Abstract:This paper presents PLDACOL, our parallel implementation on LDACOL model, to effectively cluster large-scale documents. Since phrases contain more semantic information than the sum of its individual word, we use topic model LDACOL for phrase discovery, and use Gibbs sampling for parameter inference. PLDACOL overcomes the high computation time cost in parameter inference by the distributed computing framework based on Hadoop. We show that our PLDACOL can be applied to the clustering of large-scale documents in different size and produces significant improvements on both effectiveness and efficiency compared with other related traditional algorithms.

Abstract:Game semantics is a denotational semantics presenting compositionally the computational behaviour of various kinds of effectful programs. One of its celebrated achievement is to have obtained full abstraction results for programming languages with a variety of computational effects, in a single framework. This is known as the semantic cube or Abramsky's cube, which for sequential deterministic programs establishes a correspondence between certain conditions on strategies (''innocence'', ''well-bracketing'', ''visibility'') and the absence of matching computational effects. Outside of the sequential deterministic realm, there are still a wealth of game semantics-based full abstraction results; but they no longer fit in a unified canvas. In particular, Ghica and Murawski's fully abstract model for shared state concurrency (IA) does not have a matching notion of pure parallel program-we say that parallelism and interference (i.e. state plus semaphores) are entangled. In this paper we construct a causal version of Ghica and Murawski's model, also fully abstract for IA. We provide compositional conditions parallel innocence and sequentiality, respectively banning interference and parallelism, and leading to four full abstraction results. To our knowledge, this is the first extension of Abramsky's semantic cube programme beyond the sequential deterministic world.

Abstract:We describe an implementation in Carpenter's typed feature formalism, ALE, of a discourse grammar of the kind proposed by Scha, Polanyi, et al. We examine their method for resolving parallelism-dependent anaphora and show that there is a coherent feature-structural rendition of this type of grammar which uses the operations of priority union and generalization. We describe an augmentation of the ALE system to encompass these operations and we show that an appropriate choice of definition for priority union gives the desired multiple output for examples of VP-ellipsis which exhibit a strict/sloppy ambiguity.

Abstract:Long BGO (Bismuth Germanate) and BSO (Bismuth Silicate) crystals coupled with silicon photodiodes have been used to detect minimum-ionizing particles(MIP). With a low noise amplifier customized for this purpose, the crystals can detect MIPs with an excellent signal-to-noise ratio. The NCE(Nuclear Counter Effect} is also clearly observed and measured. Effect of full and partial wrapping of a reflector around the crystal on light collection is also studied.

Abstract:This paper shows that the basic logic induced by the parallel recurrence of Computability Logic is a proper superset of the basic logic induced by the branching recurrence. The latter is known to be precisely captured by the cirquent calculus system CL15, conjectured by Japaridze to remain sound---but not complete---with parallel recurrence instead of branching recurrence. The present result is obtained by positively verifying that conjecture. A secondary result of the paper is showing that parallel recurrence is strictly weaker than branching recurrence in the sense that, while the latter logically implies the former, vice versa does not hold.

Abstract:We review the close relationship between abstract machines for (call-by-name or call-by-value) lambda-calculi (extended with Felleisen's C) and sequent calculus, reintroducing on the way Curien-Herbelin's syntactic kit expressing the duality of computation. We use this kit to provide a term language for a presentation of LK (with conjunction, disjunction, and negation), and to transcribe cut elimination as (non confluent) rewriting. A key slogan here, which may appear here in print for the first time, is that commutative cut elimination rules are explicit substitution propagation rules. We then describe the focalised proof search discipline (in the classical setting), and narrow down the language and the rewriting rules to a confluent calculus (a variant of the second author's focalising system L). We then define a game of patterns and counterpatterns, leading us to a fully focalised finitary syntax for a synthetic presentation of classical logic, that provides a quotient on (focalised) proofs, abstracting out the order of decomposition of negative connectives.

Going Forth and Drawing Back: an Intensional Approach in Nonmonotonic Inference.

Abstract:We decompose a nonmonotonic inference Gamma (sic) alpha into two stages: going forth to deduce all default conclusions in a logic system named DC (short for Default Conclusions), and drawing back less preferable conclusions in the face of conflicting default conclusions, based on a binary "more preferable" relation defined on those subformulas of that are also its deductive consequences. Under the possible-world semantics framework, we construct a set selection function and build up a theory of semantics, as a variant of traditional selection function semantics. We prove that the underlying logic system DC is sound and complete with respect to set selection function semantics. Using this two-layer mechanism, we account for benchmark examples including the Nixon Diamond and the Penguin Principle.

Abstract:Cross-linguistic studies on co-production of syntactic units and compound sentence formats have found that the location of predicates affects the projectability of the language, in that languages like English allow early projections while languages like Japanese later projections. In Mandarin Chinese, we found that syntactic parallelism often occurs before co-constructions, impacting the projectability of syntactic structures in one way or another. Based on the theories of dialogic syntax (Du Bois 2007, 2014) and the principles of interactional linguistics, this study explores the relationship between syntactic parallelism and co-production of syntactic structures across turns. The co-production of four syntactic and sentential structures were closely examined, namely, Copula V + Complement, (be) Adjectival Predicate, the conditional IF X THEN Y construction ((Sic) ruguo (Sic) jiu/hui..), and compound sentences with to-clause of purpose. Also observed is the emergent new sequence as interactionally relevant syntax. Upon inspection, we found that turn units with parallel syntactic structures may help narrow down the category of the projected final component, thus inspiring the second speaker to come in early and jointly complete the syntax-in-progress. Apart from co-producing syntax-in-progress, co-produced structures can also develop into interactionally relevant sequences with independent internal structures, thereby executing new social actions.

Abstract:Multi-threaded programs have traditionally fallen into one of two domains: cooperative and competitive. These two domains have traditionally remained mostly disjoint, with cooperative threading used for increasing throughput in compute-intensive applications such as scientific workloads and cooperative threading used for increasing responsiveness in interactive applications such as GUIs and games. As multicore hardware becomes increasingly mainstream, there is a need for bridging these two disjoint worlds, because many applications mix interaction and computation and would benefit from both cooperative and competitive threading. In this paper, we present techniques for programming and reasoning about parallel interactive applications that can use both cooperative and competitive threading. Our techniques enable the programmer to write rich parallel interactive programs by creating and synchronizing with threads as needed, and by assigning threads user-defined and partially ordered priorities. To ensure important responsiveness properties, we present a modal type system analogous to S4 modal logic that precludes low-priority threads from delaying high-priority threads, thereby statically preventing a crucial set of priority-inversion bugs. We then present a cost model that allows reasoning about responsiveness and completion time of well-typed programs. The cost model extends the traditional work-span model for cooperative threading to account for competitive scheduling decisions needed to ensure responsiveness. Finally, we show that our proposed techniques are realistic by implementing them as an extension to the Standard ML language.

Abstract:Beginning with Halliday Hasan's theory on discourse reference, this paper firstly points out the limitations of static analysis on discourse reference. Then it employs the knowledge of discourse world and mental representation to make a new analysis of discourse and concludes that the nature of reference is reference items' co-reference of the discourse entity in the discourse world; or the referential relationship between these reference items via the reference in the reader's mental representation. Last the paper illustrates the working mechanism of discourse reference in discourse comprehension.

Abstract:Bech’s seminal distinction between coherent and incoherent constructions in German does not allow for those structures that display the traits of both coherence and incoherence simultaneously, e.g. the third construction. Hence his original two-way distinction has given way to a three-way distinction. This paper proposes that a threeway division is indeed more accurate. The approach presented here distinguishes between coherent, incoherent, and pseudoincoherent constituents. Nine diagnostics are utilized to support this three-way division, i.e. extraposition, intraposition, bare infinitive fronting, infinitival fronting, scrambling, pied-piping, position of negation, scope of negation, and gapping. The analysis is couched in a dependency grammar framework and formalized in terms of the two features ±s (scrambling) and ±p (predicate). Three principles of word order are formulated in terms of these features: the Scrambling Principle, the Predicate Serialization Principle, and the Predicate Weight Principle. An introduction to dependency grammar is provided.

Abstract:The problems involved in developing efficient parallel programs have proved harder than those in developing efficient sequential ones, both for programmers and for compilers. Although program calculation has been found to be a promising way to solve these problems in the sequential world, we believe that it needs much more effort to study its effective use in the parallel world. In this paper, we propose a calculational framework for the derivation of efficient parallel programs with two main innovations:. -We propose a novel inductive synthesis lemma based on which an elementary but powerful parallelization theorem is developed. -We make the first attempt to construct a calculational algorithm for parallelization, deriving associative operators from data type definition and making full use of existing fusion and tupling calculations.Being more constructive, our method is not only helpful in the design of efficient parallel programs in general but also promising in the construction of parallelizing compiler. Several interesting examples are used for illustration.

This is achieved by partially overcoming the following conceptual challenges that are never present in classical parallel programming: (i) the intertwining of nondeterminism caused by quantum measurements and introduced by parallelism; (ii) entanglement between component quantum programs; and (iii) combining quantum predicates in the overlap of state Hilbert spaces of component quantum programs with shared variables. It seems that a full solution to these challenges and developing a (relatively) complete proof system for parallel quantum programs are still far beyond the current reach.

Abstract:A syntax-directed formal system for the development of totally correct programs with respect to an unfair shared-state parallel while-language is proposed. The system can be understood as a compositional reformulation of the Owicki/Gries method for verification of parallel programs. Auxiliary variables are used both as a specification tool to eliminate undesirable implementations, and as a verification tool to make it possible to prove that an already finished program satisfies a particular specification. Auxiliary variables may be of any sort, and it is up to the user to define the auxiliary structure he prefers. Moreover, the auxiliary structure is only a part of the logic. This means that auxiliary variables do not have to be implemented as if they were ordinary programming variables. The system is proved sound and relatively complete with respect to an operational semantics and employed to develop three nontrivial algorithms: the Dining-Philosophers, the Bubble-Lattice-Sort and the Set-Partition algorithms. Finally, a related method for the development of (possibly nonterminating) programs with respect to four properties is described. This approach is then used to develop Dekker's algorithm.

Abstract:Compositionality has been a central concept in linguistics and philosophy for decades, and it is increasingly prominent in many other areas of cognitive science. Its status, however, remains contentious. Here, I reassess the nature and scope of the principle of compositionality (Partee, 1995) from the perspective of psycholinguistics and cognitive neuroscience. First, I review classic arguments for compositionality and conclude that they fail to establish compositionality as a property of human language. Next, I state a new competence argument, acknowledging the fact that any competent user of a language L can assign to most expressions in L at least one meaning which is a function only of the meanings of the expression's parts and of its syntactic structure. I then discuss selected results from cognitive neuroscience, indicating that the human brain possesses the processing capacities presupposed by the competence argument. Finally, I outline a language processing architecture consistent with the neuroscience results, where semantic representations may be generated by a syntax-driven stream and by an "asyntactic" processing stream, jointly or independently. Compositionality is viewed as a constraint on computation in the former stream only.

Abstract:Concurrent computations resemble conversations. In a conversation, participants direct utterances at others and, as the conversation evolves, exploit the known common context to advance the conversation. Similarly, collaborating software components share knowledge with each other in order to make progress as a group towards a common goal. This dissertation studies concurrency from the perspective of cooperative knowledge-sharing, taking the conversational exchange of knowledge as a central concern in the design of concurrent programming languages. In doing so, it makes five contributions: 1. It develops the idea of a common dataspace as a medium for knowledge exchange among concurrent components, enabling a new approach to concurrent programming. While dataspaces loosely resemble both "fact spaces" from the world of Linda-style languages and Erlang's collaborative model, they significantly differ in many details. 2. It offers the first crisp formulation of cooperative, conversational knowledge-exchange as a mathematical model. 3. It describes two faithful implementations of the model for two quite different languages. 4. It proposes a completely novel suite of linguistic constructs for organizing the internal structure of individual actors in a conversational setting. The combination of dataspaces with these constructs is dubbed Syndicate. 5. It presents and analyzes evidence suggesting that the proposed techniques and constructs combine to simplify concurrent programming. The dataspace concept stands alone in its focus on representation and manipulation of conversational frames and conversational state and in its integral use of explicit epistemic knowledge. The design is particularly suited to integration of general-purpose I/O with otherwise-functional languages, but also applies to actor-like settings more generally.

Theory and Practice of Logic Programming

Abstract:Abstract Multi-core and highly connected architectures have become ubiquitous, and this has brought renewed interest in language-based approaches to the exploitation of parallelism. Since its inception, logic programming has been recognized as a programming paradigm with great potential for automated exploitation of parallelism. The comprehensive survey of the first twenty years of research in parallel logic programming, published in 2001, has served since as a fundamental reference to researchers and developers. The contents are quite valid today, but at the same time the field has continued evolving at a fast pace in the years that have followed. Many of these achievements and ongoing research have been driven by the rapid pace of technological innovation, that has led to advances such as very large clusters, the wide diffusion of multi-core processors, the game-changing role of general-purpose graphic processing units, and the ubiquitous adoption of cloud computing. This has been paralleled by significant advances within logic programming, such as tabling, more powerful static analysis and verification, the rapid growth of Answer Set Programming, and in general, more mature implementations and systems. This survey provides a review of the research in parallel logic programming covering the period since 2001, thus providing a natural continuation of the previous survey. In order to keep the survey self-contained, it restricts its attention to parallelization of the major logic programming languages (Prolog, Datalog, Answer Set Programming) and with an emphasis on automated parallelization and preservation of the sequential observable semantics of such languages. The goal of the survey is to serve not only as a reference for researchers and developers of logic programming systems but also as engaging reading for anyone interested in logic and as a useful source for researchers in parallel systems outside logic programming.
