Abstract:We study a three-dimensional dynamical system in two slow variables and one fast variable. We analyze the tangency of the unstable manifold of an equilibrium point with "the" repelling slow manifold, in the presence of a stable periodic orbit emerging from a Hopf bifurcation. This tangency heralds complicated and chaotic mixed-mode oscillations. We classify these solutions by studying returns to a two-dimensional cross section. We use the intersections of the slow manifolds as a basis for partitioning the section according to the number and type of turns made by trajectory segments. Transverse homoclinic orbits are among the invariant sets serving as a substrate of the dynamics on this cross-section. We then turn to a one-dimensional approximation of the global returns in the system, identifying saddle-node and period-doubling bifurcations. These are interpreted in the full system as bifurcations of mixed-mode oscillations. Finally, we contrast the dynamics of our one-dimensional approximation to classical results of the quadratic family of maps. We describe the transient trajectory of a critical point of the map over a range of parameter values.

Abstract:We study Floquet eigenspectra of a nonlinear two-mode system under a periodic driving of the off-diagonal coupling. By solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation numerically, we obtain triangular and loop structures near the crossings of different Floquet branches. At lower driving frequencies, we find "ring" and "double-ring" structures which are distinct from the well-known loop structure. The mechanism of the emergence of these structures is discussed and the parameter windows of their existence are obtained analytically. In addition, we study the evolution of the system under the driving with an adiabatic sweep and find there are some dynamically unstable states in the Floquet eigenspectra which break the quantum adiabaticity.

Abstract:Mixed-mode oscillations (abbreviated as MMOs) belong to a typical kind of fast/slow dynamical behavior, and how to investigate the mechanism is an important problem in nonlinear dynamics. In this paper, we explore the MMOs induced by the bifurcation delay phenomenon and twist of the trajectories in space based on a coupled system consisting of a Van der Pol system and a Duffing oscillator with two potential wells. Regarding the low-frequency external excitation as a generalized state variable, we obtain the traditional fast and slow subsystems. Appling the equilibrium analysis and bifurcation theory, the stability critical conditions of the equilibrium and the generation conditions of fold and Hopf bifurcation are also presented. To analyze the critical conditions clearly, the two-parameter bifurcation and one-parameter bifurcation diagrams are performed by using numerical simulation method. The bifurcation characteristics are studied, especially the effects of parameter δ on the bifurcation structures. We find that the fast subsystem performs different dynamical behaviors such as fold bifurcation of limit cycles, period-doubling bifurcations, inverse-period-doubling bifurcations and chaos, when parameter δ is taken at different values. By using phase diagrams, time series, maximum Lyapunov exponent diagrams, three-dimensional phase diagrams and superimposed diagrams, the mechanisms of the MMOs are investigated numerically in detail. The Hopf bifurcation delay can lead the trajectories to arrive at the vector fields of the equilibrium point and limit cycles. In addition, the chaotic behaviors can be found on the route of period doubling, which lead to the chaotic spiking-state-oscillations types. Our findings are helpful to understand the generation of the MMOs and intensify the understanding of some special dynamical behaviors on the MMOs.

Abstract:We present a mathematical study of some aspects of mixed-mode oscillation (MMO) dynamics in a three time-scale system of ODEs as well as analyse related features of a biophysical model of a neuron from the entorhinal cortex that serves as a motivation for our study. The neuronal model includes standard spiking currents (sodium and potassium) that play a critical role in the analysis of the interspike interval as well as persistent sodium and slow potassium (M) currents. We reduce the dimensionality of the neuronal model from six to three dimensions in order to investigate a regime in which MMOs are generated and to motivate the three time-scale model system upon which we focus our study. We further analyse in detail the mechanism of the transition from MMOs to spiking in our model system. In particular, we prove the existence of a special solution, a singular primary canard, that serves as a transition between MMOs and spiking in the singular limit by employing appropriate rescalings and centre manifold reductions. Additionally, we conjecture that the singular canard solution is the limit of a family of canards and provides numerical evidence for the conjecture.

Abstract:We study a slow-fast system with two slow and one fast variables. We assume that the slow manifold of the system possesses a fold and there is an equilibrium of the system in a small neighbourhood of the fold. We derive a normal form for the system in a neighbourhood of the pair "equilibrium-fold" and study the dynamics of the normal form. In particular, as the ratio of two time scales tends to zero we obtain an asymptotic formula for the Poincaré map and calculate the parameter values for the first period-doubling bifurcation. The theory is applied to a generalization of the FitzHugh-Nagumo system.

Abstract:For a class of $(N+1)$-dimensional systems of differential delay equations with a cyclic and monotone negative feedback structure, we construct a two-dimensional invariant manifold, on which phase curves spiral outward towards a bounding periodic orbit. For this to happen we assume essentially only instability of the zero equilibrium. Methods of the Poincaré-Bendixson theory due to Mallet-Paret and Sell are combined with techniques used by Walther for the scalar case $(N = 0)$. Statements on the attractor location and on parameter borders concerning stability and oscillation are included. The results apply to models for gene regulatory systems, e.g. the `repressilator' system.

Following marginal stability manifolds in quasilinear dynamical reductions of multiscale flows in two space dimensions

Abstract:A two-dimensional extension of a recently developed formalism for slow-fast quasilinear (QL) systems subject to fast instabilities is derived. Prior work has demonstrated that the emergent dynamics of these systems is characterized by a slow evolution of mean fields coupled to marginally stable, fast fluctuation fields. By exploiting this emergent behavior, an efficient fast-eigenvalue/slow-initial-value solution algorithm can be developed in which the amplitude of the fast fluctuations is slaved to the slowly evolving mean fields to ensure marginal stability (and temporal scale separation) is maintained. For 2D systems that are spatially-extended in one direction, the fluctuation eigenfunctions are labeled by their wavenumbers characterizing spatial variability in that direction, and the marginal mode(s) also must coincide with the fastest-growing mode(s) over all admissible wavenumbers. Here, we introduce two equivalent procedures for deriving an ordinary differential equation governing the slow evolution of the wavenumber of the fastest-growing fluctuation mode that simultaneously must be slaved to the mean dynamics to ensure the mode has zero growth rate. We illustrate the procedure in the context of a 2D model partial differential equation that shares certain attributes with the equations governing strongly stratified shear flows. The slaved evolution follows one or more marginal stability manifolds, which constitute select state-space structures that are not invariant under the full flow dynamics yet capture quasi-coherent states in physical space in a manner analogous to invariant solutions identified in, e.g., transitionally-turbulent shear flows. Accordingly, we propose that marginal stability manifolds are central organizing structures in a dynamical systems description of certain classes of multiscale flows where scale separation justifies a QL approximation of the dynamics.

Abstract:In this study, considering a bi-stable plasma model with slow parametric excitation, the bifurcation of periodic and chaotic responses as well as the resulting fast–slow motions is discussed analytically and numerically. For a nonautonomous fast sub-system, the generalized harmonic balancing method is utilized to obtain an averaged system. Bifurcation analysis about the averaged system shows that the critical manifolds form a S-shape structure. Meanwhile, supercritical and subcritical period doubling (PD) occurs on the upper branch simultaneously. As the frequency of the external excitation changes, bifurcation points on the limit cycle manifolds can present different relative locations. Moreover, an additional bi-stable structure induced by Cusp bifurcation emanates from the upper branch. On the other hand, the existence of a chaotic attractor and the corresponding boundary crisis phenomenon are verified using the Melnikov method and the basin of attraction. The structures of the numerical bifurcation diagram show good agreements with the analytical results. Considering two cases of low-frequency excitation, the corresponding fast–slow dynamics are discussed. It is found that, when the fast–slow flow passing the subcritical PD point, a low frequency with different magnitudes will lead to two patterns of bifurcation delay, i.e., the typical one and the excessive delay, which suppress the PD. As for the boundary crisis point, the slow passage effects show no distinct influence. Thus, three transition mechanisms based on two cases of the bifurcation structure are explained, including “fold of cycle–fold of cycle” type, “fold of cycle–delayed subcritical PD” type, and “fold of cycle–boundary crisis” type.

Abstract:Localized patterns in singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion equations typically consist of slow parts -- in which the associated solution follows an orbit on a slow manifold in a reduced spatial dynamical system -- alternated by fast excursions -- in which the solution jumps from one slow manifold to another, or back to the original slow manifold. In this paper we consider the existence and stability of stationary and traveling slow localized patterns that do not exhibit such jumps, i.e. that are completely embedded in a slow manifold of the singularly perturbed spatial dynamical system. These patterns have rarely been considered in the literature, for two reasons: (i) in the classical Gray-Scott/Gierer-Meinhardt type models that dominate the literature, the flow on the slow manifold is typically linear and thus cannot exhibit homoclinic pulse or heteroclinic front solutions; (ii) the slow manifolds occurring in the literature are typically `vertical' -- i.e. given by $u \equiv u_0$, where $u$ is the fast variable -- so that the stability problem is determined by a simple (decoupled) scalar equation. The present research concerns a general system of singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion equations and is motivated by several explicit ecosystem models that do give rise to non-vertical normally hyperbolic slow manifolds on which the flow may exhibit both homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits -- that correspond to either stationary or traveling localized patterns. The associated spectral stability problems are at leading order given by a nonlinear, but scalar, eigenvalue problem with Sturm-Liouville characteristics and we establish that homoclinic pulse patterns are typically unstable, while heteroclinic fronts can either be stable or unstable. However, we also show that homoclinic pulse patterns that are asymptotically close to a heteroclinic cycle may be stable.

From waves to convection and back again: The phase space of stably stratified turbulence

Abstract:We show that the phase space of stratified turbulence mainly consists of two slow invariant manifolds with rich physics, embedded on a larger basin with fast evolution. A local invariant manifold in the vicinity of the fluid at equilibrium corresponds to waves, while a global invariant manifold corresponds to the onset of local convection. Using a reduced model derived from the Boussinesq equations, we propose that waves accumulate energy nonlinearly up to a point such that fluid elements escape from the local manifold and evolve fast to the global manifold, where kinetic energy can be more efficiently dissipated. After this, fluid elements return to the first manifold. As the stratification increases, the volume of the first manifold increases, and the second manifold becomes harder to access. This explains recent observations of enhanced intermittency and marginal instability in these flows. The reduced model also allows us to study structure formation, alignment of field gradients in the flow, and to identify balance relations that hold for each fluid element.

Multimodal oscillations in systems with strong contraction

Abstract:One- and two-parameter families of flows in $R^3$ near an Andronov-Hopf bifurcation (AHB) are investigated in this work. We identify conditions on the global vector field, which yield a rich family of multimodal orbits passing close to a weakly unstable saddle-focus and perform a detailed asymptotic analysis of the trajectories in the vicinity of the saddle-focus. Our analysis covers both cases of sub- and supercritical AHB. For the supercritical case, we find that the periodic orbits born from the AHB are bimodal when viewed in the frame of coordinates generated by the linearization about the bifurcating equilibrium. If the AHB is subcritical, it is accompanied by the appearance of multimodal orbits, which consist of long series of nearly harmonic oscillations separated by large amplitude spikes. We analyze the dependence of the interspike intervals (which can be extremely long) on the control parameters. In particular, we show that the interspike intervals grow logarithmically as the boundary between regions of sub- and supercritical AHB is approached in the parameter space. We also identify a window of complex and possibly chaotic oscillations near the boundary between the regions of sub- and supercritical AHB and explain the mechanism generating these oscillations. This work is motivated by the numerical results for a finite-dimensional approximation of a free boundary problem modeling solid fuel combustion.

Abstract:The collective behavior of the ensembles of coupled nonlinear oscillator is one of the most interesting and important problems in modern nonlinear dynamics. In this paper, we study rotational dynamics, in particular space-time structures, in locally coupled identical pendulum-type elements chains that describe the behavior of phase-locked-loop systems, distributed Josephson junctions, coupled electrical machines, etc. The control parameters in the considered chains are: dissipation, coupling strength, and number of elements. In the system under consideration, the realized modes are synchronous in frequency and synchronous (in-phase) or asynchronous (out-of-phase) in phase. In the low dissipation case, the in-phase synchronous rotational regime instability region boundaries are theoretically found and the bifurcations leading to the loss of its stability are determined. The analysis was carried out for chains of arbitrary length. The existence of various out-of-phase synchronous rotational modes types is revealed: completely asynchronous in phases and the cluster in-phase synchronization regime. Regularities of transitions from one type of out-of-phase synchronous mode to another are established. It was found that at certain coupling parameter values, the coexistence of stable in-phase and out-of-phase synchronous modes is possible. It was found that for arbitrary chain length, the number of possible stable out-of-phase modes is always one less than the chain elements number. Analytical results are confirmed by numerical simulations.

Computing Slow Manifolds of Saddle Type

Abstract:Slow manifolds are important geometric structures in the state spaces of dynamical systems with multiple time scales. This paper introduces an algorithm for computing trajectories on slow manifolds that are normally hyperbolic with both stable and unstable fast manifolds. We present two examples of bifurcation problems where these manifolds play a key role and a third example in which saddle-type slow manifolds are part of a traveling wave profile of a partial differential equation. Initial value solvers are incapable of computing trajectories on saddle-type slow manifolds, so the slow manifold of saddle type (SMST) algorithm presented here is formulated as a boundary value method. We take an empirical approach here to assessing the accuracy and effectiveness of the algorithm.

Abstract:Geometric singular perturbation theory provides a powerful mathematical framework for the analysis of 'stationary' multiple time-scale systems which possess a critical manifold, i.e. a smooth manifold of steady states for the limiting fast subsystem, particularly when combined with a method of desingularization known as blow-up. The theory for 'oscillatory' multiple time-scale systems which possess a limit cycle manifold instead of (or in addition to) a critical manifold is less developed, particularly in the non-normally hyperbolic regime. We use the blow-up method to analyse the global oscillatory transition near a regular folded limit cycle manifold in a class of three time-scale 'semi-oscillatory' systems with two small parameters. The systems considered behave like oscillatory systems as the smallest perturbation parameter tends to zero, and stationary systems as both perturbation parameters tend to zero. The additional time-scale structure is crucial for the applicability of the blow-up method, which cannot be applied directly to the two time-scale oscillatory counterpart of the problem. Our methods allow us to describe the asymptotics and strong contractivity of all solutions which traverse a neighbourhood of the global singularity. Our main results cover a range of different cases with respect to the relative time-scale of the angular dynamics and the parameter drift. We demonstrate the applicability of our results for systems with periodic forcing in the slow equation, in particular for a class of Liénard equations. Finally, we consider a toy model used to study tipping phenomena in climate systems with periodic forcing in the fast equation, which violates the conditions of our main results, in order to demonstrate the applicability of classical (two time-scale) theory for problems of this kind.

Abstract:This paper presents an exploitation model with a stage structure to analyze the dynamics of a fish population, where periodic birth pulse and pulse fishing occur at different fixed time. By utilizing the stroboscopic map, we can obtain an accurate cycle of the system and investigate the stability thresholds. Through the application of the center manifold theorem and bifurcation theory, our research has shown that the given model exhibits transcritical and flip bifurcation near its interior equilibrium point. The bifurcation diagrams, maximum Lyapunov exponents and phase portraits are presented to further substantiate the complexity. Finally, we present high-resolution stability diagrams that demonstrate the global structure of mode-locking oscillations. We also describe how these oscillations are interconnected and how their complexity unfolds as control parameters vary. The two parametric planes illustrate that the structure of Arnold’s tongues is based on the Stern–Brocot tree. This implies that the periodic occurrence of birth pulse and pulse fishing contributes to the development of more complex dynamical behaviors within the fish population.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the investigation of the dynamics of novel 2-DOF coupled oscillators. The system consists of a linear oscillator (main structure) and an attached lightweight nonlinear oscillator, called a nonlinear energy sink (NES), under harmonic forcing in the regime of 1:1:1 resonance. The studied NES has geometrically nonlinear stiffness and damping. Due to the degeneracies that the NES brings to the system, diverse bifurcation structures and rich dynamical phenomena such as nonlinear beating and strongly modulated response occur. The latter two phenomena represent different patterns of energy transfer. To capture the bifurcation structure, the slow flow of the system can be acquired with the use of the complex-averaging method. Furthermore, by applying the bifurcation analysis technique, we get curve boundaries of several bifurcation points in the parameter space. These boundaries will induce different types of folding structures, which can lead to complicated patterns of strongly modulated responses, in which intense energy transfer from the main structure to NES occurs. To study the necessary parameter conditions of strongly modulated responses, we analyzed the dynamics of different time scales of the slow flow in detail and determined the corresponding parameter ranges finally. It is worth noting that the small parameter ε may have a qualitative impact on the dynamics of the system.

Abstract:Recently, a novel mixed-synchronization phenomenon is observed in counter-rotating nonlinear coupled oscillators. In mixed-synchronization state: some variables are synchronized in-phase, while others are out-of-phase. We have experimentally verified the occurrence of mixed-synchronization states in coupled counter-rotating chaotic piecewise Rossler oscillator. Analytical discussion on approximate stability analysis and numerical confirmation on the experimentally observed behavior is also given.

Abstract:The widespread phenomena of multistability is a problem involving rich dynamics to be explored. In this paper, we study the multistability of a generalized nonlinear forcing oscillator excited by $f(x)cos \omega t$. We take Doubochinski's Pendulum as an example. The so-called "amplitude quantization", i.e., the multiple discrete periodical solutions, is identified as self-adaptive subharmonic resonance in response to nonlinear feeding. The subharmonic resonance frequency is found related to the symmetry of the driving force: odd subharmonic resonance occurs under even symmetric driving force and vice versa. We solve the multiple periodical solutions and investigate the transition and competition between these multi-stable modes via frequency response curves and Poincare maps. We find the irreversible transition between the multistable modes and propose a multistability control strategy.

Abstract:We present an analytical description for the collective dynamics of oscillator ensembles with higher-order coupling encoded by simplicial structure, which serves as an illustrative and insightful paradigm for brain function and information storage. The novel dynamics of the system, including abrupt desynchronization and multistability, are rigorously characterized and the critical points that correspond to a continuum of first-order phase transitions are found to satisfy universal scaling properties. More importantly, the underlying bifurcation mechanism giving rise to multiple clusters with arbitrary ensemble size is characterized using a rigorous spectral analysis of the stable cluster states. As a consequence of $SO_2$ group symmetry, we show that the continuum of abrupt desynchronization transitions result from the instability of a collective mode under the nontrivial antisymmetric manifold in the high dimensional phase space.
