Abstract:In the context of simple models, it is shown that demanding finiteness for physical masses with respect to a longitudinal cutoff, can be used to fix the ambiguity in the renormalization of fermions masses in the Hamiltonian light-front formulation. Difficulties that arise in applications of finiteness conditions to discrete light-cone quantization are discussed.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to determine the renormalization parameters of fermion mass through finiteness conditions in the Light - Front (LF) representation, especially the kinetic mass counter - term. In the LF representation, due to the loss of symmetries, such as the non - obviousness of parity and full rotational invariance, there are more free parameters in the LF Hamiltonian. These problems are particularly prominent when dealing with Discrete Light - Cone Quantization (DLCQ).
Specifically, the paper explores the following points:
1. **Necessity of kinetic mass counter - term**: In the continuous case, in order to make the small \(p^{+}\) integral in higher - order diagrams converge, in addition to self - induced inertias, a kinetic mass counter - term needs to be added. This additional parameter can be determined by requiring the finiteness of the \(p^{+}\) integral.
2. **Application of finiteness conditions**: The significance of finiteness conditions is that the small \(p^{+}\) divergence is an artificial phenomenon in the LF method. The kinetic mass counter - term determined by this condition is the same as the parameter determined by requiring the parity invariance of physical observables.
3. **Application in non - perturbative calculations**: In non - perturbative calculations, if the kinetic mass is not properly selected, the physical mass will become imaginary (i.e., tachyonic behavior). Therefore, by studying the dependence of the physical mass on the longitudinal cutoff, the correct value of the kinetic mass can be accurately located.
4. **Challenges in DLCQ**: In DLCQ, the discretization of momentum space causes the self - energy correction to be related to momentum, which makes the selection of the kinetic mass counter - term more complicated. The paper shows this problem through specific numerical calculations and proposes some possible solutions, such as introducing Pauli - Villars regulators or truncating the invariant energy transfer.
In summary, this paper aims to solve the problem of fermion mass renormalization in the LF representation through finiteness conditions, especially the difficulties encountered in dealing with DLCQ. These methods are not only helpful for theoretical understanding but also provide important guidance for practical calculations.
