Abstract:Vegetation greenness has been increasing globally since at least 1981, when satellite technology enabled large-scale vegetation monitoring. The greening phenomenon, together with warming, sea-level rise and sea-ice decline, represents highly credible evidence of anthropogenic climate change. In this Review, we examine the detection of the greening signal, its causes and its consequences. Greening is pronounced over intensively farmed or afforested areas, such as in China and India, reflecting human activities. However, strong greening also occurs in biomes with low human footprint, such as the Arctic, where global change drivers play a dominant role. Vegetation models suggest that CO2 fertilization is the main driver of greening on the global scale, with other factors being notable at the regional scale. Modelling indicates that greening could mitigate global warming by increasing the carbon sink on land and altering biogeophysical processes, mainly evaporative cooling. Coupling high temporal and fine spatial resolution remote-sensing observations with ground measurements, increasing sampling in the tropics and Arctic, and modelling Earth systems in more detail will further our insights into the greening of Earth.
Stronger increases but greater variability in global mangrove productivity compared to that of adjacent terrestrial forests

Abstract:Mangrove forests are a highly productive ecosystem with important potential to offset anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Mangroves are expected to respond differently to climate change compared to terrestrial forests owing to their location in the tidal environment and unique ecophysiological characteristics, but the magnitude of difference remains uncertain at the global scale. Here we use satellite observations to examine mean trends and interannual variability in the productivity of global mangrove forests and nearby terrestrial evergreen broadleaf forests from 2001 to 2020. Although both types of ecosystem experienced significant recent increases in productivity, mangroves exhibited a stronger increasing trend and greater interannual variability in productivity than evergreen broadleaf forests on three-quarters of their co-occurring coasts. The difference in productivity trends is attributed to the stronger CO 2 fertilization effect on mangrove photosynthesis, while the discrepancy in interannual variability is attributed to the higher sensitivities to variations in precipitation and sea level. Our results indicate that mangroves will have a faster increase in productivity than terrestrial forests in a CO 2 -rich future but may suffer more from deficits in water availability, highlighting a key difference between terrestrial and tidal ecosystems in their responses to climate change.

Abstract:The Antarctic Peninsula has experienced considerable anthropogenic warming in recent decades. While cryospheric responses are well defined, the responses of moss-dominated terrestrial ecosystems have not been quantified. Analysis of Landsat archives (1986–2021) using a Google Earth Engine cloud-processing workflow suggest widespread greening across the Antarctic Peninsula. The area of likely vegetation cover increased from 0.863 km 2 in 1986 to 11.947 km 2 in 2021, with an accelerated rate of change in recent years (2016–2021: 0.424 km 2 yr −1 ) relative to the study period (1986–2021: 0.317 km 2 yr −1 ). This trend echoes a wider pattern of greening in cold-climate ecosystems in response to recent warming, suggesting future widespread changes in the Antarctic Peninsula's terrestrial ecosystems and their long-term functioning.

Abstract:Global terrestrial vegetation dynamics have been rapidly altered by climate change. A widespread vegetation greenness over a large part of the planet from the 1980s to early this century has been reported, whereas weakening of CO2 fertilization effects and increasing climate extremes and the adverse impact of increasing rate of warming and severity of drought on vegetation growth were also reported. Earth system models project that the land carbon sink will decrease in size in response to an increase in warming during this century. How global vegetation is changing during this century in response to global warming and water availability across spatial and temporal scales remains uncertain. Our understanding of the widespread vegetation greening or browning processes and identifying the biogeochemical mechanisms remain incomplete. Here we use multiple long‐term satellite leaf area index (LAI) records to investigate vegetation growth trends from1982 to 2018. We find that the widespread increase of growing‐season integrated LAI (greening) since 1980's was reversed (p‐value 45oN). Overall, the reversal of greening trend since 2000 weakened the negative feedback of carbon sequestration on the climatic system and should be considered in the strategies for climate warming mitigation and adaptation. Our findings of the diversity of processes that drive browning across bioclimatic‐zones and ecosystems and of how those driving processes are changing would enhance our ability to project global future vegetation change and its climatic and abiotic consequences.

Abstract:Mangrove forest is a critical primary producer, biological habitat, and carbon sink in the subtropical-tropical coast zone, and the natural variation of mangrove coverage deserves study for a better understanding of the dynamics of mangrove coastal evolution. In this study, multispectral Landsat images from 1985 to 2018 are used to reconstruct the change in the coverage of mangrove (dominant species is Aegiceras corniculatum ) and salt marsh (dominant species is Cyperus malaccensis ) in the Nanliu River estuary. Tidal flat elevation measuring and 210 Pb dating is used to study the substrate elevation when mangroves first colonize salt marsh. Historical temperature records, river discharge records, and the time series N/P concentration in sediment are analyzed. It is found that the mangrove forests have expanded rapidly in salt marsh since the mid-1980s. The change in factors such as accommodation space, cold event frequency, and nutrient supply cannot explain the origin of mangrove expansion. A low river discharge episode lasting for 8 years since 1986 is considered to have triggered the mangrove expansion in this area, as previously established salt marsh plants died due to germination restriction caused by high salinity and mangroves colonized the salt marsh habitat during this period. This case proves again that estuarine wetlands are very sensitive to salinity variation.

Abstract:Climate warming in northern high latitudes has progressed twice as fast as the global average, leading to prominent but puzzling changes in vegetation structure and functioning of tundra and boreal ecosystems. While some regions are becoming greener, others have lost or shifted vegetation condition as indicated by a browning signal. The mechanisms underlying this 'greening or browning enigma' remain poorly understood. Here we use multi-sourced time-series of satellite-derived vegetation indices to reveal that spectral greening is associated with reductions in surface water cover (i.e. fraction of surface water bodies), whereas spectral browning is linked to increases in surface water cover. These patterns are consistently observed from both 30 m resolution Landsat data and 250 m resolution MODIS data on the basis of grid cells sized of 1, 2 and 4 km. Our study provides, to our knowledge, the first biome-scale demonstration that interactions between vegetation condition and water cover change can explain the contrasting trajectories of ecosystem dynamics across the northern high latitudes in response to climate warming. These divergent trajectories we identified have major implications for ecosystem functioning, carbon sequestration and feedbacks to the climate system. Further unraveling the interaction between vegetation and surface water will be essential if we are to understand the fate of tundra and boreal biomes in a warming climate.

Abstract:Under the synergistic influence of global climate change and rapid urbanization, the conservation of mangrove wetlands is facing great challenges. Accordingly, mangrove wetland management and protection requires investigating the covered area, distribution, and dynamic changes of mangrove wetlands during different periods. In this study, we detected changes of mangroves and analyzed their driving-factors in Pearl River Estuary (Shenzhen Bay and Qi'ao Island) from Landsat images and field work during the period of 1990–2020 using long short-term memory neural network (LSTM) method. The combination of spectral information and texture information yielded high-precision mangrove interpretation results when extracting mangrove areas from remote sensing data, and the LSTM method has the better interpretation effect compared with the random forest (RF) method. Furthermore, based on the interpretation results for the mangroves, this study analyzed dynamic changes in mangrove area and its distribution in Shenzhen Bay and Qi'ao Island from 1990 to 2020 and showed that the overall mangrove area displayed an increasing trend in the past 30 years, with increasing landscape dominance and strong cohesion, mainly due to the ecological restoration projects, and the rapid growth of mangrove area from 2010 to 2015 may be related to rising temperature. However, the cumulative effect of natural factors (precipitation and sea level rise) may cause the growth rate of mangrove area to tend to decrease.

Abstract:Satellite records combined with global ecosystem models show a persistent and widespread greening over 25–50% of the global vegetated area; less than 4% of the globe is browning. CO2 fertilization explains 70% of the observed greening trend. Global environmental change is rapidly altering the dynamics of terrestrial vegetation, with consequences for the functioning of the Earth system and provision of ecosystem services1,2. Yet how global vegetation is responding to the changing environment is not well established. Here we use three long-term satellite leaf area index (LAI) records and ten global ecosystem models to investigate four key drivers of LAI trends during 1982–2009. We show a persistent and widespread increase of growing season integrated LAI (greening) over 25% to 50% of the global vegetated area, whereas less than 4% of the globe shows decreasing LAI (browning). Factorial simulations with multiple global ecosystem models suggest that CO2 fertilization effects explain 70% of the observed greening trend, followed by nitrogen deposition (9%), climate change (8%) and land cover change (LCC) (4%). CO2 fertilization effects explain most of the greening trends in the tropics, whereas climate change resulted in greening of the high latitudes and the Tibetan Plateau. LCC contributed most to the regional greening observed in southeast China and the eastern United States. The regional effects of unexplained factors suggest that the next generation of ecosystem models will need to explore the impacts of forest demography, differences in regional management intensities for cropland and pastures, and other emerging productivity constraints such as phosphorus availability.
Climate-induced Tree-Mortality Pulses Are Obscured by Broad-Scale and Long-Term Greening

Abstract:Vegetation greening has been suggested to be a dominant trend over recent decades, but severe pulses of tree mortality in forests after droughts and heatwaves have also been extensively reported. These observations raise the question of to what extent the observed severe pulses of tree mortality induced by climate could affect overall vegetation greenness across spatial grains and temporal extents. To address this issue, here we analyse three satellite-based datasets of detrended growing-season normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI GS ) with spatial resolutions ranging from 30 m to 8 km for 1,303 field-documented sites experiencing severe drought- or heat-induced tree-mortality events around the globe. We find that severe tree-mortality events have distinctive but localized imprints on vegetation greenness over annual timescales, which are obscured by broad-scale and long-term greening. Specifically, although anomalies in NDVI GS (ΔNDVI) are negative during tree-mortality years, this reduction diminishes at coarser spatial resolutions (that is, 250 m and 8 km). Notably, tree-mortality-induced reductions in NDVI GS (|ΔNDVI|) at 30-m resolution are negatively related to native plant species richness and forest height, whereas topographic heterogeneity is the major factor affecting ΔNDVI differences across various spatial grain sizes. Over time periods of a decade or longer, greening consistently dominates all spatial resolutions. The findings underscore the fundamental importance of spatio-temporal scales for cohesively understanding the effects of climate change on forest productivity and tree mortality under both gradual and abrupt changes.

Abstract:Mangroves, highly efficient ecosystems in sequestering CO2, are strongly impacted by climate change. The lack of long-term observation in mangroves hinders the evaluation of seasonal and inter-annual variability in carbon and water fluxes and their responses to various environmental drivers. In this study, we measured net ecosystem CO2 exchange and evapotranspiration between the atmosphere and subtropical mangroves using the eddy covariance technique over a decade (2010-2019) in southern China. This mangrove forest acted as a strong CO2 sink, with annual net ecosystem production (NEP) ranging from 622.5 to 832.8 g C m(-2) year(-1). The annual evapotranspiration (ET) varied between 934.6 and 1004.9 mm year(-1). During the study period, ET consistently remained higher in the wet season (May to October) compared to the dry season, while NEP did not exhibit consistent seasonal variation. Path analysis indicated that during the dry season, NEP was primarily influenced by global solar radiation and vapor pressure deficit. However, in the wet season, NEP was regulated by a combination of global solar radiation, vapor pressure deficit, air temperature, and tidal inundation time. Additionally, the promoting effect of global solar radiation on NEP decreased in the wet season, while the inhibitory influences of higher temperature and vapor pressure deficit on NEP intensified during the period. Unlike NEP, the dominant factors affecting ET (global solar radiation, air temperature, and vapor pressure deficit) and their intensities remained relatively consistent during both seasons. Furthermore, the relative importance of global solar radiation on NEP and ET increased over the decade, while the influence of tidal inundation time diminished. This study not only improves the understanding of the response of subtropical mangroves to climate change but also provides a valuable benchmark dataset to validate the interannual variability of mangrove carbon and water fluxes estimated from the models.
Quantifying how changing mangrove cover affects ecosystem carbon storage in coastal wetlands

Abstract:Despite overall global declines, mangroves are expanding into and within many subtropical wetlands, leading to heterogeneous cover of marsh-mangrove coastal vegetation communities near the poleward edge of mangroves' ranges. Coastal wetlands are globally important carbon sinks, yet the effects of shifts in mangrove cover on organic-carbon (OC) storage remains uncertain. We experimentally maintained black mangrove (Avicennia germinans) or marsh vegetation in patches (n = 1,120, 3 × 3 m) along a gradient in mangrove cover (0-100%) within coastal wetland plots (n = 10, 24 × 42 m) and measured changes in OC stocks and fluxes. Within patches, above and belowground biomass (OC) was 1,630% and 61% greater for mangroves than for recolonized marshes, and soil OC was 30% greater beneath mangrove than marsh vegetation. At the plot scale, above and belowground biomass increased linearly with mangrove cover but soil OC was highly variable and unrelated to mangrove cover. Root ingrowth was not different in mangrove or marsh patches, nor did it change with mangrove cover. After 11 months, surface OC accretion was negatively related to plot-scale mangrove cover following a high-wrack deposition period. However, after 22 months, accretion was 54% higher in mangrove patches, and there was no relationship to plot-scale mangrove cover. Marsh (Batis maritima) leaf and root litter had 1,000% and 35% faster breakdown rates (k) than mangrove (A. germinans) leaf and root litter. Soil temperatures beneath mangroves were 1.4°C lower, decreasing aboveground k of fast- (cellulose) and slow-decomposing (wood) standard substrates. Wood k in shallow soil (0-15 cm) was higher in mangrove than marsh patches, but vegetation identity did not impact k in deeper soil (15-30 cm). We found that mangrove cover enhanced OC storage by increasing biomass, creating more recalcitrant organic matter and reducing k on the soil surface by altering microclimate, despite increasing wood k belowground and decreasing allochthonous OC subsidies. Our results illustrate the importance of mangroves in maintaining coastal OC storage, but also indicate that the impacts of vegetation change on OC storage may vary based on ecosystem conditions, organic-matter sources, and the relative spatiotemporal scales of mangrove vegetation change.

Abstract:Abstract Vegetation change can alter surface energy balance and subsequently affect the local climate. This biophysical impact has been well studied for forestation cases, but the sign and magnitude for persistent earth greening remain controversial. Based on long-term remote sensing observations, we quantify the unidirectional impact of vegetation greening on radiometric surface temperature over 2001–2018. Here, we show a global negative temperature response with large spatial and seasonal variability. Snow cover, vegetation greenness, and shortwave radiation are the major driving factors of the temperature sensitivity by regulating the relative dominance of radiative and non-radiative processes. Combined with the observed greening trend, we find a global cooling of −0.018 K/decade, which slows down 4.6 ± 3.2% of the global warming. Regionally, this cooling effect can offset 39.4 ± 13.9% and 19.0 ± 8.2% of the corresponding warming in India and China. These results highlight the necessity of considering this vegetation-related biophysical climate effect when informing local climate adaptation strategies.

Abstract:Terrestrial vegetation is a crucial component of Earth's biosphere, regulating global carbon and water cycles and contributing to human welfare. Despite an overall greening trend, terrestrial vegetation exhibits a significant inter-annual variability. The mechanisms driving this variability, particularly those related to climatic and anthropogenic factors, remain poorly understood, which hampers our ability to project the long-term sustainability of ecosystem services. Here, by leveraging diverse remote sensing measurements, we pinpointed 2020 as a historic landmark, registering as the greenest year in modern satellite records from 2001 to 2020. Using ensemble machine learning and Earth system models, we found this exceptional greening primarily stemmed from consistent growth in boreal and temperate vegetation, attributed to rising CO2 levels, climate warming, and reforestation efforts, alongside a transient tropical green-up linked to the enhanced rainfall. Contrary to expectations, the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns had a limited impact on this global greening anomaly. Our findings highlight the resilience and dynamic nature of global vegetation in response to diverse climatic and anthropogenic influences, offering valuable insights for optimizing ecosystem management and informing climate mitigation strategies.

Abstract:Mangrove forests are pivotal in mitigating climate change impacts due to their exceptional carbon sequestration capabilities and their role as carbon sinks. Mangroves are designated blue zones, storing two to four times more carbon dioxide than global rates observed in mature tropical forests. This study utilizes both radar (Sentinel 1) and optical (Sentinel 2) remote sensing datasets. It compares various machine learning algorithms, such as Random Forest, SVM, and CART, to predict the mangrove distribution and allometric equations to estimate the aboveground biomass and the amount of carbon sequestration for the Sundarbans mangrove forest without requiring time-consuming field measurements. It was found that the Random Forest machine learning classifier yielded the highest accuracy of 0.984 with a Kappa metric of 0.962. Using this classifier, the aboveground biomass was calculated to be 125 Mg/ha and the amount of carbon sequestration was 257 Mg/ha per year. The aboveground biomass found was consistent with prior studies using traditional field work. The carbon sequestration values will aid in highlighting the importance of mangroves as blue-carbon storages and help in accurately monitoring and preserving these vital ecosystems efficiently on a global scale.

Abstract:Mangrove forests, distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world, are in a constant flux. They provide important ecosystem goods and services to nature and society. In recent years, the carbon sequestration potential and protective role of mangrove forests from natural disasters is being highlighted as an effective option for climate change adaptation and mitigation. The forests are under threat from both natural and anthropogenic forces. However, accurate, reliable, and timely information of the distribution and dynamics of mangrove forests of the world is not readily available. Recent developments in the availability and accessibility of remotely sensed data, advancement in image pre-processing and classification algorithms, significant improvement in computing, availability of expertise in handling remotely sensed data, and an increasing awareness of the applicability of remote sensing products has greatly improved our scientific understanding of changing mangrove forest cover attributes. As reported in this special issue, the use of both optical and radar satellite data at various spatial resolutions (i.e., 1 m to 30 m) to derive meaningful forest cover attributes (e.g., species discrimination, above ground biomass) is on the rise. This multi-sensor trend is likely to continue into the future providing a more complete inventory of global mangrove forest distributions and attribute inventories at enhanced temporal frequency. The papers presented in this “Special Issue” provide important remote sensing monitoring advancements needed to meet future scientific objectives for global mangrove forest monitoring from local to global scales.

Abstract:As a developing country, China’s mangrove landscape pattern has undergone significant temporal and spatial changes over the last four decades. However, we know little about the changes in the mangrove landscape pattern characteristics other than the area at the national scale. The analysis of mangrove landscape pattern changes from different perspectives on a national scale can provide scientific support for mangrove protection and restoration. In this study, the temporal and spatial changes in the pattern of the mangrove landscape over the last 40 years in China were analyzed based on remote sensing data with high classification accuracy (99.3% of 2018). First, according to the natural geographical conditions of the coastal zone and the distribution of the mangroves, the distribution area of the mangroves in China was divided into 31 natural shores. Then, by selecting representative landscape indexes and constructing an integrated landscape index, the spatial-temporal changes in the landscape pattern of China’s mangroves over the last 40 years were analyzed based on five perspectives: Total area change, shape complexity, connectivity, fragmentation, and the integrated state of the landscape. From a temporal viewpoint, before 2000, the total area of each shore exhibited a downward trend, and the degree of connectivity deteriorated continuously, but the degree of fragmentation was stable at a low level. After 2000, although the total area improved, the degree of fragmentation gradually increased. The spatial changes are mainly reflected by the fact that the shores in Guangdong and Hainan exhibited significant differences within the same province. Based on the above analysis, corresponding scientific suggestions are proposed from temporal and spatial viewpoints to provide guidance for mangrove management and protection in China and to provide a reference for mangrove research in other regions of the world.

Evidence of Carbon Uptake Associated with Vegetation Greening Trends in Eastern China

Abstract:Persistent and widespread increase of vegetation cover, identified as greening, has been observed in areas of the planet over late 20th century and early 21st century by satellite-derived vegetation indices. It is difficult to verify whether these regions are net carbon sinks or sources by studying vegetation indices alone. In this study, we investigate greening trends in Eastern China (EC) and corresponding trends in atmospheric CO2 concentrations. We used multiple vegetation indices including NDVI and EVI to characterize changes in vegetation activity over EC from 2003 to 2016. Gap-filled time series of column-averaged CO2 dry air mole fraction (XCO2) from January 2003 to May 2016, based on observations from SCIAMACHY, GOSAT, and OCO-2 satellites, were used to calculate XCO2 changes during growing season for 13 years. We derived a relationship between XCO2 and surface net CO2 fluxes from two inversion model simulations, CarbonTracker and Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate (MACC), and used those relationships to estimate the biospheric CO2 flux enhancement based on satellite observed XCO2 changes. We observed significant growing period (GP) greening trends in NDVI and EVI related to cropland intensification and forest growth in the region. After removing the influence of large urban center CO2 emissions, we estimated an enhanced XCO2 drawdown during the GP of −0.070 to −0.084 ppm yr−1. Increased carbon uptake during the GP was estimated to be 28.41 to 46.04 Tg C, mainly from land management, which could offset about 2–3% of EC’s annual fossil fuel emissions. These results show the potential of using multi-satellite observed XCO2 to estimate carbon fluxes from the regional biosphere, which could be used to verify natural sinks included as national contributions of greenhouse gas emissions reduction in international climate change agreements like the UNFCC Paris Accord.

Abstract:Coastal mangrove wetlands experience unique land-sea interactions including periodical tidal activity and land/sea breeze cycle. However, the influence of tidal and sea breeze activity on net ecosystem exchange of carbon dioxide (NEE) between mangrove and the atmosphere has not yet been investigated. In this study, temporal variations in mangrove-atmospheric NEE and its direct and indirect environmental controls were examined based on a three-year dataset of continuous eddy covariance and auxiliary measurements in a subtropical estuarine mangrove wetland of southeastern China. The results showed this mangrove wetland acted as a consistent carbon sink over the three-year period (mean NEE of -1233 g C m-2 year-1) with the strongest carbon sink capacity in spring, and the impacts of environmental factors on mangrove NEE varied across time scales: (1) half-hourly daytime carbon influx was regulated by photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) with down-regulation effects from high temperature and vapor pressure deficit (VPD), while half-hourly nighttime carbon efflux was dominated by air temperature with additional suppression effects from tidal inundation and rain; (2) the importance of environmental factors in controlling daily NEE decreased in the order of PAR, air temperature, sea breeze, VPD, tidal salinity, and tidal inundation; (3) the seasonality of monthly NEE was strongly regulated by tidal inundation and rain. This was the first study to examine both direct and indirect effects of tidal and sea breeze activity on mangrove NEE using long-term continuous eddy covariance measurements, and to confirm the importance of previously neglected indirect effects of tidal and sea breeze on mangrove carbon sink. Strong negative correlations between mangrove carbon sink and air temperature/tidal inundation implied that mangrove wetland could become a weaker blue carbon sink in response to global warming and sea level rise in the future.
