Abstract:By providing dual active sites to synergistically accelerate the H2O dissociation and H+ reduction, ordered intermetallic alloys usually show extraordinary performance for pH‐universal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, activated N‐doped mesoporous carbon spheres‐supported intermetallic Pt3Fe alloys (Pt3Fe/NMCS‐A) as a highly‐efficient electrocatalyst for pH‐universal HER is reported. The Pt3Fe/NMCS‐A exhibits low overpotential (η10) of 13, 29, and 48 mV to deliver 10 mA cm−2 in 0.5 M H2SO4, 1.0 M KOH, and 1.0 M phosphate buffered solution (PBS), respectively, as well as robust stability to maintain the overall catalytic performances. Theoretical studies reveal that the strong Pt 5d−Fe 3d orbital electronic interactions negatively shift the d‐band center of Pt 5d orbital, resulting in reduced H* adsorption energy of Pt sites and enhanced acidic HER activity. With Pt and Fe acting as co‐adsorption sites for H* and *OH intermediates, respectively, a low energy barrier is required for Pt3Fe/NMCS‐A to dissociate the H2O to afford H* intermediates, which greatly promotes the H* intermediates adsorption and H2 formation in alkaline and neutral conditions. The synthetic strategy is further extended to the synthesis of Pt3Co and Pt3Ni alloys with excellent HER activity in pH‐universal electrolytes, demonstrating the great potential of these Pt‐based alloys for practical applications. What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the problems of catalyst activity and stability in the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER), especially the problem of universal applicability under different pH conditions (acidic, alkaline, and neutral electrolytes). Specifically, the article explores the method of achieving highly efficient HER catalytic performance that is universally applicable under different pH conditions by adjusting the d - band center of Pt_3Fe alloy nanoparticles. ### Core issues of the paper 1. **Improving HER catalytic efficiency**: By synthesizing Pt_3Fe alloy nanoparticles with a specific structure, enhance their HER catalytic activity under different pH conditions. 2. **Solving the differences of HER under different pH conditions**: Research how to make the catalyst exhibit excellent catalytic performance in acidic, alkaline, and neutral electrolytes. 3. **Improving the stability of the catalyst and the utilization rate of active sites**: By optimizing the preparation method of the catalyst, improve its stability at high current density and the utilization rate of active sites. ### Specific methods - **Material design**: Load ordered intermetallic compound Pt_3Fe alloy nanoparticles on N - doped mesoporous carbon spheres (NMCS - A) to form an efficient electrocatalyst. - **Theoretical analysis**: Use theoretical calculations to reveal the influence of strong Pt 5d - Fe 3d orbital electron interaction on the d - band center, thereby reducing the H* adsorption energy and improving HER activity. - **Experimental verification**: Verify the HER performance of the catalyst under different pH conditions by electrochemical test methods such as linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and Tafel slope. ### Main findings - **Low over - potential**: The over - potentials of Pt_3Fe/NMCS - A in 0.5 M H_2SO_4, 1.0 M KOH, and 1.0 M phosphate - buffered saline (PBS) are only 13 mV, 29 mV, and 48 mV respectively to reach a current density of 10 mA cm^(-2). - **High stability**: The catalyst has maintained good catalytic performance during long - term operation. - **Theoretical support**: Theoretical calculations show that the strong Pt 5d - Fe 3d orbital electron interaction causes the negative shift of the d - band center of the Pt 5d orbital, reducing the H* adsorption energy, thereby improving HER activity. ### Conclusion By adjusting the d - band center, Pt_3Fe/NMCS - A exhibits excellent HER catalytic performance under different pH conditions, with low over - potential, high stability, and high utilization rate of active sites. These results provide new ideas and methods for the development of efficient and low - cost HER catalysts.
