Abstract:We performed simulations on in-plane current driven Josephson vortex systems in high-T-C, cuprates at weak parallel magnetic fields and /or low anisotropies. It is found that the in-plane resistivity is Lorentz-force dependent at small current regime below the melting transition. As the current increases, the Josephson vortex lattice melts dynamically, the Lorentz-force independence of resistivity reappears. These results are possibly related to the experiments on YBCO.
The Two Component Optical Conductivity in the Cuprates: A Necessary Consequence of Preformed Pairs

Abstract:We address how the finite frequency real conductivity $\sigma(\omega)$ in the underdoped cuprates is affected by the pseudogap, contrasting the behavior above and below $T_c$. The f-sum rule is analytically shown to hold. Here we presume the pseudogap is associated with non-condensed pairs arising from stronger-than-BCS attraction. This leads to both a Drude and a mid infrared (MIR) peak, the latter associated with the energy needed to break pairs. These general characteristics appear consistent with experiment. Importantly, there is no more theoretical flexibility (phenomenology) here than in BCS theory; the origin of the two component conductivity we find is robust.

Abstract:The measurements of anisotropic resistivities of single- and double-layered Bi-system cuprates at different doping levels are presented. The two types of materials exhibit qualitatively common features in both doping and temperature dependences of their c-axis resistivities. The c-axis conduction is incoherent in nature because the ?c data are deeply on the insulating side of the Mott limit, even though positive slopes (d?c/dT>0) are observed below room temperature for overdoped samples. Some differences are revealed by quantifying the trend of ?c(T) data, which may reflect differences in the charge excitation spectra.

Abstract:Abstract: The c-axis charge dynamics of copper oxide materials in the underdoped and optimally doped regimes has been studied by considering the incoherent interlayer hopping. It is shown that the c-axis charge dynamics for the chain copper oxide materials is mainly governed by the scattering from the in-plane fluctuation, and the c-axis charge dynamics for the no-chain copper oxide materials is dominated by the scattering from the in-plane fluctuation incorporating with the interlayer disorder, which would be suppressed when the holon pseudogap opens at low temperatures and lower doping levels, leading to the crossovers to the semiconducting-like range in the c-axis resistivity and the temperature linear to the nonlinear range in the in-plane resistivity.

Abstract:We consider the scenario where a 4-lattice constant, rotationally symmetric charge density wave (CDW) is present in the underdoped cuprates. We prove a theorem that puts strong constraint on the possible form factor of such a CDW. We demonstrate, within mean-field theory, that a particular form factor within the allowed class describes the angle-resolved photoemission and scan tunneling spectroscopy well. We conjecture that the ``large pseudogap'' in cuprates is the consequence of this type of charge density wave.

Abstract:From analysis of the in-plane resistivity $\rho_{ab}(T)$ of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, we show that normal state transport in overdoped cuprates can be delineated into two regimes in which the electrical resistivity varies approximately linearly with temperature. In the low temperature limit, the $T$-linear resistivity extends over a very wide doping range, in marked contrast to expectations from conventional quantum critical scenarios. The coefficient of this $T$-linear resistivity scales with the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, implying that the interaction causing this anomalous scattering is also associated with the superconducting pairing mechanism. At high temperatures, the coefficient of the $T$-linear resistivity is essentially doping independent beyond a critical doping $p_{\rm crit}$ = 0.19 at which the ratio of the two coefficients is maximal. Taking our cue from earlier thermodynamic and photoemission measurements, we conclude that the opening of the normal state pseudogap at $p_{\rm crit}$ is driven by the loss of coherence of anti-nodal quasiparticles at low temperatures.

Abstract:The dispersion spectrum of single hole in a bilayer composed of plane and chain, each described by t-J model, coupled by - interactions between them, is calculated in terms of self-consistent Born approximation. It was found that for a weak interlayer coupling the two different quasiparticle bands, plane-like and chain-like bands, show a minimum at (, ) and a maximum at (0, 0) or (, ). In plane-like dispersion we can find an anomalous “flat” region near Fermi surface along the antiferromagnetic Brillouin zone boundary, which favors the formation of the van-Hove singularities. With increasing interlayer coupling, a large modification of the dispersions is carried out, the minimum deviates from (, ) and the energy gap of the two bands decreases and finally disappears when the vertical coupling is larger enough. The shapes of the QP bands are sensitive to the vertical hopping  rather than the vertical exchange energy . As the interlayer coupling increases, the shapes of the two QP bands suggest that the chain-like band approaches to that of quasi-one dimensional model, and the plane-like band undergoes the one layer t - t '-J models' band.

Abstract:Pseudogap phenomena of high-T-c cuprates are examined based on the scenario of the precursor of the strong coupling superconductivity. The "pairing approximation" of the T-matrix formalism is used and a full self-consistent numerical calculation is carried out. We show that the pseudogap opens at different regions in the momentum space at different temperatures, which is consistent with the angle-resolved photoemission experiments. We also investigate the dependences of the pseudogap on temperature, the coupling strength, and the hole concentration.

Abstract:The thermal conductivity. of the cuprate superconductor La1.6-xNd0.4SrxCuO4 was measured down to 50 mK in seven crystals with doping from p = 0.12 to p = 0.24, both in the superconducting state and in the magnetic field-induced normal state. We obtain the electronic residual linear term kappa(0)/T as T -> 0 across the pseudogap critical point p* = 0.23. In the normal state, we observe an abrupt drop in kappa(0)/T upon crossing below p*, consistent with a drop in carrier density n from 1 + p to p, the signature of the pseudogap phase inferred from the Hall coefficient. A similar drop in kappa(0)/T is observed at H = 0, showing that the pseudogap critical point and its signatures are unaffected by the magnetic field. In the normal state, the Wiedemann-Franz law, kappa(0)/T = L-0/rho(0), is obeyed at all dopings, including at the critical point where the electrical resistivity rho(T) is T linear down to T -> 0. We conclude that the nonsuperconducting ground state of the pseudogap phase at T = 0 is a metal whose fermionic excitations carry heat and charge as conventional electrons do.
Anisotropic Quantum Transport in Layered High--$T_c$ Cuprates

Abstract:A random lattice model with dilute interlayer bonds of density $p$ is proposed to describe the underdoped high--$T_c$ cuprates. We show analytically via an appropriate perturbation expansion and verify independently by numerical scaling of the conductance that for any finite $p$ the states remain extended in all directions, despite the presence of interlayer disorder. However, the obtained electronic transport is highly anisotropic with violent conductance fluctuations occuring in the layering direction, which can be responsible for the experimentally observed metallic "in-plane" and semiconducting "out-of-plane" resistivity of the cuprates.

Abstract:The closely related temperature dependences of both magnetic and charge transport properties for underdoped high-T-c cuprates are investigated. The spin pseudogap is suggested to follow from the deviation of the chemical potential away from the van Hove singularity (vHs) as the system goes into the underdoped regime. A correlation between the anomalous transport properties and the opening of the spin pesudogap is demonstrated.

Abstract:An interesting concept in condensed matter physics is Planckian dissipation, in particular its manifestation in a remarkable phenomenology of superfluid density as a function of superconducting transition temperature. The concept was ontroduced for $ab$-plane properties. However, when suitably interpreted, it can also be applicable to the incoherent $c$-axis resistivity, which has not been adequately addressed previously. There are two results in this note: the first is a derivation using Kubo formula as to how Planckian dissipation could arise. It is aided by the fact that the $c$-axis tunneling matrix element is so small that a second order perturbation theory combined with presumed non-Fermi liquid behavior is sufficient to illuminate the phenomonon. In addition, the notion of quantum criticality plays an important role.

The role of the pseudogap in cuprate superconductors revealed by the Hall effect

Abstract:Cuprate high-temperature superconductors are known to have a normal-state pseudogap but, after many years of intense research, its relation to the superconductivity is still a mystery. Similarly, the in-plane Hall coefficient $R_{\rm H}$ has a large temperature variation caused by changes in the carrier density which is also a long-standing puzzle. We approach both problems by a kinetic theory of phase separation that reproduces the charge density wave by a free energy array of potential wells. The charge modulation favors local hole-hole attraction yielding local superconducting pairs and a transition by long-range phase order at $T_{\rm c}$. As the temperature increases the modulations decrease and the charge density increases by thermal activation. This approach reproduces the $R_{\rm H}$ of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ compounds of $x = 0.0 - 0.25$ and clarifies the role of the pseudogap and the disorder in cuprates.

Abstract:The presence of a normal state spectral (pseudo) gap at the superconducting transition temperature in the underdoped cuprates has important implications for the associated superconducting phase. We argue that this normal state pseudogap derives from pairing fluctuations, which necessarily persist below Tc and which have important implications on the superconducting state. Our Greens function approach, based on the equation of motion method, can be viewed as a natural extension of BCS theory for sufficiently strong pairing interaction, suggested by the short coherence length of the cuprates. In addition to the usual fermionic excitations, there are also incoherent (but not pre-formed) pairs of finite center of mass momentum which must be self consistently incorporated in computing Tc and other superconducting properties, such as the superfluid density and the Josephson critical current. Finally, we discuss some of the experimental implications of our theory for the cuprates.
Unidirectional charge correlations in hole-doped cuprates

Abstract:We examine charge correlations and instabilities in the pseudogap phase of high-$T_c$ cuprates modeled by $d$-density wave ordering. The latter has a gap symmetry similar to the one observed in the $d$-wave superconductor. We use $t$-$J$ model to describe the charge correlations in the presence of electron-phonon interaction. Our finding suggest that the charge instability in the normal state is dominating at an incommensurate wavevector along (1, 1) instead of (1, 0) for a realistic interaction parameter. The dominance at the diagonal wavevector is further enhanced if the coupling between electron and bond-buckling $B_{1g}$ phonon is incorporated. On the other hand, a dominating charge-density correlation develops along (1, 0) at an incommensurate wavevector in the $d$-density wave ordered state, which shows a qualitative agreement with the experiments. The correlation becomes robust only in the presence of $B_{1g}$ phonon.

Abstract:High-$T_c$ cuprates are characterized by strong spin fluctuations, which give rise to antiferromagnetic and pseudogap phases and may be key to the high superconducting critical temperatures observed in these materials. Experimental studies have revealed significant changes in the Hall coefficient $R_H$ across these phases, a phenomenon closely related to both spin fluctuations and changes in the Fermi surface morphology. Using the perturbation correction to Gaussian approximation (PCGA), we investigate the two-dimensional(2D) square-lattice single-band Hubbard model and obtain the self-energy with a finite imaginary part due to scattering. We calculate the density dependence of the Hall number $n_H=1/(qR_H)$. For small hole (or electron) doping $p$ (or $x$), our numerical results show that $n_H$ transitions from $p$ to $1+p$ for hole-doped systems, and from $-x$ to $1-x$ for electron-doped systems -- both in agreement with experimental findings. Furthermore, we discuss the correlation between phase boundaries and the observed peculiar changes in the Hall number.

Abstract:The pseudogap phenomena have been a long-standing mystery of the cuprate high-temperature superconductors. The pseudogap in the electron-doped cuprates has been attributed to band folding due to antiferromagnetic (AFM) long-range order or short-range correlation. We performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of the electron-doped cuprates Pr$_{1.3-x}$La$_{0.7}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ showing spin-glass, disordered AFM behaviors, and superconductivity at low temperatures and, by measurements with fine momentum cuts, found that the gap opens on the unfolded Fermi surface rather than the AFM Brillouin zone boundary. The gap did not show a node, following the full symmetry of the Brillouin zone, and its magnitude decreased from the zone-diagonal to ($\pi$,0) directions, opposite to the hole-doped case. These observations were reproduced by cluster dynamical-mean-field-theory (CDMFT) calculation, which took into account electron correlation precisely within a (CuO$_2$)$_4$ cluster. The present experimental and theoretical results are consistent with the mechanism that electron or hole doping into a Mott insulator creates an in-gap band that are separated from the upper or lower Hubbard band by the pseudogap.

A Two Energy Gap Preformed-Pair Scenario for the Cuprates

Abstract:We show how, within a preformed pair for the cuprate pseudogap, the nodal and antinodal responses in angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy necessarily have very different temperature $T$ dependences. We examine the behavior and the contrasting $T$ dependences for a range of temperatures both below and above $T_c$. Our calculations are based on a fully microscopic $T$-matrix approach for addressing pairing correlations in a regime where the attraction is stronger than BCS and the coherence length is anomalously short. Previously, the distinct nodal and anti-nodal responses have provided strong support for the two-gap scenario of the cuprates in which the pseudogap competes with superconductivity. Instead, our theory supports a picture in which the pseudogap derives from pairing correlations, identifying the two gap components with non-condensed and condensed pairs. It leads to reasonably good agreement with a range of different experiments in the moderately underdoped regime and we emphasize that here there is no explicit curve fitting. Ours is a microscopic rather than a phenomenological theory. We briefly address the more heavily underdoped regime in which the behavior is more complex.
C-Axis Tunneling Spectra in High-T$_c$ Superconductors in the Presence of a d Charge-Density Wave

Abstract:The optimally doped and underdoped region of the $t-J$ model at large N (N is the number of spin components) is governed by the competition of d-wave superconductivity (SC) and a d Charge-Density Wave (d-CDW).The partial destruction of the Fermi surface by the d-CDW and the resulting density of states are discussed. Furthermore, c-axis conductances for incoherent and coherent tunneling are calculated, considering both an isotropic and an anisotropic in-plane momentum dependence of the hopping matrix element between the planes. The influence of self-energy effects on the conductances is also considered using a model where the electrons interact with a dispersionless, low-lying branch of bosons. We show that available tunneling spectra from break-junctions are best explained by assuming that they result from incoherent tunneling with a strongly anisotropic hopping matrix element of the form suggested by band structure calculations. The conductance spectra are then characterized by one single peak which evolves continuously from the superconducting to the d-CDW state with decreasing doping. The intrinsic c-axis tunneling spectra are, on the other hand, best explained by coherent tunneling. Calculated spectra show at low temperatures two peaks due to SC and d-CDW. With increasing temperature the BCS-like peak moves to zero voltage and vanishes at T$_c$,exactly as in <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://experiment.Our" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> results thus can explain why break junction and intrinsic tunneling spectra are different from each other. Moreover, they support a scenario of two competing order parameters in the underdoped region of high-T$_c$ superconductors.

Link Between Magnetism and Resistivity Upturn in Cuprates: a Thermal Conductivity Study of La_2-xSr_xCuO_4

Abstract:A key unexplained feature of cuprate superconductors is the upturn in theirnormal state electrical resistivity ρ(T) seen at low temperature insidethe pseudogap phase. We examined this issue via measurements of the thermalconductivity κ(T) down to 50 mK and in fields up to 17 T on the cuprateLa_2-xSr_xCuO_4 at dopings p = 0.13, 0.136, 0.143 and 0.18. At p =0.136, 0.143, and 0.18, we observe an initial increase of the electronicthermal conductivity κ_0/T as a function of field, as expected in ad-wave superconductor. For p = 0.136 and 0.143, further increasing thefield then leads to a decrease of κ_0/T, which correlates with the onsetof spin density-wave order as observed in neutron scattering experiments on thesame samples. This decrease of κ_0/T with field is imposed by theWiedemann-Franz law and the high value of the resistivity in the high-fieldnormal state of these samples. Our study therefore provides a direct linkbetween magnetism and the resistivity upturn in the pseudogap phase ofcuprates. We discuss this scenario in the broader context of other cuprates.
