Abstract:In recent years, deep learning and web of things (WoT) have become hot topics. The relevant research issues in deep learning have been in increasingly investigated and published. Therefore, the title of this workshop is ”the 2nd International Workshop on Deep Learning for the Web of Things (DLWoT’22)” for the Web Conference 2022 (WWW’22). This workshop solicits papers on various disciplines, which include but are not limited to: (1) deep learning for massive IoT, (2) deep learning for critical IoT, (3) deep learning for enhancing IoT security, (4) deep learning for enhancing IoT privacy, (5) preprocessing of IoT data for AI modeling, and (6) deep learning for IoT applications (e.g., smart home, smart agriculture, interactive art, and so on). DLWoT’22 includes two tracks: (1) keynote speaker and (2) workshop papers. One keynote speaker is invited to give a talk, and 8 accepted workshop papers are presented.

Abstract:Deep learning and the Web of Things (WoT) have become powerful tools for web engineering, leading to increased investigation and publication of research related to deep learning in web engineering. Therefore, this workshop is titled "The 3rd International Workshop on Deep Learning for the Web of Things" for the Web Conference 2023 (WWW’23). Abstract:This volume is a collection of contributions from the 5th Workshop on Machine Learning and Interpretation in Neuroimaging (MLINI) at the Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS 2015) conference. Modern multivariate statistical methods developed in the rapidly growing field of machine learning are being increasingly applied to various problems in neuroimaging, from cognitive state detection to clinical diagnosis and prognosis. Multivariate pattern analysis methods are designed to examine complex relationships between high-dimensional signals, such as brain images, and outcomes of interest, such as the category of a stimulus, a type of a mental state of a subject, or a specific mental disorder. Such techniques are in contrast with the traditional mass-univariate approaches that dominated neuroimaging in the past and treated each individual imaging measurement in isolation. We believe that machine learning has a prominent role in shaping how questions in neuroscience are framed, and that the machine-learning mind set is now entering modern psychology and behavioral studies. It is also equally important that practical applications in these fields motivate a rapidly evolving line or research in the machine learning community. In parallel, there is an intense interest in learning more about brain function in the context of rich naturalistic environments and scenes. Efforts to go beyond highly specific paradigms that pinpoint a single function, towards schemes for measuring the interaction with natural and more varied scene are made. The goal of the workshop is to pinpoint the most pressing issues and common challenges across the neuroscience, neuroimaging, psychology and machine learning fields, and to sketch future directions and open questions in the light of novel methodology.

Abstract:Science meets Engineering in Deep Learning took place in Vancouver as part of the Workshop section of NeurIPS 2019. As organizers of the workshop, we created the following report in an attempt to isolate emerging topics and recurring themes that have been presented throughout the event. Deep learning can still be a complex mix of art and engineering despite its tremendous success in recent years. The workshop aimed at gathering people across the board to address seemingly contrasting challenges in the problems they are working on. As part of the call for the workshop, particular attention has been given to the interdependence of architecture, data, and optimization that gives rise to an enormous landscape of design and performance intricacies that are not well-understood. This year, our goal was to emphasize the following directions in our community: (i) identify obstacles in the way to better models and algorithms; (ii) identify the general trends from which we would like to build scientific and potentially theoretical understanding; and (iii) the rigorous design of scientific experiments and experimental protocols whose purpose is to resolve and pinpoint the origin of mysteries while ensuring reproducibility and robustness of conclusions. In the event, these topics emerged and were broadly discussed, matching our expectations and paving the way for new studies in these directions. While we acknowledge that the text is naturally biased as it comes through our lens, here we present an attempt to do a fair job of highlighting the outcome of the workshop.

Abstract:Embedded machine learning (ML) on low-power devices, also known as "TinyML," enables intelligent applications on accessible hardware and fosters collaboration across disciplines to solve real-world problems. Its interdisciplinary and practical nature makes embedded ML education appealing, but barriers remain that limit its accessibility, especially in developing countries. Challenges include limited open-source software, courseware, models, and datasets that can be used with globally accessible heterogeneous hardware. Our vision is that with concerted effort and partnerships between industry and academia, we can overcome such challenges and enable embedded ML education to empower developers and researchers worldwide to build locally relevant AI solutions on low-cost hardware, increasing diversity and sustainability in the field. Towards this aim, we document efforts made by the TinyML4D community to scale embedded ML education globally through open-source curricula and introductory workshops co-created by international educators. We conclude with calls to action to further develop modular and inclusive resources and transform embedded ML into a truly global gateway to embedded AI skills development.

Abstract:With a focus on natural language processing (NLP) and the role of large language models (LLMs), we explore the intersection of machine learning, deep learning, and artificial intelligence. As artificial intelligence continues to revolutionize fields from healthcare to finance, NLP techniques such as tokenization, text classification, and entity recognition are essential for processing and understanding human language. This paper discusses advanced data preprocessing techniques and the use of frameworks like Hugging Face for implementing transformer-based models. Additionally, it highlights challenges such as handling multilingual data, reducing bias, and ensuring model robustness. By addressing key aspects of data processing and model fine-tuning, this work aims to provide insights into deploying effective and ethically sound AI solutions.

Abstract:It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 9th ACM Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Security --- AISec 2016. AISec, having been annually co-located with CCS for nine consecutive years, is the premier meeting place for researchers interested in the intersection of security, privacy, AI, and machine learning. Its role as a venue has been to merge practical security problems with advances in AI and machine learning. In doing so, researchers also have been developing theory and analytics unique to this domain and have explored diverse topics such as learning in game-theoretic adversarial environments, privacy-preserving learning, and applications to spam and intrusion detection. AISec 2016 drew a record 38 submissions, of which 12 (32%) were selected for publication and presentation. Submissions arrived from researchers in 16 countries, from a wide variety of institutions both academic and corporate. The accepted papers were organized into the following thematic groups: Security Data Sets: Collection and analysis of data that can serve as a baseline for AI/ML research in security. Machine Learning and Security in Practice: Systems that use machine learning to solve a particular security problem. Foundations: Theoretical constructs and best practices for applying machine learning to security. Privacy: Attacks on user privacy or anonymity, and privacy-preserving constructions of machine learning systems. The keynote address will be given by Elie Bursztein of Google, Inc., whose talk is entitled, "Why is applying machine learning to anti-abuse so hard?" In this talk, Dr. Bursztein will discuss challenges in the reproducibility of scientific results from machine learning algorithms and what we can do about it. Dr. Bursztein's talk will touch on issues arising from proprietary hardware, dataset availability, adversarial machine learning, and the ethics of data. He will also consider several privacy questions related to machine learning models.

Abstract:The "Workshop on Machine learning in heterogeneous porous materials" brought together international scientific communities of applied mathematics, porous media, and material sciences with experts in the areas of heterogeneous materials, machine learning (ML) and applied mathematics to identify how ML can advance materials research. Within the scope of ML and materials research, the goal of the workshop was to discuss the state-of-the-art in each community, promote crosstalk and accelerate multi-disciplinary collaborative research, and identify challenges and opportunities. As the end result, four topic areas were identified: ML in predicting materials properties, and discovery and design of novel materials, ML in porous and fractured media and time-dependent phenomena, Multi-scale modeling in heterogeneous porous materials via ML, and Discovery of materials constitutive laws and new governing equations. This workshop was part of the AmeriMech Symposium series sponsored by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine and the U.S. National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics.

Abstract:With the wide application of machine learning algorithms to the real world, class imbalance and concept drift have become crucial learning issues. Class imbalance happens when the data categories are not equally represented, i.e., at least one category is minority compared to other categories. It can cause learning bias towards the majority class and poor generalization. Concept drift is a change in the underlying distribution of the problem, and is a significant issue specially when learning from data streams. It requires learners to be adaptive to dynamic changes. Class imbalance and concept drift can significantly hinder predictive performance, and the problem becomes particularly challenging when they occur simultaneously. This challenge arises from the fact that one problem can affect the treatment of the other. For example, drift detection algorithms based on the traditional classification error may be sensitive to the imbalanced degree and become less effective; and class imbalance techniques need to be adaptive to changing imbalance rates, otherwise the class receiving the preferential treatment may not be the correct minority class at the current moment. Therefore, the mutual effect of class imbalance and concept drift should be considered during algorithm design. The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers from the areas of class imbalance learning and concept drift in order to encourage discussions and new collaborations on solving the combined issue of class imbalance and concept drift. It provides a forum for international researchers and practitioners to share and discuss their original work on addressing new challenges and research issues in class imbalance learning, concept drift, and the combined issues of class imbalance and concept drift. The proceedings include 8 papers on these topics.

Abstract:NLP Workbench is a web-based platform for text mining that allows non-expert users to obtain semantic understanding of large-scale corpora using state-of-the-art text mining models. The platform is built upon latest pre-trained models and open source systems from academia that provide semantic analysis functionalities, including but not limited to entity linking, sentiment analysis, semantic parsing, and relation extraction. Its extensible design enables researchers and developers to smoothly replace an existing model or integrate a new one. To improve efficiency, we employ a microservice architecture that facilitates allocation of acceleration hardware and parallelization of computation. This paper presents the architecture of NLP Workbench and discusses the challenges we faced in designing it. We also discuss diverse use cases of NLP Workbench and the benefits of using it over other approaches. The platform is under active development, with its source code released under the MIT license. A website and a short video demonstrating our platform are also available.

Abstract:Tools, models and statistical methods for signal processing and medical image analysis and training deep learning models to create research prototypes for eventual clinical applications are of special interest to the biomedical imaging community. But material and optical properties of biological tissues are complex and not easily captured by imaging devices. Added complexity can be introduced by datasets with underrepresentation of medical images from races and ethnicities for deep learning, and limited knowledge about the regulatory framework needed for commercialization and safety of emerging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) technologies for medical image analysis. This extended version of the workshop paper presented at the special session of the 2022 IEEE 19th International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging, describes strategy and opportunities by University of California professors engaged in machine learning (section I) and clinical research (section II), the Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories (OSEL) section III, and officials at the US FDA in Center for Devices & Radiological Health (CDRH) section IV. Performance evaluations of AI/ML models of skin (RGB), tissue biopsy (digital pathology), and lungs and kidneys (Magnetic Resonance, X-ray, Computed Tomography) medical images for regulatory evaluations and real-world deployment are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Today, Electrical Submersible Pump (ESP) failure analysis is a tedious, human-intensive, and time-consuming activity involving dismantle, inspection, and failure analysis (DIFA) for each failure. This paper presents a novel artificial intelligence workflow using an ensemble of machine learning (ML) algorithms coupled with natural language processing (NLP) and deep learning (DL). The algorithms outlined in this paper bring together structured and unstructured data across equipment, production, operations, and failure reports to automate root cause identification and analysis post breakdown. This process will result in reduced turnaround time (TAT) and human effort thus drastically improving process efficiency.
