Abstract:A model of Lyman limit QSO absorption systems is investigated where they are produced in gaseous galactic halos with a two-phase structure: a hot phase at the halo virial temperature in approximate pressure equilibrium, and a cold, photoionized phase in the form of clouds confined by the pressure of the hot medium, and falling through it to the halo center. We show that the masses of these clouds must be over a relatively narrow range so that they are stable against gravitational collapse and evaporation. These masses, near $10^6 \msun$, also lead to a covering factor near unity. The hot phase is required to have a core radius such that its cooling time in the core is equal to the age of the halo, and the mass in the cold phase is determined by the rate at which the hot gas cools. We calculate the number of Lyman limit systems arising in halos of different masses in a CDM model and their impact parameters implied by these assumptions, and find them to be in reasonable agreement with observations. The observed low ionization systems such as MgII are well reproduced as arising from the photoionized phase, and are mostly in halos around massive galaxies, while CIV selected systems are predicted to be more commonly associated with lower mass galaxies and larger impact parameters. The hot phase may give rise to detectable absorption lines in OVI, while the column densities predicted for other highly ionized species are low and difficult to observe.

Abstract:Currently, multiple emulsions via liquid–liquid phase separation in ternary polymer solutions have sparked considerable interest because of its remarkable potential in physical, medical, and biological applications. The transient "onion-like" multilayers are highly dependent on the evolution kinetics, which is challenging to be scrutinized in experiments and has not yet been fully understood. Here, we report a thermodynamically consistent multicomponent Cahn–Hilliard model to investigate the kinetics of multiple emulsions by tracing the temporal evolution of the local compositions inside the emulsion droplets. We reveal that the mechanism governing the kinetics is attributed to the competition between surface energy minimization and phase separation. Based on this concept, a generalized morphology diagram for different emulsion patterns is achieved, showing a good accordance with previous experiments. Theories of Binary Fluid Mixtures: From Phase-Separation Kinetics to Active Emulsions

Abstract:Binary fluid mixtures are examples of complex fluids whose microstructure and flow are strongly coupled. For pairs of simple fluids, the microstructure consists of droplets or bicontinuous demixed domains and the physics is controlled by the interfaces between these domains. At continuum level, the structure is defined by a composition field whose gradients which are steep near interfaces drive its diffusive current. These gradients also cause thermodynamic stresses which can drive fluid flow. Fluid flow in turn advects the composition field, while thermal noise creates additional random fluxes that allow the system to explore its configuration space and move towards the Boltzmann distribution. This article introduces continuum models of binary fluids, first covering some well-studied areas such as the thermodynamics and kinetics of phase separation, and emulsion stability. We then address cases where one of the fluid components has anisotropic structure at mesoscopic scales creating nematic (or polar) liquid-crystalline order; this can be described through an additional tensor (or vector) order parameter field. We conclude by outlining a thriving area of current research, namely active emulsions, in which one of the binary components consists of living or synthetic material that is continuously converting chemical energy into mechanical work.

Disentangling kinetics from thermodynamics in heterogeneous colloidal systems

Abstract:Nucleation and growth (N&G) - the emergence of a new phase within an initially homogeneous one - is one of the most important physical phenomena by which gas-liquid, liquid-liquid and solid-liquid phase separation takes place. Accordingly, thermodynamics sets the asymptotic boundaries towards which the system must evolve, while kinetics tries to cope with it by imposing the transport rates at which phase separation is realized. In all heterogeneous colloidal systems observed in nature, the composition, shape, structure and ultimately physical properties result from the trade-off between thermodynamics and kinetics. In this work we demonstrate, by carefully selecting colloidal systems and controlling phase separation in microfluidic devices, that it becomes possible to go beyond N&G, disentangling kinetics effects from thermodynamics in composition, structure and physical properties of the final system. Using amyloid fibril and cellulose nanocrystal filamentous colloids for which the binodal curve defining the two-phase region in the phase diagram is given by two separate vertical lines, we extrude a solution set at one thermodynamic branch inside the other branch, realizing nematic or cholesteric droplets where the composition is set by thermodynamics, while the structure and morphology are defined by dynamic flow parameters. We demonstrate that departing from the N&G paradigm unveils new physical phenomena, such as orders of magnitude shorter timescales, a wider phase diagram and internal cholesteric structures that are not observable via conventional LLPS. We also show that by co-dispersing plasmonic gold nanoparticles within colloidal liquid crystalline droplets, our approach enables on-demand fabrication of multicomponent heterogeneous liquid crystals, enhancing their potential, and introducing original fundamental and technological directions in multicomponent structured fluids.

Abstract:An interface description and numerical simulations of model A kinetics are used for the first time to investigate the intrasurface kinetics of phase ordering on corrugated surfaces. Geometrical dynamical equations are derived for the domain interfaces. The dynamics is shown to depend strongly on the local Gaussian curvature of the surface, and can be fundamentally different from that in flat systems: dynamical scaling breaks down despite the persistence of the dominant interfacial undulation mode; growth laws are slower than t1/2 and even logarithmic; a new very-late-stage regime appears characterized by extremely slow interface motion; finally, the zero-temperature fixed point no longer exists, leading to metastable states. Criteria for the existence of the latter are derived and discussed in the context of more complex systems.

Abstract:We introduce a kinetic model describing the phase separation in the mixture of long rod-like molecules and long chain-like molecules. The model uses the angular distribution function for the orientations of the rods as a dynamical variable. The energetics is based on the nonlocal Onsager theory for the rods combined with a nonlocal extension of the Flory–Huggins theory. The kinetics explicitly takes into account the preferential diffusion along the rods. We computed the phase diagrams in this model and found a number of transitions leading to phase separation. We also performed numerical simulations of the phase separation kinetics and studied the resulting morphologies.

Abstract:Most of polymer blends are thermodynamic immiscible because of small entropy of mixing, forming unique spatial-temporal pattern. In this review, based on our recent work, we focus on the phase separation kinetics and corresponding pattern evolution of polymer system by using time dependent Ginzberg-Landau (TDGL) equation. The review contents cover the phase separation dynamics under shear for polymer blends and block copolymers, phase separation coupling with chemical reactions, and phase separation on the spherical surface. Also microphase separation dynamics of complex triblock copolymers is reviewed by means of the coupling between the TDGL and self-consistent field theory (SCFT), namely dynamic SCFT, which consider both the dynamics and the topological characteristic of the chain.

Abstract:We use a continuum, two-fluid approach to study a mixture of two active nematic fluids. Even in the absence of thermodynamically driven ordering, for mixtures of different activities we observe turbulent microphase separation, where domains form and disintegrate chaotically in an active turbulent background. This is a weak effect if there is no elastic nematic alignment between the two fluid components, but is greatly enhanced in the presence of an elastic alignment or substrate friction. We interpret the results in terms of relative flows between the two species which result from active anchoring at concentration gradients. Abstract:Multicomponent systems are ubiquitous in nature and industry. While the physics of few-component liquid mixtures (i.e., binary and ternary ones) is well-understood and routinely taught in undergraduate courses, the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of $N$-component mixtures with $N>3$ have remained relatively unexplored. An example of such a mixture is provided by the intracellular fluid, in which protein-rich droplets phase separate into distinct membraneless organelles. In this work, we investigate equilibrium phase behavior and morphology of $N$-component liquid mixtures within the Flory-Huggins theory of regular solutions. In order to determine the number of coexisting phases and their compositions, we developed a new algorithm for constructing complete phase diagrams, based on numerical convexification of the discretized free energy landscape. Together with a Cahn-Hilliard approach for kinetics, we employ this method to study mixtures with $N=4$ and $5$ components. We report on both the coarsening behavior of such systems, as well as the resulting morphologies in three spatial dimensions. We discuss how the number of coexisting phases and their compositions can be extracted with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and K-Means clustering algorithms. Finally, we discuss how one can reverse engineer the interaction parameters and volume fractions of components in order to achieve a range of desired packing structures, such as nested `Russian dolls' and encapsulated Janus droplets.

Abstract:A dynamic Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is performed to investigate the phase behavior of mixtures of flexible polymers and low molecular weight thermotropic liquid crystals (LCs). The polymer is represented by three-dimensional self-avoiding lattice chains, while the LC is described by the Lebwohl-Lasher nematogen model. The initially homogeneous rod-coil mixture is, following a deep quench, separated into an isotropic phase rich in coils and a nematic phase rich in rods. The underlying spinodal decomposition (SD) process is then simulated and studied extensively. This is the first simulation of SD in a rod-coil mixture where the nematic ordering is included. Concentration fluctuations with a conserved order parameter are thus coupled with orientation fluctuations with a nonconserved order parameter. It is found that the early stage SD in the rod-coil mixture still exhibits the dominant spatial wavelength and that the scalar scattering functions in the late stage of SD obey the Furukawa scaling law. The kinetic difference between the so-called isotropic and anisotropic SD regions is, however, much less pronounced than predicted recently by the mean-field theory.

Abstract:Polymer blends or copolymers have multiscale complex structures that can be used as templates to prepare various complex materials. To regulate the mesoscale structures of these polymer blends or copolymers, there are three fundamental problems: What is the physical condition of the microphase separation needed to form materials with desired compositions and mesoscale structures in different domains? How do these compositions and mesoscale structures evolve during the preparation period? How does the morphology change in the interfacial region? Many experimental measurements, computer simulation methods, and theories have been developed. However, most of them are only suitable for individual tasks. In recent years, we have developed theoretical methods based on equations of state that can be used comprehensively to Study the multiscale structure of polymer systems, including the phase diagrams, the morphologies and evolution of microphase separation, the densities and composition profiles in different domains, and the molecular configurations in the interfacial region. The molecular parameters of the equation of state or the Helmholtz function model can be determined from the pressure, volume, temperature, and miscibility data of polymers, which ensures the practical applicability of the methods.
Modeling Complex Liquid Crystals Mixtures: From Polymer Dispersed Mesophase to Nematic Nanocolloids

Abstract:Liquid crystals are synthetic and biological viscoelastic anisotropic soft matter materials that combine liquid fluidity with crystal anisotropy and find use in optical devices, sensor/actuators, lubrication, super-fibers. Frequently mesogens are mixed with colloidal and nanoparticles, other mesogens, isotropic solvents, thermoplastic polymers, cross-linkable monomers, among others. This comprehensive review present recent progress on meso and macro scale thermodynamic modelling, highlighting the (i) novelties in spinodal and binodal lines in the various phase diagrams, (ii) the growth laws under phase transitions and phase separation, (iii) the ubiquitous role of metastability and its manifestation in complex droplet interfaces, (iv) the various spinodal decompositions due to composition and order fluctuations, (v) the formation of novel material architectures such as colloidal crystals, (vi) the particle rich phase behaviour in liquid crystal nanocomposites, (vii) the use of topological defects to absorb and organize nanoparticles, and (viii) the ability of faceted nanoparticles to link into strings and organize into lattices. Emphasis is given to highlight dominant mechanisms and driving forces, and to link them to specific terms in the free energies of these complex mixtures. The novelties of incorporating mesophases into blends, solutions, dispersions and mixtures is revealed by using theory, modelling, computation, and visualization.

Unraveling the Phase Behavior and Stability of Surfactant-Free Microemulsions: from Molecular Interactions to Macroscopic Properties.

Abstract:Surfactant-free microemulsions (SFMEs), formed in mixed ternary systems such as water/ethanol/oil, have garnered substantial interest due to their unique properties and broad applications in areas such as enzyme-catalyzed reactions and nanoparticle synthesis. In this work, we conducted an in-depth investigation of the spontaneous nucleation and stabilization mechanisms of SFMEs, employing experimental techniques, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and Flory-Huggins (F-H) theory. The formation of multiscale nanostructures (characteristic scales of ∼1 and ∼100 nm) and their interfacial charging characteristics in SFMEs have been revealed experimentally. MD simulations investigated the structure and stability on the microscopic scale, enhancing our understanding of molecular interactions within these microemulsions. Our theoretical analysis revealed that the stability of mesoscopic nanodroplets within SFMEs hinges on a delicate balance between mixing entropy and internal energy. Equilibrium between these energies results in stable nanodroplet solutions, showcasing a delicate balance that can be manipulated by adjusting the volume fractions of the components and their interaction parameters. This research not only advances the theoretical understanding of SFMEs but also highlights their potential in industrial applications, emphasizing the importance of integrating theoretical and experimental approaches to develop functional nanostructured materials.
Ordering Kinetics of Canted and Uniform States in Nematic Liquid Crystals

Abstract:We undertake a comprehensive Monte Carlo (MC) study of the ordering kinetics in nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) in 3-dimensions $(d=3)$ by performing deep quenches from the isotropic $(T>T_c)$ to the nematic $(T<T_c)$ phase. The inter-molecular potential between the nematogens, represented by continuous $O(3)$ spins with inversion symmetry, is accurately mimicked by the {\it generalised Lebwohl Lasher} (GLL) model. It incorporates second and fourth order Legendre interactions, and their relative interaction strength is $\lambda$. For $\lambda <-0.3$, we observe {\it canted} morphologies with a $\lambda$-dependent angle-of-tilt between the neighbouring rod-like molecules. For $\lambda \geq-0.3$, the molecules align to yield {\it uniform} states. The coarsening morphologies obey {\it generalized dynamical scaling} in the two regimes, but the scaling function is not robust with respect to $\lambda$. The structure factor tail in the canted regime follows the {\it Porod law}: $S(k,t)\sim k^{-4}$, implying that the coarsening dynamics is due to the annihilation of interfacial defects. This is unexpected, as the GLL model is characterised by a continuous order parameter. The uniform regime on the other hand, exhibits the expected {\it generalized Porod decay}: $S(k,t)\sim k^{-5}$, characteristic of scattering from {\it string defects}. Finally, the domain growth obeys the {\it Lifshitz-Allen-Cahn law}: $L(t)\sim t^{1/2}$ for all values of $\lambda$. Our results for the novel {\it canted} regime are relevant for a large class of systems with orientational ordering, e.g. active matter, membranes, LC elastomers, etc. We hope that our work triggers-off stimulating investigations in them.

Abstract:Microscopic dynamics of complex fluids in the early stage of spinodal decomposition (SD) is strongly intertwined with the kinetics of structural evolution, which makes a quantitative characterization challenging. In this work, we use x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy to study the dynamics and kinetics of a protein solution undergoing liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS). We demonstrate that in the early stage of SD, the structural relaxation kinetics is up to 40 times slower than the dynamics and thus can be decoupled. The kinetic decay rate is inversely proportional to time in the early stage, followed by a nearly constant behavior during the coarsening stage. The microscopic dynamics can be well described by hyper-diffusive ballistic motions with a relaxation time exponentially growing with time in the early stage followed by a power-law increase with fluctuations. These experimental results are further supported by simulations based on the Cahn-Hilliard equation. The established framework is applicable to other condensed matter and biological systems undergoing phase transitions and may also inspire further theoretical work.

Phase separation kinetics of segregating fluid mixtures in the presence of quenched disorder

Abstract:Quenched or frozen-in structural disorder is ubiquitous in real experimental systems. Much of the progress is achieved in understanding the phase separation of such systems using the diffusion-driven coarsening in Ising model with quenched disorder. But there is a paucity of research in the phase separation kinetics in fluids with quenched disorder. In this paper, we present results from a detailed Molecular dynamics simulation, the effects of randomly placed localized impurities on the phase separating kinetics of binary fluid mixture. Two different models are offered for representing the impurities. We observe a dramatic slowing down in the pattern formation with increasing impurity concentration. This sluggish domain growth kinetics follows power-law with a disorder-dependent exponent. The correlation function and structure factor show a non-Porod behavior, indicating the roughening of domain interfaces. We have also studied the effect of quenched disorder on the aging dynamics by calculating the two-time order parameter auto correlation function and find that the Fisher and Huse scaling law holds good in presence of quenched disorder.

Phase separation of a magnetic fluid: Asymptotic states and non-equilibrium kinetics

Abstract:We study self-assembly in a colloidal suspension of magnetic particles by performing comprehensive molecular dynamics simulations of the Stockmayer (SM) model which comprises spherical particles decorated by a magnetic moment. The SM potential incorporates dipole-dipole interactions along with the usual Lennard-Jones interaction and exhibits a gas-liquid phase coexistence observed experimentally in magnetic fluids. When this system is quenched from the high-temperature homogeneous phase to the coexistence region, the non-equilibrium evolution to the condensed phase proceeds with the development of spatial as well as magnetic order. We observe density-dependent coarsening mechanisms - a diffusive growth law $\ell(t)\sim t^{1/3}$ in the nucleation regime, and hydrodynamics-driven inertial growth law $\ell(t)\sim t^{2/3}$ in the spinodal regimes. [$\ell(t)$ is the average size of the condensate at time $t$ after the quench.] While the spatial growth is governed by the expected conserved order parameter dynamics, the growth of magnetic order in the spinodal regime exhibits unexpected non-conserved dynamics. The asymptotic morphologies have density-dependent shapes which typically include the isotropic sphere and spherical bubble morphologies in the nucleation region, and the anisotropic cylinder, planar slab, cylindrical bubble morphologies in the spinodal region. The structures are robust and nonvolatile and exhibit characteristic magnetic properties. For example, the oppositely magnetized hemispheres in the spherical morphology impart the characteristics of a {\it Janus particle} to it. The observed structures have versatile applications in catalysis, drug delivery systems, memory devices, and magnetic photonic crystals, to name a few.

Abstract:Over the past decades, microemulsions have become increasingly attractive for application in diverse areas of science and engineering mainly because of their high thermodynamic stability and spontaneous formation. Microemulsion systems exhibit unusually complex phase behavior that makes the prediction of their performance and properties very difficult, if not impossible. Despite the development of advanced characterization techniques, the high cost and time requirements have severely restricted their large-scale practical applications, particularly that various combinations of experimental techniques most often have to be used to synthesize and characterize microemulsions as each of them measures a different aspect of a microemulsion system. This fact emphasizes the irreplaceable role of predictive phase behavior models for saving time, energy as well as money. The inevitable need for such models is the encouraging factor to perform a systematic critical review of the available computational methods concerning microemulsions in this study with the main goal of guiding researchers through the maze of identifying research gaps, industrial challenges, and future directions. First, the available modeling approaches are categorized into six main classes. Then, studies in each category are compared in different aspects including the underlying physics, assumptions, simplicity, accuracy, applicability, and generality. Next, the advantages, limitations, and drawbacks of each of the current techniques are described to provide an outlook of constraints and opportunities for future development. Eventually, the present review critically examines the capabilities of the existing models to address challenging problems concerning microemulsions. Also, a future roadmap is proposed to help academic researchers and industrial practitioners develop an integrated modeling approach for a more realistic description of microemulsion systems.
