Abstract:In top-pair events where at least one of the tops decays semi-leptonically, the identification of the lepton charge allows to tag not only the top charge but also that of the subsequent b quark. In cases where the b also decays semi-leptonically, the charge of the two leptons can be used to probe CP violation in heavy flavor mixing and decays. This strategy to measure CP violation is independent of those adopted so far in experiments, and can already constrain non Standard Model sources of CP violation with current and near future LHC data. To demonstrate the potential of this method we construct two CP asymmetries based on same-sign and opposite-sign leptons and estimate their sensitivities. This proposal opens a new window for doing precision measurements of CP violation in b and c quark physics via high p_T processes at ATLAS and CMS.

Abstract:A detailed, model-independent study of CP violation at present and future electron-positron colliders is reported. Firstly, we investigate CP violation effects in $W$ boson and $t$ quark pair production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation and in two-photon fusion at a next $e^+e^-$ linear collider, where Compton-backscattered laser light off the electrons or positrons are employed as a powerful polarized photon source. Secondly, noting that there do not exist any direct measurements for the tau-lepton electric dipole moment (EDM), we address the importance of performing its direct measurements at $e^+e^-$ collisions off the Z-boson pole at TRISTAN, LEPII and CLEOII. We present a rough comparison of the potential of these experiments in the $\tau$ EDM measurements. Finally, we report on our recent works for probing CP violation in the semileptonic decays of the tau lepton, which involve two different intermediate resonances with large ratios of widths to masses, and which can be most efficiently identified at the planned $B$ and proposed $\tau$-charm factories. All the CP-violation phenomena in the processes under consideration, if discovered, imply new CP-violation mechanisms completely different from the Standard Model CP violation mechanism through the complex phase of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix.
Next-To-Leading Order Corrections to Single Top Quark Production and Decay at the Fermilab Tevatron: S-Channel Process

Abstract:We present a study of s-channel single top quark production at the upgraded Tevatron p (p) over bar collider, including the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to the production and decay of the top quark. The modified narrow width approximation was adopted to preserve the spin of the top quark in its production and decay. We discuss the effect of the different O(alpha(s)) contributions on the inclusive cross section as well as various kinematical distributions after imposing the relevant cuts to select s-channel single top signal events. In particular, the O(alpha(s)) decay contribution, while small in size, has a significant impact on several distributions. With the help of the best-Jet algorithm to reconstruct the top quark, we demonstrate that it is possible to study kinematical and spin correlations in s-channel single top events. We furthermore compare top quark spin measurements in two different bases and show how NLO corrections have to be taken into consideration in searches for the Higgs boson through W+/- H associated production at the Tevatron.

Abstract:Results are presented from a search for CP violation in top quark pair production, using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data used for this analysis consist of final states with two charged leptons collected by the CMS experiment, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The search uses two observables, $\mathcal{O}_1$ and $\mathcal{O}_3$, which are Lorentz scalars. The observable $\mathcal{O}_1$ is constructed from the four-momenta of the charged leptons and the reconstructed top quarks, while $\mathcal{O}_3$ consists of the four-momenta of the charged leptons and the b quarks originating from the top quarks. Asymmetries in these observables are sensitive to CP violation, and their measurement is used to determine the chromoelectric dipole moment of the top quark. The results are consistent with the expectation from the standard model.

Abstract:In the supersymmetry (SUSY) models, because of the mass difference between the left- and right-top squarks, the supersymmetric QCD interactions can generate parity violating effects in the production of tt̄ pairs. We show that SUSY QCD radiative corrections to the parity violating asymmetry in the production rates of the left- and right-handed top quarks via the qq̄→tt̄ process can reach about 3% at the Fermilab Tevatron with s=2 TeV. This could be observable with an integrated luminosity larger than 2fb−1. We also show that in these models the SUSY QCD radiative corrections to the tt̄ production rate are small unless gluinos are very light, of the order of 1 GeV.

Abstract:Search for single top quark and Higgs boson production is among the main goals for the upgraded Tevatron. We study the feasibility of single top quark and Higgs boson search at Tevatron both together since these processes have very similar final state signatures and so backgrounds. Calculation of the cross sections and a detailed analysis of various kinematic distributions for signal and for main backgrounds has been performed. As a result of this study an opimized set of cuts has been worked out for background suppression and for extraction of the signal. This study gives proof to the possibility of testing the nature of the {\wtb} coupling and of a direct measurement of the {\vtb} CKM parameter. The \bbbar -- pair effective mass distribution study allows to extract the signal of Higgs with mass up to about $100\gev$ at $\sqs = 2\tev$ and up to about $120\gev$ at $\sqs = 4\tev$ for integrated luminosity $L= 1000\ipb$.

Abstract:Cholestatic liver disorders are accompanied by the hepatic accumulation of cytotoxic bile acids that induce cell death. Increases in cAMP protect hepatocytes from bile acid-induced apoptosis by a cAMP-guanine exchange factor (cAMP-GEF)/phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt pathway. The aim of these studies was to identify the downstream substrate in this pathway and to determine at what level in the apoptotic cascade cytoprotection occurs. Since inhibitory phosphorylation of glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK) occurs downstream of PI3K/Akt and this phosphorylation has been implicated in cell survival, we conducted studies to determine whether GSK was downstream in cAMP-GEF/PI3K/Akt-mediated cytoprotection. Our results show that treatment of hepatocytes with the cAMP-GEF-specific analog, 4-(4-chlorophenylthio)-2'-O-methyladenosine-3',5'-cAMP, results in PI3K-dependent phosphorylation of GSK. Direct chemical inhibition of GSK in rat hepatocytes or human HUH7-NTCP cells with several structurally and functionally distinct inhibitors including bromoindirubin-3'-oxime (BIO), maleimides (SB216763, SB415286), thiadiazolidine derivatives, and LiCl attenuates apoptosis induced by glycochenodeoxycholate (GCDC). In addition, genetic silencing of the GSK β isoform with small interfering RNA attenuates GCDC apoptosis in HUH7-NTCP cells. Adenoviral inhibition of the Rap1 blocks both cAMP-GEF-mediated cytoprotection against GCDC-induced apoptosis and Akt/GSK3β phosphorylation. GCDC-induced phosphorylation of the proapoptotic kinase, c-Jun NH(2)-terminal kinase (JNK) is inhibited by GSK inhibition or cAMP-GEF activation. GCDC-induced apoptosis is accompanied by phosphorylation of the endoplasmic reticulum stress markers pIEF2α and IRE-1, and pretreatment with the cAMP-GEF analog or GSK inhibitors prevents this phosphorylation. Collectively, our results support the presence of a cAMP/cAMP-GEF/Rap1/PI3K/Akt/GSKβ survival pathway in hepatocytes that inhibits bile acid-induced JNK phosphorylation.

Abstract:This paper provides a review of the experimental studies of processes with a single top quark at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider and the LHC proton-proton collider. Single top-quark production in the t-channel process has been measured at both colliders. The s-channel process has been observed at the Tevatron, and its rate has been also measured at the center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the LHC in spite of the comparatively harsher background contamination. LHC data also brought the observation of the associated production of a single top quark with a W boson as well as with a Z boson. The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |Vtb| is extracted from the single-top-quark production cross sections, and t-channel events are used to measure several properties of the top quark and set constraints on models of physics beyond the Standard Model. Rare final states with a single top quark are searched for, as enhancements in their production rates, if observed, would be clear signs of new physics.

Abstract:A technique for separating top quark production from Standard Model background events is introduced. It is applicable to the channel in which one top quark decays semi-leptonically and its anti-quark decays hadronically into three jets, or vice versa. The method is shown to discriminate dramatically between Monte Carlo generated events with and without simulated top quarks of mass around 120 GeV and above. The simulations were performed with CDF detector characteristics incorporated, showing that the method is applicable to existing data.

Abstract:We study the top-Higgs coupling with a CP violating phase $\xi$ at a future multi-TeV muon collider. We focus on processes that are directly sensitive to the top quark Yukawa coupling: $t\bar{t}h$, $tbh\mu\nu$, and $t\bar{t}h\nu\bar{\nu}$ with $h\rightarrow b\bar{b}$ and semileptonic top decays. At different energies, different processes dominate the cross section, providing complementary information. At and above an energy of $\mathcal{O}(10)$ TeV, vector boson fusion processes dominate. As we show, in the Standard Model there is destructive interference in the vector boson fusion processes $t\bar{t}h\nu\bar{\nu}$ and $tbh\mu\nu$ between the top quark Yukawa and Higgs-gauge boson couplings. A CP-violating phase changes this interference, and the cross section measurement is very sensitive to the size of the CP-violating angle. Although we find that the cross sections are measured to $\mathcal{O}(50\%)$ statistical uncertainty at $1\sigma$, a 10 and 30 TeV muon collider can bound the CP-violating angle $|\xi|\lesssim9.0^\circ$ and $|\xi|\lesssim5.4^\circ$, respectively. However, cross section measurements are insensitive to the sign of the CP-violating angle. To determine that the coupling is truly CP violating, observables sensitive to CP-violation must be measured. We find in the $t\bar{t}h$ process the azimuthal angle between the $t+\bar{t}$ plane and the initial state muon+Higgs plane shows good discrimination for $\xi=\pm0.1\pi$. For the $tbh\mu\nu$ and $t\bar{t}h\nu\bar{\nu}$ processes, the operator proportional to $\left(\vec{p}_\mu\times\vec{p}_h\right)\cdot \vec{p}_t$ is sensitive to the sign of CP phase $\xi$. From these observables, we construct asymmetry parameters that show good distinction between different values and signs of the CP violating angle.

Abstract:We provide a detailed, model-independent, study for CP violation effects due to the T-odd top-quark electric dipole moment (EDM) and weak dipole moment (WDM) in the top-quark pair production via $e^+e^-$ and two-photon annihilation at a next $e^+e^-$ linear collider (NLC). There are two methods in detecting CP violation effects in these processes. One method makes use of measurements of various spin correlations in the final decay products of the produced top-quark pair, while the other is to measure various CP-odd polarization asymmetry effects of the initial states. In the $e^+e^-$ case only the first method can be used, and in the $\gamma\gamma$ case both methods can be employed. We provide a complete classification of angular correlations of the $t$ and $\bar{t}$ decay products under CP and CP\tilde{T} which greatly faciliate CP tests in the $e^+e^-$ mode. Concentrating on the second method with the Compton back-scattered high-energetic laser light off the electron or positron beam in the two-photon mode, we construct two CP-odd and CP\tilde{T}-even initial polarization configurations and apply them to investigating CP-violating effects due to the top-quark EDM. With a typical set of experimental parameters at the NLC, we compare the 1-\sigma sensitivities to the top-quark EDM and WDM in the $e^+e^-$ mode and the two-photon mode. Some model expectation values of the T-odd parameters are compared with the results.

Abstract:Since its discovery in the 1960s, the violation of CP symmetry has intrigued scientists and stimulated the advancement of knowledge in particle physics. Numerous experiments were designed and built to study it in increasingly deeper detail. Nowadays, the phenomenon is well framed within the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Nevertheless, new results are being produced by modern experiments at colliders that challenge the current understanding of the model. In this article, the current status of CP violation studies and the role of CP violation in the search for effects beyond the Standard Model are described together with the prospects for ongoing and future experiments.

Abstract:Experimental data on rare $B$-meson decays indicate deviations from Standard Model predictions. In studies of these decays, possible new sources of CP violation are often neglected. We discuss CP violation in the rare $B$-meson decays $B\to K\ell^+\ell^- (\ell = \mu,e)$ and point to two phenomena that arise when new sources of CP violation are included. First, the Wilson coefficients $C_{9\ell}$ and $C_{10\ell}$ become complex, and we show how we can extract their values from measurements of direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetries. Second, new sources of CP violation can generate nontrivial lepton flavour universality violation. Such a violation is usually measured through ratios like $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$, but we show that measuring only these ratios leaves a large parameter space unexplored. These results bring exciting opportunities to reveal New Physics effects in the high-precision era.

Abstract:We consider the recent measurement of the top quark forward-backward asymmetry at the Fermilab Tevatron, which shows a discrepancy of slightly more than 2 sigma compared to the standard model prediction. We find that t-channel exchange of a color sextet or triplet scalar particle can explain the measurement, while leaving the cross section for t (t) over bar production within measured uncertainties. Such particles have good discovery prospects by study of the kinematic structure of t (t) over bar + jets at the LHC.

Abstract:Results are presented on a search for CP violation in the production and decay of top quark-antiquark pairs in the lepton+jets channel. The search is based on data from proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Possible CP violation effects are evaluated by measuring uncorrected asymmetries in observables constructed from linearly independent four-momentum vectors of the final-state particles. The dimensionless chromoelectric dipole moment of the top quark obtained from the observed asymmetries is measured to be 0.04 $\pm$ 0.10 (stat) $\pm$ 0.07 (syst), and the asymmetries exhibit no evidence for CP-violating effects, consistent with expectations from the standard model.

Abstract:We propose a method of measuring the CP-odd part of the Yukawa interaction of Higgs boson and $\tau$ leptons by observing the forward-backward asymmetry in the decay $H \to \tau^+ \, \tau^- \, \gamma$. The source of such asymmetry is the interference of the CP-even loop-level contribution coming from $H \to Z \, \gamma \to \tau^+ \, \tau^- \, \gamma$ decay channel with the contribution from tree-level CP-odd Yukawa interaction. We find that the CP violating effect is maximum when the invariant mass of the $\tau^+ \, \tau^-$ pair is equal to the mass of the $Z$ boson. We propose and utilise various Dalitz plot asymmetries to quantify the maximal size of the asymmetry and perform Monte Carlo simulations to study the feasibility of measuring it in the high luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC).
