Abstract:We report the initial results from a program to study the morphology, physical state, and kinematics of the ''diffuse ionized medium'' (DIM) in a sample of the nearest and brightest late-type galaxies. For each of five galaxies (NGC 2403, M81, NGC 4395, M51, and M101), we have analyzed deep narrowband H alpha images of the entire star-forming disk and long-slit spectra of the inner (similar to 10 kpc) disk with a resolution of 40-75 km s(-1). We find that the DIM covers most of the star-forming disk and is morphologically related to the presence of high surface brightness gas (the giant H II regions). The DIM and the giant H II regions differ systematically in their physical and dynamical state. The DIM is characterized by enhanced emission in the low-ionization forbidden lines ([O I], [N II], and [S II]), and even the high-ionization [O III] lambda 5007 line is moderately strong in the DIM in at least three cases. This last result contrasts with upper limits on the [O III] surface brightness in the local DIM of our own Galaxy (the ''Reynolds Layer''). We directly verify the inference made by Lehnert and Heckman that the DIM contributes significantly to the spatially integrated (global) emission-line ratios measured in late-type galaxies. We also find that the DIM is more disturbed kinematically than the gas in the giant H II regions. The deconvolved (intrinsic) widths of the H alpha and [N II] lambda 6584 lines range from 30 to 100 km s(-1) (FWHM) in the DIM compared to 20-50 km s(-1) in the giant H II regions. The high-ionization gas in the DIM is more kinematically disturbed than the low-ionization gas: the [O III] lambda 5007 lines have intrinsic widths of 70-150 km s(-1). The differing kinematics implies that the DIM is not a single monolithic phase of the ISM. Instead, it may consist of a ''quiescent'' DIM with a low ionization state and small scale height (few hundred parsec) and a ''disturbed'' DIM with a high ionization state and moderate scale height (0.5-1 kpc). We argue that the quiescent DIM is most likely photoionized by radiation from O stars leaking out of giant H II regions (although this requires fine-tuning the opacity of galactic disks to ionizing radiation). The disturbed DIM is most likely heated by the mechanical energy supplied by supernovae and stellar winds. Since the disturbed DIM accounts for only a minority (<20%) of the H alpha emission in the regions we have studied, there is no fundamental energetics problem with this model, but it does require mechanically heated gas to have a high areal covering factor in the inner disk (which needs to be confirmed observationally). We find no clear discontinuity between the physical and dynamical properties of the giant H II regions and the quiescent DIM. The quiescent DIM is morphologically related to the giant H II regions and there is a smooth dependence of the emission-line ratios and emission-line widths on the surface brightness of the emission. Thus, we suggest that a unified approach to the study of the DIM and giant H II regions in star-forming galaxies will prove fruitful.

Abstract:The "diffuse ionized medium" (DIM) makes up a significant fraction of the mass and ionization requirements of the interstellar medium of the Milky Way and is now known to be an energetically significant component in most normal star-forming galaxies. Observations of the ionized gas in starburst galaxies have revealed the presence of gas with striking similarities to the DIM in normal galaxies: relatively low surface brightness and strong emission from low-ionization forbidden lines like [S II] λλ6716, 6731. In this paper we analyze Hα images and long-slit spectra of samples of normal and starburst galaxies to better understand the nature of this diffuse, low surface brightness gas. We find that in both samples there is a strong inverse correlation between the Hα surface brightness (ΣHα) and the [S II]/Hα line ratio at a given location in the galaxy. However, the correlation for the starbursts is offset brightward by an order of magnitude in Hα surface brightness at a given line ratio. In contrast, we find that all the galaxies (starburst and normal alike) define a universal relation between line ratio and the relative Hα surface brightness (ΣHα/Σe, where Σe is the mean Hα surface brightness within the galaxy half-light radius). We show that such a universal correlation is a natural outcome of a model in which the DIM is photoionized gas that has a characteristic thermal pressure (P) that is proportional to the mean rate of star formation per unit area in the galaxy (ΣSFR). Good quantitative agreement with the data follows if we require the constant of proportionality to be consistent with the values of P and ΣSFR in the local disk of the Milky Way. Such a scaling between P and ΣSFR may arise either because feedback from massive stars heats the ISM or because ΣSFR is determined (or limited) by the mean gas pressure.
On the Structure and Morphology of the "diffuse Ionized Medium" in Star-Forming Galaxies

Abstract:Deep Hα images of a sample of nearby late-type spiral galaxies have been analyzed to characterize the morphology and energetic significance of the "diffuse ionized medium" (DIM). We find that the DIM properties can be reasonably unified as a function of relative surface brightness (Σ/, where is the mean Hα surface brightness within regions lying above a fixed, very faint isophotal level). We measured the images down to this common isophotal limit and constructed a fundamental dimensionless surface brightness distribution function that describes the dependence of the area (normalized to total area) occupied by gas with a given relative surface brightness (Σ/). This function determines both the flux and area contribution by the DIM to global values. The function is found to be almost the same at high surface brightness (Σ/≳1) and less similar for Σ/≲1. We show the universal distribution function at high surface brightness can be understood as a consequence of the general properties of H II regions, including their Hα luminosity function and exponential radial brightness profiles. We suggest that relative surface brightness (rather than an absolute value) is a more physically meaningful criterion to discriminate the DIM from H II regions. The use of the dimensionless distribution function to quantify the DIM is consistent with the fundamentally morphological definition of the DIM as being "diffuse." The difference in the distribution function from galaxy to galaxy at low surface brightness quantifies the different prominence of the DIM in the galaxies. This variation is found to be consistent with results from other complementary ways of determining the DIM's global importance. The variation of the DIM among the galaxies that is indicated by the distribution function is small enough to guarantee that the fractional contribution of the DIM to the global Hα luminosity in the galaxies is fairly constant, as has been observed. The continuous transition from H II regions to the DIM in the distribution function suggests that the ionizing energy for the DIM mainly comes from H II regions, consistent with the "leaky H II regions model."

Abstract:Most of a galaxy's mass is located out to hundreds of kiloparsecs beyond its stellar component. This diffuse reservoir of gas, the circumgalactic medium (CGM), acts as the interface between a galaxy and the cosmic web that connects galaxies. We present kiloparsec-scale resolution integral field spectroscopy of emission lines that trace cool ionized gas from the center of a nearby galaxy to 30 kpc into its CGM. We find a smooth surface brightness profile with a break in slope at twice the 90% stellar radius. The gas also transitions from being photoionized by HII star-forming regions in the disk to being ionized by shocks or the extragalactic UV background at larger distances. These changes represent the boundary between the interstellar medium (ISM) and the CGM, revealing how the dominant reservoir of baryonic matter directly connects to its galaxy.

Abstract:We revisit the question of the ionization of the diffuse medium in late type galaxies, by studying NGC 891, the prototype of edge-on spiral galaxies. The most important challenge for the models considered so far was the observed increase of [OIII]/Hbeta, [OII]/Hbeta, and [NII]/Halpha with increasing distance to the galactic plane. We propose a scenario based on the expected population of massive OB stars and hot low-mass evolved stars (HOLMES) in this galaxy to explain this observational fact. In the framework of this scenario we construct a finely meshed grid of photoionization models. For each value of the galactic latitude z we look for the models which simultaneously fit the observed values of the [OIII]/Hbeta, [OII]/Hbeta, and [NII]/Halpha ratios. For each value of z we find a range of solutions which depends on the value of the oxygen abundance. The models which fit the observations indicate a systematic decrease of the electron density with increasing z. They become dominated by the HOLMES with increasing z only when restricting to solar oxygen abundance models, which argues that the metallicity above the galactic plane should be close to solar. They also indicate that N/O increases with increasing z.

3D Integral Field Observations of Ten Galactic Winds - I. Extended phase (>10 Myr) of mass/energy injection before the wind blows

Abstract:We present 3D spectroscopic observations of a sample of 10 nearby galaxies with the AAOmega-SPIRAL integral field spectrograph on the 3.9m AAT, the largest survey of its kind to date. The double-beam spectrograph provides spatial maps in a range of spectral diagnostics: [OIII] 5007, H-beta, Mg-b, NaD, [OI] 6300, H-alpha, [NII] 6583, [SII] 6717, 6731. All of the objects in our survey show extensive wind-driven filamentation along the minor axis, in addition to large-scale disk rotation. Our sample can be divided into either starburst galaxies or active galactic nuclei (AGN), although some objects appear to be a combination of these. The total ionizing photon budget available to both classes of galaxies is sufficient to ionise all of the wind-blown filamentation out to large radius. We find however that while AGN photoionisation always dominates in the wind filaments, this is not the case in starburst galaxies where shock ionisation dominates. This clearly indicates that after the onset of star formation, there is a substantial delay (> 10 Myr) before a starburst wind develops. We show why this behavior is expected by deriving ``ionisation'' and dynamical timescales for both AGNs and starbursts. We establish a sequence of events that lead to the onset of a galactic wind. The clear signature provided by the ionisation timescale is arguably the strongest evidence yet that the starburst phenomenon is an impulsive event. A well-defined ionisation timescale is not expected in galaxies with a protracted history of circumnuclear star formation. Our 3D data provide important templates for comparisons with high redshift galaxies.[Abridged]

The Relationship Between the Dense Neutral and Diffuse Ionized Gas in the Thick Disks of Two Edge-On Spiral Galaxies

Abstract:We present high-resolution, optical images (BVI + Halpha) of the multiphase interstellar medium (ISM) in the thick disks of the edge-on spiral galaxies NGC 4013 and NGC 4302. Our images from the Hubble Space Telescope, Large Binocular Telescope, and WIYN 3.5-m reveal an extensive population of filamentary dust absorption seen to z ~ 2-2.5 kpc. Many of these dusty thick disk structures have characteristics reminiscent of molecular clouds found in the Milky Way disk. Our Halpha images show the extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (DIG) in these galaxies is dominated by a smooth, diffuse component. The strongly-filamentary morphologies of the dust absorption have no counterpart in the smoothly distributed Halpha emission. We argue the thick disk DIG and dust-bearing filaments trace physically distinct phases of the thick disk ISM, the latter tracing a dense, warm or cold neutral medium. The dense, dusty matter in the thick disks of spiral galaxies is largely tracing matter ejected from the thin disk via energetic feedback from massive stars. The high densities of the gas may be a result of converging gas flows. This dense material fuels some thick disk star formation, as evidenced by the presence of thick disk H II regions.

Intergalactic-Absorption Confounding Circumgalactic Observations

Abstract:The origin of warm ions in the circum-galactic medium (CGM) surrounding massive galaxies remains a mystery. In this paper, we argue that a significant fraction of the observed warm-ion columns may arise in the intergalactic medium (IGM) surrounding galactic halos. We use a simple spherical collapse model of the dark matter (DM) halos and their baryonic content to compute the evolving ion fractions within and outside virial halos. We show that the photoionized IGM may produce a thick blanket of warm ions around the CGM, thereby contaminating CGM observations. We find that the IGM contributes $> 75\%$ of the total \ion{O}{6} column densities in halos with virial masses exceeding a few times $10^{11}~M_\odot$, and that it may dominate the \ion{O}{6} absorption even for lower mass-halos, depending on the impact parameter. We compare our results with observations and find that our simplified model reproduces the overall \ion{O}{6} columns as well as their trend with the impact parameter and halo mass. We show that observed warm ion columns may be completely dominated by the IGM envelopes, consistent with CGM$^2$ data. We, therefore, suggest that theoretical interpretations of CGM-survey observations must consider the possible contribution of the surrounding IGM. Although our simplified model suggests that it may be possible to kinematically distinguish between CGM and IGM origins through the absorption line profiles, this distinction is likely unfeasible in realistic astrophysical halos, due to the complex velocity structure in the multi-phased CGM.

A Multiwavelength Optical Emission Line Survey of Warm Ionized Gas in the Galaxy

Abstract:We report on observations of several optical emission lines toward a variety of newly revealed faint, large-scale Halpha-emitting regions in the Galaxy. The lines include [NII] 6583, [NII] 5755, [SII] 6716, [OIII] 5007, and HeI 5876 obtained with the Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper (WHAM) toward sightlines that probe superbubbles, high latitude filamentary features, and the more diffuse warm ionized medium (WIM). Our observations include maps covering thousands of square degrees toward the well-known Orion-Eridanus bubble, a recently discovered 60deg x 20deg bipolar superbubble centered in Perseus, plus several classical HII regions surrounding OB stars and hot evolved stellar cores. We use the emission line data to explore the temperature and ionization conditions within the emitting gas and their variations between the different emission regions. We find that in the diffuse WIM and in the faint high latitude filamentary structures the line ratios of [NII]/Ha and [SII]/Ha are generally high, while [OIII]/Ha and HeI/Ha are generally low compared to the bright classical HII regions. This suggests that the gas producing this faint wide-spread emission is warmer, in a lower ionization state, and ionized by a softer spectrum than gas in classical HII regions surrounding O stars, the presumed ionization source for the WIM. In addition, we find differences in physical conditions between the large bubble structures and the more diffuse WIM, suggesting that the ionization of superbubble walls by radiation from interior O associations does not account entirely for the range of conditions found within the WIM, particularly the highest values of [NII]/Ha and [SII]/Ha.

Mid-infrared fine structure lines from the Galactic Warm Ionized Medium

Abstract:Galaxy and occupies perhaps a quarter of the volume of the Galactic disk. Decoding the spectrum of the Galactic diffuse ionizing field is of fundamental interest. This can be done via direct measurements of ionization fractions of various elements. Based on current physical models for the WIM we predicted that mid-IR fine structure lines of Ne, Ar and S would be within the grasp of the Mid-Infrared Imager-Medium Resolution Spectrometer (MIRI-MRS), an Integral Field Unit (IFU) spectrograph, aboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Motivated thus we analyzed a pair of commissioning data sets and detected [NeII] 12.81 $\mu$m, [SIII] 18.71 $\mu$m and possibly [SIV] 10.51 $\mu$m. The inferred emission measure for these detections is about 10 ${\rm cm^{-6} pc}$, typical of the WIM. These detections are broadly consistent with expectations of physical models for the WIM. The current detections are limited by uncorrected fringing (and to a lesser extent by baseline variations). In due course, we expect, as with other IFUs, the calibration pipeline to deliver photon-noise-limited spectra. The detections reported here bode well for the study of the WIM. Along most lines-of-sight hour-long MIRI-MRS observations should detect line emission from the WIM. When combined with optical observations by modern IFUs with high spectral resolution on large ground-based telescopes, the ionization fraction and temperature of neon and sulfur can be robustly inferred. Separately, the ionization of helium in the WIM can be probed by NIRspec. Finally, joint JWST and optical IFU studies will open up a new cottage industry of studying the WIM on arcsecond scales.

Abstract:In this paper we make a quantitative study of the hypothesis that the diffuse H-alpha emitted from the discs of spiral galaxies owes its origin to the ionizing photons escaping from HII regions. We use the H-alpha measurements of the complete set of HII regions in the spiral NGC 157, for which an HI density map was available, to derive a family of models which predict the ionizing photon distribution in the disc of this galaxy. The predicted diffuse H-alpha surface brightness distributions from our models were compared with the observed distributions showing that, in general terms, the hypothesis of density bounding for the HII regions allows us to predict well the spatial distribution of the diffuse ionized gas. In the model yielding the best fit to the data, the regions of lower luminosity lose a constant fraction of their ionizing flux to their surroundings, while for HII region luminosities above a specific transition value the ionizing escape fraction is a rising function of the Ha luminosity.

Abstract:The cooling transition temperature gas in the interstellar medium (ISM), traced by the high ions, Si iv, C iv, N v, and O vi, helps to constrain the flow of energy from the hot ISM with T>106 K to the warm ISM with T < 2 × 104 K. We investigate the properties of this gas along the lines of sight to 38 stars in the Milky Way disk using 1.5–2.7 km s−1 resolution spectra of Si iv, C iv, and N v absorption from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, and 15 km s−1 resolution spectra of O vi absorption from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. The absorption by Si iv and C iv exhibits broad and narrow components while only broad components are seen in N v and O vi. The narrow components imply gas with T < 7 × 104 K and trace two distinct types of gas. The strong, saturated, and narrow Si iv and C iv components trace the gas associated with the vicinities of O-type stars and their supershells. The weaker narrow Si iv and C iv components trace gas in the general ISM that is photoionized by the EUV radiation from cooling hot gas or has radiatively cooled in a non-equilibrium manner from the transition temperature phase, but rarely the warm-ionized medium probed by Al iii. The broad Si iv, C iv, N v, and O vi components trace collisionally ionized gas that is very likely undergoing a cooling transition from the hot ISM to the warm ISM. The cooling process possibly provides the regulation mechanism that produces 〈N(C iv)/N(Si iv)〉 = 3.9 ± 1.9. The cooling process also produces absorption lines where the median and mean values of the line widths increase with the energy required to create the ion.

Abstract:The intergalactic medium (IGM) contains >50% of the baryonic mass of the Universe, yet the mechanisms responsible for keeping the IGM ionized have not been fully explained. Hence, we investigate ion abundances from the largest blind QSO absorption catalog for clouds that show C iv, N v, and O vi simultaneously. The wavelength range of present UV spectrographs, however, makes it possible to probe C iv and O vi only over a small range of redshift (z ≈ 0.12–0.15). As a result, we only have five IGM absorbing clouds, yet these provide a powerful and representative tool to probe the IGM ionization state. We found one cloud to be in collisional ionization equilibrium while three of the five showed signs of being produced by nonequilibrium processes, specifically conductive interfaces and turbulent mixing layers. None of the models we explore here were able to reproduce the ionization state of the remaining system. Energetic processes, such as galactic feedback from star formation and active galactic nucleus winds, would be excellent candidates that can cause such widespread ionization.

An Investigation of Diffuse Interstellar Gas toward a Large, Low Extinction Window into the Inner Galaxy

Abstract:Halpha and Hbeta spectroscopy with the Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper (WHAM) reveals a strong concentration of high velocity emission in a ~ 5 by 5 deg area centered near (l.b) = (27,-3), known as the Scutum Cloud. The high velocities imply that we are detecting optical emission from near the plane of the Galaxy out to the tangent point at heliocentric distances of D \gtrsim 6 kpc, assuming the gas participates in circular Galactic rotation. The ratio of the Halpha to Hbeta emission as a function of velocity suggests that dust along these lines of sight produces a total visual extinction of A_v ~ 3 at D ~ 6 kpc. This makes it possible to use optical emission lines to explore the physical conditions of ionized gas in the inner Galaxy. At a Galactocentric distance R_G ~ 4 kpc, for example, we find that the H^+ has an rms midplane density of ~ 1 cm^-3 with a vertical scale height of ~ 300 pc. We also find evidence for an increase in the flux of Lyman continuum photons and an increase in the ratio of ionized to neutral hydrogen toward the inner Galaxy. We have extended the measurements of E(B-V) in this direction to distances far beyond what has been accessible through stellar photometry and find E(B-V)/N_H to be near the local mean of 1.7 x 10^-22 cm^2 mag, with evidence for an increase in this ratio at R_G ~ 4 kpc. Finally, our observations of [NII] 6583, [SII] 6716, and [OIII] 5007 toward the window reveal that in the inner Galaxy the temperature of the gas and the ionization state of oxygen increase with increasing height from the midplane.

Abstract:We assess the possibility to detect the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) in emission and to characterize its physical conditions and spatial distribution through spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy, in the framework of the recently proposed DIOS, EDGE, Xenia, and ORIGIN missions, all of which are equipped with microcalorimeter-based detectors. For this purpose we analyze a large set of mock emission spectra, extracted from a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. These mock X-ray spectra are searched for emission features showing both the OVII K alpha triplet and OVIII Ly alpha line, which constitute a typical signature of the warm hot gas. Our analysis shows that 1 Ms long exposures and energy resolution of 2.5 eV will allow us to detect about 400 such features per deg^2 with a significance >5 sigma and reveals that these emission systems are typically associated with density ~100 above the mean. The temperature can be estimated from the line ratio with a precision of ~20%. The combined effect of contamination from other lines, variation in the level of the continuum, and degradation of the energy resolution reduces these estimates. Yet, with an energy resolution of 7 eV and all these effects taken into account, one still expects about 160 detections per deg^2. These line systems are sufficient to trace the spatial distribution of the line-emitting gas, which constitute an additional information, independent from line statistics, to constrain the poorly known cosmic chemical enrichment history and the stellar feedback processes.

Abstract:Using data taken as part of the Bluedisk project, we study the connection between neutral hydrogen (H I) in the environment of spiral galaxies and that in the galaxies themselves. We measure the total HI mass present in the environment in a statistical way by studying the distribution of noise peaks in the HI data cubes obtained for 40 galaxies observed with Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. We find that galaxies whose HI mass fraction is high relative to standard scaling relations have an excess HI mass in the surrounding environment as well. Gas in the environment consists of gas clumps which are individually below the detection limit of our HI data. These clumps may be hosted by small satellite galaxies and/or be the high-density peaks of a more diffuse gas distribution in the intergalactic medium. We interpret this result as an indication for a picture in which the HI-rich central galaxies accrete gas from an extended gas reservoir present in their environment.
