Abstract:An experiment is described which investigates the effect of rehearsal delay on long-term imitation of a film model. The hypothesis tested was that a delay in the opportunity to imitate a film model would result in a reduction of imitation, ‘flitting’ and range of activities during play in the stimulus situation. One group of children played immediately after exposure to the film, a second after a delay of one day, a third after one week. All groups returned after an interval of seven days, and again after 4–5 months. The hypotheses were not accepted; the film influenced behaviour whatever the delay, but it was noted that the general effect of the films on activity level was less marked during the second session in the experimental situation, and increased after a few months' interval. The long-term effect of the film model was noted, and it was observed that at this time retention of the film model's behaviour was not related to imitative behaviour.
Coherent detection method of gravitational wave bursts for spherical antennas

Abstract:We provide a comprehensive theoretical framework and a quantitative test of the method we recently proposed for processing data from a spherical detector with five or six transducers. Our algorithm is a trigger event generator performing a coherent analysis of the sphere channels. In order to test our pipeline we first built a detailed numerical model of the detector, including deviations from the ideal case such as quadrupole modes splitting, and non-identical transducer readout chains. This model, coupled with a Gaussian noise generator, has then been used to produce six time series, corresponding to the outputs of the six transducers attached to the sphere. We finally injected gravitational wave burst signals into the data stream, as well as bursts of non-gravitational origin in order to mimic the presence of non-Gaussian noise, and then processed the mock data. We report quantitative results for the detection efficiency versus false alarm rate and for the affordability of the reconstruction of the direction of arrival. In particular, the combination of the two direction reconstruction methods can reduce by a factor of 10 the number false alarms due to the non-Gaussian noise.

Abstract:The paper investigates the queueing behavior of the sleep mode operation in IEEE 802.16e for conserving the power of an mobile station (MS) in terms of the dropping probability and the mean waiting times of packets in the base station (BS) queue. In the sleep mode, when an MS wakes up at the end of each sleep interval and there is traffic addressed to it, this is notified in the listening interval immediately following the sleep interval. Otherwise, an MS again enters the sleep mode with a sleep interval which is double the length of the previous one. We modeled this sleep mode operation as M/GI/1/N with multiple vacations whose periods depend on the previous one. Our work may be a rough guide to understanding the BS queueing behavior according to parameters such as the minimum and maximum sleep interval, the BS queue size and the arrival rate of packets at a BS.

Abstract:Human annotation of natural language facilitates standardized evaluation of natural language processing systems and supports automated feature extraction. This document consists of instructions for annotating the temporal information in scheduling dialogs, dialogs in which the participants schedule a meeting with one another. Task-oriented dialogs, such as these are, would arise in many useful applications, for instance, automated information providers and automated phone operators. Explicit instructions support good inter-rater reliability and serve as documentation for the classes being annotated.

Spherical gravitational wave detectors: An approach for real time data analysis

Abstract:We have developed a full model to simulate spherical detectors where all main sources of noise are considered. We have built a computer code for determining the source direction and the wave polarization (solution of the inverse problem) in real time acquisition. The digital filter used is a simple bandpass filter. The ``data'' used for testing our code was simulated, which considers both the source signal and detector noise. The detector noise includes the antenna thermal, back action, phase noise, series noise and thermal from transducer coupled masses. The simulated noise takes into account all these noises and the antenna-transducers coupling. The detector transfer function was calculated for a spherical antenna with six two-mode parametric transducers. From the results we determined that spherical detectors are able to locate an astrophysical source in the sky in real time as long as the signal-to-noise ratio for a burst signal is equal to or higher than 3.

Abstract:The direct detection of gravitational waves will provide valuable astrophysical information about many celestial objects. Also, it will be an important test to general relativity and other theories of gravitation. The gravitational wave detector SCHENBERG has recently undergone its first test run. It is expected to have its first scientific run soon. In this work the data analysis system of this spherical, resonant mass detector is tested through the simulation of the detection of gravitational waves generated during the inspiralling phase of a binary system. It is shown from the simulated data that it is not necessary to have all six transducers operational in order to determine the source's direction and the wave's amplitudes.

Abstract:We report the results of a detailed numerical analysis of a real resonant spherical gravitational wave antenna operating with six resonant two-mode capacitive transducers read out by superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUID) amplifiers. We derive a set of equations to describe the electro-mechanical dynamics of the detector. The model takes into account the effect of all the noise sources present in each transducer chain: the thermal noise associated with the mechanical resonators, the thermal noise from the superconducting impedance matching transformer, the back-action noise and the additive current noise of the SQUID amplifier. Asymmetries in the detector signal-to-noise ratio and bandwidth, coming from considering the transducers not as point-like objects but as sensor with physically defined geometry and dimension, are also investigated. We calculate the sensitivity for an ultracryogenic, 30 ton, 2 meter in diameter, spherical detector with optimal and non-optimal impedance matching of the electrical read-out scheme to the mechanical modes. The results of the analysis is useful not only to optimize existing smaller mass spherical detector like MiniGrail, in Leiden, but also as a technological guideline for future massive detectors. Furthermore we calculate the antenna patterns when the sphere operates with one, three and six resonators. The sky coverage for two detectors based in The Netherlands and Brasil and operating in coincidence is also estimated. Finally, we describe and numerically verify a calibration and filtering procedure useful for diagnostic and detection purposes in analogy with existing resonant bar detectors.

A Superconducting Levitated Detector of Gravitational Waves

Abstract:A magnetically levitated mass couples to gravity and can act as an effective gravitational wave detector. We show that a superconducting sphere levitated in a quadrupolar magnetic field, when excited by a gravitational wave, will produce magnetic field fluctuations that can be read out using a flux tunable microwave resonator. With a readout operating at the standard quantum limit, such a system could achieve broadband strain noise sensitivity of $h \lesssim 10^{-19}/\sqrt{\rm Hz}$ for frequencies of $10~\mathrm{kHz}~-~1~\mathrm{MHz}$, opening new corridors for astrophysical probes of new physics.

Abstract:The main purpose of this study is to review the Schenberg resonant antenna transfer function and to recalculate the antenna design strain sensitivity for gravitational waves. We consider the spherical antenna with six transducers in the semi dodecahedral configuration. When coupled to the antenna, the transducer-sphere system will work as a mass-spring system with three masses. The first one is the antenna effective mass for each quadrupole mode, the second one is the mass of the mechanical structure of the transducer first mechanical mode and the third one is the effective mass of the transducer membrane that makes one of the transducer microwave cavity walls. All the calculations are done for the degenerate (all the sphere quadrupole mode frequencies equal) and non-degenerate sphere cases. We have come to the conclusion that the 'ultimate' sensitivity of an advanced version of Schenberg antenna (aSchenberg) is around the standard quantum limit (although the parametric transducers used could, in principle, surpass this limit). However, this sensitivity, in the frequency range where Schenberg operates, has already been achieved by the two aLIGOs in the O3 run, therefore, the only reasonable justification for remounting the Schenberg antenna and trying to place it in the sensitivity of the standard quantum limit would be to detect gravitational waves with another physical principle, different from the one used by laser interferometers. This other physical principle would be the absorption of the gravitational wave energy by a resonant mass like Schenberg.

Force distributions in three dimensional compressible granular packs

Abstract:We present an experimental investigation of the probability distribution of normal contact forces, $P(F)$, at the bottom boundary of static three dimensional packings of compressible granular materials. We find that the degree of deformation of individual grains plays a large role in determining the form of this distribution. For small amounts of deformation we find a small peak in $P(F)$ below the mean force with an exponential tail for forces larger than the mean force. As the degree of deformation is increased the peak at the mean force grows in height and the slope of the exponential tail increases.

Cavity Detection of Gravitational Waves: Where Do We Stand?

Abstract:High frequency gravitational waves (HFGWs) are predicted in various exotic scenarios involving both cosmological and astrophysical sources. These elusive signals have recently sparked the interest of a diverse community of researchers, due to the possibility of HFGW detection in the laboratory through graviton-photon conversion in strong magnetic fields. Notable examples include the redesign of the resonant cavities currently under development to detect the cosmic axion. In this work, we derive the sensitivities of some existing and planned resonant cavities to detect a HFGW background. As a concrete scenario, we consider the collective signals that originate from the merging of compact objects, such as two primordial black holes (PBHs) in the asteroid mass window. Our findings improve over existing work by explicitly discussing and quantifying the loss in the experimental reach due to the actual coherence of the source. We elucidate on the approach we adopt in relation with recent literature on the topic. Most notably, we give a recipe for the estimate of the stochastic background that focuses on the presence of the signal in the cavity at all times and showing that, in the relevant PBH mass region, the signal is dominated by coherent binary mergers.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the next detectors for gravitational wave astronomy which will be required after the current ground based detectors have completed their initial observations, and probably achieved the first direct detection of gravitational waves. The next detectors will need to have greater sensitivity, while also enabling the world array of detectors to have improved angular resolution to allow localisation of signal sources. Sect. 1 of this paper begins by reviewing proposals for the next ground based detectors, and presents an analysis of the sensitivity of an 8 km armlength detector, which is proposed as a safe and cost-effective means to attain a 4-fold improvement in sensitivity. The scientific benefits of creating a pair of such detectors in China and Australia is emphasised. Sect. 2 of this paper discusses the high performance suspension systems for test masses that will be an essential component for future detectors, while sect. 3 discusses solutions to the problem of Newtonian noise which arise from fluctuations in gravity gradient forces acting on test masses. Such gravitational perturbations cannot be shielded, and set limits to low frequency sensitivity unless measured and suppressed. Sects. 4 and 5 address critical operational technologies that will be ongoing issues in future detectors. Sect. 4 addresses the design of thermal compensation systems needed in all high optical power interferometers operating at room temperature. Parametric instability control is addressed in sect. 5. Only recently proven to occur in Advanced LIGO, parametric instability phenomenon brings both risks and opportunities for future detectors. The path to future enhancements of detectors will come from quantum measurement technologies. Sect. 6 focuses on the use of optomechanical devices for obtaining enhanced sensitivity, while sect. 7 reviews a range of quantum measurement options.

Abstract:Abstract A compact detector for space-time metric and curvature is highly desirable. Here we show that quantum spatial superpositions of mesoscopic objects could be exploited to create such a detector. We propose a specific form for such a detector and analyse how asymmetries in its design allow it to directly couple to the curvature. Moreover, we also find that its non-symmetric construction and the large mass of the interfered objects, enable the detection gravitational waves (GWs). Finally, we discuss how the construction of such a detector is in principle possible with a combination of state of the art techniques while taking into account the known sources of decoherence and noise. To this end, we use Stern–Gerlach interferometry with masses ∼10 −17 kg, where the interferometric signal is extracted by measuring spins and show that accelerations as low as 5 × 10 −15 ms −2 Hz −1/2 , as well as the frame dragging effects caused by the Earth, could be sensed. The GW sensitivity scales differently from the stray acceleration sensitivity, a unique feature of the proposed interferometer. We identify mitigation mechanisms for the known sources of noise, namely gravity gradient noise, uncertainty principle and electro-magnetic forces and show that it could potentially lead to a metre sized, orientable and vibrational noise (thermal/seismic) resilient detector of mid (ground based) and low (space based) frequency GWs from massive binaries (the predicted regimes are similar to those targeted by atom interferometers and LISA).

Beyond the Long Wavelength Approximation: Next-generation Gravitational-Wave Detectors and Frequency-dependent Antenna Patterns

Abstract:The response of a gravitational-wave (GW) interferometer is spatially modulated and is described by two antenna patterns, one for each polarization state of the waves. The antenna patterns are derived from the shape and size of the interferometer, usually under the assumption that the interferometer size is much smaller than the wavelength of the gravitational waves (long wavelength approximation, LWA). This assumption is well justified as long as the frequency of the gravitational waves is well below the free spectral range (FSR) of the Fabry-Perot cavities in the interferometer arms as it happens for current interferometers ($\mathrm{FSR}=37.5$~kHz for the LIGO interferometers and $\mathrm{FSR}=50$~kHz for Virgo and KAGRA). However, the LWA can no longer be taken for granted with third--generation instruments (Einstein Telescope, Cosmic Explorer and LISA) because of their longer arms. This has been known for some time, and previous analyses have mostly been carried out in the frequency domain. In this paper, we explore the behavior of the frequency--dependent antenna patterns in the time domain and in the time--frequency domain, with specific reference to the searches of short GW transients. We analyze the profound changes in the concept of Dominant Polarization Frame, which must be generalized in a nontrivial way, we show that the conventional likelihood-based analysis of coherence in different interferometers can no longer be applied as in current analysis pipelines, and that methods based on the null stream in triangular (60°) interferometers no longer work. Overall, this paper establishes methods and tools that can be used to overcome these difficulties in the unmodeled analysis of short GW transients.

Abstract:Abstract Gravitational waves from the neutron star coalescence GW170817 were observed from the inspiral, but not the high frequency postmerger nuclear matter motion. Optomechanical white light signal recycling has been proposed for achieving broadband sensitivity in gravitational wave detectors, but has been reliant on development of suitable ultra-low loss mechanical components. Here we show demonstrated optomechanical resonators that meet loss requirements for a white light signal recycling interferometer with strain sensitivity below 10 −24 Hz −1/2 at a few kHz. Experimental data for two resonators are combined with analytic models of interferometers similar to LIGO to demonstrate enhancement across a broader band of frequencies versus dual-recycled Fabry-Perot Michelson detectors. Candidate resonators are a silicon nitride membrane acoustically isolated by a phononic crystal, and a single-crystal quartz acoustic cavity. Optical power requirements favour the membrane resonator, while thermal noise performance favours the quartz resonator. Both could be implemented as add-on components to existing detectors.

Multifractal returns and Hierarchical Portfolio Theory

Abstract:We extend and test empirically the multifractal model of asset returns based on a multiplicative cascade of volatilities from large to small time scales. The multifractal description of asset fluctuations is generalized into a multivariate framework to account simultaneously for correlations across times scales and between a basket of assets. The reported empirical results show that this extension is pertinent for financial modelling. The second part of the paper applies this theory to portfolio optimisation. Our multi-scale description allows us to characterize the portfolio return distribution at all time scales simultaneously. The portfolio composition is predicted to change with the investment time horizon (i.e., the time scale) in a way that can be fully determined once an adequate measure of risk is chosen. We discuss the use of the fourth-order cumulant and of utility functions. While the portfolio volatility can be optimized in some cases for all time horizons, the kurtosis and higher normalized cumulants cannot be simultaneously optimized. For a fixed investment horizon, we study in details the influence of the number of periods, i.e., of the number of rebalancing of the portfolio. For the large risks quantified by the cumulants of order larger than two, the number of periods has a non-trivial influence, in contrast with Tobin's result valid in the mean-variance framework. This theory provides a fundamental framework for the conflicting optimization involved in the different time horizons and quantifies systematically the trade-offs for an optimal inter-temporal portfolio optimization.

Dielectric Haloscopes as Gravitational Wave Detectors

Abstract:We argue that dielectric haloscopes like MADMAX, originally designed for detecting axion dark matter, are also very promising gravitational wave detectors. Operated in resonant mode at frequencies around $\mathcal{O}(10\,\text{GHz})$, these detectors benefit from enhanced gravitational wave to photon conversion at the surfaces of a stack of thin dielectric disks. Since the gravitational wave is relativistic, there is an additional enhancement of the signal compared to the axion case due to increased conversion probability of gravitational waves to photons in the vacuum between the disks. A gravitational wave search using a dielectric haloscope imposes stringent requirements on the disk thickness and placement, but relaxed requirements on the disk smoothness. An advantage is the possibility of a broadband or hybrid resonant/broadband operation mode, which extends the frequency range down to $\mathcal{O}(100\,\text{MHz})$. We show that strain sensitivities down to $10^{-21} \text{Hz}^{-1/2} \times (10\,\text{GHz}/f)$ will be possible in the coming years for the broadband setup, while a resonant setup optimized for gravitational waves could even reach $3\times 10^{-23} \text{Hz}^{-1/2} \times (10\,\text{GHz}/f)$ with current technology.

Gravitational Wave Detection by Hollow-Core Fiber-Optics Mach-Zehnder Interferometry

Abstract:Recent advances in the field of very long distance optical communication suggest the adoption of the advanced technology based on Hollow Core Nested Anti-resonant Nodeless Fiber (HC-NANF) within the endeavour of Gravitational Wave detection using a Mach-Zehnder optical interferometer (MZ-IF). The proposal, consisting of a summary project of the device emphasizes the favorable properties of (MZ-IF) in comparison with Michelson Interferometer (MIF) currently in operation. The key feature of the proposed method consists of the use of a couple of "fibrated" metallic antennas enfolded by a very large (K x 8.10^4 with K=1,2,3 etc.) of coiled (HC-NANF) rings. This amounts to a corresponding fiber length: Leff = K x 1600 Km. The relevant properties of the device are noise reduction, absence of critical optical mirror alignment in a noisy environment, reduced spatial extension of the apparatus, exploration of the entire sky scenario by freely orientable antennas, a substational cost reduction of the apparatus. The remarkable properties of (HC-NANF), invented by F. Poletti in 2013 are currently investigated by his group at the University of Southampton (UK).

Novel Search for High-Frequency Gravitational Waves with Low-Mass Axion Haloscopes

Abstract:Gravitational waves (GWs) generate oscillating electromagnetic effects in the vicinity of external electric and magnetic fields. We discuss this phenomenon with a particular focus on reinterpreting the results of axion haloscopes based on lumped-element detectors, which probe GWs in the 100 kHz-100 MHz range. Measurements from ABRACADABRA and SHAFT already place bounds on GWs, although the present strain sensitivity is weak. However, we demonstrate that the sensitivity scaling with the volume of such instruments is significant-faster than for axions-and so rapid progress will be made in the future. With no modifications, DMRadio-m^{3} will have a GW strain sensitivity of h∼10^{-20} at 200 MHz. A simple modification of the pickup loop used to readout the induced magnetic flux can parametrically enhance the GW sensitivity, particularly at lower frequencies.
Low-Frequency Gravitational Wave Searches Using Spacecraft Doppler Tracking

Abstract:This paper discusses spacecraft Doppler tracking, the current-generation detector technology used in the low-frequency (∼millihertz) gravitational wave band. In the Doppler method the earth and a distant spacecraft act as free test masses with a ground-based precision Doppler tracking system continuously monitoring the earth-spacecraft relative dimensionless velocity 2Δv/c = Δν/ν0, where Δν is the Doppler shift and ν0 is the radio link carrier frequency. A gravitational wave having strain amplitude h incident on the earth-spacecraft system causes perturbations of order h in the time series of Δν/ν0. Unlike other detectors, the ∼ 1–10 AU earth-spacecraft separation makes the detector large compared with millihertz-band gravitational wavelengths, and thus times-of-flight of signals and radio waves through the apparatus are important. A burst signal, for example, is time-resolved into a characteristic signature: three discrete events in the Doppler time series. I discuss here the principles of operation of this detector (emphasizing transfer functions of gravitational wave signals and the principal noises to the Doppler time series), some data analysis techniques, experiments to date, and illustrations of sensitivity and current detector performance. I conclude with a discussion of how gravitational wave sensitivity can be improved in the low-frequency band.
