Abstract:The mass generation in the (3+1)-dimensional supersymmetric Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in a constant magnetic field is studied. It is shown that the external magnetic field catalyzes chiral symmetry breaking.

Abstract:We study a lattice Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with interacting staggered fermions in the Kogut-Susskind Hamiltonian formalism. The model has a discrete chiral symmetry but not the usual continuous chiral symmetry. In a strong coupling regime for the four-fermion interaction, we prove that the mass of the fermions is spontaneously generated at sufficiently low non-zero temperatures in the dimensions $\nu \ge 3$ of the model and zero temperature in $\nu \ge 2$. Due to the phase transition, the discrete chiral symmetry of the model is broken. Our analysis is based on the reflection positivity for fermions and the method of the infrared bound.

Abstract:The Eigenstate Method has been developed to deduce the fermion propagator with a constant external magnetic field. In general, we find its result is equivalent to other methods and this new method is more convenient, especially when one evaluates the contribution from the infinitesimal imaginary term of the fermion propagator. Using the Eigenstate Method we try to discuss whether the infinitesimal imaginary frequency of the fermion propagator in a strong magnetic field and Lorentz-violating extension of the minimal SU(3)×SU(2)×SU(1) Standard Model could have a significant influence on the dynamical mass. When the imaginary term of the fermion propagator in this model is not trivial , this model gives a correction to the dynamical mass. When one does not consider the influence from the imaginary term , there is another correction from the conventional term. Under both circumstances, chiral symmetry is broken.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking by employing a two-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with constant external magnetic field. After changing the coupling strength of the NJL model, we found that the Wigner-Weyl solution and Nambu-Goldstone solution of the gap equation could coexist. Even though the gap equation only has Nambu-Goldstone solution at zero temperature, the Wigner-Weyl solution may appear when magnetic field strength and temperature are nonzero. For the Nambu-Goldstone solution, magnetic field and temperature have opposite impact on the chiral dynamical mass. In the chiral limit, the magnetic field dependence of chiral dynamical mass reveals the existence of inverse magnetic catalysis for the Wigner-Weyl solution. However, the two phases have different responses to the magnetic field and temperature in the chiral limit but the same beyond chiral limit. Furthermore, the order of the transition from the Nambu-Goldstone phase to Wigner-Weyl phase depends on the choice of model parameters. We have also calculated the susceptibilities of dynamical mass with respect to the temperature.

Abstract:It is known that a constant magnetic field is a strong catalyst of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in 2 + 1 dimensions, leading to generating dynamical fermion mass even at weakest attraction. In this work we investigate the collective modes associated with the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in a constant magnetic field in the (2 + 1)-dimensional Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with continuous U(1) chiral symmetry. We introduce a self-consistent scheme to evaluate the propagators of the collective modes at the leading order in 1/N. The contributions from the vacuum and from the magnetic field are separated such that we can employ the well-established regularization scheme for the case of vanishing magnetic field. The same scheme can be applied to the study of the next-to-leading order correction in 1/N. We show that the sigma mode is always a lightly bound state with its mass being twice the dynamical fermion mass for arbitrary strength of the magnetic field. Since the dynamics of the collective modes is always 2 + 1 dimensional, the finite temperature transition should be of the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) type. We determine the KT transition temperature T-KT as well as the mass melting temperature T* as a function of the magnetic field. It is found that the pseudogap domain T-KT < T < T* is enlarged with increasing strength of the magnetic field. The influence of a chiral imbalance or axial chemical potential mu(5) is also studied. We find that even a constant axial chemical potential mu(5) can lead to inverse magnetic catalysis of the KT transition temperature in 2 + 1 dimensions. The inverse magnetic catalysis behavior is actually the de Haas-van Alphen oscillation induced by the interplay between the magnetic field and the Fermi surface.

Abstract:In this paper we develop a new method that is different from Schwinger proper time method to deduce the fermion propagator with a constant external magnetic field. In the NJL model, we use this method to find out the gap equation at zero and non-zero temperature, and give the numerical results and phase diagram between magnetic field and temperature. Beside these, we also introduce current mass to study the susceptibilities, because there is a new parameter (the strength of external magnetic field) in this problem, corresponding this new parameter, we have defined a new susceptibility $\chi_B$ to compare with the other two susceptibilities $\chi_c$ (chiral susceptibility) and $\chi_T$ (thermal susceptibility), and all of the three susceptibilities show than when current mass is not zero, the phase transition is a crossover, while for comparison, in the chiral limit, the susceptibilities show a second order phase transition. At last, we give out the critical coefficients of different susceptibilities in the chiral limit.

Abstract:It is known that a classical SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in 3+1 dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime can provide a holographic dual to a 2+1 dimensional time reversal symmetry breaking superconductor with a pseudogap. We study the properties of this holographic superconductor in the presence of an applied constant external magnetic field, neglecting backreaction on the geometry. The superconductor is immersed into a constant external magnetic field by adding a radially (the extra dimension) dependent magnetic field to the black hole. As for real superconductors, there is a critical magnetic field above which no superconductivity can appear. The continuity of the first derivative of the free energy difference between the superconducting phase and the normal phase at the critical temperature suggests that the superconducting phase transition with applied magnetic field is of second order.

Abstract:We study inverse magnetic catalysis in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model beyond mean field approximation. The feed-down from mesons to quarks is embedded in an effective coupling constant at finite temperature and magnetic field. While the magnetic catalysis is still the dominant effect at low temperature, the meson dressed quark mass drops down with increasing magnetic field at high temperature due to the dimension reduction of the Goldstone mode in the Pauli-Villars regularization scheme.

Abstract:In modern physics, spontaneous symmetry breaking is one of the most important and ubiquitous ideas. It is well known that the breakdown of global and continuous symmetry gives rise to gapless excitations called Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons. This is called NG theorem. Since the generators of broken symmetries are bosonic, the excitations are also bosons. On the other hand, excitations are thought of as fermionic when a generator of broken symmetry is fermionic. The most famous example of fermionic symmetry is supersymmetry (SUSY). SUSY is a symmetry that exchanges bosons and fermions. In high-energy physics, it is known that spontaneous SUSY breaking gives rise to massless modes called NG fermions or Nambu- Goldstinos. In non-relativistic systems, fewer examples of models with SUSY are studied. Therefore, spontaneous SUSY breaking in non-relativistic systems is less understood than that in nonrelativistic systems or spontaneous symmetry breaking. In this thesis, we introduce interacting Majorana models with supersymmetry (SUSY) and discuss the properties in terms of spontaneous SUSY breaking and NG modes.

Gluino mass from dynamical supersymmetry breaking

Abstract:We present a new mechanism for gluino mass generation in models of dynamical supersymmetry breaking. The mechanism requires two colored chiral superfields which feel a nonabelian gauge interaction such that a fermion condensate is formed at a scale of order 1 TeV. Renormalizable hidden sector models, which typically yield unacceptably light gauginos, become viable if a gauge singlet is coupled to these chiral superfields. Moreover, the interactions of the gauge singlet with the Higgs superfields substitute the $\mu$-term. Visible sector models can also incorporate this mechanism; however, the models of dynamical supersymmetry breaking previously analyzed cannot be fitted in a simple visible sector model because they lead to vacuum expectation values for charged scalars.

Abstract:We explore the features of the UA(1) and chiral symmetry breaking of the Nambu–Jona-Lasinio model without the Kobayashi–Maskawa–'t Hooft determinant term in the presence of a parallel electromagnetic field. We show that the electromagnetic chiral anomaly can induce both finite neutral pion condensate and isospin-singlet pseudo-scalar η condensate and thus modifies the chiral symmetry breaking pattern. In order to characterize the strength of the UA(1) symmetry breaking, we evaluate the susceptibility associated with the UA(1) charge. The result shows that the susceptibility contributed from the chiral anomaly is consistent with the behavior of the corresponding η condensate. The spectra of the mesonic excitations are also studied.

Abstract:We study the mass spectra and decay process of $\sigma$ and $\pi_0$ mesons under strong external magnetic field. For this purpose, we deduce the thermodynamic potential in a two-flavor, hot and magnetized Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. We calculate the energy gap equation through the random phase approximation(RPA). Then we use Ritus method to calculate the decay triangle diagram and self-energy in the presence of a constant magnetic field B. Our results indicate that the magnetic field has little influence on the mass of $\pi_0$ at low temperatures. While for quarks and $\sigma$ mesons, their mass changes obviously, which reflects the influence of magnetic catalysis(MC). The presence of magnetic field accelerates the decay of the meson while the presence of chemical potential will decrease the decay process.

Abstract:We study the dynamical generation of masses for fundamental fermions in quenched quantum electrodynamics in the presence of weak magnetic fields using Schwinger-Dyson equations. Contrary to the case where the magnetic field is strong, in the weak field limit the coupling should exceed certain critical value in order for the generation of masses to take place, just as in the case where no magnetic field is present. The weak field limit is defined as eB≪m(0)2, where m(0) is the value of the dynamically generated mass in the absence of the field. We carry out a numerical analysis to study the magnetic field dependence of the mass function above critical coupling and show that in this regime the dynamically generated mass and the chiral condensate for the lowest Landau level increase proportionally to (eB)2.

Abstract:In this work, I'm going to explore the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking and restoration in a solvable magnetic distribution within Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The special semi-localized static magnetic field can roughly simulate the realistic situation in peripheral heavy ion collisions, thus the study is important for the dynamical evolution of quark matter. I find that the magnetic field dependent contribution from discrete spectra usually dominates over that from continuum ones and chiral symmetry breaking is locally catalyzed by both the magnitude and scale of the magnetic field.

Abstract:We study the generation of fermion mass in a context where interactions break a discrete chiral symmetry. Then, fermion mass is not protected by a symmetry, no symmetry is broken by the generation of mass, and a vanishing mass no longer enhances a symmetry. We elaborate these scenarios for template fermionic and Yukawa theories in three dimensions where mass can be generated either by fluctuations, strong dynamics, or the vacuum expectation value of a scalar field. We find that fluctuation-induced contributions to fermion mass are parametrically suppressed in the number of fermion flavors N . The generation of fermion mass then takes the form of a rapid crossover which turns into a second order quantum phase transition for large N , much like in settings with fundamental chiral symmetry. We further discuss theories where fermion mass can be generated spontaneously without breaking any symmetry other than scale symmetry. Abstract:We explore the effects of an applied strong external magnetic field in a three flavor massless color superconductor. The long-range component of the B field that penetrates the superconductor enhances some quark condensates, leading to a different condensation pattern. The external field also reduces the flavor symmetries in the system, and thus it changes drastically the corresponding low energy physics. Our considerations are relevant for the study of highly magnetized compact stars.

Abstract:The phase structure of flavoured N=2 SYM on a three sphere in an external magnetic field is studied. The pairing effect of the magnetic field competes with the dissociating effect of the Casimir free energy, leading to an interesting phase structure of confined and deconfined phases separated by a critical curve of a first order quantum phase transition. At vanishing magnetic field the phase transition is of a third order. For sufficiently strong magnetic field, the only stable phase is the confined phase and magnetic catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking is realized. The meson spectra of the theory exhibit Zeeman splitting and level crossing and feature a finite jump at the phase transition between the confined and deconfined phases. At strong magnetic field the ground state has a massless mode corresponding to the Goldstone boson associated with the spontaneously broken U(1) R-symmetry analogous to the eta' meson in QCD.

Fermion Self-energy and Pseudovector Condensate in NJL Model with External Magnetic Field

Abstract:In this paper, we aim to study the complete self-energy in the fermion propagator within two-flavor NJL model in the case of finite temperature, chemical potential and external magnetic field. Through Fierz transformation we prove that the self-energy is not simply proportional to dynamical mass in the presence of chemical potential, moreover, it contains four kinds of condensates after introducing external magnetic field. We find out the appropriate and complete form of self-energy and establish new gap equations. We take two of the four condensates (scalar and pseudovector condensates) to make an approximation and simplify the gap equations. The numerical results show that not only the dynamical mass get quantitative modification, but also the properties of Nambu phase and Wigner phase are significantly different with classic results. Instead of classic Wigner phase with zero dynamic mass in the massless NJL model, we propose a new phase - quasi-Wigner phase in this article, it has small but nonzero dynamic mass, with increasing chemical potential, eventually Nambu phase will turn into quasi-Wigner phase with first-order phase transition, therefore the chiral symmetry can never be fully restored but be partially restored. Furthermore, we prove that pseudovector condensate in self-energy can generate energy splitting in dispersion relation, it will cause minor differences of particle numbers with the split energy levels.
Strongly interacting matter in a sphere at nonzero magnetic field

Abstract:We investigate the chiral phase transition within a sphere under a uniform background magnetic field. The Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model is employed and the MIT boundary condition is imposed for the spherical confinement. Using the wave expansion method, the diagonalizable Hamiltonian and energy spectrum are derived for the system. By solving the gap equation in the NJL model, the influence of magnetic field on quark matter in a sphere is studied. It is found that inverse magnetic catalysis occurs at small radii, while magnetic catalysis occurs at large radii. Additionally, both magnetic catalysis and inverse magnetic catalysis are observed at the intermediate radii ($R\approx4$ fm).
