Abstract:We present a theory where the statistical mechanics for dilute ideal gases can be derived from random matrix approach. We show the connection of this approach with Srednicki approach which connects Berry conjecture with statistical mechanics. We further establish a link between Berry conjecture and random matrix theory, thus providing a unified edifice for quantum chaos, random matrix theory, and statistical mechanics. In the course of arguing for these connections, we observe sum rules associated with the outstanding counting problem in the theory of braid groups. We are able to show that the presented approach leads to the second law of thermodynamics.

Abstract:An alternative concept of the basic invariants is introduced. The Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory is extended to obtain a generalized invariant formulation. The formulation is then used to establish four facts: (i) Any invariant for a quantum system can be constructed in terms of the basic invariants. (ii) It is possible to introduce a solution-generating technique by making use of the basic invariants. (iii) The path integral in the generalized invariant formulation reduces to an ordinary integral. (iv) The study of noncyclic evolution of a quantum system reduces explicitly to the study of the cyclic evolution. Finally, phase factors and general solution for the driven generalized time-dependent harmonic oscillator are studied as an illustrative example.

Abstract: We study free scalar field theory on a graph, which gives rise to a modified version of discrete Green's function on a graph studied in \cite{CY}. We show that this gives rise to a graph invariant, which is closely related to the 2-dim Weisfeiler-Lehman algorithm for graph isomorphism testing. We complement this invariant by another type of graph invariants, coming from viewing graphs as quadratic forms over the integers. We explain that the combination of these two ideas give rise to an interesting approach to the graph isomorphism problem.
Killing Invariants: An approach to the sub-classification of geometries with symmetry

Abstract:In principle, the local classification of spacetimes is always possible using the Cartan-Karlhede algorithm. However, in practice, the process of determining equivalence of two spacetimes is potentially computationally difficult or not at all possible. This difficulty will arise whenever the classifying invariants are either high-degree rational functions or depend on transcendental functions without standard inverses. In the case that spacetimes admit Killing vectors with non-trivial orbits, we propose a new set of invariant quantities, called Killing invariants. These invariants will allow for the sub-classification of spacetimes admitting the same group of symmetries and will, in principle, be substantially less complicated than any other known set. We apply this approach to the class of static spherically symmetric geometries as an illustrative example.

Abstract:We present the algebraic classification of the gravitational field in four-dimensional general metric-affine geometries, thus extending the current results of the literature in the particular framework of Weyl-Cartan geometry by the presence of the traceless nonmetricity tensor. This quantity switches on four of the eleven fundamental parts of the irreducible representation of the curvature tensor under the pseudo-orthogonal group, in such a way that three of them present similar algebraic types as the ones obtained in Weyl-Cartan geometry, whereas the remaining one includes thirty independent components and gives rise to a new algebraic classification. The latter is derived by means of its principal null directions and their levels of alignment, obtaining a total number of sixteen main algebraic types, which can be split into many subtypes. As an immediate application, we determine the algebraic types of the broadest family of static and spherically symmetric black hole solutions with spin, dilation and shear charges in Metric-Affine Gravity.

Abstract:We study existence of invariant Einstein metrics on complex Stiefel manifolds $G/K = \SU(\ell+m+n)/\SU(n) $ and the special unitary groups $G = \SU(\ell+m+n)$. We decompose the Lie algebra $\frak g$ of $G$ and the tangent space $\frak p$ of $G/K$, by using the generalized flag manifolds $G/H = \SU(\ell+m+n)/\s(\U(\ell)\times\U(m)\times\U(n))$. We parametrize scalar products on the 2-dimensional center of the Lie algebra of $H$, and we consider $G$-invariant and left invariant metrics determined by $\Ad(\s(\U(\ell)\times\U(m)\times\U(n))$-invariant scalar products on $\frak g$ and $\frak p$ respectively. Then we compute their Ricci tensor for such metrics. We prove existence of $\Ad(\s(\U(1)\times\U(2)\times\U(2))$-invariant Einstein metrics on $V_3\bb{C}^{5}=\SU(5)/\SU(2)$, $\Ad(\s(\U(2)\times\U(2)\times\U(2))$-invariant Einstein metrics on $V_4\bb{C}^{6}=\SU(6)/\SU(2)$, and $\Ad(\s(\U(m)\times\U(m)\times\U(n))$-invariant Einstein metrics on $V_{2m}\bb{C}^{2m+n}=\SU(2m+n)/\SU(n)$. We also prove existence of $\Ad(\s(\U(1)\times\U(2)\times\U(2))$-invariant Einstein metrics on the compact Lie group $\SU(5)$, which are not naturally reductive. The Lie group $\SU(5)$ is the special unitary group of smallest rank known for the moment, admitting non naturally reductive Einstein metrics. Finally, we show that the compact Lie group $\SU(4+n)$ admits two non naturally reductive $\Ad(\s(\U(2)\times\U(2)\times\U(n)))$-invariant Einstein metrics for $ 2 \leq n \leq 25$, and four non naturally reductive Einstein metrics for $n\ge 26$. This extends previous results of K.~ Mori about non naturally reductive Einstein metrics on $\SU(4+n)$ ($n \geq 2$).

Abstract:In this paper, we study invariant Einstein metrics on certain compact homogeneous spaces with three isotropy summands. We show that, if G/K is a compact isotropy irreducible space with G and K simple, then except for some very special cases, the coset space G × G =Δ( K ) carries at least two invariant Einstein metrics. Furthermore, in the case that G 1 ; G 2 and K are simple Lie groups, with K ⊂ G 1 ; K ⊂ G 2 , and G 1 ≠ G 2 , such that G 1 / K and G 2 / K are compact isotropy irreducible spaces, we give a complete classification of invariant Einstein metrics on the coset space G 1 × G 2 =Δ( K ).

Abstract:We analyse the geometry of generic Minkowski $\mathcal{N}=1$, $D=4$ flux compactifications in string theory, the default backgrounds for string model building. In M-theory they are the natural string theoretic extensions of $\mathrm{G}_2$ holonomy manifolds. In type II theories, they extend the notion of Calabi--Yau geometry and include the class of flux backgrounds based on generalised complex structures first considered by Graña et al. (GMPT). Using $\mathrm{E}_{7(7)}\times\mathbb{R}^+$ generalised geometry we show that these compactifications are characterised by an $\mathrm{SU}(7)\subset\mathrm{E}_{7(7)}$ structure defining an involutive subbundle of the generalised tangent space, and with a vanishing moment map, corresponding to the action of the diffeomorphism and gauge symmetries of the theory. The Kähler potential on the space of structures defines a natural extension of Hitchin's $\mathrm{G}_2$ functional. Using this framework we are able to count, for the first time, the massless scalar moduli of GMPT solutions in terms of generalised geometry cohomology groups. It also provides an intriguing new perspective on the existence of $G_{2}$ manifolds, suggesting possible connections to Geometrical Invariant Theory and stability.

An analytic invariant of G_2 manifolds

Abstract:We prove that the moduli space of holonomy G_2-metrics on a closed 7-manifold is in general disconnected by presenting a number of explicit examples. We detect different connected components of the G_2-moduli space by defining an integer-valued analytic refinement of the nu-invariant, a Z/48-valued defect invariant of G_2-structures on a closed 7-manifold introduced by the first and third authors. The refined invariant is defined using eta invariants and Mathai-Quillen currents on the 7-manifold and we compute it for twisted connected sums à la Kovalev, Corti-Haskins-Nordström-Pacini and extra-twisted connected sums as constructed by the second and third authors. In particular, we find examples of G_2-holonomy metrics in different components of the moduli space where the associated G_2-structures are homotopic and other examples where they are not.

Abstract:We report new topological invariants in four dimensions that are generalizations of the Nieh-Yan topological invariant. The new topological invariants are obtained through a systematic method along the lines of the one used to get the Nieh-Yan form, but involving an $SO(4,1)$ [$SO(5)$] connection constructed out from an $SO(3,1)$ [$SO(4)$] connection and three $SO(3,1)$ [$SO(4)$] tensor $1$-forms. We give explicit expressions of the new 4-forms that give rise to the new topological invariants for particular choices of these 1-forms and show that the Nieh-Yan form arises as a particular case.

Abstract:In this paper, various kinds of invariants of directed graphs are summarized. In the first topic, the invariant w(G) for a directed graph G is introduced, which is primarily defined by S. Chen and X.M. Chen to solve a problem of weak connectedness of tensor product of two directed graphs. Further, we present our recent studies on the invariant w(G) in categorical view. In the second topic, Homology theory on directed graph is introduced, and we also cast on categorical view of the definition. The third topic mainly focuses on Laplacians on graphs, including traditional work and latest result of 1-laplacian by K.C.Chang. Finally, Zeta functions and Graded graphs are introduced, inclduing Bratteli-Vershik diagram, dual graded graphs and differential posets, with some applications in dynamic system.
A three-manifold invariant from graph configurations

Abstract:The logarithm of the Kontsevich-Kuperberg-Thurston invariant counts embeddings of connected trivalent graphs in an oriented rational homology sphere, using integrals on configuration spaces of points in the given manifold. It is a universal finite type invariant of oriented rational homology spheres. The exponential of this invariant is often called the perturbative expansion of the Chern-Simons theory. In this article, we give an independent original definition of the degree two part of the logarithm of the Kontsevich-Kuperberg-Thurston invariant appropriate for concrete computations. This article can also serve as an introduction to the general definition of the logarithm of the Kontsevich-Kuperberg-Thurston invariant.

Off-shell invariants of linearized $4D, \mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity in the harmonic approach

Abstract:Using the harmonic superspace approach, we construct, at the linearized level, $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric curvatures generalizing scalar curvature, Ricci curvature and Weyl tensor. These supercurvatures are the building blocks of various linearized $4D, \, \mathcal{N}=2$ Einstein supergravity invariants. The supercurvatures involving the scalar and Ricci curvatures are analytic harmonic ${\cal N}=2$ superfields, while the Weyl supertensor is a chiral $\mathcal{N}=2$ superfield. As the basic distinguished feature of our construction, all these objects are expressed through the fundamental analytic gauge prepotentials $h^{++M}, M= (\alpha\dot\alpha, +\alpha, +\dot\alpha, 5)$. The related characteristic features are the heavy use of harmonic derivatives and harmonic zero-curvature equations. On a number of instructive examples, we describe the component reduction of the superfield invariants constructed.

Abstract:Diffeomorphism invariance is often considered to be a hallmark of the theory of general relativity (GR). But closer analysis reveals that this cannot be what makes GR distinctive. The concept of diffeomorphism invariance can be defined in two ways: under the first definition (diff-invariance$_1$), both GR and all other classical spacetime theories turn out to be diffeomorphism invariant, while under the second (diff-invariance$_2$), neither do. Confusion about the matter can be traced to two sources. First, GR is sometimes erroneously thought to embody a "general principle of relativity," which asserts the relativity of all states of motion, and from which it would follow that GR must be diff-invariant$_2$. But GR embodies no such principle, and is easily seen to violate diff-invariance$_2$. Second, GR is unique among spacetime theories in requiring a general-covariant formulation, whereas other classical spacetime theories are typically formulated with respect to a preferred class of global coordinate systems in which their dynamical equations simplify. This makes GR's diffeomorphism invariance (in the sense of diff-invariance$_1$) manifest, while in other spacetime theories it lies latent -- at least in their familiar formulations. I trace this difference back to the fact that the spacetime structure is inhomogeneous within the models of GR, and mutable across its models. I offer a formal criterion for when a spacetime theory possesses immutable spacetime structure, and using this criterion I prove that a theory possesses a preferred class of coordinate systems applicable across its models if and only if it possesses immutable spacetime structure.

Generalized Formalism in Gauge-Invariant Gravitational Perturbations

Abstract:By the use of the gauge-invariant variables proposed by Kodama and Ishibashi, we obtain the most general perturbation equations in the ($m+n$)-dimensional spacetime with a warped product metric. These equations do not depend on the spectral expansions of the Laplace-type operators on the $n$-dimensional Einstein manifold. These equations enable us to have a complete gauge-invariant perturbation theory and a well-defined spectral expansion for all modes, and the gauge invariance is kept for each mode. By studying perturbations of some projections of Weyl tensor in the case of $m=2$, we define three Teukolsky-like gauge-invariant variables and obtain the perturbation equations of these variables by considering the perturbations of the Penrose wave equations in the ($2+n$)-dimensional Einstein spectime. In particular, we find the relations between the Teukolsky-like gauge-invariant variables and the Kodama--Ishibashi gauge-invariant variables. These relations imply that the Kodama--Ishibashi gauge-invariant variables all come from the perturbations of the Weyl tensor of the spacetime.

Abstract:We discuss (arbitrary-dimensional) Lorentzian manifolds and the scalar polynomial curvature invariants constructed from the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives. Recently, we have shown that in four dimensions a Lorentzian spacetime metric is either $\mathcal{I}$-non-degenerate, and hence locally characterized by its scalar polynomial curvature invariants, or is a degenerate Kundt spacetime. We present a number of results that generalize these results to higher dimensions and discuss their consequences and potential physical applications.

Abstract:Motivated by multi-centered black hole solutions of Maxwell-Einstein theories of (super)gravity in D=4 space-time dimensions, we develop some general methods, that can be used to determine all homogeneous invariant polynomials on the irreducible (SL_h(p,R) x G4)-representation (p,R), where p denotes the number of centers, and SL_h(p,R) is the "horizontal" symmetry of the system, acting upon the indices labelling the centers. The black hole electric and magnetic charges sit in the symplectic representation R of the generalized electric-magnetic (U-)duality group G4. We start with an algebraic approach based on classical invariant theory, using Schur polynomials and the Cauchy formula. Then, we perform a geometric analysis, involving Grassmannians, Pluecker coordinates, and exploiting Bott's Theorem. We focus on non-degenerate groups G4 "of type E7" relevant for (super)gravities whose (vector multiplets') scalar manifold is a symmetric space. In the triality-symmetric stu model of N=2 supergravity, we explicitly construct a basis for the 10 linearly independent degree-12 invariant polynomials of 3-centered black holes.

Degrees of Freedom of New General Relativity: Type 2, Type 3, Type 5, and Type 8

Abstract:We investigate the degrees of freedom of new general relativity. This theory is a three-parameter theory and is classified into nine irreducible types according to the rotation symmetry of $SO(3)$ on each leaf of ADM-foliation. In this work, we focus on unveiling the degrees of freedom of the physically interesting types of NGR: Type 2, Type 3, Type 5, and Type 8, which contain the gravitational propagating degrees of freedom. First, we revisit the theory based on the gauge approach to gravity and reformulate the Lagrangian of the theory. Second, we review the irreducible decomposition of the theory while focusing on the Hamiltonian and the primary constraints in each type. Third, we perform the Dirac-Bergmann analysis to unveil the degrees of freedom of the theory in the case of Type 2, Type 3, Type 5, and Type 8. We find a novel new behavior of constraints in Type 8, which is classified as second-class but not to determine any Lagrange multipliers and to provide the gauge invariance of the theory under the satisfaction of a specific condition of the multipliers. The degrees of freedom of Type 2, Type 3, and Type 5 are unveiled as six, five, and seven, respectively. The degrees of freedom of Type 8 is either four under a specific condition to the Lagrange multipliers or six in the generic case. Finally, we conclude this work with several future perspectives.
