Abstract:We present HST RXTE, and UKIRT observations of the broad-band spectra of the black hole X-ray transient XTE J1859+226 during the decline from its 1999-2000 outburst. Our UV spectra define the 2175-Angstrom interstellar absorption feature very well and based on its strength we estimate E(B-V) = 0.58+/-0.12. Hence we deredden our spectra and follow the evolution of the spectral energy distribution on the decline from outburst. We find that the UV and optical data, and the X-ray thermal component when detectable, can be fitted with a simple blackbody model of an accretion disc heated by internal viscosity and X-ray irradiation, and extending to close to the last stable orbit around the black hole, although the actual inner radius cannot be well constrained. During, the decline we see the disc apparently evolving from a model with the edge dominated by irradiative heating, towards one where viscous heating is dominant everywhere. The outer disc radius also appears to decrease during the decline; we interpret this as evidence of a cooling wave moving inwards and discuss its implications for the disc instability model. Based on the normalization of our spectral fits we estimate a likely distance range of 4.6-8.0 kpc, although a value outside this range cannot securely be ruled out.
X-Ray Observations of the Black Hole Transient 4U 1630-47 During Two Years of X-Ray Activity

Abstract:The black hole candidate (BHC) X-ray transient 4U 1630-47 continuously produced strong X-ray emission for over 2 years during 2002-2004. We use observations made with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) to study the source throughout the outburst along with hard X-ray images from the INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL). The source exhibits extreme behaviors, including measured inner disk temperatures (Tin) between 2.7 and 3.8 keV, which are only rivaled by the brightest BHC systems. If the high temperatures are caused by the dominance of electron scattering opacity in the inner regions of the accretion disk, a luminosity >20% of the Eddington limit is theoretically required. We detect several types of variability, including hard 10-100 s flares at the highest disk luminosities in a regime where the source deviates from the Ldisk/Tin relationship that is seen at lower luminosities, possibly suggesting that we are seeing transitions between a standard disk and a "slim" disk. The X-ray properties in 2002-2004 are significantly different from those seen during the 1998 outburst, which is the only outburst with detected radio jet emission. Our results support the "jet-line" concept recently advanced by Fender and co-workers. Our study allows for a test of the quantitative McClintock & Remillard spectral state definitions. We also report on detections of the nearby sources IGR J16320-4751 and IGR J16358-4726.

Abstract:The transient black hole binary XTE J1118+480 exhibited dramatic rapid variability at all wavelengths which were suitably observed during its 2000 April-July outburst. We examine time-resolved X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, and infrared data spanning the plateau phase of the outburst. We find that both X-ray and infrared bands show large amplitude variability. The ultraviolet and optical variability is more subdued, but clearly correlated with that seen in the X-rays. The ultraviolet, at least, appears to be dominated by the continuum, although the lines are also variable. Using the X-ray variations as a reference point, we find that the UV variability at long wavelengths occurs later than that at short wavelengths. Uncertainty in HST timing prohibits a determination of the absolute lag with respect to the X-rays, however. The transfer function is clearly not a delta-function, exhibiting significant repeatable structure. For the main signal we can rule out an origin in reprocessing on the companion star - the lack of variation in the lags is not consistent with this given a relatively high orbital inclination. Weak reprocessing from the disc and/or companion star may be present, but is not required, and another component must dominate the variability. This could be variable synchrotron emission correlated with X-ray variability, consistent with our earlier interpretation of the IR flux as due to synchrotron emission rather than thermal disc emission. In fact the broad-band energy distribution of the variability from IR to X-rays is consistent with expectations of optically thin synchrotron emission. We also follow the evolution of the low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillation in X-rays, UV, and optical. Its properties at all wavelengths are similar indicating a common origin.

Abstract:RXTE has recently discovered two newoptically bright black hole candidates (BHCs): XTE J1859+226 andXTE J1118+480. We observed both with HST /STIS, the firstoutburst observations of X-ray novae with this instrument. We followed broad band spectral evolution, detectedcorrelated X-ray/UV rapid variability and performed high resolution UVspectroscopy. We present a summary ofinitial results on the spectral energy distributions observed.

Abstract:We report multiwavelength observations of the soft X-ray transient XTE J1118+480, which we observed with UKIRT, Hubble Space Telescope (HST), RXTE, Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) and many other instruments and facilities. Adding radio (Ryle Telescope, VLA), submillimetre (JCMT) and X-ray (Chandra and SAX) data from the literature, we assembled the most complete spectral energy distribution (SED) of this source yet published. We followed the evolution of this source for 1 yr, including six observations performed during the outburst, and one observation at the end of the outburst. Because of the unusually high galactic latitude of XTE J1118+480, it suffers from very low extinction, and its SED is nearly complete, including extreme ultraviolet observations. XTE J1118+480 exhibits an unusually low low/hard state (estimated inner radius of 350R s ) and a strong non-thermal contribution in the radio to optical domain, which is likely to be due to synchrotron emission. We discuss the interstellar column density and show that it is low, between 0.80 and 1.30 x 10 2 0 cm - 2 . We analyse the evolution of the SED during the outburst, including the contributions from the companion star, the accretion disc, the outflow, and relating irradiation and variability of the source in different bands to the SED. We find no significant spectral variability during the outburst evolution, consistent with the presence of a steady outflow. An analysis of its outflow to accretion energy ratio suggests that the microquasar XTE J1118+480 is analogous to radio-quiet quasars. This, combined with the inverted spectrum from radio to optical, makes XTE J 1118+480 very similar to other microquasar sources, e.g. GRS 1915+105 and GX 339-4 in their low/hard state. We model the high-energy emission with a hot disc model, and discuss different accretion models for the broad-band spectrum of XTE J1118+480.
GRO J1655-40: Early Stages of the 2005 Outburst

Abstract:The black-hole X-ray binary transient GRO J1655-40 underwent an outburst beginning in early 2005. We present the results of our multi-wavelength observational campaign to study the early outburst spectral and temporal evolution, which combines data from X-ray (RXTE, INTEGRAL), radio (VLA) and optical (ROTSE, SMARTS) instruments. During the reported period the source left quiescence and went through four major accreting black hole states: low-hard, hard intermediate, soft intermediate and high-soft. We investigated dipping behavior in the RXTE band and compare our results to the 1996-1997 case, when the source was predominantly in the high-soft state, finding significant differences. We consider the evolution of the low frequency quasi-periodic oscillations and find that the frequency strongly correlates with the spectral characteristics, before shutting off prior to the transition to the high-soft state. We model the broad-band high-energy spectrum in the context of empirical models, as well as more physically motivated thermal and bulk-motion Comptonization and Compton reflection models. RXTE and INTEGRAL data together support a statistically significant high energy cut-off in the energy spectrum at 100~200 keV during the low-hard state. The RXTE data alone also show it very significantly during the transition, but cannot see one in the high-soft state spectra. We consider radio, optical and X-ray connections in the context of possible synchrotron and synchrotron self-Compton origins of X-ray emission in low-hard and intermediate states. In this outburst of GRO J1655-40, the radio flux does not rise strongly with the X-ray flux.

X-ray Spectral and Timing Properties of the Black Hole Binary XTE J1859+226 and their Relation to Jets

Abstract:We compiled the X-ray and soft gamma-ray observations of the Galactic black hole binary XTE J1859+226 in the 1999--2000 outburst from RXTE, ASCA, BeppoSAX and CGRO. Throughout systematic spectral analysis using a two-component model consisting of a multi-temperature accretion disk plus a fraction of its flux convolved with an empirical Comptonized powerlaw component, we found that the innermost radius ($r_{\rm in}$) and temperature (Tin) of the disk are very variable with time in the rising phase of soft X-ray flux where Type-A/B/C low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) were found. After this phase, $r_{\rm in}$ remains constant at around 60 km assuming a distance of 8 kpc and an inclination angle of 67$^{\circ}$, and Tin smoothly decays with time. The constant $r_{\rm in}$ suggests a presence of the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO), with $r_{\rm in}$ repeatedly moving closer and farther away from the ISCO in the rising phase. Both disk parameters are remarkably correlated with independently analyzed timing properties such as QPO frequency and rms variability. Type-A/B QPOs are seen only when $r_{\rm in}$ is close to the ISCO, while Type-C are seen when $r_{\rm in}$ is truncated and the frequency changes with a relation of $r^{-1.0}_{\rm in}$, supporting that Type-C QPOs occur at the inner edge of the truncated disk. Accurate determinations of the frequency--$r_{\rm in}$ relation for various objects should be a powerful tool to discriminate plausible Type-C QPO models. Furthermore, we suggest that jet ejection events may occur when $r_{\rm in}$ rapidly approaches to the ISCO, along with rapid changes of the disk flux, the rms variability and the hardness ratio. A rapid shrinkage of $r_{\rm in}$ down to the ISCO can be a useful index as a precursor of radio flares for triggering Target-of-Opportunity observations and would provide constraints on jet launching mechanisms.

Abstract:We report here on multiwavelength observations of the two new soft X-ray transients (SXTs) XTE J1859+226 and XTE J1118+480, which we observed with HST/RXTE/UKIRT. For XTE J1118+480 we also used EUVE since it is located at a very high galactic latitude and suffers from very low extinction. The two sources exhibited very different behaviour. XTE J1859+226 seems quite normal and therefore a good object for testing the accretion mechanisms in place during the outbursts, XTE J1118+480 is much more unusual because it exhibits i) a low X-ray to optical ratio and ii) a strong non-thermal contribution in the radio to optical domain, which is likely to be due to synchrotron emission. We concentrate here on the near-infrared (NIR) and optical observations of these two systems.

Abstract:We report on the X-ray spectral behavior of the exceptionally bright X-ray nova XTE J1550-564 during its 1998-99 outburst. Our study is based on 209 pointed observations using the PCA and HEXTE instruments onboard the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer spanning 250 days and covering the entire double-peaked eruption that occurred from 1998 September until 1999 May. The spectra are fit to a model including multicolor blackbody disk and power-law components. The source is observed in the very high and high/soft outburst states of black hole X-ray novae. During the very high state, when the power-law component dominated the spectrum, the inner disk radius is observed to vary by more than an order of magnitude; the radius decreased by a factor of 16 in one day during a 6.8 Crab flare. If the larger of these observed radii is taken to be the last stable orbit, then the smaller observed radius would imply that the inner edge of the disk is inside the event horizon! However, we conclude that the apparent variations of the inner disk radius observed during periods of increased power-law emission are probably caused by the failure of the multicolor disk/power-law model; the actual physical radius of the inner disk may remain fairly constant. This interpretation is supported by the fact that the observed inner disk radius remains approximately constant over 120 days in the high state, when the power-law component is weak, even though the disk flux and total flux vary by an order of magnitude. The mass of the black hole inferred by equating the approximately constant inner disk radius observed in the high/soft state with the last stable orbit for a Schwarzschild black hole is M_BH = 7.4 M_sun (D/6 kpc) (cos i)^-1/2.

Abstract:Black hole (BH) X-ray binaries (XRBs) are ideal targets to study the connection between accretion inflow and jet outflow. Here we present quasi-simultaneous, multiwavelength observations of the Galactic BH system MAXI J1820+070, throughout its 2018–2019 outburst. Our data set includes coverage from the radio through X-ray bands from 17 different instruments/telescopes, and encompasses 19 epochs over a 7 month period, resulting in one of the most well-sampled multiwavelength data sets of a BH XRB outburst to date. With our data, we compile and model the broadband spectra of this source using a phenomenological model that includes emission from the jet, a companion star, and an accretion flow. This modeling allows us to track the evolution of the spectral break in the jet spectrum, a key observable that samples the jet launching region. We find that the spectral break location changes over at least ≈3 orders of magnitude in electromagnetic frequency over this period. Using these spectral break measurements, we link the full cycle of jet behavior, including the rising, quenching, and reignition, to the changing accretion flow properties as the source evolves through its different accretion states. Our analysis shows consistent jet behavior with other sources in similar phases of their outbursts, reinforcing the idea that jet quenching and recovery may be a global feature of BH XRB systems in outburst. Our results also provide valuable evidence supporting a close connection between the geometry of the inner accretion flow and the base of the jet.

Abstract:We present multiwavelength observations of the newly discovered X-ray transient XTE J1118+480 obtained in the rising phase of the 2000 April outburst. This source is located at unusually high Galactic latitude and in a very low absorption line of sight. This made the first Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) spectroscopy of an X-ray transient outburst possible, Together with our Hubble Space Telescope, Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer, and United Kingdom Infrared Telescope data, this gives unprecedented spectral coverage. We find the source in the low hard state. The flat IR-UV continuum appears to be a combination of optically thick disk emission and possibly synchrotron, while at higher energies (including; EUV), a typical low hard state power law is seen. EUVE observations reveal no periodic modulation, suggesting an inclination low enough that no obscuration by the disk rim occurs. We discuss the nature of the source and this outburst and conclude that it may be more akin to minioutbursts seen in GRO J0422+32 than to a normal X-ray transient outburst.

Abstract:XTE J1908+094 is an X-ray transient that went into outburst in February 2002. After two months it reached a 2-250 keV peak flux of 1 to 2 X 10-8 erg/s/cm2. Circumstantial evidence points to an accreting galactic black hole as the origin of the the X-radiation: pulsations nor thermonuclear flashes were detected that would identify a neutron star and the spectrum was unusually hard for a neutron star at the outburst onset. We report on BeppoSAX and RXTE All Sky Monitor observations of the broad-band spectrum of XTE J1908+094. The spectrum is consistent with a model consisting of a Comptonization component by a ~40 keV plasma (between 2 and 60 keV this component can be approximated by a power law with a photon index of 1.9 to 2.1), a multicolor accretion disk blackbody component with a temperature just below 1 keV and a broad emission line at about 6 keV. The spectrum is heavily absorbed by cold interstellar matter with an equivalent hydrogen column density of 2.5 X 10+22 cm-2, which makes it difficult to study the black body component in detail. The black body component exhibits strong evolution about 6 weeks into the outburst. Two weeks later this is followed by a swift decay of the power law component. The broadness of the 6 keV feature may be due to relativistic broadening or Compton scattering of a narrow Fe-K line.

Abstract:One normal outburst and three mini‐outbursts have been detected by Rossi X‐ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite after 2000 in the well‐known black hole X‐ray binary XTE J1550‐564. In our work, we explored the energy spectral properties of the four outbursts and the three mini‐outbursts retained in the Low/Hard state. The results show that the X‐ray spectra of the three mini‐outbursts are harder than that of normal outburst and have no disk component. In the correlation analysis, the Γ−LX/LEdd anti‐relationship of the three mini‐outbursts suggested that it may be a result of the incomplete evolutionary success of Shakura‐Sunyaev disk. The whole X‐ray spectral correlation evolution shows well the state transition from the Shakura‐Sunyaev disk to the advection‐dominated accretion flow. We think that the three mini‐outbursts may originated from a small discrete accretion event.

An Extreme Black Hole in the Recurrent X-ray Transient XTE J2012+381

Abstract:The black hole candidate XTE J2012+381 underwent an outburst at the end of 2022. We analyzed 105 NICER observations and 2 NuSTAR observations of the source during the outburst. The NuSTAR observations of the $M \sim10M_\odot$ black hole indicate clear signs of relativistic disk reflection, which we modeled to measure a BH spin of $a=0.988^{+0.008}_{-0.030}$ and an inclination of $\theta=68^{+6}_{-11}$ degrees ($1\sigma$ statistical errors). In our analysis, we test an array of models and examine the effect of fitting NuSTAR spectra alone versus fitting simultaneously with NICER. We find that when the underlying continuum emission is properly accounted for, the reflected emission is similarly characterized by multiple models. We combined 52 NICER spectra to obtain a spectrum with an effective exposure of 190 ks in order to probe the presence of absorption lines that would be suggestive of disk winds, but the resulting features were not statistically significant. We discuss the implications of this measurement in relation to the overall BH spin distribution in X-ray binary systems.

Rxte Observations of a New X-Ray Transient: GRS 1737-31

Abstract:We present the results from RXTE observations of a new X-ray transient, GRS 1737-31, near the Galactic center during an outburst. Over a span of 2 weeks, the source was seen to vary significantly on timescales down to a few seconds. The rapid flares in the light curves bear resemblance to those observed for Cygnus X-l, a well-known black hole candidate (BHC). The power-density spectrum is also very typical of BHCs in the hard (or low) state: it is flat below a characteristic break frequency of about 0.03 Hz and becomes roughly a 1/f power law above. The observed X-ray spectrum can be characterized by a simple power law with a photon index of about 1.7 over a broad energy range 2-200 keV, which is remarkably similar to that of Cyg X-l in the hard state. The similarities to Cyg X-l make GRS 1737-31 a likely BHC. However, unlike most transient BHCs, GRS 1737-31 does not seem to reach a ''soft state'' even during an outburst. We discuss this phenomenon in light of the comparison to a class of hard X-ray BHCs, including transients GRO J0422+32, V404 Cyg, and GRO J1719-24, and persistent sources 1E1740.7-2942 and GRS 1758-258.
An Optically-Discovered Outburst from XTE J1859+226

Abstract:Using the Zwicky Transient Facility, in 2021 February we identified the first known outburst of the Black Hole X-ray Transient XTE J1859+226 since its discovery in 1999. The outburst was visible at X-ray, UV, and optical wavelengths for less than 20 days, substantially shorter than its 320-day full outburst in 1999, and the observed peak luminosity was two orders of magnitude lower. Its peak bolometric luminosity was only $2\times 10^{35}$ erg s$^{-1}$, implying an Eddington fraction of about $3\times10^{-4}$. The source remained in the hard spectral state throughout the outburst. From optical spectroscopy measurements we estimate an outer disk radius of 10$^{11}$ cm. The low observed X-ray luminosity is not sufficient to irradiate the entire disk, but we observe a surprising exponential decline in the X-ray lightcurve. These observations highlight the potential of optical and infrared (O/IR) synoptic surveys to discover low-luminosity activity from X-ray transients.

Abstract:Black hole X-ray binaries are ideal environments to study the accretion phenomena in strong gravitational potentials. These systems undergo dramatic accretion state transitions and analysis of the X-ray spectra is used to probe the properties of the accretion disc and its evolution. In this work, we present a systematic investigation of $\sim$1800 spectra obtained by RXTE PCA observations of GRO J1655-40 and LMC X-3 to explore the nature of the accretion disc via non-relativistic and relativistic disc models describing the thermal emission in black-hole X-ray binaries. We demonstrate that the non-relativistic modelling throughout an outburst with the phenomenological multi-colour disc model DISKBB yields significantly lower and often unphysical inner disc radii and correspondingly higher ($\sim$50-60\%) disc temperatures compared to its relativistic counterparts KYNBB and KERRBB. We obtained the dimensionless spin parameters of $a_{*}=0.774 \pm 0.069 $ and $a_{*}=0.752 \pm 0.061 $ for GRO J1655-40 with KERRBB and KYNBB, respectively. We report a spin value of $a_{*}=0.098 \pm 0.063$ for LMC X-3 using the updated black hole mass of 6.98 ${M_{\odot}}$. Both measurements are consistent with the previous studies. Using our results, we highlight the importance of self-consistent modelling of the thermal emission, especially when estimating the spin with the continuum-fitting method which assumes the disc terminates at the innermost stable circular orbit at all times.

Abstract:The mini‐outburst of black hole X‐ray binaries (BHXBs) is a re‐bright event of light curve, which is often detected in BHXBs with the low orbital period, such as XTE J1650‐500 (Porb≈7.69±0.02hr ), GRO J0422+32 (Porb≈5.091850±0.000005hr ) and Swift J1753.5‐0127 (Porb≈3.244±0.001hr ). Because of its low X‐ray luminosity, the physics properties of mini‐outburst is still unclear. GX 339‐4 is a famous BHXBs with the orbital period Porb=16.9hr and present many normal outburst and failed outburst over the past decades. However, the mini‐outburst is not still detected in GX 339‐4. In this work, using the Rossi X‐ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations, we investigated the energy spectrum properties of the GX 339‐4 outburst in 2004 and confirmed that the outburst in 2004 is a mini‐outburst. It is very interest that the mini‐outburst has been through a whole state transition from Low/Hard state to High/Soft state. We also give a comparison between the normal outburst in 2002 and the mini‐outburst in 2004. And we find that the two outburst present a similar Hardness‐Intensity diagram and spectral properties, which suggest that the normal outburst and mini‐outburst have a similar physics. We think that the mini‐outburst of GX 339‐4 in 2004 can be well explained by the disk instability model.

Abstract:We analyze 11 Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array and Swift observations of the black hole X-ray binary GX. 339-4. in the hard state, 6 of which were taken during the end of the 2015 outburst and 5 during a failed outburst in 2013. These observations cover luminosities from 0.5% to 5% of the Eddington luminosity. Implementing the most recent version of the reflection model relxillCp, we perform simultaneous spectral fits on both data sets to track the evolution of the properties in the accretion disk, including the inner edge radius, the ionization, and the temperature of the thermal emission. We also constrain the photon index and electron temperature of the primary source (the "corona"). We observe a maximum truncation radius of 37 R-g in the preferred fit for the 2013 data set, and a marginal correlation between the level of truncation and luminosity. We also explore a self-consistent model under the framework of coronal Comptonization, and find consistent results regarding the disk truncation in the 2015 data, providing a more physical preferred fit for the 2013 observations.
Black Hole Spin in X-Ray Binaries: Observational Consequences

Abstract:We discuss the observational consequences of black hole spin in X-ray binaries within the framework of the standard thin accretion disk model. When compared with theoretical flux distribution from the surface of a thin disk surrounding a Kerr black hole, the observed X-ray properties of the Galactic superluminal jet sources, GRO J1655-40 and GRS 1915+105, strongly suggest that each contains a black hole spinning rapidly in the same direction as the accretion disk. We show, however, that some other black hole binaries with an ultrasoft X-ray component probably harbor only non- or slowly spinning black holes, and we argue that those with no detectable ultrasoft component above 1-2 keV in their high luminosity state may contain a fast-spinning black hole but with a retrograde disk. Therefore, all classes of known black hole binaries are united within one scheme. Furthermore, we explore the possibility that spectral state transitions in Cyg X-1 are simply due to temporary disk reversal, which can occur in a wind accretion system.
