Abstract:“Gel point” studies involving polyacrylic acid and certain divalent ions have been carried out. As a gelation agent, barium hydroxide was found to be more effective than strontium hydroxide, which in turn was better than calcium hydroxide. This indicates that the association between inorganic cation and polyacrylate ion is not entirely a matter of coulombic charge. However, experiments involving partial replacement of barium hydroxide by barium chloride suggest that charge is still the most important factor in the bonding. The data cannot be explained upon the basis of simple ionic equilibria.
