Abstract:We generalize the mean field magnetic dynamo to include local evolution of the mean vorticity in addition to the mean magnetic field. The coupled equations exhibit a general mean field dynamo instability that enables the transfer of turbulent energy to the magnetic field and vorticity on larger scales. The growth of the vorticity and magnetic field both require helical turbulence which can be supplied by an underlying global rotation. The dynamo coefficients are derived including the backreaction from the mean magnetic field to lowest order. We find that a mean vorticity field can actually seed exponential growth of mean magnetic field from only a small scale seed magnetic field, without the need for a seed mean magnetic field. The equations decouple when the fluctuating velocity and magnetic field cross-correlations vanish, resulting in the separate mean field magnetic and mean field vorticity dynamo equations.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: how to describe the mean - field dynamo effect in magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) through the coupled equations containing the mean vorticity and the mean magnetic field. Specifically, the authors have generalized the traditional mean - field magnetic dynamo theory. They not only considered the evolution of the mean magnetic field but also added the evolution of the mean vorticity, and proposed a more general coupled mean - field dynamo (CMFD) model. This model can explain how turbulent energy is transferred to the magnetic field and vorticity on larger scales, especially when there is helical turbulence, and this transfer is more significant. Helical turbulence can be provided by the underlying global rotation. ### Main contributions 1. **Introduction of mean vorticity**: In addition to the traditional mean magnetic field, this research introduced the concept of mean vorticity into the mean - field dynamo theory for the first time, thus constructing a new framework to understand the generation and evolution of large - scale magnetic fields and vorticity. 2. **Coupled equations**: Derived a set of coupled equations containing the mean vorticity and the mean magnetic field, which show how the energy is transferred from the turbulent scale to the large scale through helical turbulence. 3. **Seed effect**: It was found that even if the initial mean magnetic field is zero, as long as there are small - scale magnetic fields and mean vorticity, a large - scale mean magnetic field can be generated through the coupling effect. 4. **Non - linear effect**: Considered the reaction of the mean magnetic field on the velocity flow and corrected the dynamo coefficients of momentum and vorticity, although these corrections are limited to the lowest order. ### Mathematical model A series of equations were derived in the paper to describe the evolution of the mean field. The key equations include: - Mean vorticity equation: \[ \frac{d\bar{\omega}}{dt}=\alpha_0(\nabla\times\bar{\omega})+\alpha_1(\nabla\times\bar{b})+\beta_0\nabla^2\bar{\omega}+\beta_1\nabla^2\bar{b}-\alpha_2\nabla^2(\nabla\times\bar{b})+\bar{\omega}_c\cdot\nabla\bar{v}+\bar{\omega}\cdot\nabla\bar{v}_c+\bar{\omega}_c\cdot\nabla\bar{v}_c \] - Mean magnetic field equation: \[ \frac{d\bar{b}}{dt}=\alpha_2(\nabla\times\bar{\omega})+\alpha_3(\nabla\times\bar{b})+\beta_2\nabla^2\bar{b}+\bar{b}\cdot\nabla\bar{v}_c \] where \(\alpha_i\) and \(\beta_i\) are dynamo coefficients, representing helicity and diffusion effects respectively. ### Conclusion This research extended the traditional mean - field magnetic dynamo theory by introducing mean vorticity and proposed a new coupled model, which can better explain the generation mechanism of large - scale magnetic fields and vorticity. Especially in astrophysics, such as in accretion disks and galactic jets, this model may have important application values.
