Abstract:The rest-frame UV emission from massive stars contains a wealth of information about the physical nature and conditions of star formation in galaxies. Using studies of the rest-frame UV, the past decade has witnessed the beginning of knowledge about the existence and properties of galaxies during the first few billion years after the Big Bang. This period of history corresponds to the formation of the first stars, the rapid formation of galaxy stellar populations, the reionization of the IGM, the production and dissemination of heavy elements, and the formation of the first black holes. Massive stars in these galaxies drive all of these events, and their light dominates the spectral energy distributions of galaxies. As we look to the 2020s, fundamental questions remain about the nature of these stellar populations and their evolution, from just before the peak of the cosmic star formation density (z~3), up to the epoch of reionization (z > 6). This next decade will provide transformative gains both in our ability to identify star-forming galaxies and accreting supermassive black holes at these early epochs with imaging surveys in the rest-frame UV (e.g., LSST, WFIRST). Ground-based, rest-frame UV spectroscopy on >20 m-class telescopes (e.g., GMT/TMT) offers the ability to investigate the astrophysical conditions in galaxies at the earliest cosmic times. This includes studies of the evolution in galaxy stellar populations, gas ionization (temperature, pressure), metallicity, and interstellar (and circumgalactic) gas kinematics and covering fractions. In this white paper, we describe the scientific prospects and the requirements for research in this area.

Quantitative Morphology of Galaxies Observed in the Ultraviolet

Abstract:We present a quantitative study of the far-ultraviolet (FUV) and optical morphology in 32 nearby galaxies and estimate the ``morphological k-correction'' expected if these objects were observed unevolved at high redshift. Using the common indices of central concentration (C) and rotational asymmetry (A) to quantify morphology, we consider independently two phenomena that give rise to this k-correction. Bandshifting, the decrease in rest-frame wavelength of light observed through optical filters, is explored by measuring these indices in several passbands for each galaxy, and it is found to be the primary driver of changes in C and A. In general, the optical trend found for decreasing C and increasing A when going to shorter wavelengths extends to the FUV. However, the patchy nature of recent star-formation in late-type galaxies, which is accentuated in the FUV, results in poor quantitative correspondence between morphologies determined in the optical and FUV. We then artificially redshift our FUV images into the Hubble Deep Field (HDF) filters to simulate various cosmological distance effects such as surface brightness dimming and loss of spatial resolution. Hubble types of many galaxies in our sample are not readily identifiable at redshifts beyond z ~ 1, and the galaxies themselves are difficult to detect beyond z ~ 3. Only features of the highest surface brightness remain visible at cosmological distances. Our simulations suggest that k-corrections alone are indeed capable of producing the peculiar morphologies observed at high redshift.

Abstract:We study muon-spin rotation (muSR) spectra in the mixed phase of highly anisotropic layered superconductors, specifically Bi_2+xSr_2-xCaCu_2O_8+delta (BSCCO), by modeling the fluid and solid phases of pancake vortices using liquid-state and density functional methods. The role of thermal fluctuations in causing motional narrowing of muSR lineshapes is quantified in terms of a first-principles theory of the flux-lattice melting transition. The effects of random point pinning are investigated using a replica treatment of liquid state correlations and a replicated density functional theory. Our results indicate that motional narrowing in the pure system, although substantial, cannot account for the remarkably small linewidths obtained experimentally at relatively high fields and low temperatures. We find that satisfactory agreement with the muSR data for BSCCO in this regime can be obtained through the ansatz that this ``phase'' is characterized by frozen short-range positional correlations reflecting the structure of the liquid just above the melting transition. This proposal is consistent with recent suggestions of a ``pinned liquid'' or ``glassy'' state of pancake vortices in the presence of pinning disorder. Our results for the high-temperature liquid phase indicate that measurable linewidths may be obtained in this phase as a consequence of density inhomogeneities induced by the pinning disorder. The results presented here comprise a unified, first-principles theoretical treatment of muSR spectra in highly anisotropic layered superconductors in terms of a controlled set of approximations.

The Ultraviolet Slopes of Early Universe Galaxies: The Impact of Bursty Star Formation, Dust, and Nebular Continuum Emission

Abstract:JWST has enabled the detection of the UV continuum of galaxies at z>10, evidencing a population of extremely blue, potentially dust-free galaxies. Interpreting the UV spectra of galaxies as they redden is complicated by the well-known degeneracy between stellar ages, dust, and nebular continuum. The main goal of this paper is to develop a theoretical model for the relationship between galaxy UV slopes, bursty star formation histories, dust evolution, and the contribution from nebular regions. We accomplish this via cosmological zoom-in simulations, and in specific, build a layered model where we simulate the UV slopes of galaxies with increasingly complex physics. Our main results follow. (i) Unattenuated stellar populations with no nebular emission exhibit a diverse range of intrinsic UV slopes, with values ranging from beta ~ -3 --> -2.2 due to long delays between bursts. This is manifested by an inverse correlation between the intrinsic UV slope and sSFR for early galaxies such that higher sSFR corresponds to bluer UV slopes. (ii) When including dust, our model galaxies demonstrate a rapid rise in dust obscuration between z ~ 8-10. This increase in dust mass is due to high grain-grain shattering rates, and enhanced growth per unit dust mass in very small grains, resulting in UV-detected galaxies at z ~ 12 descending into ALMA-detectable galaxies by z ~ 6. The rapid rise in dust content at z ~ 8-10 leads to a systematic reddening of the UV slopes during this redshift range. (iii) The inclusion of nebular continuum reddens the UV slope by a median factor Delta beta ~ 0.2-0.4. However, when including nebular continuum, our highest redshift galaxies (z~12) are insufficiently blue compared to observations; this may imply an evolving escape fraction from HII regions with redshift.

Measurements of the UV Upturn in Local and Intermediate-Redshift Ellipticals

Abstract:The rest-frame UV contains the most sensitive indicators of age for elliptical galaxies. While the near-UV flux from young ellipticals isolates the main sequence turnoff, the far-UV flux in old ellipticals is dominated by hot horizontal branch (HB) stars. This evolved population was first revealed by early UV observations showing a sharp flux increase shortward of rest-frame 2500 A, subsequently dubbed the "UV upturn." The phenomenon has since been characterized in many local ellipticals, and measurements at intermediate redshifts are now underway. Once ellipticals reach ages of 5-10 Gyr, stellar and galactic evolution theories predict that the UV-to-optical flux ratio can increase by orders of magnitude over timescales of a few Gyr, making the UV upturn the most rapidly evolving feature of these galaxies. It is thus expected to fade dramatically with increasing redshift. I review the imaging and spectroscopic evidence for the nature of the UV upturn in nearby ellipticals, and then present observations that measure the UV upturn at an epoch significantly earlier than our own. Far-UV data from the HUT demonstrate that the spectra of nearby ellipticals are dominated by hot HB stars. FOC UV imaging of M32 and the M31 bulge detected the UV-bright phases of post-HB stars, but did not reach the HB itself. Recent STIS observations were the first to image the hot HB and post-HB stars in the center of the nearest elliptical galaxy, M32; these observations also show a striking lack of UV-bright post-AGB stars. FOC observations of Abell 370, a rich galaxy cluster at z=0.375, show that giant ellipticals at a lookback time of 4 Gyr can exhibit strong UV luminosity, with no evidence of evolution in the UV upturn between this epoch and our own, thus implying a high redshift of formation (z_f > 4).

Abstract:We combine ultraviolet imaging of the survey field, taken with the XMM–Newton Optical Monitor telescope (XMM–OM) and the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory Ultraviolet and Optical Telescope (UVOT) in the UVM2 band, to measure rest-frame ultraviolet 1500 Å luminosity functions of star-forming galaxies with redshifts z between 0.4 and 0.6. In total the UVM2 imaging covers a sky area of 641 arcmin , and we detect 273 galaxies in the UVM2 image with . The luminosity function is fit by a Schechter function with best-fitting values for the faint end slope and characteristic absolute magnitude . In common with XMM–OM based studies at higher redshifts, our best-fitting value for is fainter than previous measurements. We argue that the purging of active galactic nuclei from the sample, facilitated by the cospatial X-ray survey carried out with XMM–Newton is important for the determination of . At the brightest absolute magnitudes ( ), the average UV colour of our galaxies is consistent with that of minimal-extinction local analogues, but the average UV colour is redder for galaxies at fainter absolute magnitudes, suggesting that higher levels of dust attenuation enter the sample at absolute magnitudes somewhat fainter than .

The Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Properties of Local Starbursts: Implications at High-Redshift

Abstract:We report the results of a systematic study of the vacuum-ultraviolet spectra of 45 starburst and related galaxies observed with the IUE satellite. These span broad ranges in metallicity, bolometric luminosity, and galaxy properties. The projected size of the IUE spectroscopic aperture is typically one to several kpc and therefore usually encompasses the entire starburst and is similar to the aperture-sizes used for spectroscopy of high-redshift galaxies. Our principal conclusion is that local starbursts occupy a very small fractional volume in the multi-dimensional manifold defined by such fundamental parameters as the extinction, metallicity, and vacuum-UV line strengths (both stellar and interstellar) of the starburst and the rotation speed (mass) and absolute magnitude of the starburst's `host' galaxy. More metal-rich starbursts are redder and more heavily extinguished in the UV, more luminous, have stronger vacuum-UV lines, and occur in more massive and optically-brighter host galaxies. The results on local starbursts suggest that the high-redshift `Lyman Drop-Out' galaxies are typically highly reddened and extinguished by dust (average factor of 5 to 10 in the UV), may have moderately high metallicities (0.1 to 1 times solar?), are probably building galaxies with stellar surface- mass-densities similar to present-day ellipticals, and may be suffering substantial losses of metal-enriched gas that can `pollute' the IGM.

Abstract:ABSTRACT We present an analysis of the ultraviolet (UV) continuum slopes (β) for a sample of 172 galaxy candidates at 8 < zphot < 16 selected from a combination of JWST NIRCam imaging and COSMOS/UltraVISTA ground-based near-infrared imaging. Focusing primarily on a new sample of 121 galaxies at 〈z〉 ≃ 11 selected from ≃ 320 arcmin2 of public JWST imaging data across 15 independent data sets, we investigate the evolution of β in the galaxy population at z ≥ 9. We find a significant trend between β and redshift, with the inverse-variance weighted mean UV slope evolving from 〈β〉 = −2.17 ± 0.06 at z = 9.5 to 〈β〉 = −2.59 ± 0.06 at z = 11.5. Based on a comparison with stellar population models including nebular continuum emission, we find that at z > 10.5 the average UV continuum slope is consistent with the intrinsic blue limit of dust-free stellar populations (βint ≃ −2.6). These results suggest that the moderately dust-reddened galaxy population at z < 10 was essentially unattenuated at z ≃ 11. The extremely blue galaxies being uncovered at z > 10 place important constraints on dust attenuation in galaxies in the early Universe, and imply that the already observed galaxy population is likely supplying an ionizing photon budget capable of maintaining ionized intergalactic medium fractions of ≳ 5 per cent at z ≃ 11.

An Ultraviolet-Selected Galaxy Redshift Survey - II: The Physical Nature of Star Formation in an Enlarged Sample

Abstract:We present further spectroscopic observations for a sample of galaxies selected in the vacuum ultraviolet (UV) at 2000 Åfrom the FOCA balloon-borne imaging camera of Milliard et al. (1992). This work represents an extension of the initial study of Treyer et al. (1998). Our enlarged catalogue contains 433 sources; 273 of these are galaxies, nearly all with redshifts z=0-0.4. Nebular emission line measurements are available for 216 galaxies, allowing us to address issues of reddening and metallicity. The UV and Halpha luminosity functions strengthen our earlier assertions that the local volume-averaged star formation rate is higher than indicated from earlier surveys. Moreover, internally within our sample, we do not find a steep rise in the UV luminosity density with redshift over 0<z<0.4. Our data is more consistent with a modest evolutionary trend as suggested by recent redshift survey results. We find no evidence for a significant number of AGN in our sample. We find the UV flux indicates a consistently higher mean star formation rate than that implied by the Halpha luminosity for typical constant or declining star formation histories. Following Glazebrook et al. (1999), we interpret this discrepancy in terms of a starburst model for our UV-luminous sources. Whilst we can explain most of our observations in this way, there remains a small population with extreme UV-optical colours which cannot be understood.

Abstract:The acquisition of deep Near-IR imaging with Wide Field Camera 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope has provided the opportunity to study the very-high redshift Universe. For galaxies up to $z\approx 7.7$ sufficient wavelength coverage exists to probe the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) continuum without contamination from either Lyman-$\alpha$ emission or the Lyman-$\alpha$ break. In this work we use Near-IR imaging to measure the rest-frame UV continuum colours of galaxies at $4.7<z<7.7$. We are have carefully defined a colour-colour selection to minimise any inherent bias in the measured UV continuum slope for the drop-out samples. For the highest-redshift sample ($6.7<z<7.7$), selected as $z_{f850lp}$-band dropouts, we find mean UV continuum colours approximately equal to zero (AB), consistent with a dust-free, solar metallicity, star forming population (or a moderately dusty population of low metallicity). At lower-redshift we find that the mean UV continuum colours of galaxies (over the same luminosity range) are redder, and that galaxies with higher luminosities are also slightly redder on average. One interpretation of this is that lower-redshift and more luminous galaxies are dustier, however this interpretation is complicated by the effects of the star formation history and metallicity and potentially the initial mass function on the UV continuum colours.

An Atlas of Hubble Space Telescope Ultraviolet Images of Nearby Galaxies

Abstract:We present an atlas of UV (∼ 2300 Å) images, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Faint Object Camera, of the central 22”× 22” of 110 galaxies. The observed galaxies are an unbiased selection constituting about one half of a complete sample of all large (D>6') and nearby (V< 2000 km s^-1) galaxies. This is the first extensive UV imaging survey of normal galaxies. The data are useful for studying star formation, low-level nuclear activity, and UV emission by evolved stellar populations in galaxies. At the HST resolution (∼ 0.05”), the images display an assortment of morphologies and UV brightnesses. These include bright nuclear point sources, compact young star clusters scattered in the field or arranged in circumnuclear rings, centrally-peaked diffuse light distributions, and galaxies with weak or undetected UV emission. We measure the integrated ∼ 2300 Å flux in each image, classify the UV morphology, and examine trends between these parameters and the optical properties of the galaxies.
The dusty, albeit ultraviolet bright infancy of galaxies

Abstract:The largest galaxies acquire their mass early on, when the Universe is still youthful. Cold streams violently feed these young galaxies a vast amount of fresh gas, resulting in very efficient star formation. Using a well resolved hydrodynamical simulation of galaxy formation, we demonstrate that these mammoth galaxies are already in place a couple of billion years after the Big Bang. Contrary to local starforming galaxies, where dust re-emits a large part of the stellar ultraviolet (UV) light at infrared and sub-millimetre wavelengths, our self-consistent modelling of dust extinction predicts that a substantial fraction of UV photons should escape from primordial galaxies. Such a model allows us to compute reliably the number of high redshift objects as a function of luminosity, and yields galaxies whose UV luminosities closely match those measured in the deepest observational surveys available. This agreement is remarkably good considering our admittedly still simple modelling of the interstellar medium (ISM) physics. The luminosity functions (LF) of virtual UV luminous galaxies coincide with the existing data over the whole redshift range from 4 to 7, provided cosmological parameters are set to their currently favoured values. Despite their considerable emission at short wavelengths, we anticipate that the counterparts of the brightest UV galaxies will be detected by future sub-millimetre facilities like ALMA

Probing the stellar populations and star formation history of early-type galaxies at $0 < z < 1.1$ in the rest-frame ultraviolet

Abstract:We measure the evolution of the rest-frame $NUV-V$ colors for early-type galaxies in clusters at $0<z<1.1$ using data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP), CFHT Large Area U-band Deep Survey (CLAUDS) and local SDSS clusters observed with GALEX. Our results show that there is an excess in the ultraviolet spectrum in most quiescent galaxies (compared to the expectations from models fitting their optical/infrared colors and spectra) below $z\sim0.6$, beyond which the excess UV emission fades rapidly. This evolution of the UV color is only consistent with the presence of a highly evolved, hot horizontal branch sub-population in these galaxies (amongst the majority cool and optically bright stars), comprising on average 10\% of the total stellar mass and forming at $z>3$. The blue UV colors of early-type galaxies at low-intermediate redshifts are likely driven by this sub-population being enriched in helium up to $\sim44\%$. At $z>0.8$ (when the extra UV component has not yet appeared) the data allows us to constrain the star formation histories of galaxies by fitting models to the evolution of their UV colors: we find that the epoch at which the stellar populations formed ranges between $3<z_{form}<10$ (corresponding to $0.5-2.2$ Gyrs after the Big Bang) with a star-formation e-folding timescale of $\tau=0.35-0.7$ Gyr, suggesting that these galaxies formed the majority of stars at very high redshift, with a brief yet intense burst of star-formation activity. The star formation history and chemical evolution of early-type galaxies resemble those of globular clusters, albeit on much larger scales.

Abstract:Recent observational and theoretical developments concerning the origin of the ultraviolet emission from ellipticals are reviewed and discussed,with particular, reference to the extensive set of predictions contained in Greggio and Renzini (1990). Strong support to the preferred hot horizontal branch and AGB-manque' scenario for the origin of the UV emission has come from UIT, HUT and HST data. However, the UV sensitivity of such space telescopes has proved insufficient to unambiguously detect the predicted fading away of the UV rising branch with redshift, that we consider the ultimate check for this scenario.

Abstract:Based on the digitized electron micrographs, we investigate a temperature evolution of Co/C film. The simple in usage quantitative characterization of the spatial disorder for systems of point objects has been employed. We show that a dominant increase of spatial inhomogeneity of cobalt phase is shifted towards the larger length scales along the sample heating temperature. The results allow the subtle differences of spatial inhomogeneity in thin metallic films to be explored.

Abstract:I will try to put the ultraluminous galaxy phenomenon into a broad cosmological context. Viewed from this perspective, the significance of ultraluminous galaxies and the `starburst vs. monster' debate becomes clear. Ultraluminous galaxies are fascinating in their own right, allow detailed study of the processes by which massive spheroids were built and the IGM was heated and polluted, and resemble the most luminous and dustiest galaxies at high-redshift. Ultraluminous galaxies were apparently far more common at z $\sim$ 3 than today. Recent inventories in the local universe of the cumulative effect of nuclear burning (metal production) and of monster-feeding (compact dark objects in galactic nuclei) imply that either stars or monsters could have generated the observed far-IR cosmic background. The starburst vs. monster debate has global, as well as local importance.

Stellar Populations and Galaxy Morphology at High Redshift

Abstract:In this article we investigate the morphology and stellar populations of high-redshift galaxies through multi-waveband HST imaging and ground-based spatially-resolved spectroscopy. We study the redshift evolution of galaxy morphology in the Hubble Deep Field, using the deep IDT-NICMOS near-infrared HST imaging coupled with spectroscopic and photometric redshifts. Using the multi-waveband data to compare the appearance of galaxies at the same rest-frame wavelengths reveals that "morphological k-corrections" (the change in appearance when viewing high-z objects at shorter rest-frame wavelengths) are only important in a minority of cases, and that galaxies were intrinsically more peculiar at high redshift. One example of significant morphological k-corrections is spiral galaxies, which often show more pronounced barred structure in the near-infrared than in the optical. Therefore, the apparent decline in the fraction of barred spirals at faint magnitudes in the optical HDF may be due to band-shifting effects at the higher redshifts, rather than intrinsic evolution. Using such features as the age-sensitive Balmer+4000Ang break, the spatially- resolved colours of distant galaxies in optical/near-infrared imaging can also be used to study their component stellar populations. We supplement this with deep Keck/LRIS spectroscopy of two extended sources: a chain galaxy at z=2.8 (HDF4-555.1, the "Hot Dog" - the brightest U-drop Lyman-break galaxy in the HDF) and a pair of z=4.04 gravitationally lensed arcs behind the cluster Abell 2390. The absence of measurable rotation across the z=2.8 chain galaxy implies that it is unikely to be a disk viewed edge on. With the resolution enhancement from lensing, we detect stellar populations of different ages in the z=4 arcs.

Aperture and Resolution Effects on Ultraviolet Star-Forming Properties: Insights from Local Galaxies and Implications for High-Redshift Observations

Abstract:We present an analysis of the effects of spectral resolution and aperture scales on derived galaxy properties using far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectra of local star-forming galaxies from the International Ultraviolet Explorer (R~250, FOV~10"x20") and Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope (R~15,000, FOV~2.5"). Using these spectra, we measured FUV luminosities, spectral slopes, dust attenuation, and equivalent widths. We find that galaxies with one dominant stellar cluster have FUV properties that are independent of aperture size, while galaxies with multiple bright clusters are sensitive to the total light fraction captured by the aperture. Additionally, we find significant correlations between the strength of stellar and interstellar absorption-lines and metallicity, indicating metallicity-dependent line-driven stellar winds and interstellar macroscopic gas flows shape the stellar and interstellar spectral lines, respectively. The observed line-strength versus metallicity relation of stellar-wind lines agrees with the prediction of population synthesis models for young starbursts. In particular, measurements of the strong stellar CIV 1548,1550 line provide an opportunity to determine stellar abundances as a complement to gas-phase abundances. We provide a relation between the equivalent width of the CIV line and the oxygen abundance of the galaxy. We discuss this relation in terms of the stellar-wind properties of massive stars. As the driving lines in stellar winds are mostly ionized iron species, the CIV line may eventually offer a method to probe alpha-element-to-iron ratios in star-forming galaxies once consistent models with non-solar abundance ratios are available. These results have important implications for the galaxy-scale, low-resolution observations of high-redshift galaxies from JWST (R~100-3,500).

Evolution of the UV Excess in Early-Type Galaxies

Abstract:We examine the UV emission from luminous early-type galaxies as a function of redshift. We perform a stacking analysis using Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) images of galaxies in the NOAO Deep Wide Field Survey (NDWFS) Boötes field and examine the evolution in the UV colors of the average galaxy. Our sample, selected to have minimal ongoing star formation based on the optical to mid-IR SEDs of the galaxies, includes 1843 galaxies spanning the redshift range $0.05\leq z\leq0.65$. We find evidence that the strength of the UV excess decreases, on average, with redshift, and our measurements also show moderate disagreement with previous models of the UV excess. Our results show little evolution in the shape of the UV continuum with redshift, consistent either with the binary model for the formation of Extreme Horizontal Branch (EHB) stars or with no evolution in EHB morphology with look-back time. However, the binary formation model predicts that the strength of the UV excess should also be relatively constant, in contradiction with our measured results. Finally, we see no significant influence of a galaxy's environment on the strength of its UV excess.
