Abstract:The application of heterogeneous catalysts in dimethyl carbonate (DMC) synthesis from methanol is hindered by low activation efficiency of methanol to methoxy intermediates (CH3O*), which is the key intermediate for DMC generation. Herein, a catalyst of alkali metal K anchored on the CuO/ZnO oxide is rationally designed for offering Lewis acid–base pairs as dual active centers to improve the activation efficiency of methanol. Characterizations of CO2‐TPD, NH3‐TPD, XPS, and DRIFTS revealed that the addition of Lewis base K observably boosted the dissociation of methanol and combined with Lewis acid CuO/ZnO oxide to adsorb the formed CH3O* stably, thus synergistically promoted the transesterification. Finally, the CuO/ZnO‐9%K2O catalyst exhibited the optimal catalytic activity, achieving a high yield of 74.4% with an excellent selectivity of 98.9% for DMC at a low temperature of 90°C. The strategy of constructing Lewis acid–base pairs provides a reference for the design of heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:The synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO2 and methanol is an effective route of CO2 utilization. In this work, CeO2 nanorods prepared by hydrothermal synthesis using various drying methods were compared. Among them CeO2 prepared by freeze drying (CeO2-FD) had the highest and unprecedented catalytic effects, with DMC yield of 873 mmol g(-1) cat and methanol conversion of 51.6 % at 140 degrees C and 3.5 MPa for 4 h. All CeO2 nanorods catalysts have been extensively characterized and the results showed that CeO2-FD had the largest specific surface area (90.7 m(2) g (1)), pore volume, oxygen vacancy concentration (44.53%), and acid-base active site (189.4 vs 37.2 mmol g (1)). The surface properties of CeO2 nanoparticles were greatly affected by the lower absolute pressure and the use of water as a template agent in freeze-drying. For the first time, the kinetic model of sequential reaction with a dehydrating agent was deduced by Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism. The activation energy barrier was 20 +/- 3.3 kJ mol (1) using the Arrhenius formula. (C) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A basic ionic liquid, namely choline hydroxide, was prepared and supported on MgO to form Choline hydroxide/MgO material. The supported ionic liquid material was characterized by XRD, FT–IR and TG and used as a catalyst in one-pot synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from propylene oxide, methanol and carbon dioxide. A good catalytic performance was obtained with 98% conversion of epoxide and selectivity of above 90% to DMC + PC over the composite catalyst. However, the catalyst could be reused three times without a significant change in its catalytic activity.

Abstract:The Ca–Al oxide catalysts are prepared via thermal decomposition of Ca–Al layered double hydroxide precursors and characterized by XRD, TG, SEM, BET, CO2-TPD, Hammett indicators, XPS and ICP techniques. The obtained catalysts are then tested for transesterification of methanol with propylene carbonate (PC), highest dimethyl carbonate (DMC) yield of 59.9% has been reached with methanol: PC molar ratio of 12, catalysts weight of 2 wt% total reactants, and reaction time of 2 h. Research results show that though the transesterification occurs over various basic sites, the strong basic site has a leading role on transesterification, which is consistent with the activity results. Abstract:Direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO2 and CH3OH holds significant economic and environmental value. Numerous catalysts have been employed for this reaction, yet further enhancement of its activity requires a deeper understanding of the catalyst's structure-activity relationship and catalytic mechanism. In this study, we utilized structurally well-defined and highly tunable MOF-808 as a research platform. Functionalizing MOF-808 with ethylenediamine (MOF-808-ED) boosted the space time yield of DMC from 3.25 mmol·g-1·h-1 to 7.23 mmol·g-1·h-1. Experimental results demonstrate that the reaction involves acid-base synergistic catalysis, where an appropriate balance of acid-base sites content is crucial for CO2 and CH3OH to produce DMC, as it facilitates the formation of the key intermediates (CH3OCOO*). Additionally, the nucleophilicity of N is stronger than that of O, further promoting the catalyst's enrichment and activation of CO2. Finally, employing in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) testing, we elucidated the mechanism by which the MOF-808-ED catalyst, with -NH2 as base sites and Zr as acid sites, facilitates the synergistic catalysis of the reaction. This study provides insights into the synergistic effects of acid-base sites on the synthesis of DMC from CO2 and methanol, offering valuable guidance for the development of high-performance catalysts.

Abstract:A series of hydroxyl-functionalized basic ionic liquids were synthesized and used as catalysts and reaction medium for direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanol and carbon dioxide. The hydroxyl-functionalized basic ionic liquid, namely choline hydroxide (CH) is an effective catalyst with high selectivity (95.2%) to DMC under mild conditions as compared with other similar ionic liquids. The ionic liquid can be reused three times without a significant change in its catalytic activity. Furthermore, the relationship between the catalytic reactivity and OH-functional group was discussed and the mechanism of this synthetic reaction was proposed according to the experimental results and previously reported literatures.

Abstract:A series of KF/Mg‐Fe oxides were fabricated via the solid‐state reaction between KF and Mg‐Fe oxides. Especially, when 20 wt.% KF was supported on the Mg‐Fe bi‐metal oxides and calcined at 400‐600 °C, the solid material with more basic sites than the support itself was obtained. When applied as catalyst to dimethyl carbonate (DMC) synthesis through transesterification of ethylene carbonate (EC) and methanol, this material can afforded up to 88% yield and 97% selectivity toward DMC in 2 h under reflux conditions with the molar ratio of methanol to ethylene carbonate set at 8. It is worth noting that the catalyst was easily separated and reused, retaining at least 89% catalytic activity during the first four recycles. Although an attenuated activity was still observed due to the inevitable filtration loss and dissolution, this solid base can still provide clues to the development recyclable catalyst in green synthesis of DMC.

Efficient Synthesis of Dimethyl Carbonate Via Transesterification of Ethylene Carbonate over A New Mesoporous Ceria Catalyst

Abstract:Mesoporous ceria materials (CeO2-meso) have been prepared through a soft-templating method using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as a template and cerium nitrate as a precursor. The synthesized CeO2-meso materials possess narrow pore size distributions of 5.1-5.4 nm and tunable surface areas (109-182 m(2) g(-1)). As heterogeneous catalysts in the transesterification of ethylene carbonate (EC) with methanol to dimethyl carbonate (DMC), CeO2-meso materials demonstrate superior catalytic performance to the commercial ceria. N-2 adsorption-desorption and CO2-TPD characterization results indicate that the catalytic activity obtained over various CeO2-meso samples depends on their surface areas and basicity. The highest activity is achieved over CeO2-meso-400, affording a DMC yield as much as 73.3%, together with excellent recycling ability. Besides the transesterification of EC with methanol, CeO2-meso is found to be able to catalyze the reactions of other cyclic carbonates and alcohols. In view of the high catalytic performance along with the convenience in catalyst preparation, CeO2-meso-400 compares favorably with the ionic liquids as well as other ceria-based catalytic systems. Abstract:Current dimethyl carbonate(DMC) synthesis catalysts via liquid-phase oxidative carbonylation of methanol include three catalytic systems:supported copper catalysts,cobalt complex catalysts and Cu-Pd systems,among which supported CuCl catalysts has been commercialized.Problems with CuCl catalysts include deterioration of the activity due to loss of Cl~-and consequent corrosion of downstream equipment,which are usually solved by stabilization of Cl~-via introducing ligands or promoters.Replacing Cl~-by other anions is a trend in this field and has promising prospect for commercial(application).

Abstract:The transesterification reaction between ethylene carbonate (EC) and methanol is a sustainable method to produce dimethyl carbonate (DMC). As typical solid bases, carbon nitride (CN) materials have demonstrated catalytic application in many base-catalyzing reactions. In this work, in order to increase the surface area and improve the base intensity of the CN material, microporous MCM-22 was utilized to load CN, and then treated by NaOH (a.q.), thus enabling CN/MCM-22 composites being transferred into mesoporous CN-SiAlO materials. The physicochemical properties of the synthesized materials were analyzed by XRD, N 2 adsorption–desorption, FT-IR, XPS, SEM, TG, and CO 2 -TPD. As mesoporous base catalysts, the CN-SiAlO materials showed superior catalytic activity to the bare CN and CN/MCM-22 in the transesterification reaction of EC with methanol. Under reaction temperature of 130 °C and reaction time of 3 h, the yield of DMC was up to 83.3%.

Abstract:A new type of homogeneous catalyst for dimethyl carbonate (DMC) synthesis by oxidative carbonylation of methanol in the liquid-phase reaction was investigated. The polymer-bound monometallic PVP-CuCl2 catalyst (PVP, poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone)) prepared by the combination of an alcoholic solutions of PVP and CuCl2 exhibits excellent catalytic performance for the oxidative carbonylation of methanol with carbon monoxide and oxygen to DMC under 3.0MPa (PO2=0.24MPa and PCO=2.76MPa) pressure at temperature around 140–160°C. The catalyst exhibits much higher activity and selectivity than non-supported CuCl2 in the DMC synthesis reaction. The remarkable increase in the conversion and selectivity is attributed to the presence of a strong complexation effect between Cu(II) and the amide ligands in the polymer chains.
Application of Mesoporous Carbon-Based Highly Dispersed K-O2 Strong Lewis Base in the Efficient Catalysis of Methanol and Ethylene Carbonate

Abstract:As an atom-economical reaction, the direct generation of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and ethylene glycol (EG) via the transesterification of CH3OH and ethylene carbonate (EC) has several promising applications, but the exploration of carriers with high specific surface areas and novel heterogeneous catalysts with more basic sites remains a long-standing research challenge. For this purpose, herein, a nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon (NMC, 439 m2/g) based K-O2 Lewis base catalyst (K-O2/NMC) with well-dispersed strongly basic sites (2.23 mmol/g, 84.5%) was designed and synthesized. The compositions and structures of NMC and K-O2/NMC were comprehensively investigated via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, N2 adsorption-desorption, CO2 temperature-programmed desorption, and contact angle measurements. The optimal structural configuration and electron cloud distribution of the K-O2/NMC catalyst were simulated using first-principles calculations. The electron transfer predominantly manifested as a flow from K-O to C-O/C-N, and the interatomic interactions between each atom were enhanced and exhibited a tendency for a more stable state after redistribution. Furthermore, the adsorption energies (Eads) of CH3OH at K-O-O and K-O-N sites were -1.4185 eV and -1.3377 eV, respectively, and the O atom in CH3OH exhibited a stronger adsorption tendency for the K atom at the K-O-O site. Under the optimal conditions, the EC conversion, DMC/EG selectivity, and turnover number/frequency were 80.9%, 98.6%/99.4%, and 40.5/60.8 h-1, respectively, with a reaction rate constant (k) of 0.1005 mol/(L·min). Results showed that the heterogeneous K-O2/NMC catalyst prepared herein greatly reduced the reaction cost while guaranteeing the catalytic effect, and the whole system required a lower reaction temperature (65 °C), a shorter reaction time (40 min), and a lower catalyst amount (2.0 wt % of EC). Therefore, K-O2/NMC can be used as a catalyst in different transesterification reactions.

Abstract:The reaction thermodynamics of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) synthesis from CH3OH and CO2 was investigated by estimating ΔrH and ΔrG of the reaction at different temperatures and pressure. The result shows that the reaction does not spontaneously occur under finite conditions in view of thermodynamics. Thus, in order to seek a new method or a novel idea for the DMC synthesis, the thermodynamics of DMC synthesis catalyzed by basic catalysts, K2CO3, KOH and CH3OK, was discussed in details. A general conclusion was obtained that the subroutine nesting of a coupling reaction is an effective avenue to increase the yield of DMC synthesis from CO2 and CH3OH.

Abstract:The direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO2 and methanol is a green synthetic route owing to nontoxicity of starting materials and synthetic process. DMC is widely used as a nontoxic solvent, effective fuel additive, and synthetic intermediate in medicine, pharmaceutics, chemistry and other fields. The key challenge is to design efficient and stable catalysts, which mainly includes ionic liquids, alkali carbonates, transition metal oxides, heteropoly acids, supported catalysts. The problems of low yield and difficulties in experiments have not been fundamentally solved. Electro-assist synthesis that provides extra energy for CO2 activation is tried and membranes reactor that separates products in time to increase DMC yield is also studied. Dehydrant catalysts with in-situ hydration for water removal can significantly improve DMC yield and catalysts stability because chemical equilibrium shifts substantially and the catalysts deactivation by produced water poisoning is avoided. This direction will have a considerable breakthrough when appropriate combination of catalysts and dehydrant is obtained.

Synthesis and characterization of TiO2-V2O5-MCM-41 for catalyzing transesterification of dimethyl carbonate with phenol

Abstract:A series of TiO2-V2O5-MCM-41 molecular sieve catalysts were prepared by the impregnation method. The prepared catalysts were characterized by different techniques including X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and N2 adsorption-desorption. These catalysts were applied in the catalytic synthesis of diphenyl carbonate (DPC) by the transesterification of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) with phenol. The synthesis results indicated that the catalysts possessed the high specific surface area and large pore volume and included titanium with four ligands. Due to the vanadium introduction into Ti-MCM-41, the catalytic activity was promoted, by-products were reduced, and the catalytic activity and stability of the catalyst were significantly improved. With 10%V-20%Ti-MCM-41 catalyst, the optimal synthesis results including the conversion rate of DMC of 33.88%, the selectivity of DPC of 35.84%, and the yield of DPC of 12.14% were obtained.

Abstract:The direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanol and carbon dioxide using potassium methoxide as a catalyst in the presence of CH3I was investigated. The results showed that CH3OK is an effective catalyst; the raised yield (16.2%) and high selectivity (100%) of DMC formation under mild conditions were achieved. The effect of the reaction conditions, such as reaction temperature, pressure of carbon dioxide, the molar ratio of potassium methoxide to methanol and the amount of methyl iodide, on the reaction is discussed. The roles of the potassium methoxide and methyl iodide were explored, that is, the former acts as a catalyst, and the latter does as a promoter to the formation of DMC from CH3OH and CO2. In addition, the reaction mechanism was proposed according to the results obtained in the catalytic reaction.

Ionic Liquid Immobilized on Mesocellular Silica Foam As an Efficient Heterogeneous Catalyst for the Synthesis of Dimethyl Carbonate Via Transesterification

Abstract:Functionalized basic ionic liquid, 1-(triethoxysilyl) propyl-3-methylimidazolium hydroxide ([SmIm]OH) was immobilized on the mesocellular silica foams (MCF) material and then applied in the catalytic synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) via transesterification of ethylene carbonate (EC) with methanol (MeOH). Combined characterization results of FT-IR, Si-29 NMR, N-2 adsorption-desorption, and TEM suggest that [SmIm]OH has been successfully grafted on the MCF material, and the three-dimensional mesoporosity with large pore size (similar to 34 nm) of MCF has been well retained during the immobilization procedure. The influences of reaction temperature, time, and the molar ratio of MeOH/EC have also been investigated in detail. The catalytic tests demonstrated that MCF-[SmIm]OH could catalyze the transesterification of EC and MeOH with high efficiency, allowing a stable and high DMC yield as much as 83% under mild reaction conditions, superior to those results of the heterogeneous catalysts reported previously. Abstract:A series of hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquids such as dialkyl (or alkyl) di-(tri-) hydroxyethyl ammonium hydroxide, tetrahydroxyethyl ammonium hydroxide and allcylhydroxyethyl or dihydroxyethyl immidazolium hydroxide were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR and H-1 NMR. These ionic liquids containing hydroxyls were used as catalysts for direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanol and carbon dioxide. The results showed that benzylmethyldihydroxyethyl ammonium hydroxide (BzMDH) is an effect catalyst with raised catalytic activity and high selectivity to DMC. Abstract:Mesostructured graphitic carbon nitride (CN-MCF) material has been prepared using carbon tetrachloride and ethylenediamine as precursors and mesocellular silica foam as a hard template, and characterized by XRD, N-2 adsorption-desorption, TEM, FT-IR, and XPS techniques. The material was employed as a catalyst for the production of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) via transesterification of ethylene carbonate (EC) with methanol (MeOH). The influences of reaction conditions, including time, temperature, and the molar ratios of MeOH to EC, on the catalytic performance have been investigated in detail. Catalytic results revealed that CN-MCF could catalyze the transesterification reaction with high efficiency, affording a high DMC yield of 78% and stable catalytic activity for several running cycles. Furthermore, a possible reaction mechanism for the g-CN-catalyzing transesterification of EC with MeOH has been proposed.
