Abstract:The ground entanglement and thermal entanglement in quantum mixed spin chains consisting of two integer spins 1 and two half integer spins 1/2 arrayed as ${1/2}-{1/2}-1-1$ in a unit cell with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor couplings $J_1$($J_2$) between the spins of equal (different) magnitudes, are investigated by adopting the log-negativity. The ground entanglement transition found here is closely related with the valence bond state transition, and the thermal entanglement near the critical point is calculated and shown that two distinct behaviors exist in the nearest neighbor same kind of spins and different kind of spins, respectively. The potential application of our results on the quantum information processing is also discussed.
Valence bond distribution and correlation in bipartite Heisenberg antiferromagnets

Abstract:Every singlet state of a quantum spin 1/2 system can be decomposed into a linear combination of valence bond basis states. The range of valence bonds within this linear combination as well as the correlations between them can reveal the nature of the singlet state, and are key ingredients in variational calculations. In this work, we study the bipartite valence bond distributions and their correlations within the ground state of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on bipartite lattices. In terms of field theory, this problem can be mapped to correlation functions near a boundary. In dimension d >= 2, a non-linear sigma model analysis reveals that at long distances the probability distribution P(r) of valence bond lengths decays as |r|^(-d-1) and that valence bonds are uncorrelated. By a bosonization analysis, we also obtain P(r) proportional to |r|^(-d-1) in d=1 despite the different mechanism. On the other hand, we find that correlations between valence bonds are important even at large distances in d=1, in stark contrast to d >= 2. The analytical results are confirmed by high-precision quantum Monte Carlo simulations in d=1, 2, and 3. We develop a single-projection loop variant of the valence bond projection algorithm, which is well-designed to compute valence bond probabilities and for which we provide algorithmic details.

Abstract:We study quantum mixed-spin chains consisting of two integer spins S-1 and two half integer spins S-2 arrayed as S-1-S-1-S-2-S-2 in a unit cell with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor couplings J(1) (J(2)) between the spins of equal (different) magnitudes. By varying the ratio of two competing couplings, alpha=J(2)/J(1), the systems undergo successive quantum phase transitions between different valence-bond-solid (VBS) states accompanied by the vanishing of the energy gap. By a quantum Monte Carlo simulation with an improved loop cluster algorithm, we find one critical point alpha(c)=0.762(1) in a 1-1-1/2-1/2 chain and two critical points alpha(c1)=0.479(1) and alpha(c2)=1.318(1) in a 1-1-3/2-3/2 chain, respectively. The calculated expectation values of the Lieb-Shultz-Mattis twist operator show the characteristic features of the single VBS transition in the 1-1-1/2-1/2 chain and two successive VBS transitions in the 1-1-3/2-3/2 chain at these critical points.

Abstract:We study quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg ferromagnetic chains with dilute random antiferromagnetic impurity bonds with the modified spin-wave theory. By describing thermal excitations in the language of spin waves, we observe a low-temperature Curie susceptibility due to the formation of large spin clusters first predicted by the real-space renormalization-group approach, as well as a crossover to a pure ferromagnetic spin-chain behavior at intermediate and high temperatures. We compare our results of the modified spin-wave theory to quantum Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract:The spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ delta-chain (sawtooth chain) with antiferromagnetic Heisenberg basal chain and Ising apical-basal interactions is studied. The basal-apical interactions involve the bond alternation. The limiting cases of the model include the symmetrical delta-chain and the antiferromagnetic chain in the staggered magnetic field. We study ground state properties of the model by the exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods. The ground state phase diagram as a function of the bond alternation consists of magnetic and various non-magnetic phases. All phases excluding the ferrimagnetic phase are gapped and an origin of the gaps is cleared.

Abstract:The quantum spin chain with bond-directional interactions can host fascinating phenomena. Here, the authors study such a spin chain, built of a Kitaev interaction and an off-diagonal exchange (dubbed the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ term). This model possesses a self-dual relation and a mirror symmetry, and is found to exhibit a multicritical point, two topological phase transitions of distinct universality classes, three magnetically ordered states, and four disordered phases including the preeminent Haldane phase. These findings demonstrate a fertile playground to study quantum magnetism and topological phase transitions.

Abstract:The Heisenberg chain with antiferromagnetic, powerlaw exchange has a quantum phase transition separating spin liquid and Neel ordered phases at a critical value of the powerlaw exponent alpha. The behaviour of the system can be explained rather simply in terms of a resonating valence bond state in which the amplitude for a bond of length r goes as r^{-alpha} for alpha < 1, as r^{-(1+alpha)/2} for 1 < alpha < 3, and as r^{-2} for alpha > 3. Numerical evaluation of the staggered magnetic moment and Binder cumulant reveals a second order transition at alpha_c = 2.18(5), in excellent agreement with quantum Monte Carlo. The divergence of the magnetic correlation length is consistent with an exponent nu = 2/(3-alpha_c) = 2.4(2).

Valence bond solids for SU(n) spin chains: exact models, spinon confinement, and the Haldane gap

Abstract:To begin with, we introduce several exact models for SU(3) spin chains: (1) a translationally invariant parent Hamiltonian involving four-site interactions for the trimer chain, with a three-fold degenerate ground state. We provide numerical evidence that the elementary excitations of this model transform under representation 3bar of SU(3) if the original spins of the model transform under rep. 3. (2) a family of parent Hamiltonians for valence bond solids of SU(3) chains with spin reps. 6, 10, and 8 on each lattice site. We argue that of these three models, only the latter two exhibit spinon confinement and hence a Haldane gap in the excitation spectrum. We generalize some of our models to SU(n). Finally, we use the emerging rules for the construction of VBS states to argue that models of antiferromagnetic chains of SU(n) spins in general possess a Haldane gap if the spins transform under a representation corresponding to a Young tableau consisting of a number of boxes \lambda which is divisible by n. If \lambda and n have no common divisor, the spin chain will support deconfined spinons and not exhibit a Haldane gap. If \lambda and n have a common divisor different from n, it will depend on the specifics of the model including the range of the interaction.

Bath-engineering magnetic order in quantum spin chains: An analytic mapping approach

Abstract:Dissipative processes can drive different magnetic orders in quantum spin chains. Using a non-perturbative analytic mapping framework, we systematically show how to structure different magnetic orders in spin systems by controlling the locality of the attached baths. Our mapping approach reveals analytically the impact of spin-bath couplings, leading to the suppression of spin splittings, bath-dressing and mixing of spin-spin interactions, and emergence of non-local ferromagnetic interactions between spins coupled to the same bath, which become long-ranged for a global bath. Our general mapping method can be readily applied to a variety of spin models: We demonstrate (i) a bath-induced transition from antiferromangnetic (AFM) to ferromagnetic ordering in a Heisenberg spin chain, (ii) AFM to extended Neel phase ordering within a transverse-field Ising chain with pairwise couplings to baths, and (iii) a quantum phase transition in the fully-connected Ising model. Our method is non-perturbative in the system-bath coupling. It holds for a variety of non-Markovian baths and it can be readily applied towards studying bath-engineered phases in frustrated or topological materials.

Abstract:We present a spin- antiferromagnetic Reisenberg model in an interacting boson representation exactly by using modified Holstein–Primakoff transformation. For interacting boson systems on one-dimensional linear chains and square lattices, we perform Monte–Carlo calculations using the well-established Jastrow-type trial wavefunction. We find that the ground state energies and spin correlations agree well with other numerical and theoretical results.

Abstract:Although it is well accepted that the spin-1/2 triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet (TLHAF) has a long-range ordered ground state, a thorough understanding of its spin dynamics is still missing. While the linear spin wave theory (LSWT) predicts three branches of magnon mode in the magnetic Brillouin zone (MBZ), the 1/S expansion at the next order is found to break down in a large portion of the MBZ centered around the M point, leaving the fate of the magnon modes there undecided. Recent neutron scattering measurement on Ba3CoSb2O9, an ideal realization of the spin-1/2 TLHAF, provides a surprising answer to this issue. Two, rather than three branches, of magnon mode are observed around the M point, whose dispersion is strongly renormalized with respect to the LSWT prediction and exhibit pronounced rotonlike minimum at the M point. This is accompanied by a strong spin fluctuation continuum at higher energy, inside which two strong and broad spectral peaks of unknown origin are observed. In this work, we propose a simple picture for these spectral anomalies by invoking the resonating valence bond (RVB) physics in the description of the ground state of the system. We find that the rotonlike minimum in the magnon dispersion can be explained by the coupling between the collective spin fluctuation and the continuum of Dirac spinon excitation moving in a π-flux background. We also propose that the two broad peaks in the continuum can be understood respectively as the Landau damped third magnon mode and the Landau damped longitudinal mode. Such a picture can be verified by studying the polarization character of the various spectral features.

Abstract:Using the density matrix renormalization group and a bosonization approach, we study a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with near-neighbor coupling $J_1$ and frustrating second-neighbor coupling $J_2$, particularly in the limit $J_2 >> J_1$. This system exhibits both dimerization and incommensurate spiral spin correlations. We argue that this system is closely related to a doped, spin-gapped phase of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice.

Abstract:Fermionic valence-bond approach in terms of SU(4) representation is proposed to describe the J(1)-J(2) frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (AF) model on a bipartite square lattice. A uniform mean field solution without breaking the translational and rotational symmetries describes a valence-bond spin-liquid state, interpolating the two different AF ordered states in the large J(1) and large J(2) limits, respectively. This novel spin-liquid state is gapless with the vanishing density of states at the Fermi nodal points. Moreover, a sharp resonance peak in the dynamic structure factor is predicted for momenta q=(0,0) and (pi,pi) in the strongly frustrated limit J(2)/J(1)similar to1/2, which can be checked by neutron scattering experiments.

Abstract:We present a large-N variational approach to describe the magnetism of insulating doped semiconductors based on a disorder-generalization of the resonating-valence-bond theory for quantum antiferromagnets. This method captures all the qualitative and even quantitative predictions of the strong-disorder renormalization group approach over the entire experimentally relevant temperature range. Finally, by mapping the problem on a hard-sphere fluid, we could provide an essentially exact analytic solution without any adjustable parameters.

Abstract:Submitted for the MAR13 Meeting of The American Physical Society Characterizing boson density wave and valence bond orders in a lattice by its dual vortex degree of freedoms YAN CHEN, Fudan University, China, JINWU YE, Mississippi State University — A duality transformation in quantum field theory is usually established first through partition functions. It is always important to explore the dual relations between various correlation functions in the transformation. Here, we explore such a dual relation to study quantum phases and phase transitions in an extended boson Hubbard model at 1/3 (2/3) filling on a triangular lattice. We develop systematically a simple and effective way to use the vortex degree of freedoms on dual lattices to characterize both the density wave and valence bond symmetry breaking patterns of the boson insulating states in the direct lattices. In addition to a checkerboard charge density wave (X-CDW) and a stripe CDW, we find a novel CDW-VBS phase which has both local CDW and local valence bond solid (VBS) orders. Implications on QMC simulations are addressed. The possible experimental realizations of cold atoms loaded on optical lattices are discussed. Abstract:Bosonic and fermionic Hubbard models on the checkerboard lattice are studied numerically for infinite on-site repulsion. At particle density n=1/4 and strong nearest-neighbor repulsion, insulating Valence Bond Crystals (VBC) of resonating particle pairs are stabilized. Their melting into superfluid/metallic phases under increasing hopping is investigated at T=0K. More specifically, we identify a novel and unconventional commensurate VBC supersolid region, precursor to the melting of the bosonic crystal. Hardcore bosons (spins) are compared to fermions (electrons), as well as positive to negative (frustrating) hoppings.

Abstract:We propose a trajectory-based method for simulating nonadiabatic dynamics in molecular systems with two coupled electronic states. Employing a quantum-mechanically exact mapping of the two-level problem to a spin-<span class="equationTd inline-formula"><math>12</math></span> coherent state, we use the Stratonovich-Weyl transform to construct a classical phase space of a spin vector constrained to a spherical surface whose radius is consistent with the quantum magnitude of the spin. In contrast with the singly excited harmonic oscillator basis used in Meyer-Miller-Stock-Thoss (MMST) mapping, the theory requires no additional projection operators onto the space of physical states. When treated under a quasiclassical approximation, we show that the resulting dynamics are equivalent to those generated by the MMST Hamiltonian. What differs is the value of the zero-point energy parameter as well as the initial distribution and the measurement operators used in constructing correlation functions. For various spin-boson models, the results of the method are seen to be a significant improvement compared to both standard Ehrenfest dynamics and linearized semiclassical MMST mapping, without adding any computational complexity.
Order Parameter to Characterize Valence-Bond-Solid States in Quantum Spin Chains

Abstract:We propose an order parameter to characterize valence-bond-solid (VBS) states in quantum spin chains, given by the ground-state expectation value of a unitary operator appearing in the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis argument. We show that the order parameter changes the sign according to the number of valence bonds (broken valence bonds) at the boundary for periodic (open) systems. This allows us to determine the phase transition point in between different VBS states. We demonstrate this theory in the successive dimerization transitions of the bond-alternating Heisenberg chains, using the quantum Monte Carlo method.
