Abstract:Due to the high health risks associated with indoor air pollutants and long-term exposure, indoor air quality has received increasing attention. In this study, we put emphasis on the molecular composition, source emissions, and chemical aging of air pollutants in a residence with designed activities mimicking ordinary Hong Kong homes. More than 150 air pollutants were detected at molecular level, 87 of which were quantified at a time resolution of not less than 1 hour. The indoor-to-outdoor ratios were higher than 1 for most of the primary air pollutants, due to emissions of indoor activities and indoor backgrounds (especially for aldehydes). In contrast, many secondary air pollutants exhibited higher concentrations in outdoor air. Painting ranked first in aldehyde emissions, which also caused great enhancement of aromatics. Incense burning had the highest emissions of particle-phase organics, with vanillic acid and syringic acid as markers. The other noteworthy fingerprints enabled by online measurements included linoleic acid, cholesterol, and oleic acid for cooking, 2,5-dimethylfuran, stigmasterol, iso-/anteiso-alkanes, and fructose isomers for smoking, C28 -C34 even n-alkanes for candle burning, and monoterpenes for the use of air freshener, cleaning agents, and camphor oil. We showed clear evidence of chemical aging of cooking emissions, giving a hint of indoor heterogeneous chemistry. This study highlights the value of organic molecules measured at high time resolutions in enhancing our knowledge on indoor air quality.

Abstract:Due to endogenous existence and hazardous properties, the quantification of fatty and aromatic aldehydes in food matrices is indispensable to food safety. Current analytical methodologies for aldehydes in food suffer from several drawbacks (typically complicated pretreatment, long analysis time and low analytical throughput, low sensitivity, etc.). In this work, a highly sensitive, high-throughput and sample pretreatment-free method for aldehyde analysis was developed to address the above problems, where in situ extraction and derivatization of aldehydes with hydrazines to hydrazones were integrated into reactive paper spray ionization mass spectrometry (reactive PSI-MS) considering weakly ionizable properties of aldehydes. Four aldehydes, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde and benzaldehyde were reacted with dansyl hydrazine in 1.5 % v/v HAc acidified methanol on the qualitative fast-speed filter paper for 5 min, and then a voltage (+4 kV) was applied to initiate paper spray for mass spectrometry detection with internal calibration by dansyl amide. Once the completion of MS analysis, the glass plate was moved to introduce the second triangular tip towards the MS inlet (5 mm apart) for next trial, achieving high-throughput reactive PSI-MS analysis (60 h(-1)). The four aldehydes showed good linearity in the concentration range from 2 to 150 mu M with low detection limits of 0.03-0.15 mu M. The method was applied to direct quantification of four aldehydes in 15 kinds of foods such as vegetables, fruits and meat products. The proposed method has the advantages of simple operation, high efficiency and high sensitivity, making it attractive to routine analysis of aldehydes in food, environmental and biological samples.
Indoor aldehydes: measurement of contamination levels and identification of their determinants in Paris dwellings

Abstract:The recent increased prevalence of childhood asthma and atopy has brought into question the impact of outdoor pollutants and indoor air quality. The contributory role of aldehydes to this problem and the fact that they are mainly derived from the domestic environment make them of particular interest. This study therefore measures six different aldehyde levels in Paris dwellings from potentially different sources and identifies their indoor determinants. The study was carried out in the three principal rooms of 61 flats with no previous history of complaint for olfactory nuisance or specific symptoms, two-thirds of the flats having been recently refurbished. Aldehydes were sampled in these rooms using passive samplers, and a questionnaire on potential aldehyde sources was filled out at the same time. A multiple linear regression model was used to investigate indoor aldehyde determinants. Our study revealed that propionaldehyde and benzaldehyde were of minor importance compared to formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, pentanal, and hexanal. We found that levels of these last four compounds depended on the age of wall or floor coverings (renovations less than 1 year old), smoking, and ambient parameters (carbon dioxide levels, temperature). These results could help in the assessment of indoor aldehyde emissions.
Levels, sources, and health risks of carbonyls in residential indoor air in Hangzhou, China

Abstract:Concentrations of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, propionaldehyde, i-pentanal, and butyraldehyde in residential indoor air in Hangzhou were determined. The mean concentration of the total carbonyl compounds in summer was 222.6 microg/m(3), higher than that in winter (68.5 microg/m(3)). The concentration of a specific carbonyl in indoor air was higher than the outdoor air measurement, indicating the release of carbonyls from the indoor sources. Formaldehyde and acetone were the most abundant carbonyls detected in summer and winter, respectively. Multiple regression analysis indicated that carbonyl concentrations in residential indoor air depended on the age of decoration and furniture, as well as their concentrations in outdoor air. In addition, a primary estimation showed that the health risks of carbonyls in summer were higher than those in winter.

Abstract:The concentrations of Carbonyl in 40 urban residences in Beijing were measured in this study. The carbonyls in indoor air were collected by a DNPH-pre-treated cartridge, extracted by acetonitrile and analyzed by HPLC. A questionnaire was administrated to the residents in order to collect the information of building characteristics and human health conditions. The total concentrations of carbonyls were 136.0±77.5μg/m3. Formaldehyde was the most abundant species with concentrations of 64.4±39.7μg/m3, following by acetaldehyde, acetone, and hexaldehyde. The indoor source strengths of carbonyl species were estimated with One-compartment mass balance model. The indoor source strengths of formaldehyde acetaldehyde, acetone and hexaldehyde were estimated to be 11.6mg/h, 4.41mg/h, 1.17mg/h, and 4.85mg/h, respectively. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was employed to examine the impacts of possible factors on the carbonyl concentrations. We found that sofa material, smoking and residence location had significant impacts on formaldehyde concentration, smoking and kitchen structure on acetaldehyde, quantity of plants and kitchen structure on acetone, quantity of plants and pesticide on hexaldehyde, respectively.
Analysis of Voc Emissions Using Pca/Apcs Receptor Model at City of Shanghai, China

Abstract:Qualification of the sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and their effects on city air pollution are crucial issues to develop an effective air pollution control strategy in many polluted large cities of China. In this study, the VOC concentrations measured in Shanghai, China from 2006 to 2008 are analyzed. A receptor model (PCA/APCS; Principal Component Analysis/Absolute Principal Component Scores) is applied for identifying the contributions of individual VOC sources to VOC concentrations. Using the PCA/APCS technique, five and four surrogated VOC sources are classified in the center of Shanghai city in summer and in winter. In summer, the five VOC sources include PCs1 (liquefied petroleum gas/natural gas leakage and gasoline evaporation), PCs2 (vehicle related emissions), PCs3 (solvent usages), PCs4 (industrial productions), and PCs5 (biomass/biofuel/coal burning and other natural sources). In winter, the four VOC sources include PCw1 (liquefied petroleum gas/natural gas leakage and gasoline evaporation), PCw2 (solvent usages and industrial productions), PCw3 (vehicle related emissions), and PCw4 (biomass/biofuel/coal burning). The result suggests that during summer, 24, 28, 17, 18, and 13% of the measured VOC concentrations were estimated due to the PCs1, PCs2, PCs3, PCs4, and PCs5 VOC sources, respectively. During winter, 17, 48, 23, and 12% of the measured VOC concentrations were attributed to the PCw1, PCw2, PCw3, and PCw4 VOC sources, respectively. For aromatic concentrations, 35% of the concentrations were resulted from solvent usage (PCs3), following by industrial productions (PCs4) of 27%, and vehicle emissions (PCs2) of 19%. For alkene concentrations, the two largest contributors were due to gasoline industrial and vehicle emissions in both summer and winter. For alkane concentrations, the largest sources were due to gasoline industrial emissions (PCs1) and vehicle emissions (PCs2) in summer. In winter, vehicle emissions (PCw3), solvent usages/industrial productions (PCw2), and gasoline industrial emissions (PCw1) were the major sources. For halo-hydrocarbon concentrations, biomass/biofuel/coal burning and other natural sources were the major sources in both summer and winter.
Application of an on-sorbent derivatization sampling and in-injection port thermal desorption method for identification and quantification of C1-C10 ambient carbonvls

Abstract:The standard method for the determination of airborne carbonyls is to collect carbonyls onto 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) coated solid sorbent followed by solvent extraction of the solid sorbent and analysis of the derivatives using high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). We here report a newly developed approach that involves collection of the carbonyls onto pentafluorophenyl hydrazine (PFPH) coated solid sorbents followed by in-injection port thermal desorption and gas chromatographic (GC) analysis of the PFPH derivatives with mass spectrometric (MS) detection. A few carbonyls, such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acetone, are ubiquitous in both indoor and outdoor air as well as in organic solvents. In previous practices, solid sorbents were coated with the derivatization agent by applying solutions followed by drying, which inevitably introduces carbonyl impurity in the solvent to the sampling sorbent. We here describe a vapor coating technique that eliminates the use of solvents during the coating step; thereby greatly reduce background carbonyl contaminants. This newly developed method has been applied to measure ambient carbonyls in an urban location in Guangzhou, China. A total of 22 carbonyls were positively identified and quantified. An additional 14 carbonyls were tentatively identified on the basis of their mass spectra and relative retention times to known carbonyl compounds. Ranking of the measured carbonyls with respect to removal of the hydroxyl radical showed formaldehyde to be the most important followed by nonanal and glyoxal. Formaldehyde and acetaldehyde only accounted for ∼42% of OH removal by all the measured carbonyls, which indicates the importance of measuring all the significant carbonyls.

Abstract:The level of carbonyl compounds in indoor air is crucial due to possible health effects and the high prevalence of their potential sources. Therefore, selecting a convenient and rapid analytical technique for the reliable detection of carbonyl compound concentrations is important. The acetyl acetone (acac) method is a widely used standard procedure for detecting gaseous formaldehyde. For measuring formaldehyde along with other carbonyl compounds, the DNPH-method is commonly applied. The recommended procedure for measuring volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is sampling on Tenax TA, followed by thermal desorption and GC/MS analysis. In this study, different analytical techniques for the quantification of formaldehyde, pentanal, and hexanal are critically compared. It was found that the acac- and DNPH-method are in very good agreement for formaldehyde. In contrast, the DNPH-method significantly underestimates indoor air concentrations of the higher aldehydes in comparison to sampling on Tenax TA, although both methods are strongly correlated. The reported results are part of the EURIMA-WKI study on levels of indoor air pollutants resulting from construction, building materials and interior decoration.
Ambient Volatile Organic Compounds in a Suburban Site Between Beijing and Tianjin: Concentration Levels, Source Apportionment and Health Risk Assessment.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have vital implications for secondary pollutants, atmospheric oxidation and human health. Ambient VOCs were investigated using an online system, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry/flame ionization detector (GC-MS/FID), at a suburban site in Xianghe in the North China Plain from 6 November 2017 to 29 January 2018. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) receptor model was applied to identify the major VOC contributing sources. Four-step health risk assessment method was used to estimate risks of all risk-posing VOC species. A total of 101 VOCs were quantified, and the mean concentration of total VOCs was 61.04 ± 65.18 ppbv. The VOCs were dominated by alkanes (38.76%), followed by alkenes, aromatics, halocarbons, OVOCs, acetylene and acetonitrile. The results of PMF revealed that vehicle exhaust, industrial emissions, liquefied petroleum gas & natural gas, solvent utilization and secondary and long-lived species contributed 31.0%, 26.4%, 18.6%, 13.6% and 10.4%, respectively, to the total VOCs. Pollutant-specific and source-specific noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risk estimates were conducted, which showed that acrolein and vehicle exhaust had evident noncarcinogenic risks of 4.9 and 0.9, respectively. The carcinogenic risks of specific species (1,3-butadiene, acetaldehyde, benzene, chloroform and 1,2-dichloroethane) and identified sources were above the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) acceptable level (1.0 × 10-6) but below the tolerable risk level (1.0 × 10-4). Vehicle exhaust was the largest contributor (56.2%) to noncarcinogenic risk, but solvent utilization (32.6%) to carcinogenic risk. Moreover, with the evolution of pollution levels, almost all VOC species, contributions of alkenes, aromatics, solvent utilization and vehicle exhaust, and pollutant-specific and source-specific risks increased continuously and noticeably. Collectively, our findings unraveled the importance of alkenes, aromatics, solvent utilization and vehicle exhaust in the evolution of pollution levels. Future studies should consider targeting these VOC groups and sources when focusing on effective reduction strategies and assessing public health risks.

Abstract:Carbonyl compounds are important precursors of secondary air pollutants. With the rapid economic development and the implementation of stricter control measures in Beijing, the sources of carbonyls possibly changed. Based on measurement data obtained at an urban site in Beijing between 2005 and 2012, we investigated annual variations in carbonyl levels and sources during these years. In summer, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde levels decreased significantly at a rate of 9.1%/year and 7.2%/year, respectively, while acetone levels increased at a rate of 4.3%/year. In winter, formaldehyde levels increased and acetaldehyde levels decreased. We also investigated the factors driving the variation in carbonyls levels during summer by determination of emission ratios for carbonyls and their precursors, and calculation of photochemical formation of carbonyls. The relative declines for primary formaldehyde and acetaldehyde levels were larger than those for secondary formation. This is possibly due to the increasing usage of natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas which could result in the rise of carbonyl precursor emission ratios. The increase in acetone levels might be related to the rising solvent usage in Beijing during these years. The influences of these sources should be paid more attention in future research.
Emission of aldehydes from different cooking processes: a review study

Abstract:As one of the primary contributing sources of indoor air pollution, cooking oil fumes are generated from a series of thermodynamic reactions between food ingredients. Nowadays, various compounds, especially aldehydes in fumes with adverse health effects, are detected. In the current study, the sampling and experimental methods, emission factors, and health effects related to emitted aldehydes from various cooking styles such as frying, grilling, barbequing, roasting, steaming, and boiling were reviewed. Generally, oxidation of food fatty contents is the primary source of aldehyde generation, while the frying process had the most influence due to the high unsaturated fatty acid contents related to edible oil consumption. However, other cooking techniques with high temperatures (as accelerating parameters) such as roasting and microwave can also result in more aldehydes release. Furthermore, cooking with high fatty and water content are also able to generate more aldehydes. Finally, health risk assessment results related to investigated studies at three phases of lab-scale, home, and commercial kitchens showed an exceeded limit for both the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk of aldehydes attributed to inadequate ventilation.
Aldehydes in Relation to Air Pollution Sources: A Case Study Around the Beijing Olympics.

Abstract:This study was carried out to characterize three aldehydes of health concern (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acrolein) at a central Beijing site in the summer and early fall of 2008 (from June to October). Aldehydes in polluted atmospheres come from both primary and secondary sources, which limits the control strategies for these reactive compounds. Measurements were made before, during, and after the Beijing Olympics to examine whether the dramatic air pollution control measures implemented during the Olympics had an impact on concentrations of the three aldehydes and their underlying primary and secondary sources. Average concentrations of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acrolein were 29.3±15.1 μg/m3, 27.1±15.7 μg/m3 and 2.3±1.0 μg/m3, respectively, for the entire period of measurements, all being at the high end of concentration ranges measured in cities around the world in photochemical smog seasons. Formaldehyde and acrolein increased during the pollution control period compared to the pre-Olympic Games, followed the changing pattern of temperature, and were significantly correlated with ozone and with a secondary formation factor identified by principal component analysis (PCA). In contrast, acetaldehyde had a reduction in mean concentration during the Olympic air pollution control period compared to the pre-Olympic period and was significantly correlated with several pollutants emitted from local emission sources (e.g., NO2, CO, and PM2.5). Acetaldehyde was also more strongly associated with primary emission sources including vegetative burning and oil combustion factors identified through the PCA. All three aldehydes were lower during the post-Olympic sampling period compared to the before and during Olympic periods, likely due to seasonal and regional effects. Our findings point to the complexity of source control strategies for secondary pollutants.
Investigating aldehyde and ketone compounds produced from indoor cooking emissions and assessing their health risk to human beings

Abstract:Aldehyde and ketone compounds are ubiquitous in the air and prone to adverse effects on human health. Cooking emission is one of the major indoor sources. Aiming to evaluate health risks associated with inhalation exposure to aldehyde and ketone compounds, 13 carbonyl compounds (CCs) released from heating 5 edible oils, 3 seasonings, and 2 dishes were investigated in a kitchen laboratory. For the scenarios of heating five types of oil, aldehydes accounted for 61.1%-78.0% of the total emission, mainly acetaldehyde, acrolein and hexanal. Comparatively, heating oil with added seasonings released greater concentrations of aldehyde and ketone compounds. The concentration enhancement of larger molecular aldehydes was significantly greater. The emission factors of aldehyde and ketone compounds for cooking the dish of chili fried meat were much greater compared to that of tomato fried eggs. Therefore, food materials also had a great impact on the aldehyde and ketone emissions. Acetone and acetaldehyde were the most abundant CCs in the kitchen. Acrolein concentrations ranged from 235.18 to 498.71 µg/m3, which was about 100 times greater compared to the guidelines provided by Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA). The acetaldehyde inhalation for adults was 856.83-1515.55 µg and 56.23-192.79 µg from exposure to chili fried meat and tomato fried eggs, respectively. This exceeds the reference value of 90 µg/day provided by OEHHA. The findings of this study provided scientific evidences for the roles of cooking emissions on indoor air quality and human health.
Analytical chemistry of carbonyl compounds in indoor air

Abstract:Carbonyl compounds are ubiquitous in outdoor and indoor air. Due to the high electronegativity of the oxygen atom, they are polar in nature and the CO group opens possibilities for many types of chemical reactions. Their physical and chemical properties are additionally influenced by substituents and conjugated double bonds. The concentration ranges are also highly variable. Formaldehyde can reach 100 ppb or more in indoor air, but reaction products such as 4-oxopentanal (4-OPA) are in the lower ppb range or even below 1 ppb. Another point concerns the dynamics of carbonyls. When examining the emission of formaldehyde in test chambers, an equilibrium concentration is usually established, so that changes over time can be neglected during the measurement. On the other hand, many substances and scenarios are subject to strong fluctuations in concentration over short time periods. The analysis is also made more difficult by the fact that different methods are often required for saturated carbonyls, unsaturated carbonyls and dicarbonyls. This work focuses on aprotic carbonyl compounds such as aldehydes, ketones, lactams and pyrones with relevance for the indoor environment that do not contain any other reactive groups. The range of interesting compounds has grown significantly in recent years, notably through the derivation of health-based guide values, as well as through investigations into new products, human activities and human emissions from the skin and respiratory gas. Classical and modern analysis methods are discussed, which can be considered for the respective research question. Many small molecules require derivatization as a first step, followed by separation via gas chromatography or HPLC. Substance-specific detection without chromatographic separation is routinely used for formaldehyde. With some limitations, the identification of carbonyls in multicomponent mixtures is possible using online mass spectrometry. In particular, proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) has established as a method with high sensitivity and high time resolution.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and carbonyl compounds were measured both indoors and outdoors in 50 residences of Beijing in heating (December, 2011) and non-heating seasons (April/May, 2012). SUMMA canisters for VOCs and diffusive samplers for carbonyl compounds were deployed for 24 h at each site, and 94 compounds were quantified. Formaldehyde, acetone and acetaldehyde were the most abundant carbonyl compounds both indoors and outdoors with indoor median concentrations being 32.1, 21.7 and 15.3 μg·m−3, respectively. Ethane (17.6 μg·m−3), toluene (14.4 μg·m−3), propane (11.2 μg·m−3), ethene (8.40 μg·m−3), n-butane (6.87 μg·m−3), and benzene (5.95 μg·m−3) showed the high median concentrations in indoor air. Dichloromethane, pdichlorobenzene (p-DCB) and toluene exhibited extremely high levels in some residences, which were related with a number of indoor emission sources. Moreover, isoprene, pdichlorobenzene and carbonyls showed median indoor/ outdoor (I/O) ratios larger than 3, indicating their indoor sources were prevailing. Chlorinated compounds like CFCs were mainly from outdoor sources for their I/O ratios being less than 1. In addition, indoor concentrations between two sampling seasons varied with different compounds. Carbonyl compounds and some chlorinated compounds had higher concentrations in the non-heating season, while alkanes, alkenes, aromatic compounds showed an increase in the heating season. Indoor concentration of VOCs and carbonyls were influenced by locations, interior decorations and indoor activities, however the specific sources for indoor VOCs and carbonyls could not be easily identified. The findings obtained in this study would significantly enhance our understandings on the prevalent and abundant species of VOCs as well as their concentrations and sources in Beijing residences.
Characterizing Emissions of VOCs from the Initial Degradation of Kitchen Waste in Household Waste Bins of Residential Areas in Beijing

Abstract:In order to clarify the emission characteristics of VOCs during the initial degradation of kitchen waste, a year-long sampling campaign of kitchen waste in residential household municipal solid waste (HMSW) bins was conducted. A total of 93 VOCs with an average annual concentration of 2271μg/m3 were detected. Alkanes and oxygenated compounds were the dominant released from the initial degradation of kitchen waste. Seasonal and daily variations were observed, with VOC concentrations generally higher in spring (1413μg/m3) and summer (5882μg/m3) and lower in autumn (505μg/m3) and winter (1258μg/m3). In addition, peak releases occurred earlier in the spring and summer (at 6h) than in autumn and winter (at 24h). Correlation analysis showed that ambient temperature correlated significantly with alkanes and oxygenated compounds (P < 0.01). 67 substances have been found to cause odor pollution. Based on the odor index, oxygenated compounds were the most significant odor pollutants. Acetaldehyde and 2-ketone required particular concern because of its high concentration and high odor index. This study not only enriched the understanding of emissions of VOCs from MSW front-end facilities but will also provide a scientific and theoretical basis for holistic management and odor control of MSW.

Abstract:Atmospheric carbonyls were measured at a typical rural area of the North China Plain (NCP) from November 13 to December 24, 2017 to investigate the pollution characteristics, sources and environmental implications. Fifteen carbonyls were detected, and formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acetone accounted for about 81% at most. The concentration of the total carbonyls in heavily polluted days was twice more than that in clean days. In contrast to other carbonyls, m-tolualdehyde exhibited relatively high concentrations in the clean days in comparison with the polluted days. The ratios of three principal carbonyls to CO showed similar daily variations at different pollution levels with significant daytime peaks. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that the contributions of background, primary and secondary sources to three principal carbonyls showed similar variation trends from the clean level to the heavily polluted level. The OH formation rate of formaldehyde showed a similar variation trend to its photodegradation rate, reaching the peak value at noon, which is important to maintain relatively high OH levels to initiate the oxidation of various gas-phase pollutants for secondary pollutant formation at the rural site. OH radical consumption rate and ozone formation potential (OFP) calculations showed that formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were the dominant oxidative species among measured carbonyls. As for OH radical consumption, n-butyraldehyde and m-tolualdehyde were important contributors, while for ozone formation potential, n-butyraldehyde and propionaldehyde made significant contributions. In addition, the contribution of carbonyl compounds to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation was also important and needs further investigation.

Abstract:Characterizations and their primary sources of 17 carbonyls compounds in the serious air polluted summer-days of 2006 were studied by DNPH-HPLC-UV measurement methods. Results were shown as follows, acetone was found to be the most predominant carbonyls followed by formaldehyde, 2-butone and acetaldehyde, with the 24 h average concentrations of 10.84, 9.29, 8.35, 8.0 microg x m(-3) respectively, which accounted for 72.29% of total carbonyl compounds in the atmosphere. Among the four sites, the highest level of total carbonyl compounds was 59.66 microg x m(-3) at the urban site of Guangdong Provincial Centre of Environmental Monitor, the lowest was 43.51 microg x m(-3) at the rural site of Conghua. Different variation characterizations of each carbonyl compounds at there different height sites were found, and the diurnal variation was shown that the total concentration of carbonyl compounds in daytime was much higher than that of nighttime. Good correlations between formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acetone indicated that they mainly derived from the same sources, and the value that C1/C2 and C2/C3 ratios were 1.12 and 7.51 respectively implied that the important pollution sources of carbonyl compounds was vehicular exhaust in Guangzhou.

Abstract:Atmospheric carbonyls are important precursors of PM2.5 and ground-level ozone, and some carbonyls are toxic and harmful; thus, it is crucial to obtain accurate information on the ambient levels of carbonyls. However, the detection of carbonyls is difficult due to their relatively higher reactivities and chemical instabilities; therefore, accurate determination of atmospheric carbonyls is important. In this study, an analytical method for atmospheric carbonyls with high concentration or reactivity was developed, the precursor ion of each carbonyl compound was selected, and the declustering potential (DP) and entrance potential (EP) for each precursor ion were optimized. A 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine cartridge derivatization-high performance liquid chromatography/atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-mass spectrometry (DNPH-HPLC/APCI-MS) method for the determination of 30 carbonyls was established. The results showed that the linear range of 24 carbonyls was 1.2–600 ng/mL, while other 6 carbonyls was 1.2–300 ng/mL, and the detection limits of 30 carbonyls ranged from 0.092 to 0.947 ng/mL (0.005–0.049 μg/m3 with an ambient air sampling volume of 96 L). The intra-day and inter-day repeatability ranges were 0.55–4.20% and 1.40–12.48%, respectively. A preliminary application of the method was carried out in the urban area of Beijing in spring and summer of 2021, and it was found that the mean total mass concentration of 30 carbonyls was 35.894 μg/m3. This study provided additional concentration information for 14 atmospheric carbonyls, including mono-, di-, oxygen-containing and heterocyclic carbonyls, which accounted for 38% and 35% of the total mass concentration and OH radical reactivities of 30 carbonyls, respectively. This is the first investigation of simultaneous quantitative analysis of multiple atmospheric carbonyls based on commercial standard derivatives. The optimized method could provide more comprehensive information for atmospheric carbonyls and further support research concerning the role of chemical reaction processes and health effects than traditional measuring techniques.

Abstract:Abstract Atmospheric aerosol contamination has caused widespread concern about human and environmental health. However, research about VOCs as an important precursor of secondary aerosols in ambient air is still limited. In this study, VOCs at sites from three typical functional areas in Hefei, China, were monitored using GC–MS/FID. The VOCs in ambient air from different functional areas showed significantly different characteristics. The highest concentrations and the biggest diurnal difference of VOCs were found in the High-tech Zone (industrial area) with serried emission sources. Additionally, lower VOC concentration was observed in Changjiang West Road, the center area of studied city. The VOC concentration in this area is strongly related to other pollutants. The composition of VOCs at all sampling sites showed certain common characteristics, i.e., alkanes, OVOCs, and halogenated hydrocarbons account for more than 75% of the total VOCs’ quality. The High-tech Zone with the highest concentration of VOCs also has the highest proportion of alkanes. Besides, the positive matrix factorization analysis results revealed that vehicle exhaust, LPG volatilization sources, and chemical solvents were the most important VOC emission sources in Hefei. In terms of the contribution of VOC components to the OFP at the three sites, the olefins and alkynes at the Changjiang West Road site and the Science Island site contribute the most significant proportion. In contrast, the OVOCs at the High-tech Zone site contribute the largest proportion.
