Abstract:A mirrored transformation optics (MTO) approach is presented to overcome the material mismatch in transformation optics. It makes good use of the reflection behavior and introduce a mirrored medium to offset the phase discontinuities. Using this approach, a high-performance planar focusing lens of transmission-type is designed, which has large concentration ratio than other focusing lens obtained by generalized Snell law. The MTO will not change any functionality of the original lens and promising potential applications in imaging and light energy harvesting.

Research of an Adaptive Micro-Mirror Based on Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical- System

Abstract:A novel adjustable focal-length optical adaptive micro-mirror based on bi-mental effect is presented. Compared with traditional deformable micro-mirror, micro-mirror fabricated by this method has the advantage of low driving voltage and large driving force. Besides, it is easy to be fabricated. Micro-machining processes such as oxygenation, photolithography, chemical etching and sputtering are experimented. A 4 × 4 bi-metal adjustable focal-length micro-mirror arrays have been completed. Each unit has an area of 3 mm × 3 mm with the thickness of silicon 60μm and aluminum film 150 nm. Deformable mirror area covers 79% of the total mirror area which is 100%. Dynamic performance of adjustable focal-length micro-mirror is tested using laser wave-front interferometer. Experiment results demonstrate that the micro-mirror can produce uni-directional continuous deformation with the maximum deformation of 15.8 and nonlinearity lag of 27%. It can work at 0-2.5 V with an adjustable focal length ranging from ∞ to 0.036 m.

Abstract:A novel deformable micro-mirror array based on the converse piezoelectric effect of PZT Pb(ZrxTi1-xO3) thin films is introdced.In this way,we choose the heavily doped silicon chip as the substrate,lead titanate (PbTiO3,PT) as the buffer layer,lead zirconate titanate (PbZrxTi1-xO3,PZT) as the deformable layer and aluminum(Al) as the reflection surface.The layer structure of Al/PZT/PT/Si is realized.The thickness of PZT thin film varies according to the applied voltage,which makes the unit of micro-mirror array deform and changes the partial surface shape of the mirror.The distorted wavefront and aberration is corrected and the image quality is improved.Although the test is complicated by thermal expansion of the film,the deformation measurement is carried out in the interferometer.About 1.2 μm controllable deformation is realized.The testing result proves the practicability of applying PZT thin film in the configuration of deformable micro-mirror in adaptive optics.

Abstract:Many optical instruments with dielectric singularities cannot be manufactured directly. Their singularities can be transmuted through optical transformation, and equivalent physical media can be built to perform the same optical behaviors. The transformed physical media are usually anisotropic and inhomogeneous and, therefore, difficult to fabricate. In this work, several mathematical approaches are proposed to produce a transformed lens with all the elements of the material tensors to be no less than unity. This increases the ease of implementation, as natural materials may be used, which substantially widens the bandwidth of the transformed devices. Although we focus on an omnidirectional retroreflection lens as an example, the approaches developed here are universal and applicable to a wide class of devices with dielectric singularities. Abstract:This paper presents a detailed analysis on the influence of misalignment errors of optical components in an orthogonal two-axis Lloyd's mirror interferometer, which can fabricate two-dimensional grating structures in a single exposure. In an ideal condition, defect-free two-dimensional grating structures can be fabricated by the interferometer. However, in a real case, visible stripes caused by misalignment errors of the optical components in the interferometer always appear on the fabricated grating structures. In this paper, theoretical analysis and experiments are carried out to analyze the influences of the misalignment errors of the optical components in the orthogonal two-axis Lloyd's mirror interferometer.

Abstract:In the modern world, the ability to manipulate and control electromagnetic waves has greatly changed people's lives. Novel optical and electromagnetic phenomena and devices will lead to new scientific trends and techniques in the future. The exploration of new theories of optical design and new materials for optical engineering has attracted great attention in recent years. Transformation optics (TO) provides a new way to design optical devices with extraordinary predesigned functions such as invisibility cloaks and electromagnetic wormholes. As the development of artificial electromagnetic media (e.g. metamaterials and metasurfaces) progresses, many of these novel optical devices designed by TO have been experimentally demonstrated and used in specific applications. Starting from the basic theory of transformation optics, we review its applications, extensions, new branches and recent developments in this paper.

Abstract:By engineering the spatial dispersion of metamaterial, we demonstrate the experimental realization of full-parameter transformation optics (TO) media. Such a medium allows near 100% transmission for all TE polarized incident waves from free space, regardless of both incidence and polarization angles. Its constitutive parameters tensor has a diagonal form diag (a, a, 1/a), which exactly satisfies the model of uniaxial perfectly matched layer (UPML). The omnidirectionally reflectionless transparency is well explained by the model of UPML and TO media, verified by both simulation and experimental measurement. Such a universal approach can be easily extended from microwave to terahertz wave frequencies.

Abstract:Underpinned by the advent of metamaterials (MMs), transformation optics (TO) offers great versatility to design wave-manipulation devices [1,2], such as cloaks, beam shifter, superlenses, impedence-matched hyperlenses, and field rotator. Although TO theory developed vigorously, it's is quite obvious that most TO ideas are very difficult to realize in practice, because of the extreme electromagnetic parameters. It's highly desirable to create devices for which real samples can be realized and with which designed functionality can be demonstrated experimentally. In this work, we designed and realized an optically non-existing transformation-media, called “Optic-Null media” (ONM) [3], based on a fractal plasmonic metamaterial. Distinct from epsilon-near-zero media and hyperbolic media, our design is prefect transparent for any incident angle for TE or TM mode at working frequency, without phase accumulation. Based on the coordinate transformation methods, the permittivity tensor and permeability tensor of such media are described as equation.

Abstract:The nested Wolter-I type focusing mirror is widely used in the field of X-ray astronomy. The thin-shell mirrors produced by the electroforming replication method will introduce various shape errors during the fabricating and assembling process. This study introduces a non-analytical 3D geometrical ray tracing algorithm capable of predicting optical performance for large mirror deformations. The algorithm's implementation involves error reconstruction, light source and ray simulation, and optical performance calculation. Experimental and simulation validation underscores the algorithm's precision and effectiveness. The results also indicate that edge deformation can seriously affect imaging contrast which is generally considered to be determined only by surface scattering. Applying the 3D ray tracing algorithm, a range of low-frequency fabrication and assembly errors are simulated, such as absolute radius, taper, roundness, edge effects, mirror posture, and hoisting deformation errors, and their effects on imaging quality are analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:We present a new technique for the design of transformation-optics devices based on large-scale optimization to achieve the optimal effective isotropic dielectric materials within prescribed index bounds, which is computationally cheap because transformation optics circumvents the need to solve Maxwell's equations at each step. We apply this technique to the design of multimode waveguide bends (realized experimentally in a previous paper) and mode squeezers, in which all modes are transported equally without scattering. In addition to the optimization, a key point is the identification of the correct boundary conditions to ensure reflectionless coupling to untransformed regions while allowing maximum flexibility in the optimization. Many previous authors in transformation optics used a certain kind of quasiconformal map which overconstrained the problem by requiring that the entire boundary shape be specified a priori while at the same time underconstraining the problem by employing "slipping" boundary conditions that permit unwanted interface reflections.

Abstract:Two kinds of field rotation occur in large optical telescopes, one is caused by the coordinate transformation between horizontal coordinate system and equatorial coordinate system, the other is caused by the mutual rotation among fold mirrors in telescope. In order to get high spatial resolution and stationary image, field rotation compensation is required. Now K mirror, as a derotator, is widely applied. Using matrix can explain the principal of K mirror and achieve the requirements for derotation, which leads to two sorts of K mirror: the symmetric and asymmetric. Similar to prisms, K mirror can affect the optical axis and imaging.Considered the requirements of machining, assembly and the total optical path, the aperture, volume and base angles of K mirror have been analyzed and optimized in this paper. An example of the symmetric K mirror is designed by Zemax. The tolerance of assembly and alignment have been explained by 3D-geometric relationship and calculated by Zemax and MATLAB.

Abstract:Transformation optics (TO) provides an unprecedented technique to control electromagnetic (EM) waves by engineering the constitutive parameters of the surrounding medium through a proper spatial transformation. In general, ideal transformation optical devices require simultaneous electric and magnetic responses along all three dimensions. To ease the practical implementation, previous studies usually made use of reduced parameters or other simplified approaches, which inevitably introduce extra reflection or unwanted phase shift. Up to today, experimental realizations of full-parameter transformation optical devices in free space are still quite limited. Here, a general design strategy is proposed to solve this problem. As a specific example, a full-parameter spatial-compression TO medium with constitutive parameters taking the diagonal form diag(a, a, 1/a) for the TM wave incidence was designed and realized experimentally. Such spatial-compression TO media were then applied to the implementation of an ideal omnidirectional invisibility cloak capable of concealing a large-scale object over a wide range of illumination angles. Both the simulation and experiment confirm that the cloak allows for nearly unity transmission of EM waves in the forward direction without introducing extra scattering or phase shift. This work constitutes an important stepping stone for future practical implementation of arbitrary full-parameter omnidirectional transformation optical devices.

Abstract:Transformation optics aims to identify artificial materials and structures with desired electromagnetic properties by means of pertinent coordinate transformations. In general, such schemes are meant to appropriately tailor the constitutive parameters of metamaterials in order to control the trajectory of light in two and three dimensions. Here, we introduce a new class of one-dimensional optical transformations that exploits the mathematical framework of supersymmetry (SUSY). This systematic approach can be utilized to synthesize photonic configurations with identical reflection and transmission characteristics, down to the phase, for all incident angles, thus rendering them perfectly indistinguishable to an external observer. Along these lines, low-contrast dielectric arrangements can be designed to fully mimic the behavior of a given high-contrast structure that would have been otherwise beyond the reach of available materials and existing fabrication techniques. Similar strategies can also be adopted to replace negative-permittivity domains, thus averting unwanted optical losses.

Multifunctional Metamirrors Involving Simultaneous Linear-polarization Conversion and Focusing

Abstract:Reducing a set of diverse bulk-optic-based optical components to a single ultrathin and compact element that enables the same complex functionality has become an emerging research area, propelling further integration and miniaturization in photonics. In this work, we establish a versatile metasurface platform based on gap-surface plasmon meta-atoms enabling efficient linear-polarization conversion along with the complete phase control over reflected fields. Capitalizing on the meta-atom design, multifunctional metamirrors involving linear-polarization conversion and focusing are experimentally demonstrated to generate various kinds of focused beams with distinct phase distributions and wavefronts, reproducing thereby the combined functionalities of conventional half-wave plates, lenses, and even spatial light modulators. The proof-of-concept fabricated metamirrors exhibit excellent capability of linear-polarization conversion and focusing within the wavelength range from 800 to 950 nm under linearly-polarized excitation. The multifunctional metamirrors design developed in this study opens new avenues in the advanced research and applications targeting photonics integration of diversified functionalities.

Abstract:Submirror splicing technology can avoid difficulties in manufacture and transportation of the integrated primary mirrors with large aperture, and achieve further breakthroughs in entire aperture, which has been widely applied in high-resolution space optical cameras. This study constructed a submirror splicing system based on a self-developed six-DOF cross-scale piezoelectric pose adjustment platform (PPAM) and proposed confocal and co-phasing pose adjustment strategies for adjusting the pose of the submirrors. Theoretical models for calculating splicing motion resolution were established, and optical confocal and co-phasing adjustment experiments were successfully accomplished, which demonstrated that the proposed pose adjustment strategies were feasible and the self-developed six-DOF cross-scale PPAM had the ability to adjust the pose of submirror and compensate external disturbance. Based on multi-DOF and cross-scale characteristics of the PPAM, submirror splicing tests were successfully performed to achieve cross-scale pose and precise phase adjustments of the image.

Abstract:We show that by using the recently emerged transformation optics, it is possible to design perfect lenses in new geometries with an imaging performance almost equivalent to the well studied perfect slab lens. In addition, the theory of transformation optics generalizes the complementary bilayer lenses to many other material compositions, including cases where passive or active obstacles are involved in the lens system.

Abstract:Micro mirrors play an important role in most optical MEMS applications. Some torsion-mirror structures with novel folding beams are proposed and fabricated by combing with bulk micro machining and surface micro machining technology in the paper. These structures are simulated and optimized by FEM/BEM method with ANSYS and IntelliSuite software both in the mechanical field and the coupling field of mechanics and electricity to evaluate the mechanical robustness and the electrical response. According to the simulation results, some parameters which greatly affect the mirror's total performance are obtained. And then the surface roughness of micro mirrors are measured and a mathematical model based on the scalar scattering theory, which describes the effects of the surface roughness on the reflectivity, is constructed to analyze the optical properties of the micro mirrors. Based on these characterization results, some ameliorated processing methods are brought forward to enhance the micro mirror's optical-mechanical-electrical performance.

Abstract:A new theory on designing electromagnetic/optical devices is proposed, namely, an optical surface transformation (OST). One arbitrary surface can establish the corresponding relationship with another surface entirely optically with an optic-null medium (ONM), (i.e. the electromagnetic wave propagates from one surface to its equivalent surface without any phase delay). Many novel optical devices can be designed by an OST with the help of an ONM. Compared with traditional devices designed by Transformation Optics, our optical surface-reshaping devices have two main advantages. Firstly, the design process is very simple (i.e. we do not need to consider any mathematics on how to make a coordinate transformation and what we need to do is simply to design the shapes of the input and the output surfaces of the devices). Secondly, we only need one homogeneous anisotropic medium to realize all devices designed by this method. Our method will explore a new way to design novel optical devices without considering any coordinate transformations.
