Abstract:This article outlines the complexity of reading with understanding, what is required for full and deep comprehension, the state of affairs with regard to reading comprehension in developed countries, possible etiologies for low performances, and suggestions for instruction in specific skills and strategies to improve students’ demonstrated achievement in daily lessons as well as on global assessments. Recognizing the commonality of this concern among nations, a need to examine universally accepted tenets for successful reading comprehension as well as local etiologies that impede it becomes increasingly important. Such tenets are skills and strategies that address all of Irwin’s micro and macro aspects of reading for understanding as well as Bloom’s revised taxonomy for higher-level thinking.

Policy Insights from the Behavioral and Brain Sciences

Abstract:Reading comprehension is one of the most complex cognitive activities in which humans engage, making it difficult to teach, measure, and research. Despite decades of research in reading comprehension, international and national reading scores indicate stagnant growth for U.S. adolescents. In this article, we review the theoretical and empirical research in reading comprehension. We first explore different theoretical models for comprehension and then focus on components shown to be important across models that represent potential targets for instruction. In the last part of the article, we consider solutions for translating research to practice and policies for improving instruction. Improving reading scores will require a concerted and collaborative effort by researchers, educators, and policy makers with a focus on long-term solutions. An early and sustained focus on developing background knowledge, vocabulary, inference, and comprehension monitoring skills across development will be necessary to improve comprehension.

Abstract:Reading comprehension is widely agreed to be not one, but many things. At the least, it is agreed to entail cognitive processes that operate on many different kinds of knowledge to achieve many different kinds of reading tasks. Emerging from the apparent complexity, however, is a central idea: Comprehension occurs as the reader builds one or more mental representations of a text message (e.g., Kintsch & Rawson, 2005). Among these representations, an accurate model of the situation described by the text (Van Dijk & Kintsch, 1983) is the product of successful deep comprehension.

Abstract:For accurate reading comprehension, readers must first learn to map letters to their corresponding speech sounds and meaning and then they must string the meanings of many words together to form a representation of the text. Furthermore, readers must master the complexities involved in parsing the relevant syntactic and pragmatic information necessary for accurate interpretation. Failure in this process can occur at multiple levels and cognitive neuroscience has been helpful in identifying the underlying causes of success and failure in reading single words and in reading comprehension. In general, neurobiological studies of skilled reading comprehension indicate a highly overlapping language circuit for single word reading, reading comprehension and listening comprehension with largely quantitative differences in a number of reading and language related areas. This paper reviews relevant research from studies employing neuroimaging techniques to study reading with a focus on the relationship between reading skill, single word reading, and text comprehension.

Abstract:During reading, we draw on our background knowledge to help us comprehend the text. But background knowledge also comes into play during reading in a different way: reading creates knowledge. Kintsch deemed the distinction between regular comprehension and learning very important and argued that learning from text crucially depends on deep comprehension that goes beyond a basic situation model – by definition involving effortful and often intentional processes. In this commentary, we unpack the comprehension-learning connection. We do so by drawing on our independent and collaborative work on discourse theory building that has been influenced greatly by this idea. In particular, we discuss the circumstances under which readers exert the additional effort, in the context of the notion of standards of coherence, and the way in which the ensuing processes lead to the embedding of text information into background knowledge, in the context of the Landscape and KreC models. Along the way, we suggest important venues for future research.

Abstract:Learning to read--amazing as it is to small children and their parents--is one thing. Reading to learn, explains Susan Goldman of the University of Illinois at Chicago, is quite another. Are today's students able to use reading and writing to acquire knowledge, solve problems, and make decisions in academic, personal, and professional arenas? Do they have the literacy skills necessary to meet the demands of the twenty-first century? To answer these questions, Goldman describes the increasingly complex comprehension, reasoning skills, and knowledge that students need as they progress through school and surveys what researchers and educators know about how to teach those skills. Successfully reading to learn requires the ability to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information from multiple sources, Goldman writes. Effective readers must be able to apply different knowledge, reading, and reasoning processes to different types of content, from fiction to history and science, to news accounts and user manuals. They must assess sources of information for relevance, reliability, impartiality, and completeness. And they must connect information across multiple sources. In short, successful readers must not only use general reading skills but also pay close attention to discipline-specific processes. Goldman reviews the evidence on three different instructional approaches to reading to learn: general comprehension strategies, classroom discussion, and disciplinary content instruction. She argues that building the literacy skills necessary for U.S. students to read comprehensively and critically and to learn content in a variety of disciplines should be a primary responsibility for all of the nation's teachers. But outside of English, few subject-area teachers are aware of the need to teach subject-area reading comprehension skills, nor have they had opportunities to learn them themselves. Building the capacity of all teachers to meet the literacy needs of today's students requires long-term investment and commitment from the education community as well as society as a whole.

Abstract:Reading comprehension is a complex task which depends on a range of cognitive and linguistic processes. According to the Simple View of Reading, this complexity can be captured as the product of two sets of skills: decoding and linguistic comprehension. The Simple View explains variance in reading comprehension and provides a good framework to guide the classification of reading disorders. This paper discusses how weaknesses in either or both of components of the Simple View are implicated in children's reading comprehension difficulties. It concludes with reflections on the strengths and limitations of the Simple View as a theoretical and practical framework to guide our understanding of reading comprehension and its development.

Abstract:We reintroduce a wide-angle view of reading comprehension, the Reading Systems Framework, which places word knowledge in the center of the picture, taking into account the progress made in comprehension research and theory. Within this framework, word-to-text integration processes can serve as a model for the study of local comprehension processes, that is, those that make sense out of short stretches of text. These processes require linkage between the word identification system and the comprehension system, with the lexicon in the linking role. Studies of these processes examine the influence of one sentence on the reading of a single word in a second sentence, which enables the integration of the word meaning into the reader's mental model of the text. Skilled comprehenders, more than less skilled, show immediate use of word meanings in the integration process. Other evidence is also consistent with the assumption that word meaning processes are causal components in comprehension skill.

Abstract:The American Federation of Teachers (1999) has stated that "the most fundamental responsibility of schools is teaching students to read" (p. 7). The central purpose of reading is comprehension--constructing meaning from text. The purpose of the present study was to identify, review, and summarize the research published in professional peer-reviewed journals related to reading comprehension and school-age students who are deaf or hard of hearing between 1963 and 2005. Fifty-two studies were identified and reviewed. The results were summarized in a table and reported descriptively. The most frequently researched reading comprehension teaching strategies were identified and discussed. The need for more research in this critical area was noted.

Abstract:This chapter discusses comprehension theory, practice, and critical nature. It discusses current theoretical perspectives on reading and also presents the essential components of reading comprehension instruction. The chapter presents the value of integrated language arts, motivation and engagement, and differentiated instruction. It also focuses on questioning, text and text structure, graphic organizers, and alternative representations of thinking. The chapter outlines the importance of vocabulary, reading comprehension strategies, online reading, and authentic assessment. It also shares a rationale for teaching all readers to be critically literate. The principles of critical literacy have been applied to a wide range of contexts to challenge social norms and oppressive status quo practices. Gender role stereotyping is the context that seems to occur most frequently. The second most common context in critical literacy addresses issues of culture and the content of the curriculum.
Exploring sources of poor reading comprehension in English language learners

Abstract:This study examined the sources of reading comprehension difficulties in English language learners (ELLs). The characteristics of ELL poor comprehenders were compared to their English as a first language (EL1) peers. Participants included 124 ELLs who spoke Chinese as an L1 and 79 EL1 students. Using a regression technique based on age, non-verbal reasoning, word reading accuracy, and word reading fluency, three types of comprehenders (poor, average, and good) were identified within each language group. The groups were then compared on measures of oral language skills (vocabulary breadth, vocabulary depth, and listening comprehension), metalinguistic skills (morphological awareness and syntactic awareness), working memory, and higher-level processing skills (inference, conjunction use, and comprehension monitoring). ELL poor comprehenders had significantly lower scores than ELL average and good comprehenders on vocabulary breadth, listening comprehension, and morphological awareness, whereas there were no significant differences between the average and good comprehender groups on these skills. Additionally, both ELL poor and average comprehenders had lower scores than ELL good comprehenders on all three higher-level skills. Finally, results showed that ELL poor comprehenders scored lower than EL1 poor comprehenders on vocabulary breadth, listening comprehension, and morphological awareness, but the two groups did not differ on higher-level skills. Theoretical and educational implications for the identification and instruction of ELL poor comprehenders are discussed.

Abstract:Reading Comprehension (RC) is a task of answering a question from a given passage or a set of passages. In the case of multiple passages, the task is to find the best possible answer to the question. Recent trials and experiments in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP) have proved that machines can be provided with the ability to not only process the text in the passage and understand its meaning to answer the question from the passage, but also can surpass the Human Performance on many datasets such as Standford's Question Answering Dataset (SQuAD). This paper presents a study on Reading Comprehension and its evolution in Natural Language Processing over the past few decades. We shall also study how the task of Single Document Reading Comprehension acts as a building block for our Multi-Document Reading Comprehension System. In the latter half of the paper, we'll be studying about a recently proposed model for Multi-Document Reading Comprehension - RE3QA that is comprised of a Reader, Retriever, and a Re-ranker based network to fetch the best possible answer from a given set of passages.

Abstract:We propose a review of the literature of the studies investigating reading acquisition in intellectual deficiency (ID), with particular focus on the explanatory factors for reading difficulties. Indeed, we explore the role of intellectual efficiency, perceptual abilities, oral language development, phonological processing and memory. The study of reading acquisition in ID is a challenge because of a high degree of heterogeneity in the results which, together with other variables influencing learning and development. This review has allowed us to understand that there are multiple reasons why individuals with ID have difficulty learning to read. More specifically, there is a link between reading skills and certain cognitive skills, such as perception, oral language, phonological processing and working memory.

Abstract:The lexical quality hypothesis (LQH) claims that variation in the quality of word representations has consequences for reading skill, including comprehension. High lexical quality includes well-specified and partly redundant representations of form (orthography and phonology) and flexible representations of meaning, allowing for rapid and reliable meaning retrieval. Low-quality representations lead to specific word-related problems in comprehension. Six lines of research on adult readers demonstrate some of the implications of the LQH. First, large-scale correlational results show the general interdependence of comprehension and lexical skill while identifying disassociations that allow focus on comprehension-specific skill. Second, word-level semantic processing studies show comprehension skill differences in the time course of form-meaning confusions. Studies of rare vocabulary learning using event-related potentials (ERPs) show that, third, skilled comprehenders learn new words more effectively and show stronger ERP indicators for memory of the word learning event and, fourth, suggest skill differences in the stability of orthographic representations. Fifth, ERP markers show comprehension skill differences in meaning processing of ordinary words. Finally, in text reading, ERP results demonstrate momentary difficulties for low-skill comprehenders in integrating a word with the prior text. The studies provide evidence that word-level knowledge has consequences for word meaning processes in comprehension.

Abstract:Reading in alphabetic orthography requires analysis and recognition of specific attributes of visual stimuli, and generation, reactivation, and use of mental images of letters and words. This study evaluated the role of visual analysis and mental imagery in reading performances of students at different stages of reading acquisition. Reading "comprehension," "accuracy," and "speed," were analyzed. Participants were 90 children who attended primary school. Children were assessed in the first and third grade. The results highlighted that mental imagery and visual analysis influenced reading acquisition. These abilities are differently involved in the three dimensions of reading skill. The issues of this study have practical and educational applications. The early assessment of visual analysis and mental imagery skills and specific training on these abilities could contribute to facilitate reading acquisition. Strategies of intervention centered on visual imagery could increase reading performances in typically developing children and children at risk of learning difficulties.

Abstract:Teachers’ knowledge of reading comprehension processes is underresearched relative to teachers’ knowledge of word identification and phonological awareness. In this study, sixty-two pre- and inservice upper-elementary and middle school English language arts, science, and social studies teachers completed in-depth interview protocols eliciting multiple aspects of knowledge about reading comprehension processes. Using qualitative analyses, we found that teachers in the sample demonstrated knowledge in four consistent areas: strategizing, grappling to achieve coherence, leveraging and producing knowledge, and participating socially. We propose these concepts as a starting point for characterizing teachers’ knowledge of how comprehension processes work when they are well developed. We discuss implications of these findings for future research and practice in literacy teacher education.

Abstract:Purpose of the study: The targets of the review were to figure out the effect of perusing literary texts on the improvement of language abilities, working of jargon, punctuation, grammar, composing articulation and the highlight composing abilities of the ESL students. The ESL students deal with a ton of issues in language learning, especially during the time spent composing abilities; because the most common way of composing needs its very own topic, a circumstance, which customary course books loaded with syntax practices can't give. Methodology: The data-gathering instruments include Questionnaires; an Open-ended Questionnaire, a Close-ended Questionnaire and a Semi-structured Interview. This research was qualitative. For the convenience of the current research, the researcher primarily gathered open-ended items from the respondents through an open-ended questionnaire and semi-structured interview schedule from students and teachers respectively. Main Findings: In order to take maximum benefits from literature for language learning especially writing skills, activity-based leaning needs to be given emphasis in the classroom. But there should be systematic criteria for selection of classroom activities. Applications of the study: This study provides an awareness of the way language is used in literary discourse for the conveying of unique message.The students can study literature for only language learning. Literature should first succeed as literary experience no matter how much it helps in language learning. Novelty/Originality of the study: This study can pave grounds for the ESL learners in the language classroom using literary texts as the material especially designed for the writing activities (for children aged 5-12 years).This study would increase ESL learners’ interest in both reading literary texts and doing writing tasks based on them.

Abstract:Roles of Ca2+ and protein kinase C (PKC) in the regulation of acid/base transport in isolated rabbit proximal tubules were investigated by measuring cytosolic Ca2+ concentrations ([Ca2+]i) and cell pH (pHi) with fluorescent probes. Ionomycin (0.2 microM) increased [Ca2+]i by approximately 200 nM but did not affect the basolateral Na(+)-HCO3- cotransporter. However, the apical Na+/H+ exchanger was inhibited by 50% by ionomycin, and this inhibition was abolished either by 1,2-bis(2-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid, an intracellular Ca2+ chelator, or by KN-62, an inhibitor of calcium-calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaM kinase II). On the other hand, phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA, 0.5 microM) did not affect the apical Na+/H+ exchanger but did stimulate the basolateral Na(+)-HCO3- cotransporter by 60-80%, and this stimulation was prevented by calphostin C, an inhibitor of PKC. Consistent with the cotransporter stimulation, PMA decreased steady-state pHi in the presence of CO2/ HCO3-. These results indicate that 1) the acute increase in [Ca2+]i within physiological ranges inhibits the apical Na+/H+ exchanger, probably through mediation of CaM kinase II; and 2) the short-term PKC activation stimulates the basolateral Na(+)-HCO3- cotransporter.
