Abstract:IntroductionThe Lower Extremity Functional Scale is a widely used questionnaire to evaluate the functional impairment in lower extremities. To date, the Lower Extremity Functional Scale has not been translated into Turkish. The aim of this study is to translate and culturally adapt the Lower Extremity Functional Scale into a Turkish version, and evaluate the psychometric properties of this version in patients with knee injuries.Materials and methodsThe translation of the English version of the Lower Extremity Functional Scale into a Turkish version was performed using standard guidelines. Validity and reliability of Turkish version were tested in 134 patients with knee injuries. Association level between other outcomes measures (Kujala Patellofemoral Score, the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index, Lysholm Knee Scoring Scale and a Visual Analog Scale) and Turkish version of the Lower Extremity Functional Scale was analyzed to assess validation. Participants completed the questionnaire at baseline and after 2 days to test reliability.ResultsThe Turkish version of the Lower Extremity Functional Scale was showed a high degree of internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.93). ICCs were 0.96 and no floor or ceiling effects. The Lower Extremity Functional Scale had a high level of association with the Kujala Patellofemoral Score (r = 0.82), Lysholm Knee Scoring Scale (r = 0.80) and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index scores (r = 0.69) (all, p < 0.05).ConclusionThe Turkish version of the Lower Extremity Functional Scale is a valid and reliable questionnaire that can be used to evaluate functional status in Turkish speaking patients with different knee disorders.Level of evidence: III.

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale. Methods: The research is a methodological study and the study sample consisted of 399 elderly. The data collected May 15 and July 16, 2019. Abstract:Purpose This study was conducted to determine the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Resilience Scale for Young Children. Method This study used a methodological and descriptive design. The study was conducted with 210 parents of children aged 2–6 years at a Family Health Centre in Sakarya from June 2023 to January 2024. Data was collected by face-to-face interviews via a Descriptive Information Form and the Chinese Resilience Scale for Young Children. Translation processes, expert opinions, and content validity were meticulously addressed. Data analysis was utilized by IBM SPSS Statistics and AMOS 24. Result The mean age of parents was 35.85 ± 6.52 years, and 82.9% of the parents were mothers ( n = 174). The item-content validity index (I-CVI) ranged between 0.81 and 0.94, indicating a high level of agreement between the experts. The Cronbach's alpha value for the scale was 0.791. In the exploratory factor analysis, it was determined that the distribution of the items according to the sub-dimensions was consistent with the original scale. Confirmatory factor analysis results are as follows: chi-square/df = 2.395, RMSEA = 0.082, GFI = 0.842, CFI = 0.853, IFI = 0.856, RFI = 0.726, NFI = 0.776 and TLI = 0.820. Conclusion This study revealed that the Turkish scale with four sub-dimensions and 16 items is a valid and reliable tool. Practice implications It is recommended to use the Turkish version of the Resilience Scale for Young Children to assess resilience in children aged 2–6 years.

Abstract:Purpose: Listening-related fatigue (LRF) is a prominent topic of research interest. The purpose of this study is to investigate the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the 40-item Vanderbilt Fatigue Scale for Adults (TR-VFS-A-40). Method: This study included 317 adults with no hearing loss and 260 adults with hearing loss in the study group, totaling 577 adults aged 18–75 years. While 31 adults in the study group did not use any hearing technology, there were 96 hearing aid users and 123 cochlear implant (CI) users. A subset of 80 CI users completed the TR-VFS-A-40 a second time, 2 weeks later, to assess test–retest reliability. Intraclass correlation coefficients were used to assess test–retest reliability. Cronbach's alpha was used to evaluate internal consistency. To examine construct validity, a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed. For concurrent validity analysis, the Checklist Individual Strength (CIS) and TR-VFS-A-40 scores were analyzed using the Spearman correlation test. Results: Cronbach's alpha values were excellent for the total scale of .987 and the cognitive, emotional, physical, and social subscales (.953, .954, .955, and .946, respectively). Analyses of concurrent validity revealed strong and significant correlations between CIS and TR-VFS-A-40 scores, indicating a good concurrent validity. The CFA determined that the construct validity of the TR-VFS-A-40 was satisfactory. Conclusion: The TR-VFS-A-40 is a valid and reliable measure of LRF. Abstract:BACKGROUND: The Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) scale is the most widely used scale for the assessment of IADL in the elderly population. The aim of this study was to adapt the Lawton IADL Scale in Turkish and to investigate the validity and the reliability of the scale in older adults.METHODS: A total of 80 participants with a mean age of 71.6±5.8 years were included in the study. The independent living skills of the older adults were measured using Lawton IADL, Hodkinson Mental Test, Functional Independence Scale, Barthel Index, Katz Index, and visual analog scale. Lawton IADL was translated into Turkish, validated by professional reviewers, translated back into English, and then tested. Cronbach's alpha was used to measure reliability in a group of 34 participants and test-retest was performed 1 week after the first test. Pearson correlation analysis was used to show the relationship between Lawton IADL and other scales and indexes.RESULTS: Internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) value was 0.843 for the whole scale. The intraclass correlation coefficient value of the scale was 0.915.CONCLUSION: These results confirm that the Turkish version of the Lawton IADL scale has excellent reliability and validity.

Abstract:Background/aim: The measurement of self-efficacy is an important step toward improving chronic disease management, enhancing adherence to treatment, and assessing patients with chronic diseases. The purpose of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease 6-Item Scale.Materials and methods: In this methodological study, the sample consisted of 211 patients receiving chronic disease care in 2 family health centers in İstanbul, Turkey. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, concurrent validity, Cronbach’s alpha, item-total correlation, and test-retest reliability.Results: Most of the sample were women (72%), primary school graduates (41.7%), hypertensive (68.7%), and had comorbidities (68.2%). The mean age of the sample was 60.5 ± 10.9. The scale mean was 5.66 ± 2.28. Cronbach’s alpha reliability was 0.90. Item-total correlations were between 0.64–0.85 and test-retest reliability was high (R = 0.95, P < 0.001). A positive, significant correlation was found in concurrent validity. According to the results of factor analysis, the scale had a 2-dimensional structure.Conclusion: The Turkish version of the Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease 6-Item Scale is a valid and reliable instrument to assess perceived the self-efficacy level of patient with chronic disease.

Adapting the teacher formative assessment literacy scale into Turkish: Validation and reliability study

Abstract:In the present study, the Teacher Formative Assessment Literacy Scale (TFALS), developed by Yan and Pastore (2022a), was translated into Turkish to examine the factor structure and psychometric characteristics of the scale in a Turkish sample. Data was collected from 318 teachers, of whom 168 were males and 150 were females, working in different state schools in a city in the Central Anatolia Region of Türkiye. As the first step, the scale items were translated and back-translated by experts in both English and Turkish. Afterward, experts were presented with the scale to check for consistency and accuracy based on the feedback received. A pilot study was carried out to establish the linguistic equivalence of the scale, followed by an examination of its structural validity in a Turkish sample. To demonstrate evidence of the confirmed factor structure of TFALS with 22 items, the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted. The CFA results demonstrated that the three-factor model of the TFALS-Turkish-version had adequate fit indices. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of the total scale was found to be .93. The Cronbach’s alpha for each of the dimensions of TFALS was .90 for the conceptual dimension (7 items), .86 for the practical dimension (8 items), and .88 for the socio-emotional dimension (7 items). Composite reliability coefficients of the dimensions ranged from .78 to .84. The results of this study provide important evidence for the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the TFALS, confirming that it has good psychometric properties in a Turkish sample

Abstract:Background/aim: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) cause decreased quality of life due to prolonged hospital stay, loss of workforce, disabilities, psychological trauma, and increased healthcare costs. This study aims to assess the validity and reliability of the Diabetic Foot Scale-Short Form (DFS-SF) for Turkish-speaking individuals with DFUs. Materials and methods: This was a methodological study conducted with 174 Turkish patients with DFUs from March 2020 to December 2020. Translation-back translation was performed for language equivalence and expert opinions were obtained for content validity. The scale's construct validity was tested with confirmatory factor analysis, exploratory factor analysis, and known-group validity. Cronbach's alpha was used to evaluate internal consistency. Correlation of the DFS-SF with the SF-36 was used to test criterion validity. The scale was then revised according to the TRIPOD checklist. Results: The content validity index value was 0.93 and Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.93 to 0.97. The scale maintained its six-factor structure and the factor loadings ranged from 0.52 to 0.86. The fit indices of the model revealed good validity. The correlations (r = 0.43-0.76, p < 0.001) and known-group comparisons supported the construct validity. Conclusion: The Turkish version of the DFS-SF is a reliable tool for measuring the quality of life of people suffering from DFUs.

Abstract:Objective : Patients with heart failure may experience thirst distress. There is, however, no measurement tool to define patients' thirst distress in Turkey. The study aimed to determine psychometric properties of the translated Turkish version of the Thirst Distress Scale-Heart Failure (TDS-HF) in a sample of heart failure patients. Design : This methodologically planned study was conducted in two different training and research hospitals in Istanbul. Content validity, confirmatory factor analysis and concurrent validity were used in the validity analysis following the language validity analysis. Reliability coefficients were analysed by calculating Cronbach's alpha, McDonald's Omega and test-retest reliability coefficients. Validity and reliability analysis involved 116 patients, and test-retest analysis was carried out among 36 patients who volunteered to participate in the study. Results : The patients had a mean age of 55.2 ± 14.9. The factor structure and the examined fit indices of the one-dimensional eight-item scale indicated that the Turkish version of the scale was consistent with the original model. Item-total correlations were between 0.84 and 0.93, Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.90, the test-retest reliability coefficient was 0.97 and the McDonald's omega coefficient was 0.93, demonstrating that the scale is highly reliable. Conclusion : The Turkish version of the Thirst Distress Scale-Heart Failure was found to be valid and reliable.

Abstract:Background: Prosthetic embodiment is the perception of the prosthesis as a part of the body, and it is important for acceptance and adequate and effective use of the prosthesis. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Prosthesis Embodiment Scale for Lower Limb Amputees. Methods: This cross-sectional study included a total of 88 lower limb amputees. Internal consistency was evaluated using Cronbach α coefficient. The test-retest reliability of the scale, which was reapplied after 7–10 d, was evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficient. Principal component analysis with Varimax rotation was used to analyze the factor structure. Spearman correlation coefficient with Trinity Amputation and Prosthesis Experience Scale subscales was calculated for concurrent validity. Results: The mean age of the participants was 45.13 ± 15.05 years, and 76.1% were male. Internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.905) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.822) were high. 76.1% of the total variance could be explained by the 3 dimensions. Significant correlation was found with the Trinity Amputation and Prosthesis Experience Scale subscales (r = 0.542 for psychosocial adjustment subscale, r = −0.452 for activity restriction subscale, r = 0.490 for prosthesis satisfaction subscale, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The results of this study showed that the Turkish version of the Prosthesis Embodiment Scale for Lower Limb Amputees is a valid and reliable tool that can be used to evaluate prosthetic rehabilitation outcomes.

Translation and Cross-Cultural Adaptation of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament Donor Site Morbidity Questionnaire Into Turkish

Abstract:This study aimed to translate the ACL Donor Site Morbidity (ACL-DSM) questionnaire into Turkish and assess the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the ACL-DSM questionnaire (ACL-DSM-Tr) among individuals following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. The process involved forward and back-translation, cultural adaptation, and validation of the ACL-DSM-Tr questionnaire on ninety-nine patients (mean age 30.73 ± 8.55 years). Participants completed ACL-DSM-Tr, International Knee Documentary Committee (IKDC) subjective form, ACL Return to Sport (ACL-RSI), and Forgotten Joint Scale (FJS) questionnaires. The internal consistency, reliability, and validity of the ACL-DSM-Tr were analyzed. The ACL-DSM-Tr demonstrated a high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha .755) and excellent test-retest reliability (Spearman correlation r = .811, p < .001; Cronbach's alpha .890). The ACL-DSM-Tr score exhibited a strong positive correlation with the IKDC score (r = .690, p < .001) and a moderate positive correlation with the FJS score (r = .535, p < .001). Despite a fair correlation between ACL-DSM-Tr and ACL- RSI subgroup scores, no significant correlation was observed with the ACL-RSI total score (p = .297). In conclusion, the ACL-DSM-Tr demonstrated internal consistency, reliability, and validity in patients with ACL reconstruction. This questionnaire has the potential to yield significant benefits in monitoring patient satisfaction and evaluating the level of comfort experienced at the donor site following ACL reconstruction.

Abstract:Background: Older patients with diabetes have behaviors and practices in foot care that differ from those of younger patients. There is a need for a tool to assess the foot care of patients with diabetes who are over the age of 65 years. Purpose: This study aimed to assess the validity and reliability of the long and short versions of the Foot Care Scale for Older Diabetics (FCS-OD) in Turkish society. Methods: A total of 172 older patients with diabetes participated in the study. Language validity, content validity, construct validity, Cronbach’s alpha coefficient value, item-scale correlations, parallel form reliability, and test-retest correlations were used to assess the Turkish version of FCS-OD. A patient identification form, FCS-OD, Diabetic Foot Care Self-Efficacy Scale, and Foot Self-Care Behavior Scale were used for data collection. Results: Turkish versions of the FCS-OD, both short and long versions, were at acceptable levels regarding their content (content validity index: 0.964, 0.975) and construct (factor loadings > 0.4). Both versions of the scale showed a high level of internal consistency as demonstrated by Cronbach’s alpha values (short version, 0.802; long version, 0.905) and item-scale correlations (> 0.3). Both versions of the scale were stable over time and compared to the parallel forms. Conclusions: Both versions of the scale were found to be valid and reliable for Turkish society with regard to psychometric properties.

Abstract:Summary Objectives A comprehensive evaluation is necessary for voice-related complaints, as it can benefit both the patient and physician in busy clinical settings. This study aimed to examine the Turkish adaptation of the Glottal Function Index (GFI-T), which can be quickly administered. Study designs Phase 1 methodological, phase 2 prospective cohort. Methods This study was conducted in two phases. Firstly, the GFI was translated into Turkish, and its content validity was examined. The GFI-T was administered to 40 participants with voice disorders ( M = 41.3, SD = 10) in the study group and 40 participants without voice disorders ( M = 37.5, SD = 11.3) in the control group. Then GFI-T was readministered 2 weeks later. The collected data were used for structural and convergent validity [correlation with Turkish version of the Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10)], internal consistency, and test-retest reliability analyses. Secondly, 24 participants with vocal nodules were recruited separately from the first phase and were randomly divided into three groups. The first group underwent lax-vox therapy + vocal hygiene, the second group underwent resonance therapy + vocal hygiene, and the third group was provided only with vocal hygiene recommendations. The discriminative ability and construct validity of the GFI-T were examined by comparing pre- and post-assessments. Results The results indicated that the content validity indexes were 0.98 in the experts and 0.99 in the participants. Confirmatory factor analysis of the scale confirmed that a single-factor structure and goodness-of-fit indices were suitable. The GFI-T correlated 0.92 with the Turkish version of the VHI-10. The internal consistency was 0.96, and the test-retest value was 0.99. Significant differences ( P < 0.001) and correlations with the Turkish version of VHI-10 were found in intragroup comparisons. Conclusions The GFI-T is a reliable and valid tool for the self-assessment of voice disorders. The adaptation of this study to the pediatric population is recommended.

Validity and reliability study of the quality of recovery scale in Turkish

Abstract:Background/aim: The aim of this study was to adapt the "Quality of Recovery-15 Scale", developed to measure the postoperative recovery quality of individuals, into Turkish by carrying out validity and reliability studies. Materials and methods: This methodological study was conducted with a total of 150 patients who underwent surgery under general anesthesia between November 2021 and January 2022 in a training and research hospital in the Black Sea region. Data was collected from the patients through the face-to-face interview method before the operation, on the 24th and the 48th hour postoperatively. First, the linguistic validity of the scale and then the validity and reliability analyses were carried out. Construct validity, confirmatory factor, and reliability analyses were then performed. Results: The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the scale was 0.851. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin test for goodness of fit of the one-dimensional 14-item scale was 0.853 and Bartlett's test was significant. The goodness of fit values of the scale were found to be RMSEA = 0.149, CFI = 0.769, and GFI = 0.745, and they were considered acceptable levels. The eighth item was removed from the scale, which had originally consisted of 15 items, because the item correlation coefficient of this item was <0.200. Conclusion: The "Quality of Recovery Scale" was found to be a reliable and valid scale that can be used to measure the quality of recovery after surgery in Turkish society.

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this study was to linguistically and culturally adapt the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) for use in Turkey, and to examine the psychometric properties of this adapted version. Method: The cross-cultural adaptation was achieved by translating the items from the original version, with back-translation performed by independent mother-tongue translators, followed by committee review. Reliability (internal consistency and test-retest) was examined for 198 participants who completed the NMQ twice (with a 1 week interval). Construct validity was examined with data from 126 participants from the same population, who completed further four questionnaires related to the body regions described in the NMQ. Results: The internal consistency was excellent (Cronbach's alpha = 0.896). The test-retest reliability was examined with the prevalence-adjusted bias-adjusted kappa (PABAK) and all items showed moderate to almost perfect reliability (PABAK = 0.57-0.90). Participants with a musculoskeletal problem in a related region had significantly more disability/pain, as assessed by the relevant questionnaires (p < 0.001), indicating that the NMQ had a good construct validity. Conclusions: This study provided considerable evidence that the Turkish version of the NMQ has appropriate psychometric properties, including good test-retest reliability, internal consistency and construct validity. It can be used for screening and epidemiological investigations of musculoskeletal symptoms. Implications for Rehabilitation The Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) can be used for the screening of musculoskeletal problems. The NMQ allows comparison of musculoskeletal problems in different body regions in epidemiological studies with large numbers of participants. The Turkish version of the NMQ can be used for rehabilitation due to its appropriate psychometric properties, including good test-retest reliability, internal consistency and construct validity.

Abstract:Background: The Osteoarthritis Knowledge Scale (OAKS) is a validated tool for assessing knowledge about hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA). However, to date, there has been no translation and adaptation of the OAKS for the Turkish population. Objectives: To translate and cross-culturally adapt the OAKS into Turkish and to assess its psychometric properties in the Turkish population with and without hip or knee OA. Methods: The OAKS was translated following accepted guidelines. A validation study assessed internal consistency, test-retest reliability and measurement error. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted to assess the factor structure. Results: A total of 278 participants (n = 70 with hip OA, n = 105 with knee OA, and n = 103 without OA) were included. Internal consistency was 0.72, 0.79 and 0.79 for participants with hip OA, knee OA, and no OA, respectively. The test-retest intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.72 (95% CI; 0.45-0.85), 0.89 (95% CI; 0.82-0.93) and 0.88 (95% CI; 0.79-0.93) for participants with hip OA, knee OA and no OA, respectively. It had three principal components accounting for 57.2% of the total variance. Conclusions: The Turkish version of the OAKS is a reliable and valid tool for measuring OA knowledge in the Turkish population, including those with and without hip and knee OA. Test-retest reliability was below acceptable levels in the population with hip OA only. Therefore, we recommend that the ICC be interpreted with caution when used in this population.

Abstract:Background/aim: Considering that there is no specifically designed scale to measure quality of life (QoL) and level of functioning among Turkish-speaking patients with thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS), the aim of this study was to adapt the Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Index (TOSI) to the Turkish language (TOSI-TR) and analyze its psychometric properties in patients with TOS. Materials and methods: Thirty-nine patients with symptomatic TOS were included in the study. The participants were assessed using the following measures: the QuickDASH, the Western Ontario Rotator Cuff Index (WORC), and a visual analog scale (VAS). The psychometric properties of the TOSI-TR were examined in terms of test-retest reliability, construct validity, convergent validity, and feasibility. Results: The ICC2,1 of the TOSI-TR was 0.949 (95% CI: 0.903-0.973). The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin value was found to be 0.716 with a significant result for Bartlett's sphericity test (p < 0.001). The TOSI-TR had a one-factor solution explaining 74.05% of the total variance. There was a significant correlation between TOSI-TR scores and QuickDASH (r = 0.762, p < 0.001), WORC (r =0.794, p < 0.001), and VAS (r = 0.663, p < 0.001) scores. The WORC and VAS scores were significant determinants of the TOSI-TR score, explaining 65.3% of the variance. There were no floor or ceiling effects. Conclusion: The TOSI-TR is a reliable, valid, and feasible questionnaire for the QoL and functional status in Turkish-speaking patients with TOS. We recommend this 15-item scale for optimal assessment in patients with TOS.
