Abstract:Luminous blue variable stars (LBVs) are of great interest in massive-star evolution as they experience very high mass-loss episodes within short periods of time. HR Car is a famous member of this class in the Galaxy. It has a large circumstellar nebula and has also been confirmed as being in a binary system. One means of gaining information about the evolutionary status and physical nature of LBVs is studying their environments. We investigated the stellar content within ~100 pc of HR Car and also its circumstellar nebula. Very Large Telescope (VLT) Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observations of a 2'x2' region around the star highlight the incompleteness of stellar classification for stars with magnitudes of V > 13 mag. Eight B0 to B9 stars have been identified which may lie in close spatial vicinity to HR Car. For a region with a radius of r =1.2 degree (~100 pc at a distance of 4.8 kpc) around HR Car, existing catalogs list several late O-type and early B-type stars, but only one early O-type star. Given the relatively low stellar and nebular masses in the HR Car system, no early O-type stars and only a few late O-type stars would be expected in association with HR Car. Instead, HR Car's location in a point vector diagram suggests that HR Car is not isolated, but is part of a moving group with a population of B-type stars in a spiral arm, and it has not received a strong kick from a supernova explosion of a companion star or a merger event. Potential binary evolution pathways for the HR Car system cannot be fully explored because of the unknown nature of the companion star. Furthermore, the MUSE observations reveal the presence of a fast outflow and "bullets" that have been ejected at intervals of about 400 years. These features may have been caused by recurrent mass transfer in the system.

The shape of $η$ Carinae and LBV Nebulae

Abstract:Stellar winds emitted by rotating massive stars may show two main components: firstly bipolar lobes with low density and fast wind, produced by the higher T$_{\mathrm{eff}}$ and gravity at the poles (`g$_{\mathrm{eff}}$-effect'); secondly, an equatorial disc with a slow dense wind, produced by the stronger opacities at the equator (`$\kappa$-effect'). To see the possible role of this anisotropic wind on the shape of LBV nebulae, we calculate the distribution of the ejected matter in 2 simplified cases: 1) A brief shell ejection. We find that prolate and peanut-shaped hollow nebulae naturally form due to the g$_{\mathrm{eff}}$-effect in rotating stars. 2) A constant wind for a long time. This produces prolate filled nebulae, with a possible strong disc when a bi-stability limit is crossed in the equatorial region. Thus, many features of the $\eta$ Carinae and LBV nebulae are accounted for by the anisotropic ejection from rotating stars.

Abstract:Single-dish sub-millimeter observations have recently revealed the existence of a substantial, chemically peculiar, molecular gas component located in the innermost circumstellar environment of the very massive luminous blue variable star $\eta$ Carinae. Here, we present 5$"$-resolution interferometric observations of the 1$\rightarrow$0 rotational transition of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) toward this star. The emission is concentrated in the central few arcseconds around $\eta$ Carinae and shows a clear 150 km s$^{-1}$ velocity gradient running from west-north-west (blue) to east-south-east (red). Given the extent, location, and kinematics of this molecular material, we associate it with the complex of dusty arcs and knots seen in mid-infrared emission near the center of the Homunculus nebula. Indeed, the shielding provided by this dust could help explain how molecules survive in the presence of the intense UV radiation field produced by $\eta$ Carinae. The dust located in the central few arcseconds around $\eta$ Carinae and the molecular component described here have most likely formed in situ, out of material expelled by the massive interacting binary system. Thus, $\eta$ Carinae offers us a rare glimpse on the processes leading to the formation of dust and molecules around massive stars that are so relevant to the interpretation of dust and molecule detections at high redshifts.
The Unusual Distributions of Ionized Material and Molecular Hydrogen in NGC 6881: Signposts of Multiple Events of Bipolar Ejection in a Planetary Nebula

Abstract:The planetary nebula NGC 6881 displays in the optical a quadrupolar morphology consisting of two pairs of highly collimated bipolar lobes aligned along different directions. An additional bipolar ejection is revealed by the hydrogen molecular emission, but its wide hourglass morphology is very different from that of the ionized material. To investigate in detail the spatial distribution of molecular hydrogen and ionized material within NGC 6881, and to determine the prevalent excitation mechanism of the H2 emission, we have obtained new near-IR Br-gamma and H2 and optical H-alpha and [N II] images, as well as intermediate resolution JHK spectra. These observations confirm the association of the H2 bipolar lobes to NGC 6881 and find that the prevalent excitation mechanism is collisional. The detailed morphology and very different collimation degree of the H2 and ionized bipolar lobes of NGC 6881 not only imply that multiple bipolar ejections have occurred in this nebula, but also that the dominant shaping agent is different for each bipolar ejection: a bipolar stellar wind most likely produced the H2 lobes, while highly collimated outflows are carving out the ionized lobes into the thick circumstellar envelope. The asymmetry between the southeast and northwest H2 bipolar lobes suggests the interaction of the nebula with an inhomogeneous interstellar medium. We find evidence that places NGC 6881 in the H II region Sh 2-109 along the Orion local spiral arm.
Dissecting the Homunculus nebula around Eta Carinae with spatially resolved near-infrared spectroscopy

Abstract:Near‐infrared emission lines are unique diagnostics of the geometry, structure, kinematics, and excitation of the circumstellar ejecta of η Carinae, and give clues to the nature of its wind. The infrared spectrum is a strong function of position in η Car's nebula, with a mix of intrinsic and reflected emission. Molecular hydrogen traces cool gas and dust in the polar lobes, while [Fe ii] blankets their inner surfaces. These lines reveal the back wall of the SE polar lobe for the first time, and give the clearest picture yet of the three‐dimensional geometry. Additionally, collisionally excited [Fe ii] reveals the kinematic structure of a recently discovered ‘Little Homunculus’ expanding inside the larger one. Equatorial gas in the ‘Fan’, on the other hand, shows a spectrum indicating recombination and fluorescent Lyα pumping. Some equatorial ejecta glow in the He iλ10830 line, showing evidence for material ejected in the 1890 outburst of η Car. Closer to the star, the compact ‘Weigelt blobs’ are marginally resolved, allowing their infrared spectrum to be separated from the star for the first time. In general, infrared spectra reveal a coherent, directional dependence of excitation in the Homunculus: polar ejecta are collisionally excited, whereas equatorial ejecta are dominated by fluorescence and normal photoexcitation. These are important clues to the geometry of the central star's ultraviolet radiation field. Reflected near‐infrared emission lines also reveal interesting latitudinal dependence in the stellar wind.

Luminous blue variables: An imaging perspective on their binarity and near environment

Abstract:Context. Luminous blue variables (LBVs) are rare massive stars with very high luminosity. They are characterized by strong photometric and spectroscopic variability related to transient eruptions. The mechanisms at the origin of these eruptions is not well known. In addition, their formation is still problematic and the presence of a companion could help to explain how they form. Aims. This article presents a study of seven LBVs (about 20% of the known Galactic population), some Wolf-Rayet stars, and massive binaries. We probe the environments that surround these massive stars with near-, mid-, and far-infrared images, investigating potential nebula/shells and the companion stars. Methods. To investigate large spatial scales, we used seeing-limited and near diffraction-limited adaptive optics images to obtain a differential diagnostic on the presence of circumstellar matter and to determine their extent. From those images, we also looked for the presence of binary companions on a wide orbit. Once a companion was detected, its gravitational binding to the central star was tested. Tests include the chance projection probability, the proper motion estimates with multi-epoch observations, flux ratio, and star separations. Results. We find that two out of seven of LBVs may have a wide orbit companion. Most of the LBVs display a large circumstellar envelope or several shells. In particular, HD 168625, known for its rings, possesses several shells with possibly a large cold shell at the edge of which the rings are formed. For the first time, we have directly imaged the companion of LBV stars.

Abstract:Context. Complex bipolar shapes can be generated either as a planetary nebula or a symbiotic system. The origin of the material ionised by the white dwarf is very different in these two scenarios, and it complicates the understanding of the morphologies of planetary nebulae. Aims. The physical properties, structure, and dynamics of the bipolar nebulae, M 2-9, Mz 3, and Hen 2-104, are investigated in detail with the aim of understanding their nature, shaping mechanisms, and evolutionary history. Methods. Long-slit optical echelle spectra are used to investigate the morpho-kinematics of M 2-9, Mz 3, and Hen 2-104. Near-infrared (NIR) data, as well as optical, spectra are used to separate Galactic symbiotic-type nebulae from genuine planetary nebulae by means of a 2MASS J-H/H-Ks diagram and a {\lambda}4363/H{\gamma} vs. {\lambda}5007/H\b{eta} diagnostic diagram, respectively. Results. The best-fitted 3-D models for M 2-9, Mz 3, and Hen 2-104 provide invaluable kinematical information on the expansion velocity of its nebular components by means of synthetic spectra. Kinematical ages of the different structures of M 2-9 and Mz 3 have also been determined. Both diagnostic diagrams show M 2-9 and Hen 2-104 to fall well within the category of having a symbiotic source, whereas Mz 3 borders the region of symbiotic and young planetary nebulae in the optical diagram. The optical diagnostic diagram is shown to successfully separate the two types of nebulae. Conclusions. The morphology, kinematics, and evolutionary history of M 2-9, Mz 3, and Hen 2-104 are better understood using the interactive 3-D modelling tool shape. The optical and NIR diagnostic diagrams used are important techniques for separating Galactic symbiotic-type nebulae from genuine planetary nebulae.

Pushing the limits: detecting H2 emission from faint bipolar planetary nebulae in the IPHAS sample

Abstract:We have obtained deep narrowband images in the near-infrared H2 (2.122 microns) emission line for a sample of 15 faint Isaac Newton Telescope Photometric Halpha Survey (IPHAS) bipolar planetary nebulae (PNe) to search for molecular material. H2 emission is found in most of them (14 out of 15), mostly associated with rings at their equatorial regions and with their bipolar lobes. These detections add to the high occurrence of H2 emission among bipolar PNe reported in previous works, resulting from the large reservoir of molecular material in these sources and the suitable excitation conditions for H2 emission. The correlation between detailed bipolar morphology and H2 luminosity is also confirmed: bipolar PNe with broad equatorial rings (R-BPNe) have almost no continuum emission, are H2 brighter and have larger H2/Brgamma line ratio than bipolar PNe with pinched equatorial waists (W-BPNe). The origin of this dichotomy is unclear. The larger size and age of R-BPNe are consistent with shock excitation of H2, whereas ultraviolet pumping is most likely the excitation mechanism in the smaller and younger W-BPNe, which would explain their lower H2 luminosity. Although both types of bipolar PNe seem to proceed from the same progenitor population, this does not imply that R-BPNe descend from W-BPNe. Otherwise, we note that some of the H2-weak bipolar PNe harbor post-common envelope binary systems and symbiotic stars. Finally, we suggest that the long-living H2 emission from R-BPNe arises from a discrete distribution of compact knots embedded within the ionized gas at the equatorial region.

The LMC HII region N 214C and its peculiar nebular blob

Abstract:We study the Large Magellanic Cloud HII region N 214C using imaging and spectroscopy obtained at the ESO New Technology Telescope. On the basis of the highest resolution images so far obtained of the OB association LH 110, we show that the main exciting source of the HII region, Sk -71 51, is in fact a tight cluster of massive stars consisting of at least 6 components in an area ~ 4" wide. Spectroscopic observations allow us to revise the spectral type of the main component (# 17) to O2 V ((f*)) + OB, a very rare, hot type. We also classify several other stars associated with N 214C and study the extinction and excitation characteristics of the HII region. Moreover, we obtain BVR photometry and astrometry of 2365 stars and from the corresponding color-magnitude diagram study the stellar content of N 214C and the surrounding LH 110. Furthermore, we discover a striking compact blob of ionized gas in the outer northern part of N 214C. A spherical structure of ~ 5" in radius (~ 1.3 pc), it is split into two lobes by absorbing dust running diametrically through its center. We discuss the possible nature of this object.

Nature Versus Nurture: Luminous Blue Variable Nebulae in and near Massive Stellar Clusters at the Galactic Center

Abstract:Three Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs) are located in and near the Quintuplet Cluster at the Galactic Center: the Pistol star, G0.120-0.048, and qF362. We present imaging at 19, 25, 31, and 37 {\mu}m of the region containing these three LBVs, obtained with SOFIA using FORCAST. We argue that the Pistol and G0.120-0.048 are identical ``twins" that exhibit contrasting nebulae due to the external influence of their different environments. Our images reveal the asymmetric, compressed shell of hot dust surrounding the Pistol Star and provide the first detection of the thermal emission from the symmetric, hot dust envelope surrounding G0.120-0.048. Dust and gas composing the Pistol nebula are primarily heated and ionized by the nearby Quintuplet Cluster stars. The northern region of the Pistol nebula is decelerated due to the interaction with the high-velocity (2000 km/s) winds from adjacent Wolf-Rayet Carbon (WC) stars. With the DustEM code we determine that the Pistol nebula is composed of a distribution of very small, transiently-heated grains (10-~35 Å) and that it exhibits a gradient of decreasing grain size from the south to the north due to differential sputtering by the winds from the WC stars. Dust in the G0.120-0.048 nebula is primarily heated by the central star; however, the nebular gas is ionized externally by the Arches Cluster. Unlike the Pistol nebula, the G0.120-0.048 nebula is freely expanding into the surrounding medium. Given independent dust and gas mass estimates we find that the Pistol and G0.120-0.048 nebulae exhibit similar gas-to-dust mass ratios of ~310 and ~290, respectively. Both nebulae share identical size scales (~ 0.7 pc) which suggests that they have similar dynamical timescales of ~10^5 yrs, assuming a shell expansion velocity of v_exp 60 km/s.

The excitation mechanism of H2 in bipolar planetary nebulae

Abstract:We present near-IR K-band intermediate-dispersion spatially-resolved spectroscopic observations of a limited sample of bipolar planetary nebulae (PNe). The spectra have been used to determine the excitation mechanism of the H2 molecule using standard line ratios diagnostics. The H2 molecule is predominantly shock-excited in bipolar PNe with broad equatorial rings, whereas bipolar PNe with narrow equatorial waists present either UV excitation at their cores (e.g., Hb 12) or shock-excitation at their bipolar lobes (e.g., M1-92). The shock-excitation among bipolar PNe with ring is found to be correlated with emission in the H2 1-0 S(1) line brighter than Br{\gamma}. We have extended this investigation to other PNe with available near-IR spectroscopic observations. This confirms that bipolar PNe with equatorial rings are in average brighter in H2 than in Br{\gamma} and show dominant shock excitation.

Evidence for a [WR] or WEL-type binary nucleus in the bipolar planetary nebula Vy 1-2

Abstract:We present high-dispersion spectroscopic data of the compact planetary nebula Vy 1-2, where high expansion velocities up to 100 km/s are found in the Ha, [N II] and [O III] emission lines. HST images reveal a bipolar structure. Vy 1-2 displays a bright ring-like structure with a size of 2.4"x3.2" and two faint bipolar lobes in the west-east direction. A faint pair of knots is also found, located almost symmetrically on opposite sides of the nebula at PA=305 degrees. Furthermore, deep low-dispersion spectra are also presented and several emission lines are detected for the first time in this nebula, such as the doublet [Cl III] 5517, 5537 A, [K IV] 6101 A, C II 6461 A, the doublet C IV 5801, 5812 A. By comparison with the solar abundances, we find enhanced N, depleted C and solar O. The central star must have experienced the hot bottom burning (CN-cycle) during the 2nd dredge-up phase, implying a progenitor star of higher than 3 solar masses. The very low C/O and N/O abundance ratios suggest a likely post-common envelope close binary system. A simple spherically symmetric geometry with either a blackbody or a H-deficient stellar atmosphere model is not able to reproduce the ionisation structure of Vy 1-2. The effective temperature and luminosity of its central star indicate a young nebula located at a distance of ~9.7 kpc with an age of ~3500 years. The detection of stellar emission lines, C II 6461 A, the doublet C IV {\lambda}{\lambda} 5801, 5812 A and O III 5592 A, emitted from a H-deficient star, indicates the presence of a late-type Wolf-Rayet or a WEL type central star.

Herschel imaging and spectroscopy of the nebula around the luminous blue variable star WRAY 15-751

Abstract:We have obtained far-infrared Herschel PACS imaging and spectroscopic observations of the nebular environment of the luminous blue variable WRAY 15-751. These images clearly show that the main, dusty nebula is a shell of radius 0.5 pc and width 0.35 pc extending outside the H-alpha nebula. They also reveal a second, bigger and fainter dust nebula, observed for the first time. Both nebulae lie in an empty cavity, likely the remnant of the O-star wind bubble formed when the star was on the main sequence. The kinematic ages of the nebulae are about 20000 and 80000 years and each nebula contains about 0.05 Msun of dust. Modeling of the inner nebula indicates a Fe-rich dust. The far-infrared spectrum of the main nebula revealed forbidden emission lines coming from ionized and neutral gas. Our study shows that the main nebula consists of a shell of ionized gas surrounded by a thin photodissociation region illuminated by an "average" early-B star. The derived abundance ratios N/O=1.0+/-0.4 and C/O=0.4+/-0.2 indicate a mild N/O enrichment. We estimate that the inner shell contains 1.7+/-0.6 Msun of gas. Assuming a similar dust-to-gas ratio for the outer nebula, the total mass ejected by WRAY 15-751 amounts to 4+/-2 Msun. The measured abundances, masses and kinematic ages of the nebulae were used to constrain the evolution of the star and the epoch at which the nebulae were ejected. Our results point to an ejection of the nebulae during the RSG evolutionary phase of an ~ 40 Msun star. The presence of multiple shells around the star suggests that the mass-loss was not a continuous ejection but rather a series of episodes of extreme mass-loss. Our measurements are compatible with the recent evolutionary tracks computed for an 40 Msun star with little rotation. They support the O-BSG-RSG-YSG-LBV filiation and the idea that high-luminosity and low-luminosity LBVs follow different evolutionary paths.

On the bipolarity of Wolf-Rayet nebulae

Abstract:Wolf-Rayet stars are amongst the rarest but also most intriguing massive stars. Their extreme stellar winds induce famous multi-wavelength circumstellar gas nebulae of various morphologies, spanning from circles and rings to bipolar shapes. This study is devoted to the investigation of the formation of young, asymmetric Wolf-Rayet gas nebulae and we present a 2.5-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamical toy model for the simulation of Wolf-Rayet gas nebulae generated by wind-wind interaction. Our method accounts for stellar wind asymmetries, rotation, magnetisation, evolution and mixing of materials. It is found that the morphology of the Wolf-Rayet nebulae of blue supergiant ancestors is tightly related to the wind geometry and to the stellar phase transition time interval, generating either a broadened peanut-like or a collimated jet-like gas nebula. Radiative transfer calculations of our Wolf-Rayet nebulae for dust infrared emission at 24 $\mu$m show that the projected diffuse emission can appear as oblate, bipolar, ellipsoidal or ring structures. Important projection effects are at work in shaping observed Wolf-Rayet nebulae. This might call a revision of the various classifications of Wolf-Rayet shells, which are mostly based on their observed shape. Particularly, our models question the possibility of producing pre-Wolf-Rayet wind asymmetries, responsible for bipolar nebulae like NGC 6888, within the single red supergiant evolution channel scenario. We propose that bipolar Wolf-Rayet nebulae can only be formed within the red supergiant scenario by multiple/merged massive stellar systems, or by single high-mass stars undergoing additional, e.g. blue supergiant, evolutionary stages prior to the Wolf-Rayet phase.

Disentangling the outflow and protostars in HH 900 in the Carina Nebula

Abstract:HH 900 is a peculiar protostellar outflow emerging from a small, tadpole-shaped globule in the Carina nebula. Previous H{\alpha} imaging with HST/ACS showed an ionized outflow with a wide opening angle that is distinct from the highly collimated structures typically seen in protostellar jets. We present new narrowband near-IR [Fe II] images taken with the Wide Field Camera 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope that reveal a remarkably different structure than H{\alpha}. In contrast to the unusual broad H{\alpha} outflow, the [Fe II] emission traces a symmetric, collimated bipolar jet with the morphology and kinematics that are more typical of protostellar jets. In addition, new Gemini adaptive optics images reveal near-IR H$_2$ emission coincident with the H{\alpha} emission, but not the [Fe II]. Spectra of these three components trace three separate and distinct velocity components: (1) H$_2$ from the slow, entrained molecular gas, (2) H{\alpha} from the ionized skin of the accelerating outflow sheath, and (3) [Fe II] from the fast, dense, and collimated protostellar jet itself. Together, these data require a driving source inside the dark globule that remains undetected behind a large column density of material. In contrast, H{\alpha} and H$_2$ emission trace the broad outflow of material entrained by the jet, which is irradiated outside the globule. As it get dissociated and ionized, it remains visible for only a short time after it is dragged into the H II region.

Abstract:Space motions are given for 38 RR Lyrae (RRL) stars and 79 blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars in a ~200 deg2 area around the North Galactic Pole (NGP) using a homogeneous distance scale consistent with (m-M)0=18.52 for the LMC. The kinematics of the 26 RRL and 52 BHB stars in the 10.4 cubic kpc volume that have Z<8 kpc are not homogeneous. Our BHB sample (like that of Sirko et al. 2004b) has a zero galactic rotation (V_phi) and roughly isotropic velocity dispersions. The RRL sample shows a definite retrograde rotation (V_phi = -95+/-29 km/s) and non-isotropic velocity dispersions. The combined BHB and RRL sample has a retrograde galactic rotation (V) that is similar to that found by Majewski (1992) for his sample of subdwarfs in SA 57. The velocity dispersion of the RRL stars that have a positive W motion is significantly smaller than the dispersion of those "streaming down" with a negative W. One component of our sample (rich in RRL's) shows retrograde rotation and the streaming motion that we associate with the accretion process. The other (traced by the BHB stars) shows essentially no rotation and less evidence of streaming. These two components have HB morphologies that suggest that they may be the field star equivalents of the young and old halo globular clusters respectively.
Halpha spectropolarimetry of the B[e] supergiant GG Carinae

Abstract:Aims. We study the geometry of the circumstellar environment of the B[e] supergiant star GG Car. Methods. We present observations acquired using the IAGPOL imaging polarimeter in combination with the Eucalyptus-IFU spectrograph to obtain spectropolarimetric measurements of GG Car across Halpha at two epochs. Polarization effects along the emission line are analysed using the Q-U diagram. In particular, the polarization position angle (PA) obtained using the line effect is able to constrain the symmetry axis of the disk/envelope. Results. By analysing the fluxes, GG Car shows an increase in its double-peaked Halpha line emission relative to the continuum within the interval of our measurements (~43 days). The depolarization line effect around Halpha is evident in the Q-U diagram for both epochs, confirming that light from the system is intrinsically polarized. A rotation of the PA along Halpha is also observed, indicating a counter-clockwise rotating disk. The intrinsic PA calculated using the line effect (~85deg) is consistent between our two epochs, suggesting a clearly defined symmetry axis of the disk.

Abstract:Context: GR290 (M33 V0532=Romano's star) is a luminous M33 object undergoing photometric variability typical for luminous blue variable (LBV) stars. It lies inside Wolf-Rayet region in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and possesses a WN8 type spectrum at the light minima. Analysis of Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) spectra obtained in 2016 led to the conclusion that it is surrounded by an unresolved HII region formed mostly of ejected material from the central star, and disclosed the presence of a second, more extended asymmetrical emission region. Aims: The aim of this paper is to further explore the structure of the nearby environment of GR290. Methods: Long-slit spectra of GR290 were obtained with three slit orientations in the visual and red spectral regions. The emission-line distribution for each slit was analyzed. Results: We confirm the presence of an asymmetric HII region that extends ~50 pc to the south; ~30pc to the north and southeast; ~20 pc to the east and northwest and ~10pc to the west. We also present the first spectrum to be acquired of a star belonging to the neighboring OB88 association, J013501.87+304157.3, which we classify as a B-type supergiant with a possible binary companion.

Abstract:Numerous planetary nebulae show complicated inner structures that are not obvious to explain. For one such object, we undertook a detailed 3D photoionisation and kinematical model analysis to gain a better understanding of the underlying shaping processes. We obtained 2D ARGUS/IFU spectroscopy covering the whole nebula in selected representative emission lines. We used 3D photoionisation modelling to compute images and line profiles, and a comparison of the observations with the models was performed to fine-tune the model details. This procedure predicts the approximate nebular 3D structure and kinematics. We find that within a cylindrical outer nebula, there is a hidden, very dense bar-like or cylindrical inner structure. Both structures are co-axial and are inclined to the sky by 40 deg. We propose that the wide, asymmetric, one-sided plume is a flat structure attached to one end of the bar. All nebular components share the same kinematics, with an isotropic velocity field that monotonically increases with distance from the star before reaching a plateau. The relatively low velocities indicate that the observed shapes do not require particularly energetic processes, and there is no indication for the current presence of a jet. The 3D model reproduces the observed line ratios and the detailed structure of the object significantly better than previous models.

Abstract:A survey for candidate Herbig-Haro objects was performed to search for evidence of star formation in Galactic dark clouds. For this aim true colour images were created from blue, red, and infrared DSS2 plates and inspected. Follow-up I-band, Halpha, and [SII] CCD imaging and long-slit spectroscopy using the Tautenburg 2-m telescope was carried out to verify candidate objects. In the case of LDN 1415, the presence of a Herbig-Haro flow could be revealed which is henceforth named HH 892. In addition, an arcuate nebula was found which is barely seen on the DSS2 infrared plate (epoch 1996) and not detected in archival Kiso Schmidt data (epoch 2001). Thus, this nebula must have brightened by about 3.8mag in recent <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://years.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> nebula is associated with IRAS 04376+5413. The 2MASS images show a red counterpart of the IRAS source, designated as L1415-IRS. Its morphology resembles that of a bipolar young object. The luminosity of this source integrated from 0.9micron to 60micron in the low state amounts to 0.13L_sun for an assumed distance of 170pc. Thus it seems to be a young very-low mass star or it might even be of substellar mass. The current brightness increase of the nebula is caused by a FUor- or EXor-like outburst as indicated by the presence of a P Cygni profile of the Halpha line. L1415-IRS is by far the least luminous member of the sparse sample of FUor and EXor objects.
