Abstract:Biowaste is biodegradable organic waste from vegetable or animal sources that can be broken down through biological processes. This type of waste is commonly produced in domestic and commercial settings, particularly in the agri-food industry. This review analyses the potential of biowaste as a valuable resource for creating sustainable packaging materials in modern circular economies. The pressing environmental challenges caused by biowaste, exacerbated by population growth and urbanisation, necessitate innovative waste management and resource utilisation approaches. The objectives of this study were to investigate different types of biowaste and their generation processes, and to assess methods for repurposing biowaste for packaging applications. These findings reveal the potential of biowaste to promote sustainable practices in the packaging industry through the extraction and processing of bioresources. The review concludes by highlighting the interconnected aspects contributing to a paradigm shift towards a more resilient, eco-friendly, and economically viable packaging industry. Future perspectives should focus on addressing challenges and fostering continued innovation in biowaste utilisation, advancing circular economic practices, and promoting sustainable packaging solutions for a greener future.
