Abstract:In this paper we show an O(n^(3/2) log^2 n) time algorithm for finding a maximum flow in a planar graph with multiple sources and multiple sinks. This is the fastest algorithm whose running time depends only on the number of vertices in the graph. For general (non-planar) graphs the multiple-source multiple-sink version of the maximum flow problem is as difficult as the standard single-source single-sink version. However, the standard reduction does not preserve the planarity of the graph, and it is not known how to generalize existing maximum flow algorithms for planar graphs to the multiple-source multiple-sink maximum flow problem.

Abstract:We give an $O(k^3 n \log n \min(k,\log^2 n) \log^2(nC))$-time algorithm for computing maximum integer flows in planar graphs with integer arc {\em and vertex} capacities bounded by $C$, and $k$ sources and sinks. This improves by a factor of $\max(k^2,k\log^2 n)$ over the fastest algorithm previously known for this problem [Wang, SODA 2019]. The speedup is obtained by two independent ideas. First we replace an iterative procedure of Wang that uses $O(k)$ invocations of an $O(k^3 n \log^3 n)$-time algorithm for maximum flow algorithm in a planar graph with $k$ apices [Borradaile et al., FOCS 2012, SICOMP 2017], by an alternative procedure that only makes one invocation of the algorithm of Borradaile et al. Second, we show two alternatives for computing flows in the $k$-apex graphs that arise in our modification of Wang's procedure faster than the algorithm of Borradaile et al. In doing so, we introduce and analyze a sequential implementation of the parallel highest-distance push-relabel algorithm of Goldberg and Tarjan~[JACM 1988].

Abstract:We present a linear-time algorithm for simplifying flow networks on directed planar graphs: Given a directed planar graph on $n$ vertices, a source vertex $s$ and a sink vertex $t$, our algorithm removes all the arcs that do not participate in any simple $s,t$-path in linear-time. The output graph produced by our algorithm satisfies the prerequisite needed by the $O(n\log n)$-time algorithm of Weihe [FOCS'94 \& JCSS'97] for computing maximum $s,t$-flow in directed planar graphs. Previously, Weihe's algorithm could not run in $O(n\log n)$-time due to the absence of the preprocessing step; all the preceding algorithms run in $\tilde{\Omega}(n^2)$-time [Misiolek-Chen, COCOON'05 \& IPL'06; Biedl, Brejov{á} and Vinar, MFCS'00]. Consequently, this provides an alternative $O(n\log n)$-time algorithm for computing maximum $s,t$-flow in directed planar graphs in addition to the known $O(n\log n)$-time algorithms [Borradaile-Klein, SODA'06 \& <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://J.ACM" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>'09; Erickson, SODA'10]. Our algorithm can be seen as a (truly) linear-time $s,t$-flow sparsifier for directed planar graphs, which runs faster than any maximum $s,t$-flow algorithm (which can also be seen of as a sparsifier). The simplified structures of the resulting graph might be useful in future developments of maximum $s,t$-flow algorithms in both directed and undirected planar graphs.

Maximum Flow by Augmenting Paths in $n^{2+o(1)}$ Time

Abstract:We present a combinatorial algorithm for computing exact maximum flows in directed graphs with $n$ vertices and edge capacities from $\{1,\dots,U\}$ in $n^{2+o(1)}\log U$ time, which is almost optimal in dense graphs. Our algorithm is a novel implementation of the classical augmenting-path framework; we list augmenting paths more efficiently using a new variant of the push-relabel algorithm that uses additional edge weights to guide the algorithm, and we derive the edge weights by constructing a directed expander hierarchy. Even in unit-capacity graphs, this breaks the long-standing $O(m\cdot\min\{\sqrt{m},n^{2/3}\})$ time bound of the previous combinatorial algorithms by Karzanov (1973) and Even and Tarjan (1975) when the graph has $m=\omega(n^{4/3})$ edges. Notably, our approach does not rely on continuous optimization nor heavy dynamic graph data structures, both of which are crucial in the recent developments that led to the almost-linear time algorithm by Chen et al. (FOCS 2022). Our running time also matches the $n^{2+o(1)}$ time bound of the independent combinatorial algorithm by Chuzhoy and Khanna (STOC 2024) for computing the maximum bipartite matching, a special case of maximum flow.

Abstract:We give an algorithm that computes exact maximum flows and minimum-cost flows on directed graphs with $m$ edges and polynomially bounded integral demands, costs, and capacities in $m^{1+o(1)}$ time. Our algorithm builds the flow through a sequence of $m^{1+o(1)}$ approximate undirected minimum-ratio cycles, each of which is computed and processed in amortized $m^{o(1)}$ time using a new dynamic graph data structure. Our framework extends to algorithms running in $m^{1+o(1)}$ time for computing flows that minimize general edge-separable convex functions to high accuracy. This gives almost-linear time algorithms for several problems including entropy-regularized optimal transport, matrix scaling, $p$-norm flows, and $p$-norm isotonic regression on arbitrary directed acyclic graphs.

Abstract:In this paper we study minimum cut and maximum flow problems on planar graphs, both in static and in dynamic settings. First, we present an algorithm that given an undirected planar graph computes the minimum cut between any two given vertices in O(n log log n) time. Second, we show how to achieve the same O(n log log n) bound for the problem of computing maximum flows in undirected planar graphs. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first algorithms for those two problems that break the O(n log n) barrier, which has been standing for more than 25 years. Third, we present a fully dynamic algorithm that is able to maintain information about minimum cuts and maximum flows in a plane graph (i.e., a planar graph with a fixed embedding): our algorithm is able to insert edges, delete edges and answer min-cut and max-flow queries between any pair of vertices in O(n^(2/3) log^3 n) time per operation. This result is based on a new dynamic shortest path algorithm for planar graphs which may be of independent interest. We remark that this is the first known non-trivial algorithm for min-cut and max-flow problems in a dynamic setting.

Abstract:In this paper we give an $\widetilde{O}((nm)^{2/3}\log C)$ time algorithm for computing min-cost flow (or min-cost circulation) in unit capacity planar multigraphs where edge costs are integers bounded by $C$. For planar multigraphs, this improves upon the best known algorithms for general graphs: the $\widetilde{O}(m^{10/7}\log C)$ time algorithm of Cohen et al. [SODA 2017], the $O(m^{3/2}\log(nC))$ time algorithm of Gabow and Tarjan [SIAM J. Comput. 1989] and the $\widetilde{O}(\sqrt{n}m \log C)$ time algorithm of Lee and Sidford [FOCS 2014]. In particular, our result constitutes the first known fully combinatorial algorithm that breaks the $\widetilde{O}(m^{3/2})$ time barrier for min-cost flow problem in planar graphs. To obtain our result we first give a very simple successive shortest paths based scaling algorithm for unit-capacity min-cost flow problem that does not explicitly operate on dual variables. This algorithm also runs in $\widetilde{O}(m^{3/2}\log{C})$ time for general graphs, and, to the best of our knowledge, it has not been described before. We subsequently show how to implement this algorithm faster on planar graphs using well-established tools: $r$-divisions and efficient algorithms for computing (shortest) paths in so-called dense distance graphs.

Max $s,t$-Flow Oracles and Negative Cycle Detection in Planar Digraphs

Abstract:We study the maximum $s,t$-flow oracle problem on planar directed graphs where the goal is to design a data structure answering max $s,t$-flow value (or equivalently, min $s,t$-cut value) queries for arbitrary source-target pairs $(s,t)$. For the case of polynomially bounded integer edge capacities, we describe an exact max $s,t$-flow oracle with truly subquadratic space and preprocessing, and sublinear query time. Moreover, if $(1-\epsilon)$-approximate answers are acceptable, we obtain a static oracle with near-linear preprocessing and $\tilde{O}(n^{3/4})$ query time and a dynamic oracle supporting edge capacity updates and queries in $\tilde{O}(n^{6/7})$ worst-case time. To the best of our knowledge, for directed planar graphs, no (approximate) max $s,t$-flow oracles have been described even in the unweighted case, and only trivial tradeoffs involving either no preprocessing or precomputing all the $n^2$ possible answers have been known. One key technical tool we develop on the way is a sublinear (in the number of edges) algorithm for finding a negative cycle in so-called dense distance graphs. By plugging it in earlier frameworks, we obtain improved bounds for other fundamental problems on planar digraphs. In particular, we show: (1) a deterministic $O(n\log(nC))$ time algorithm for negatively-weighted SSSP in planar digraphs with integer edge weights at least $-C$. This improves upon the previously known bounds in the important case of weights polynomial in $n$, and (2) an improved $O(n\log{n})$ bound on finding a perfect matching in a bipartite planar graph.

Abstract:We give an algorithm to find a mincut in an $n$-vertex, $m$-edge weighted directed graph using $\tilde O(\sqrt{n})$ calls to any maxflow subroutine. Using state of the art maxflow algorithms, this yields a directed mincut algorithm that runs in $\tilde O(m\sqrt{n} + n^2)$ time. This improves on the 30 year old bound of $\tilde O(mn)$ obtained by Hao and Orlin for this problem.

Distributed Maximum Flow in Planar Graphs

Abstract:The dual of a planar graph $G$ is a planar graph $G^*$ that has a vertex for each face of $G$ and an edge for each pair of adjacent faces of $G$. The profound relationship between a planar graph and its dual has been the algorithmic basis for solving numerous (centralized) classical problems on planar graphs. In the distributed setting however, the only use of planar duality is for finding a recursive decomposition of $G$ [DISC 2017, STOC 2019]. We extend the distributed algorithmic toolkit to work on the dual graph $G^*$. These tools can then facilitate various algorithms on $G$ by solving a suitable dual problem on $G^*$. Given a directed planar graph $G$ with positive and negative edge-lengths and hop-diameter $D$, our key result is an $\tilde{O}(D^2)$-round algorithm for Single Source Shortest Paths on $G^*$, which then implies an $\tilde{O}(D^2)$-round algorithm for Maximum $st$-Flow on $G$. Prior to our work, no $\tilde{O}(\text{poly}(D))$-round algorithm was known for Maximum $st$-Flow. We further obtain a $D\cdot n^{o(1)}$-rounds $(1-\epsilon)$-approximation algorithm for Maximum $st$-Flow on $G$ when $G$ is undirected and $st$-planar. Finally, we give a near optimal $\tilde O(D)$-round algorithm for computing the weighted girth of $G$. The main challenges in our work are that $G^*$ is not the communication graph (e.g., a vertex of $G$ is mapped to multiple vertices of $G^*$), and that the diameter of $G^*$ can be much larger than $D$ (i.e., possibly by a linear factor). We overcome these challenges by carefully defining and maintaining subgraphs of the dual graph $G^*$ while applying the recursive decomposition on the primal graph $G$. The main technical difficulty, is that along the recursive decomposition, a face of $G$ gets shattered into (disconnected) components yet we still need to treat it as a dual node.

Computing Maximum Flow with Augmenting Electrical Flows

Abstract:We present an $\tilde{O}\left(m^{\frac{10}{7}}U^{\frac{1}{7}}\right)$-time algorithm for the maximum $s$-$t$ flow problem and the minimum $s$-$t$ cut problem in directed graphs with $m$ arcs and largest integer capacity $U$. This matches the running time of the $\tilde{O}\left((mU)^{\frac{10}{7}}\right)$-time algorithm of Mądry (FOCS 2013) in the unit-capacity case, and improves over it, as well as over the $\tilde{O}\left(m \sqrt{n} \log U\right)$-time algorithm of Lee and Sidford (FOCS 2014), whenever $U$ is moderately large and the graph is sufficiently sparse. By well-known reductions, this also gives similar running time improvements for the maximum-cardinality bipartite $b$-matching problem. One of the advantages of our algorithm is that it is significantly simpler than the ones presented in Madry (FOCS 2013) and Lee and Sidford (FOCS 2014). In particular, these algorithms employ a sophisticated interior-point method framework, while our algorithm is cast directly in the classic augmenting path setting that almost all the combinatorial maximum flow algorithms use. At a high level, the presented algorithm takes a primal dual approach in which each iteration uses electrical flows computations both to find an augmenting $s$-$t$ flow in the current residual graph and to update the dual solution. We show that by maintain certain careful coupling of these primal and dual solutions we are always guaranteed to make significant progress.

Abstract:We investigate the problem of designing a minimum cost flow network interconnecting n sources and a single sink, each with known locations and flows. The network may contain other unprescribed nodes, known as Steiner points. For concave increasing cost functions, a minimum cost network of this sort has a tree topology, and hence can be called a Minimum Gilbert Arborescence (MGA). We characterise the local topological structure of Steiner points in MGAs for linear cost functions. This problem has applications to the design of drains, gas pipelines and underground mine access.

On the Quickest Flow Problem in Dynamic Networks: a Parametric Min-Cost Flow Approach

Abstract:We consider the quickest flow problem in dynamic networks with a single source s and a single sink t: given an amount of flow F, find the minimum time needed to send it from s to t, and the corresponding optimal flow over time. We introduce new mathematical formulations and derive optimality conditions for the quickest flow problem. Based on the optimality conditions, we develop a new cost-scaling algorithm that leverages the parametric nature of the problem. The algorithm solves the quickest flow problem with integer arc costs in O(nm log(n2/m) log(nC)) time, where n, m, and C are the number of nodes, arcs, and the maximum arc cost, respectively. Our algorithm runs in the same time bound as the cost-scaling algorithm by Goldberg and Tarjan [10, 11] for solving the min-cost flow problem. This result shows for the first time that the quickest flow problem can be solved within the same time bound as one of the fastest algorithms for the min-cost flow problem. As a consequence, our algorithm will remain one of the fastest unless the quickest flow problem can be shown to be simpler than the min-cost flow problem.
(Almost) Ruling Out SETH Lower Bounds for All-Pairs Max-Flow

Abstract:The All-Pairs Max-Flow problem has gained significant popularity in the last two decades, and many results are known regarding its fine-grained complexity. Despite this, wide gaps remain in our understanding of the time complexity for several basic variants of the problem. In this paper, we aim to bridge this gap by providing algorithms, conditional lower bounds, and non-reducibility results. Our main result is that for most problem settings, deterministic reductions based on the Strong Exponential Time Hypothesis (SETH) cannot rule out $n^{4-o(1)}$ time algorithms under a hypothesis called NSETH. In particular, to obtain our result for the setting of undirected graphs with unit node-capacities, we design a new randomized $O(m^{2+o(1)})$ time combinatorial algorithm, improving on the recent $O(m^{11/5+o(1)})$ time algorithm [Huang et al., STOC 2023] and matching their $m^{2-o(1)}$ lower bound (up to subpolynomial factors), thus essentially settling the time complexity for this setting of the problem. More generally, our main technical contribution is the insight that $st$-cuts can be verified quickly, and that in most settings, $st$-flows can be shipped succinctly (i.e., with respect to the flow support). This is a key idea in our non-reducibility results, and it may be of independent interest.

Abstract:This paper gives the first o(n2.5) deterministic algorithm for the maximum flow problem in any undirected unit-capacity graph with no parallel edges. In an n-vertex, m-edge graph with maximum flow value v, our running time is Õ(n9/4v1/8) = Õ(n2.375). Note that v ≤ n for simple unit-capacity graphs. The previous deterministic algorithms [Karger and Levine 1998] achieve O(m+nv3/2) and O(nm2/3v1/6) time bound, which are both O(n2.5) for dense simple graphs and v = Θ(n).
Deterministic Minimum Steiner Cut in Maximum Flow Time

Abstract:We devise a deterministic algorithm for minimum Steiner cut, which uses $(\log n)^{O(1)}$ maximum flow calls and additional near-linear time. This algorithm improves on Li and Panigrahi's (FOCS 2020) algorithm, which uses $(\log n)^{O(1/\epsilon^4)}$ maximum flow calls and additional $O(m^{1+\epsilon})$ time, for $\epsilon > 0$. Our algorithm thus shows that deterministic minimum Steiner cut can be solved in maximum flow time up to polylogarithmic factors, given any black-box deterministic maximum flow algorithm. Our main technical contribution is a novel deterministic graph decomposition method for terminal vertices that generalizes all existing $s$-strong partitioning methods, which we believe may have future applications.

Single-Source Bottleneck Path Algorithm Faster Than Sorting for Sparse Graphs

Abstract:In a directed graph $G=(V,E)$ with a capacity on every edge, a \emph{bottleneck path} (or \emph{widest path}) between two vertices is a path maximizing the minimum capacity of edges in the path. For the single-source all-destination version of this problem in directed graphs, the previous best algorithm runs in $O(m+n\log n)$ ($m=|E|$ and $n=|V|$) time, by Dijkstra search with Fibonacci heap [Fredman and Tarjan 1987]. We improve this time bound to $O(m\sqrt{\log n})$, thus it is the first algorithm which breaks the time bound of classic Fibonacci heap when $m=o(n\sqrt{\log n})$. It is a Las-Vegas randomized approach. By contrast, the s-t bottleneck path has an algorithm with running time $O(m\beta(m,n))$ [Chechik et al. 2016], where $\beta(m,n)=\min\{k\geq 1: \log^{(k)}n\leq\frac{m}{n}\}$.
Computing Maximum Flows in Undirected Planar Networks with Both Edge and Vertex Capacities

Abstract:We study the maximum flow problem in an undirected planar network with both edge and vertex capacities (EVC-network). A previous study reduces the minimum cut problem in an undirected planar EVC-network to the minimum edge-cut problem in another planar network with edge capacity only (EC-network), thus the minimum-cut or the maximum flow value can be computed in O(nlogn) time. Based on this reduction, in this paper we devise an O(nlogn) time algorithm for computing the maximum flow in an undirected general planar EVC-network and an O(n) time algorithm for computing the maximum flow in an undirected (s,t)-planar EVC-network. As a result, the maximum flow problem in undirected planar EVC-networks is as easy as the problem in undirected planar EC-networks in terms of computational complexity.
Incremental Approximate Maximum Flow on Undirected Graphs in Subpolynomial Update Time

Abstract:We provide an algorithm which, with high probability, maintains a $(1-\epsilon)$-approximate maximum flow on an undirected graph undergoing $m$-edge additions in amortized $m^{o(1)} \epsilon^{-3}$ time per update. To obtain this result, we provide a more general algorithm that solves what we call the incremental, thresholded $p$-norm flow problem that asks to determine the first edge-insertion in an undirected graph that causes the minimum $\ell_p$-norm flow to decrease below a given threshold in value. Since we solve this thresholded problem, our data structure succeeds against an adaptive adversary that can only see the data structure's output. Furthermore, since our algorithm holds for $p = 2$, we obtain improved algorithms for dynamically maintaining the effective resistance between a pair of vertices in an undirected graph undergoing edge insertions. Our algorithm builds upon previous dynamic algorithms for approximately solving the minimum-ratio cycle problem that underlie previous advances on the maximum flow problem [Chen-Kyng-Liu-Peng-Probst Gutenberg-Sachdeva, FOCS '22] as well as recent dynamic maximum flow algorithms [v.d.Brand-Liu-Sidford, STOC '23]. Instead of using interior point methods, which were a key component of these recent advances, our algorithm uses an optimization method based on $\ell_p$-norm iterative refinement and the multiplicative weight update method. This ensures a monotonicity property in the minimum-ratio cycle subproblems that allows us to apply known data structures and bypass issues arising from adaptive queries.
