3 = Lambda^{new}_3) differs essentially from conventional value, but the calculation of the values R(s) = sigma(e+e- -> hadrons)/sigma(e+e- -> mu+mu-), R_l = Gamma(Z -> hadrons)/Gamma(Z -> leptons), alpha_s(-3 GeV^2), alpha_s(-2.5 GeV^2) does not contradict the experiments.

Abstract:The BABAR collaboration has demonstrated the first application of the new Tau Polarimetry technique. This polarimetry technique exploits the kinematic coupling of $\tau$ decay products to the spin states of the $\tau$ and initial state electron, to precisely determine the average beam polarization in an $e^+e^-$ collider. The Tau Polarimetry technique is expected to be used at Belle II following an upgrade to a polarized electron beam, where the precision with which the average beam polarization is known is expected to be the dominant systematic uncertainty in proposed future measurements which require polarized beams. Applying Tau Polarimetry, BABAR has preliminarily measured the PEP-II average beam polarization to be $\langle P\rangle=-0.0010\pm0.0036_{\textrm{stat}}\pm0.0030_{\textrm{sys}}$.

Search for the Electric Dipole Moment of the Tau Lepton at the Super Tau-Charm Facility

Abstract:This study investigates the intrinsic electric dipole moment (EDM) of the $\tau$ lepton, an important quantity in the search for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In preparation for future measurements at the Super Tau-Charm Facility (STCF), this research uses Monte Carlo simulations of the $e^+e^- \rightarrow \tau^+\tau^-$ process and optimizes the methodologies needed to obtain the EDM. Machine learning techniques are utilized to effectively identify signal photons and events, resulting in a significant improvement in signal-to-noise ratio. The event selection algorithm is optimized, achieving signal purity of $80.0\%$ with an efficiency of $6.3\%$. Furthermore, an analytical approach is introduced to solve for the $\tau$ lepton momentum, and accordingly the squared spin density matrix and optimal observables are derived. The relationship between these observables and the EDM is established, with the estimated sensitivity from the $\pi\pi$ channel of $|d_\tau| < 3.49\times 10^{-18}\,e\,\mathrm{cm}$, laying the foundation for future experimental measurements of the $\tau$ lepton EDM in STCF experiments.

Abstract:. An analysis based on 124 000 selected pairs recorded by the ALEPH detector at LEP provides the vector and axial-vector spectral functions of hadronic decays together with their total widths. This allows the evaluation of finite energy chiral sum rules that are weighted integrals over the spectral functions. In addition, a precise measurement of along with a determination of nonperturbative contributions at the mass scale is performed. The experimentally and theoretically most robust determination of is obtained from the fit that yields giving after the extrapolation to the mass of the Z boson. The approach of the Operator Product Expansion (OPE) is tested experimentally studying the evolution of the hadronic widths to masses smaller than the mass.
Measurement of the $τ$ lepton polarization in Z boson decays in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Abstract:The polarization of $\tau$ leptons is measured using leptonic and hadronic $\tau$ lepton decays in Z $\to$ $\tau^+\tau^-$ events in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded by CMS at the CERN LHC with an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb$^{-1}$. The measured $\tau^-$ polarization at the Z boson mass pole is $\mathcal{P}_{\tau}$(Z) = $-$0.144 $\pm$ 0.006 (stat) $\pm$ 0.014 (syst) = $-$0.144 $\pm$ 0.015, in good agreement with the measurement of the $\tau$ lepton asymmetry parameter of $A_{\tau}$ = 0.1439 $\pm$ 0.0043 = $-\mathcal{P}_{\tau}$(Z) at LEP. The $\tau$ polarization depends on the ratio of the vector to axial-vector couplings of the $\tau$ leptons in the neutral current expression, and thus on the effective weak mixing angle $\sin^{2}\theta_\mathrm{W}^{\text{eff}}$, independently of the Z boson production mechanism. The obtained value $\sin^{2}\theta_\mathrm{W}^{\text{eff}}$ = 0.2319 $\pm$ 0.0008 (stat) $\pm$ 0.0018 (syst) = 0.2319 $\pm$ 0.0019 is in good agreement with measurements at e$^+$e$^-$ colliders.

Tau data-driven evaluation of the Hadronic Vacuum Polarization

Abstract:Windows in Euclidean time have become a standard tool for comparing lattice QCD and data-driven computations of the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to the muon $g-2$. Here we review our results, obtained using isospin-rotated $\tau^-\to\pi^-\pi^0\nu_\tau$ data instead of $e^+e^-\to\pi^+\pi^-$ measurements, and compare them to other approaches. Consistency of the tau-based and lattice results hints to underestimated uncertainties in the $e^+e^-$ data. If that is the case, the theory prediction of the muon $g-2$ would only lie at $\sim 2\sigma$ from its measured value.

Abstract:We study the $d^2 \Gamma_d /(d\omega d\cos\theta_d) $, $d\Gamma_d /d\cos\theta_d$ and $ d\Gamma_d /dE_d $ distributions, which are defined in terms of the visible energy and polar angle of the charged particle from the $\tau-$decay in $b\to c \tau\, (\mu \bar \nu_\mu \nu_\tau,\pi \nu_\tau,\rho\nu_\tau) \bar\nu_\tau$ reactions. The first two contain information on the transverse tau-spin, tau-angular and tau-angular-spin asymmetries of the $H_b\to H_c\tau\bar\nu_\tau$ parent decay and, from a dynamical point of view, they are richer than the commonly used one, $d^2 \Gamma_d /(d\omega dE_d) $, since the latter only depends on the tau longitudinal polarization. We pay attention to the deviations with respect to the predictions of the standard model (SM) for these new observables, considering new physics (NP) operators constructed using both right- and left-handed neutrino fields, within an effective field-theory approach. We present results for $\Lambda_b\to\Lambda_c\tau\, (\mu \bar \nu_\mu \nu_\tau,\pi\nu_\tau,\rho\nu_\tau)\bar\nu_\tau$ and $\bar B \to D^{(*)}\tau\, (\mu \bar \nu_\mu \nu_\tau,\pi\nu_\tau,\rho\nu_\tau) \bar\nu_\tau$ sequential decays and discuss their use to disentangle between different NP models. In this respect, we show that $d\Gamma_d /d\cos\theta_d$, which should be measured with sufficiently good statistics, becomes quite useful, especially in the $\tau\to \pi \nu_\tau$ mode. The study carried out in this work could be of special relevance due to the recent LHCb measurement of the lepton flavor universality ratio ${\cal R}_{\Lambda_c}$ in agreement with the SM. The experiment identified the $\tau$ using its hadron decay into $\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-\nu_\tau$, and this result for ${\cal R}_{\Lambda_c}$, which is in conflict with the phenomenology from the $b$-meson sector, needs confirmation from other tau reconstruction channels.

Abstract:The LEP data on four fermion processes are presently used to study the non abelian gauge couplings of the Standard Model. The present theoretical error for two classes of processes, single-W production and radiative four fermion final states, is discussed according to the results of the four fermion working group of the LEP2 Monte Carlo Workshop held at CERN.

Measurement of the Michel Parameters in Leptonic Tau Decays

Abstract:The Michel parameters of the leptonic tau decays are measured using the OPAL detector at LEP. The Michel parameters are extracted from the energy spectra of the charged decay leptons and from their energy-energy correlations. A new method involving a global likelihood fit of Monte Carlo generated events with complete detector simulation and background treatment has been applied to the data recorded at center-of-mass energies close to sqrt(s) = M(Z) corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 155 pb-1 during the years 1990 to 1995. If e-mu universality is assumed and inferring the tau polarization from neutral current data, the measured Michel parameters are extracted. Limits on non-standard coupling constants and on the masses of new gauge bosons are obtained. The results are in agreement with the V-A prediction of the Standard Model.

Analysis note: two-particle correlation in $e^+e^-$ collisions at 91-209 GeV with archived ALEPH data

Abstract:The first measurement of two-particle angular correlations for charged particles produced in $e^+e^-$ annihilation up to $\sqrt{s}$ = 209 GeV is presented. Hadronic $e^+e^-$ data, archived at center-of-mass energies ranging from 91 to 209 GeV, were collected using the ALEPH detector at LEP between 1992 and 2000. The angular correlation functions have been measured across a wide range of pseudorapidities and the full azimuth in bins of charged particle multiplicity. This is the first such measurement using LEP-II data. With LEP-II data at 91 GeV, neither the beam coordinate analysis nor the thrust coordinate analysis reveals significant long-range correlations, consistent with the finding in the previous measurement with the LEP-I sample. Results for $e^+e^-$ data at energies above 91 GeV, which allow for higher event multiplicities reaching approximately 50, are presented for the first time. A long-range near-side excess in the correlation function has been identified in the thrust axis analysis. Moreover, the two-particle correlation functions were decomposed using a Fourier series, and the resulting Fourier coefficients $v_n$ were compared with event generator outputs. In events with high multiplicity, featuring more than 50 particles, the extracted $v_2$ and $v_3$ magnitudes from the data are higher than those from the Monte Carlo reference.
