Abstract:We present a study of the persistent X-ray emission from the low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636-53 based ont he entire archival EXOSAT ME data set. We per- formed a homogeneous analysis of all five EXOSAT observations in terms of the correlated rapid X-ray variability and X-ray spectral properties by means of power spectra, and colour-colour and hardness-intensity diagrams, respectively. Over the years we find similar patterns in the colour-colour and hardness-intensity diagrams, but small shifts in their postions occur. We find one case of an island-banana transition. On all but one occasion the differences in colour are smaller than 5%. Between the two 'island state' data sets, we find a shift of 8 % in the soft colour, which must be at least partly intrinsic. Clear correlations are present between the X-ray colours (which are governed by the mass accretion rate) and the power spectrum. With increasing mass accretion rate the fractional rms amplitude of the power-law shaped power spectral component that dominates the power spectra below ~1 Hz rises, while the band-limited noise component at higher frequencies drops. The cut-off frequency of the band-limited component increases whn its amplitude decreases. This is reminiscent of the behaviour of black hole candidates in the low state.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to study the correlation between the characteristics of continuous X - ray radiation and its rapid variation behavior in the low - quality X - ray binary system 4U1636−53. Specifically, through a homogeneous analysis of the entire archived EXOSAT ME data set, the author explored the relationship between X - ray spectral characteristics and rapid X - ray variability (represented by power spectra, color - color diagrams, and hardness - intensity diagrams). The main objectives of the study include: 1. **Explore the relationship between X - ray color and power spectrum**: The author analyzed the changes in X - ray color on different time scales and correlated them with the changes in the power spectrum to understand whether these changes are driven by the same physical process. 2. **Identify and describe the changes in X - ray emission patterns**: Through color - color diagrams and hardness - intensity diagrams, the author attempted to identify the X - ray emission patterns of 4U1636−53 during different observation periods and explore how these patterns change over time. 3. **Evaluate whether the observed changes are intrinsic or caused by instrument effects**: By comparing data from different time periods and using the Crab Nebula as a reference standard, the author evaluated whether the observed color and intensity changes are mainly caused by the intrinsic changes of the source itself or are partly or entirely caused by instrument effects. 4. **Understand X - ray behavior in different states**: In particular, the author focused on the transitions between the "island" state and the "banana" state, as well as the characteristics of X - ray behavior in these states, such as the changes in very low - frequency noise (VLFN) and high - frequency noise (HFN) in the power spectrum. Through these analyses, the author hopes to better understand the accretion process in 4U1636−53 and its impact on X - ray emission, thereby providing new insights into the physical mechanisms of similar systems.
