Abstract:We investigate the spreading of damage in the three-dimensional Ising model by means of large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations. Within the Glauber dynamics we use different rules for the order in which the sites are updated. We find that the stationary damage values and the spreading temperature are different for different update order. In particular, random update order leads to larger damage and a lower spreading temperature than regular order. Consequently, damage spreading in the Ising model is non-universal not only with respect to different update algorithms (e.g. Glauber vs. heat-bath dynamics) as already known, but even with respect to the order of sites.

Abstract:We introduce a class of damage models on regular lattices with isotropic interactions, as e.g. quasistatic fiber bundles. The system starts intact with a surface-energy threshold required to break any cell sampled from an uncorrelated quenched-disorder distribution. The evolution of this heterogeneous system is ruled by Griffith's principle which states that a cell breaks when the release in elastic energy in the system exceeds the surface-energy barrier necessary to break the cell. By direct integration over all possible realizations of the quenched disorder, we obtain the probability distribution of each damage configuration at any level of the imposed external deformation. We demonstrate an isomorphism between the distributions so obtained and standard generalized Ising models, in which the coupling constants and effective temperature in the Ising model are functions of the nature of the quenched-disorder distribution and the extent of accumulated damage. In particular, we show that damage models with global load sharing are isomorphic to standard percolation theory, that damage models with local load sharing rule are isomorphic to the standard Ising model, and draw consequences thereof for the universality class and behavior of the autocorrelation length of the breakdown transitions corresponding to these models. We also treat damage models having more general power-law interactions, and classify the breakdown process as a function of the power-law interaction exponent. Last, we also show that the probability distribution over configurations is a maximum of Shannon's entropy under some specific constraints related to the energetic balance of the fracture process, which firmly relates this type of quenched-disorder based damage model to standard statistical mechanics.

Abstract:We study damage-spreading in the ferromagnetic Ising model on small world networks using Monte Carlo simulation with Glauber dynamics. The damage spreading temperature $T_d$ is determined as a function of rewiring probability $p$ for small world networks obtained by rewiring the 2D square and 3D cubic lattices. We find that the damage for different values of $p$ collapse onto master curves when plotted against a rescaled temperature and that the distance between $T_d$ and the critical temperature $T_c$ increases with $p$. We argue that when using the Ising model to study social systems, it is necessary to place the spins on a small world network rather than on a regular lattice.

Abstract:An Ising model for damage spreading with a probability of damage healing ($q = 1 - p$) is proposed and studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. In the limit $p \to 1$ the new model is mapped to the standard Ising model. It is found that, for temperatures above the Onsager critical temperature ($T_{C}$), there exist a no trivial finite value of $p$ that sets the critical point ($p_{c}$) for the onset of damage spreading. It is found that $p_{c}$ depends on $T$, defining a critical curve at the border between damage spreading and damage healing. Transitions along such curve are found to belong to the universality class of directed percolation. The phase diagram of the model is also evaluated showing that for large $T$ one has $p_{c} \propto (T- T_{C})^{\alpha}$, with $\alpha = 1$. Within the phase where the damage remains active, the stationary value of the damage depends lineally on both $p - p_{c}$ and $T - T_{C} $.

Study of Damage Propagation at the Interface Localization-Delocalization Transition of the Confined Ising Model

Abstract:The propagation of damage in a confined magnetic Ising film, with short range competing magnetic fields ($h$) acting at opposite walls, is studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Due to the presence of the fields, the film undergoes a wetting transition at a well defined critical temperature $T_w(h)$. In fact, the competing fields causes the occurrence of an interface between magnetic domains of different orientation. For $T < T_w(h)$ ($T > T_w(h)$) such interface is bounded (unbounded) to the walls, while right at $T_w(h)$ the interface is essentially located at the center of the film. It is found that the spatio-temporal spreading of the damage becomes considerably enhanced by the presence of the interface, which act as a ''catalyst'' of the damage causing an enhancement of the total damaged area. The critical points for damage spreading are evaluated by extrapolation to the thermodynamic limit using a finite-size scaling approach. Furthermore, the wetting transition effectively shifts the location of the damage spreading critical points, as compared with the well known critical temperature of the order-disorder transition characteristic of the Ising model. Such a critical points are found to be placed within the non-wet phase.

Reducing defect production in random transverse-field Ising chains by inhomogeneous driving fields

Abstract:In transverse-field Ising models, disorder in the couplings gives rise to a drastic reduction of the critical energy gap and, accordingly, to an unfavorable, slower-than-algebraic scaling of the density of defects produced when the system is driven through its quantum critical point. By applying Kibble-Zurek theory and numerical calculations, we demonstrate in the one-dimensional model that the scaling of defect density with annealing time can be made algebraic by balancing the coupling disorder with suitably chosen inhomogeneous driving fields. Depending on the tail of the coupling distribution at zero, balancing can be either perfect, leading to the well-known inverse-square law of the homogeneous system, or partial, still resulting in an algebraic decrease but with a smaller, non-universal exponent. We also study defect production during an environment-temperature quench of the open variant of the model in which the system is slowly cooled down to its quantum critical point. According to our scaling and numerical results, balanced disorder leads again to an algebraic temporal decrease of the defect density.

Abstract:We study the connection between damage spreading, a phenomenon long discussed in the physics literature, and the coupling of Markov chains, a technique used to bound the mixing time. We discuss in parallel the Edwards-Anderson spin glass model and the hard-disk system, focusing on how coupling provides insights into the region of fast coupling within the paramagnetic and liquid phases. We also work out the connection between path coupling and damage spreading. Numerically, the scaling analysis of the mean coupling time determines a critical point between fast and slow couplings. The exact relationship between fast coupling and disordered phases has not been established rigorously, but we suggest that it will ultimately enhance our understanding of phase behavior in disordered systems.

Abstract:Many studies investigated the application of statistical mechanics to damage phenomena. However, so far the association of damage with statistical mechanics is far from completely developed. One of the most successful approaches maps the strength elements onto the spins of a lattice. This allows applying the formalism extensively developed for spin systems to damage phenomena. To improve the model the interactions of spins at the crack tips are introduced. Further, statistical mechanics of the model is developed for different external boundary constraints.

Damage spreading transition in glasses: a probe for the ruggedness of the configurational landscape

Abstract:We consider damage spreading transitions in the framework of mode-coupling theory. This theory describes relaxation processes in glasses in the mean-field approximation which are known to be characterized by the presence of an exponentially large number of meta-stable states. For systems evolving under identical but arbitrarily correlated noises we demonstrate that there exists a critical temperature $T_0$ which separates two different dynamical regimes depending on whether damage spreads or not in the asymptotic long-time limit. This transition exists for generic noise correlations such that the zero damage solution is stable at high-temperatures being minimal for maximal noise correlations. Although this dynamical transition depends on the type of noise correlations we show that the asymptotic damage has the good properties of an dynamical order parameter such as: 1) Independence on the initial damage; 2) Independence on the class of initial condition and 3) Stability of the transition in the presence of asymmetric interactions which violate detailed balance. For maximally correlated noises we suggest that damage spreading occurs due to the presence of a divergent number of saddle points (as well as meta-stable states) in the thermodynamic limit consequence of the ruggedness of the free energy landscape which characterizes the glassy state. These results are then compared to extensive numerical simulations of a mean-field glass model (the Bernasconi model) with Monte Carlo heat-bath dynamics. The freedom of choosing arbitrary noise correlations for Langevin dynamics makes damage spreading a interesting tool to probe the ruggedness of the configurational landscape.

Abstract:Monte Carlo simulations have been used to study a vortex-free XY ferromagnet with a random field or a random anisotropy on simple cubic lattices. In the random field case, which can be related to a charge-density wave pinned by random point defects, it is found that long-range order is destroyed even for weak randomness. In the random anisotropy case, which can be related to a randomly pinned spin-density wave, the long-range order is not destroyed and the correlation length is finite. In both cases there are many local minima of the free energy separated by high entropy barriers. Our results for the random field case are consistent with the existence of a Bragg glass phase of the type discussed by Emig, Bogner and Nattermann.

Propagation of chaos in the Random field Curie-Weiss model

Abstract:We prove propagation of chaos in the Random field mean-field Ising model, also known ad the Random field Curie-Weiss model. We show that in the paramagnetic phase, i.e.\ in the regime where temperature and distribution of the external field admit a unique minimizer of the expected Helmholtz free energy, propagation of chaos holds. By the latter we mean that the finite-dimensional marginals of the Gibbs measure converge towards a product measure with the correct expectation as the system size goes to infinity. This holds independently of whether the system is in a high-temperature phase or at a phase transition point. If the Helmholtz free energy possesses several minima, there are several possible equilibrium measures. In this case, we show that the system picks one of them at random (depending on the realization of the random external field) and propagation of chaos with respect to a product measure with the same marginals as the one randomly picked holds true. We illustrate our findings in a simple example.

Abstract:We study the ferromagnetic transverse-field Ising model with quenched disorder at T = 0 T = 0 in one and two dimensions by means of stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo simulations using a rigorous zero-temperature scheme. Using a sample-replication method and averaged Binder ratios, we determine the critical shift and width exponents \nu_\mathrm{s} ν s and \nu_\mathrm{w} ν w as well as unbiased critical points by finite-size scaling. Further, scaling of the disorder-averaged magnetisation at the critical point is used to determine the order-parameter critical exponent \beta β and the critical exponent \nu_{\mathrm{av}} ν a v of the average correlation length. The dynamic scaling in the Griffiths phase is investigated by measuring the local susceptibility in the disordered phase and the dynamic exponent z' z ′ is extracted. By applying various finite-size scaling protocols, we provide an extensive and comprehensive comparison between the different approaches on equal footing. The emphasis on effective zero-temperature simulations resolves several inconsistencies in existing literature.

Abstract:In this paper, we relate the coupling of Markov chains, at the basis of perfect sampling methods, with damage spreading, which captures the chaotic nature of stochastic dynamics. For two-dimensional spin glasses and hard spheres we point out that the obstacle to the application of perfect-sampling schemes is posed by damage spreading rather than by the survey problem of the entire configuration space. We find dynamical damage-spreading transitions deeply inside the paramagnetic and liquid phases, and show that critical values of the transition temperatures and densities depend on the coupling scheme. We discuss our findings in the light of a classic proof that for arbitrary Monte Carlo algorithms damage spreading can be avoided through non-Markovian coupling schemes.

Abstract:This paper investigates the spinodal behavior of non-thermal damage phenomena. As an example, a non-thermal fiber-bundle model with the global uniform (meanfield) load sharing is considered. In the vicinity of the spinodal point the power-law scaling behavior is found. For the meanfield fiber-bundle model the spinodal exponents are found to have typical meanfield values.

Phase Transitions in Ising models: the Semi-infinite with decaying field and the Random Field Long-range

Abstract:In this thesis, we present results on phase transition for two models: the semi-infinite Ising model with a decaying field, and the long-range Ising model with a random field. We study the semi-infinite Ising model with an external field $h_i = \lambda |i_d|^{-\delta}$, $\lambda$ is the wall influence, and $\delta>0$. This external field decays as it gets further away from the wall. We are able to show that when $\delta>1$ and $\beta > \beta_c(d)$, there exists a critical value $0< \lambda_c:=\lambda_c(\delta,\beta)$ such that, for $\lambda<\lambda_c$ there is phase transition and for $\lambda>\lambda_c$ we have uniqueness of the Gibbs state. In addition, when $\delta<1$ we have only one Gibbs state for any positive $\beta$ and $\lambda$. For the model with a random field, we extend the recent argument by Ding and Zhuang from nearest-neighbor to long-range interactions and prove the phase transition in the class of ferromagnetic random field Ising models. Our proof combines a generalization of Fröhlich-Spencer contours to the multidimensional setting proposed by Affonso, Bissacot, Endo and Handa, with the coarse-graining procedure introduced by Fisher, Fröhlich, and Spencer. Our result shows that the Ding-Zhuang strategy is also useful for interactions $J_{xy}=|x-y|^{- \alpha}$ when $\alpha > d$ in dimension $d\geq 3$ if we have a suitable system of contours, yielding an alternative proof that does not use the Renormalization Group Method (RGM), since Bricmont and Kupiainen claimed that the RGM should also work on this generality. We can consider i.i.d. random fields with Gaussian or Bernoulli distributions.

Abstract:The technique of damage spreading is used to study the phase diagram of the easy axis anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet on two geometrically frustrated lattices. The triangular and kagome systems are built up from triangular units that either share edges or corners respectively. The triangular lattice undergoes two sequential Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions while the kagome lattice undergoes a glassy transition. In both cases, the phase boundaries obtained using damage spreading are in good agreement with those obtained from equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract:We introduce a model for fractures in quenched disordered media. This model has a deterministic extremal dynamics, driven by the energy function of a network of springs (Born Hamiltonian). The breakdown is the result of the cooperation between the external field and the quenched disorder. This model can be considered as describing the low-temperature limit for crack propagation in solids. To describe the memory effects in this dynamics and then to study the resistance properties of the system we realized some numerical simulations of the model. The model exhibits interesting geometric and dynamical properties, with a strong reduction of the fractal dimension of the clusters and of their backbone, with respect to the case in which thermal fluctuations dominate. This result can be explained by a recently introduced theoretical tool as a screening enhancement due to memory effects induced by the quenched disorder.
