Abstract:We analyze the photometric information contained in individual pixels of galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field North (HDF-N) using a new technique, pixel-z, that combines predictions of evolutionary synthesis models with photometric redshift template fitting. Each spectral energy distribution template is a result of modeling of the detailed physical processes affecting gas properties and star formation efficiency. The criteria chosen to generate the spectral energy distribution templates is that of sampling a wide range of physical characteristics such as age, star formation rate, obscuration, and metallicity. A key feature of our method is the sophisticated use of error analysis to generate error maps that define the reliability of the template fitting on pixel scales and allow for the separation of the interplay among dust, metallicity, and star formation histories. This technique offers a number of advantages over traditional integrated color studies. As a first application, we derive the star formation and metallicity histories of galaxies in the HDF-N. Our results show that the comoving density of star formation rate, determined from the UV luminosity density of sources in the HDF-N, increases monotonically with redshift out to at least redshift of 5. This behavior can plausibly be explained by a smooth increase of the UV luminosity density with redshift coupled with an increase in the number of star-forming regions as a function of redshift. We also find that the information contained in individual pixels in a galaxy can be linked to its morphological history. Finally, we derive the metal enrichment rate history of the universe and find it in good agreement with predictions based on the evolving H I content of Lyα QSO absorption-line systems.

Abstract:Mean field and exact diagonalization studies on the quasiparticle excitation of an SO(5) symmetric two-leg ladder system are reported. It is shown that the energy gap in the quasiparticle excitation is caused by the formation of rung singlet states. We find that shadow peaks can occur above the Fermi surface with antiferromagnetic electron correlations involving only rungs in the spin ladder.

Abstract:Distant galaxies show correlations between their current star-formation rates (SFRs) and stellar masses, implying that their star-formation histories (SFHs) are highly similar. Moreover, observations show that the UV luminosities and stellar masses grow from z=8 to 3, implying that the SFRs increase with time. We compare the cosmologically averaged evolution in galaxies at 3 < z < 8 at constant comoving number density, n = 2 x 10^-4 Mpc^-3. This allows us to study the evolution of stellar mass and star formation in the galaxy predecessors and descendants in ways not possible using galaxies selected at constant stellar mass or SFR, quantities that evolve strongly in time. We show that the average SFH of these galaxies increase smoothly from z=8 to 3 as SFR ~ t^alpha with alpha = 1.7 +/- 0.2. This conflicts with assumptions that the SFR is either constant or declines exponentially in time. We show that the stellar mass growth in these galaxies is consistent with this derived SFH. This provides evidence that the slope of the high-mass end of the IMF is approximately Salpeter unless the duty cycle of star formation is much less than unity. We argue that these relations follow from gas accretion (either through accretion or delivered by mergers) coupled with galaxy disk growth under the assumption that the SFR depends on the local gas surface density. This predicts that gas fractions decrease from z=8 to 3 on average as f_gas ~ (1+z)^0.9 for galaxies with this number density. The implied galaxy gas accretion rates at z > 4 are as fast and may even exceed the SFR: this is the "gas accretion epoch". At z < 4 the SFR overtakes the implied gas accretion rate, indicating a period where galaxies consume gas faster than it is acquired. At z < 3, galaxies with this number density depart from these relations implying that star formation and gas accretion are slowed at later times.

Abstract:We present individual star formation histories (SFHs) of ∼3000 massive galaxies (log(M * /M ⊙ ) > 10.5) from the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census spectroscopic survey at a lookback time of ∼7 billion yr and quantify the population trends leveraging 20 hr deep-integrated spectra of these ∼1800 star-forming and ∼1200 quiescent galaxies at 0.6 < z < 1.0. Essentially all galaxies at this epoch contain stars of age <3 Gyr, in contrast with older massive galaxies today, facilitating better recovery of previous generations of star formation at cosmic noon and earlier. We conduct spectrophotometric analysis using parametric and nonparametric Bayesian stellar population synthesis modeling tools—Bagpipes and Prospector—to constrain the median SFHs of this mass complete sample and characterize population trends. A consistent picture arises for the late-time stellar mass growth when quantified as t 50 and t 90 , corresponding to the age of the Universe when galaxies formed 50% and 90% of their total stellar mass, although the two methods disagree at the earliest formation times (e.g., t 10 ). Our results reveal trends in both stellar mass and stellar velocity dispersion as in the local Universe—low-mass galaxies with shallower potential wells grow their stellar masses later in cosmic history compared to high-mass galaxies. Unlike local quiescent galaxies, the median duration of late-time star formation (τ SF,late = t 90 –t 50 ) does not consistently depend on the stellar mass. This census sets a benchmark for future deep spectrophotometric studies of the more distant Universe.

Abstract:We present a new method to estimate the average star formation rate per unit stellar mass (SSFR) of a stacked population of galaxies. We combine the spectra of 600-1000 galaxies with similar stellar masses and parametrize the star formation history of this stacked population using a set of exponentially declining functions. The strength of the hydrogen Balmer absorption-line series in the rest-frame wavelength range 3750-4150 angstrom is used to constrain the SSFR by comparing with a library of models generated using the BC03 stellar population code. Our method, based on a principal component analysis, can be applied in a consistent way to spectra drawn from local galaxy surveys and from surveys at z similar to 1, and is only weakly influenced by attenuation due to dust. We apply our method to galaxy samples drawn from Sloan Digital Sky Survey and DEEP2 to study the mass-dependent growth of galaxies from z similar to 1 to 0. We find that (i) high-mass galaxies have lower SSFRs than low-mass galaxies and (ii) the average SSFR has decreased from z=1 to 0 by a factor of similar to 3-4, independent of galaxy mass. Additionally, at z similar to 1, our average SSFRs are a factor of 2-2.5 lower than those derived from multiwavelength photometry using similar data sets. We then compute the average time [in units of the Hubble time, t(H)(z)] needed by galaxies of a given mass to form their stars at their current rate. At both z = 0 and 1, this time-scale decreases strongly with stellar mass from values close to unity for galaxies with masses similar to 10(10) M(circle dot), to more than 10 for galaxies more massive than 10(11) M(circle dot). Our results are in good agreement with models in which active galactic nuclei feedback is more efficient at preventing gas from cooling and forming stars in high-mass galaxies.

Abstract:Star formation history shows a gradual decline since the last 8-9 Gyr (z=1). The bulk of present-day stellar mass and metal content was formed at redshifts lower than 2-3, which is consistent with a hierarchical scenario of galaxy formation. Observations of galaxy evolution during the last 2/3 of the Universe age could be done in great details, and provide numerous insights on the origin of the Hubble diagram. To some extent, the evolution and formation of present-day elliptical and spiral galaxies could be related to the most rapidly evolving galaxy populations at z ~ 1, namely the luminous IR galaxies and the luminous compact galaxies.

Abstract:We analyze star formation (SF) as a function of stellar mass (M_*) and redshift z in the All Wavelength Extended Groth Strip International Survey (AEGIS), for star-forming field galaxies with M_* >~ 10^10 M_sun out to z=1.1. The data indicate that the high specific SF rates (SFR) of many less massive galaxies do not represent late, irregular or recurrent, starbursts in evolved galaxies. They rather seem to reflect the onset (initial burst) of the dominant SF episode of galaxies, after which SF gradually declines on Gyr timescales to z=0 and forms the bulk of a galaxy's M_*. With decreasing mass, this onset of major SF shifts to decreasing z for an increasing fraction of galaxies (staged galaxy formation). This process may be an important component of the ``downsizing'' phenomenon. We find that the predominantly gradual decline of SFR (Noeske et al. 2007, this volume) can be reproduced by exponential SF histories (tau models), if less massive galaxies have systematically longer e-folding times tau, and a later onset of SF (z_f). Our model can provide a first parametrization of SFR as a function of M_* and z, and quantify mass-dependences of tau and z_f, from direct observations of M_* and SFR up to z>1. The observed evolution of SF in galaxies can plausibly reflect the dominance of gradual gas exhaustion. The data are also consistent with the history of cosmological accretion onto Dark Matter halos.

Abstract:We calculate self-consistently the local density of states (LDOS) of a d-wave superconductor considering the scattering of the quasiparticles off randomly distributed impurities and off externally induced vortices. The impurities and the vortices are randomly distributed but the vortices are preferably located near the impurities. The increase of either the impurity repulsive potential or the mpurity density only affects the density of states (DOS) slightly. The dominant effect is due to the vortex scattering. The results for the LDOS agree qualitatively with experimental results considering that most vortices are pinned at the impurities.

Abstract:The evolution of the star formation rate in the Galaxy is one of the key ingredients quantifying the formation and determining the chemical and luminosity evolution of galaxies. Many complementary methods exist to infer the star formation history of the components of the Galaxy, from indirect methods for analysis of low-precision data, to new exact analytic methods for analysis of sufficiently high quality data. We summarise available general constraints on star formation histories, showing that derived star formation rates are in general comparable to those seen today. We then show how colour-magnitude diagrams of volume- and absolute magnitude-limited samples of the solar neighbourhood observed by Hipparcos may be analysed, using variational calculus techniques, to reconstruct the local star formation history. The remarkable accuracy of the data coupled to our maximum-likelihood variational method allows objective quantification of the local star formation history with a time resolution of ~ 50 Myr. Over the past 3Gyr, the solar neighbourhood star formation rate has varied by a factor of ~ 4, with characteristic timescale about 0.5Gyr, possibly triggered by interactions with spiral arms.

Abstract:Unless the nearby universe is subtly anomalous, it should contain a relatively normal selection of galaxies whose histories are representative of field galaxies in general throughout the Universe. We can therefore take advantage of our ability to resolve the nearby galaxies into individual stars to directly, and accurately, measure star formation histories. The star formation histories are determined from model-fitting analysis, based on stellar evolution tracks, of colour-magnitude diagrams. The most accurate information on star formation rates extending back to the earliest epoches can be obtained from the structure of the main sequence. However, the oldest main sequence turnoffs are very faint, and it is often necessary to use the more evolved stars to infer the star formation history. These can then be compared with the properties of galaxies seen over a large range of lookback times at moderate to high redshifts. There is considerable evidence that the faint blue galaxies seen in large numbers in cosmological redshift surveys are the progenitors of the small late-type irregular galaxies seen in copious numbers in the Local Group, and we concentrate on these here.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive multi-wavelength study of 5 poststarburst galaxies with $M_\ast > 10^{11} M_\odot$ at $z\sim 0.7$, examining their stars, gas, and current and past star-formation activities. Using optical images from the Subaru telescope and Hubble Space Telescope, we observe a high incidence of companion galaxies and low surface brightness tidal features, indicating that quenching is closely related to interactions between galaxies. From optical spectra provided by the LEGA-C survey, we model the stellar continuum to derive the star-formation histories and show that the stellar masses of progenitors ranging from $2\times10^9 M_\odot$ to $10^{11} M_\odot$, undergoing a burst of star formation several hundred million years prior to observation, with a decay time scale of $\sim100$ million years. Our ALMA observations detect CO(2-1) emission in four galaxies, with the molecular gas spreading over up to $>1"$, or $\sim10$ kpc, with a mass of up to $\sim2 \times10^{10} M_\odot$. However, star-forming regions are unresolved by either the slit spectra or 3~GHz continuum observed by the Very Large Array. Comparisons between the star-formation rates and gas masses, and the sizes of CO emission and star-forming regions suggest a low star-forming efficiency. We show that the star-formation rates derived from IR and radio luminosities with commonly-used calibrations tend to overestimate the true values because of the prodigious amount of radiation from old stars and the contribution from AGN, as the optical spectra reveal weak AGN-driven outflows.

Abstract:We use SEDz* -- a code designed to chart star formation histories (SFHs) of 6<z<12 galaxies -- to analyze the SEDs of 894 galaxies with deep JWST/NIRCam imaging by JADES in the GOODS-S field. We show how SEDz* matches observed SEDs using stellar-population templates, graphing the contribution of each epoch-by-epoch to confirm the robustness of the technique. Very good SED fits for most SFHs demonstrates the compatibility of the templates with stars in the first galaxies -- as expected, because their light is primarily from main-sequence A-stars, free of post-main-sequence complexity and insensitive to heavy-element compositions. We confirm earlier results from Dressler(2023): (1) Four types of star formation histories: SFH1 -- burst; SFH2 -- stochastic; SFH3 -- `contiguous' (3-epochs); and SFH4 -- `continuous' (4-6 epochs); (2) Starbursts -- both single and multiple -- are predominate (~70%) in this critical period of cosmic history, although longer SFHs (0.5-1.0 Gyr) contribute one-third of the accumulated stellar mass. These 894 SFHs contribute log M/Msun = 11.14, 11.09, 11.00, and 10.60 for SFH1-4, respectively, adding up to 4x10^11 Msun by z=6 for this field. We suggest that the absence of rising SFHs could be explained as an intense dust-enshrouded phase of star formation lasting tens of Myr that preceded each of the SFHs we measure. The recent star formation histories of nearby galaxies on resolved scales

Abstract:Star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies are affected by a variety of factors, both external (field vs. cluster/group) and internal (presence of a bar and AGN, morphological type). In this work, we extend our previous study and apply the <SFR5>/<SFR200> metric to a sample of eleven nearby galaxies with MUSE observations. Based on a combination of H$\alpha$ and UV photometry, <SFR5>/<SFR200> is sensitive to star formation timescales of ~5-200 Myr and therefore measures the present-day rate of change in the star formation rate, dSFR/dt. Within this limited galaxy sample, we do not observe systematic variations between the global value of <SFR5>/<SFR200> and the presence of an active galactic nucleus, stellar bar, nor with group or cluster membership. Within some of the individual galaxies, we however observe significant differences in <SFR5>/<SFR200> between the arm and interarm regions. In half of the galaxies, the recent SFH of both arm and interarm regions has been very similar. However, in the galaxies with higher bulge-to-total light ratios and earlier morphological type, the SFR is declining more rapidly in the interarm regions. This decline in SFR is not a result of low molecular gas surface density or a decrease in the star formation efficiency, implying that other factors are responsible for this SFR decrease.

Abstract:We present a detailed analysis of JWST/NIRSpec and NIRCam observations of ZF-UDS-7329, a massive, quiescent galaxy at redshift $z=3.2$, which has been put forward to challenge cosmology and galaxy formation physics. Our study extends previous works by focusing on the impact of different star formation history (SFH) priors, stellar libraries, metallicity, and initial mass function assumptions. Our results show that ZF-UDS-7329, with a formed stellar mass of $M_{\star} \approx 10^{11.4}~M_{\odot}$ and a specific star formation rate of $\mathrm{sSFR} \approx 0.03$ Gyr$^{-1}$, formed efficiently in the first billion years of the Universe. In agreement with previous work, we find that the spectrum is consistent with mass-weighted stellar ages of $1.3-1.8$ Gyr, depending on the SFH prior used. A physically motivated rising SFH prior makes the formation history of ZF-UDS-7329 compatible with stellar mass and star-formation rate estimates of high-redshift ($z>6$) galaxies. Using NIRCam imaging, we identify a colour gradient indicative of an old, quiescent bulge and a younger disc component, as expected from a complex formation history. The inferred SFH is consistent a high stellar fraction of $f_{\star}=M_{\star}/(f_b \cdot M_{\rm h}) \approx 100\%$ at $z=7-12$, implying an extremely high integrated star-formation efficiency. However, when considering cosmic variance and possible mergers as expected in over-dense environments - as traced by ZF-UDS-7329 - the stellar fractions could be reduced to $f_{\star} \approx 50\%$, which is more consistent with galaxy formation models and the stellar-to-halo mass relation at lower redshifts. We conclude that ZF-UDS-7329 forms extremely efficient in the early universe, but does not necessitate unseen galaxies at higher redshifts since the inferred SFR of ancestors are consistent with those seen in $z>6$ galaxies.

Star Formation Histories of Dwarf Lenticular Galaxies

Abstract:Star formation histories (SFHs) are essential for understanding galaxy formation and evolution. We present the mean SFHs of 148 dwarf lenticular galaxies (dS0s) derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectra. These SFHs reveal two distinct periods of active star formation. The first period, concluding approximately 6 Gyr ago, witnessed the formation of predominantly old, metal-poor (Z=0.0004) stars, accounting for approximately 60\% of the stellar mass and 30\% of the luminosity. The scarcity of extremely metal-poor (Z=0.0001) stars suggests pre-enrichment during the re-ionization era. Star formation gradually waned during this initial phase. In contrast, the second period, ending around 1 Gyr ago, exhibited a peak in the middle of the period, contributing to the formation of moderately old stellar populations with intermediate metallicity. The SFHs of dS0 galaxies show a clear dependence on stellar mass, with more massive dS0s forming stars earlier. But, we find no significant correlation with morphological properties such as outer spiral arms and nucleation. The SFHs of dS0 galaxies share many similarities with those of dE galaxies, suggesting a common origin, mostly not primordial.

Abstract:We explore star-formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies based on the evolution of the star-formation rate stellar mass relation (SFR-M*). Using data from the FourStar Galaxy Evolution Survey (ZFOURGE) in combination with far-IR imaging from the Spitzer and Herschel observatories we measure the SFR-M* relation at 0.5 < z < 4. Similar to recent works we find that the average infrared SEDs of galaxies are roughly consistent with a single infrared template across a broad range of redshifts and stellar masses, with evidence for only weak deviations. We find that the SFR-M* relation is not consistent with a single power-law of the form SFR ~ M*^a at any redshift; it has a power-law slope of a~1 at low masses, and becomes shallower above a turnover mass (M_0) that ranges from 10^9.5 - 10^10.8 Msol, with evidence that M_0 increases with redshift. We compare our measurements to results from state-of-the-art cosmological simulations, and find general agreement in the slope of the SFR-M* relation albeit with systematic offsets. We use the evolving SFR-M* sequence to generate SFHs, finding that typical SFRs of individual galaxies rise at early times and decline after reaching a peak. This peak occurs earlier for more massive galaxies. We integrate these SFHs to generate mass-growth histories and compare to the implied mass-growth from the evolution of the stellar mass function. We find that these two estimates are in broad qualitative agreement, but that there is room for improvement at a more detailed level. At early times the SFHs suggest mass-growth rates that are as much as 10x higher than inferred from the stellar mass function. However, at later times the SFHs under-predict the inferred evolution, as is expected in the case of additional growth due to mergers.

Abstract:The galaxy-integrated star formation rate (SFR) surface density measurement ($ SFR $) has been proposed as a valuable diagnostic of the mass accumulation in galaxies given it is more tightly related to the physics of star formation and stellar feedback than other indicators. In this work, we assembled a statistical sample of $230$ galaxies observed with JWST in the GLASS and CEERS spectroscopic surveys to estimate Balmer line-based dust attenuations and SFRs (i.e., from Halpha , Hbeta , and Hgamma ), along with the UV rest-frame effective radii. We studied the evolution of galaxy SFR and $ SFR $ in the first $1.5$ billion years of our Universe, from a redshift of $z to $z We found that $ SFR $ is mildly increasing with redshift with a linear slope of $0.16 0.06$. We explored the dependence of SFR and $ SFR $ on stellar mass, showing that a star-forming main sequence and a $ SFR $ main sequence are present out to $z=10$. This dependence exhibits a similar slope compared to the same relations at lower redshifts, but with a higher normalization. We find that the specific SFR (sSFR) and $ SFR $ are correlated with the ratio and with indirect estimates of the escape fraction of Lyman continuum photons; hence, they are likely to play an important role in the evolution of ionization conditions at higher redshifts and in the escape of ionizing radiation. We also searched for spectral outflow signatures in the Halpha and emission lines in a subset of galaxies observed at high resolution (R$=2700$) by the GLASS survey, finding an outflow incidence of $2/11$ 32 9 $) at $z 6$ ($0/6$, $<26 $). Finally, we find a positive correlation between A$_V$ and $ SFR $, and a flat trend as a function of sSFR, indicating that there is no evidence of a drop in A$_V$ in extremely star-forming galaxies between $z 4$ and $ 10$. This result might be at odds with a dust-clearing outflow scenario, which may instead take place at redshifts of $z 10$, as suggested by some theoretical models.

Abstract:We investigate the relation between the star formation rate (SFR) and the stellar mass (M), i.e. the Main Sequence (MS) relation of star-forming galaxies, at 1.3<=z<6 in the first four HST Frontier Fields, based on rest-frame UV observations. Gravitational lensing combined with deep HST observations allows us to extend the analysis of the MS down to stellar masses as low as logM/Msun~7.5 at z<~4 and logM/Msun~8 at higher redshifts, a factor of ~10 below most previous results. We perform an accurate simulation to take into account the effect of observational uncertainties on the MS and correct for the Eddington bias. This step allows us to reliably measure the MS and in particular its slope. While the normalization increases with redshift, we fit an unevolving and approximately linear slope. We nicely extend to lower masses the results of brighter surveys. Thanks to the large dynamic range in mass and by making use of the simulation, we analyzed any possible mass dependence of the dispersion around the MS. We find tentative evidence that the scatter decreases with increasing stellar masses, suggesting a larger variety of star formation histories in low mass galaxies. This trend agrees with theoretical predictions, and is explained as either a consequence of the smaller number of progenitors of low mass galaxies in a hierarchical scenario and/or of the efficient but intermittent stellar feedback processes in low mass halos. Finally, we observe an increase in the SFR per unit stellar mass with redshift milder than predicted by theoretical models, implying a still incomplete understanding of the processes responsible for galaxy growth.
