Abstract:The thermal gas-phase reactions of S+, S-2(+) and S-2(2+) with methane have been explored by using quadrupole-ion trap (Q-IT) mass spectrometry complemented by quantum chemical calculations. In contrast to the reactiveness of the S+/CH4 and S-2(2+)/CH4 couples as identified by experiment and computation, respectively, the S-2(+)/CH4 couple is inert at ambient temperature. Interestingly, the hydrogen-atom transfer (HAT) prevails for S+/CH4 and proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) for S-2(+)/CH4, while both PCET and hydride transfer (HT) are accessible for S-2(2+)/CH4. Multiple factors matter for these processes. The electronic origins of the different reactivities of the three ions have been interrogated.

Abstract:The chemical potential of a component in a solution is defined as the free energy change as the amount of that component changes. Computing this fundamental thermodynamic property from atomistic simulations is notoriously difficult because of the convergence issues involved in free energy methods and finite size effects. This Communication presents the so-called S0 method, which can be used to obtain chemical potentials from static structure factors computed from equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations under the isothermal–isobaric ensemble. This new method is demonstrated on the systems of binary Lennard-Jones particles, urea–water mixtures, a NaCl aqueous solution, and a high-pressure carbon–hydrogen mixture.

Abstract:We have calculated the thermochemical parameters for the reactions H2SO4 + H2O <-> H2SO4 center dot H2O and H2SO4 + NH3 <-> H2SO4 center dot NH3 using the B3LYP and PW91 functionals, MP2 perturbation theory and four different basis sets. Different methods and basis sets yield very different results with respect to, for example, the reaction free energies. A large part, but not all, of these differences are caused by basis set superposition error (BSSE), which is on the order of 1-3 kcal mol(-1) for most method/basis set combinations used in previous studies. Complete basis set extrapolation (CBS) calculations using the cc-pV(X + d) Z and aug-cc-pV( X + d) Z basis sets ( with X = D, T, Q) at the B3LYP level indicate that if BSSE errors of less than 0.2 kcal mol(-1) are desired in uncorrected calculations, basis sets of at least aug-cc-pV(T + d) Z quality should be used. The use of additional augmented basis functions is also shown to be important, as the BSSE error is significant for the nonaugmented basis sets even at the quadruple-zeta level. The effect of anharmonic corrections to the zero-point energies and thermal contributions to the free energy are shown to be around 0.4 kcal mol(-1) for the H2SO4 center dot H2O cluster at 298 K. Single-point CCSD(T) calculations for the H2SO4 center dot H2O cluster also indicate that B3LYP and MP2 calculations reproduce the CCSD( T) energies well, whereas the PW91 results are significantly overbinding. However, basis-set limit extrapolations at the CCSD(T) level indicate that the B3LYP binding energies are too low by ca. 1-2 kcal/mol. This probably explains the difference of about 2 kcal mol(-1) for the free energy of the H2SO4 + H2O <-> H2SO4 center dot H2O reaction between the counterpoise-corrected B3LYP calculations with large basis sets and the diffusion-based experimental values of S. M. Ball, D. R. Hanson, F. L Eisele and P. H. McMurry (J. Phys. Chem. A. 2000, 104, 1715). Topological analysis of the electronic charge density based on the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) shows that different method/basis set combinations lead to qualitatively different bonding patterns for the H2SO4 center dot NH3 cluster. Using QTAIM analysis, we have also defined a proton transfer degree parameter which may be useful in further studies.

Abstract:A Helmholtz energy equation of state with independent variables of temperature and density was developed for sulfur dioxide (SO2) based on thermodynamic property data from the literature. The equation of state is valid from the triple-point temperature of 197.7 to 525 K, with pressures up to 35 MPa and densities up to 25.4 mol·dm–3. The uncertainties in density of the equation of state are 0.1% in the liquid phase, 0.25% in the vapor phase, and 1% in the critical region. The uncertainty in vapor pressure is 0.2% and the uncertainty in saturated liquid density is 0.2% below 410 K. The uncertainty in isobaric heat capacity is 2% between 200 and 290 K. In the critical region, the uncertainties are higher for all properties except for vapor pressure. The behavior of the equation of state is correct not only within the region of validity, but also at high temperatures and pressures, and far below the triple-point temperature.
High-accuracy theoretical thermochemistry of atmospherically important sulfur-containing molecules

Abstract:In this study, several sulfur-containing molecules with atmospherical importance were investigated by means of high-accuracy quantum chemical calculations including: HSO, HOS, HOSO2, HSNO, SH, CH2SO, CH2SH, S2COH, and SCSOH. After identifying the stable conformers of the molecules, a coupled-cluster-based composite model chemistry, which includes contributions up to quadruple excitations as well as corrections beyond the nonrelativistic and Born–Oppenheimer approximations, was applied to calculate the corresponding heat of formation (Δ(f)H(0)° and Δ(f)H(298)°) and entropy (S(298)°) values. In most of the cases, this study delivers more reliable estimates for the investigated thermodynamic properties than those reported in previous investigations. Our data also suggest that the experimental heats of formation associated with the HSO molecule are very likely to belong to its structural isomer, HOS. It is also confirmed by the calculated thermodynamic properties including standard reaction entropies, enthalpies, and equilibrium constants that, in the reaction CS2 + OH CS2OH, the SCSOH structural isomer is produced. It is also noted that the currently accepted Δ(f)H(0)°(S(gas)) = 274.73 ± 0.3 kJ/mol value is in need of revision, and based on a recent measurement, which is also confirmed by our computations, it is advised to update it to Δ(f)H(0)°(S(gas)) = 277.25 ± 0.3 kJ/mol.

Abstract:The chemical potential of adsorbed or confined fluids provides insight into their unique thermodynamic properties and determines adsorption isotherms. However, it is often difficult to compute this quantity from atomistic simulations using existing statistical mechanical methods. We introduce a computational framework that utilizes static structure factors, thermodynamic integration and free energy perturbation, for calculating the absolute chemical potential of fluids. For demonstration, we apply the method to compute the adsorption isotherms of carbon dioxide in a metal-organic framework (MOF) and water in carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:Sulfur-containing fuels, such as petroleum fuels, natural gas, and biofuels, produce SO2, SO3, and other highly toxic gases upon combustion, which are harmful to human health and the environment, making it essential to understand their thermochemical properties. This study used high-level quantum chemistry calculations to determine thermodynamic parameters, including entropy, enthalpy, and specific heat capacity for an extensive set of sulfur-containing species. The B3LYP/cc-pVTZ level of theory was used for geometry optimization, vibration frequency, and dihedral scan calculations. To determine an appropriate ab initio method for energy calculation, the Bland-Altman diagram, a statistical analysis method, was employed to visualize the 298 K enthalpy value between experimental data and three sets of ab initio methods: G3, CBS-QB3, and the average of G3 plus CBS-QB3. The CBS-QB3 method exhibited the highest accuracy and was eventually selected for the energy calculation in this study. Thermochemical property parameters were then calculated with the MultiWell program suite for all these sulfur-containing species, and the results were in good agreement with the thermochemical data of organic compounds and the National Institute of Standards and Technology Chemistry WebBook databases. The thermochemical property database established in this study is essential to studying sulfur-containing species in desulfurization.
Partitioning of Sulfur Between Solid and Liquid Iron under Earth’s Core Conditions: Constraints from Atomistic Simulations with Machine Learning Potentials

Abstract:Partition coefficients of light elements between the solid and liquid iron phases are crucial for uncovering the state and dynamics of the Earth's core. As one of the major light element candidates, sulfur has attracted extensive interests for measuring its partitioning and phase behaviors over the last several decades, but the relevant experimental data under Earth's core conditions are still scarce. In this study, using a toolkit consisting of electronic structure theory, high-accuracy machine learning potentials and rigorous free energy calculations, we establish an efficient and extendible framework for predicting complex phase behaviors of iron alloys under extreme conditions. As a first application of this framework, we predict the partition coefficients of sulfur over wide range of temperatures and pressures (from 4000 K, 150 GPa to 6000 K, 330 GPa), which are demonstrated to be in good agreement with previous experiments and ab initio simulations. After a continuous increase below similar to 250 GPa, the partition coefficient is found to be around 0.75 +/- 0.07 at higher pressures and are essentially temperature-independent. Given these predictions, the partitioning of sulfur is confirmed to be insufficient to account for the observed density jump across the Earth's inner core boundary and its roles on the geodynamics of the Earth's core should be minor. Abstract:Amorphous sulfur (a-S) is prepared by rapidly compressing molten sulfur to high pressure. From differential scanning calorimeter measurements, a large exothermic peak has been observed around 396 K. Online wide-angled x-ray scattering spectra indicate that no crystallization occurs in the temperature range 295-453 K, suggesting that the exothermal process corresponds to an amorphous-to-amorphous transition. The transition from amorphous sulfur to liquid sulfur is further verified by the direct observation of sulfur melt at the temperature of the associated transition. This is the first time of reporting that a-S transforms to liquid sulfur directly, which has avoided a crystallization process. What is more, the transition is an exothermic and a volume expansion process.

Abstract:We report a novel formulation representation of the molar Gibbs free energy for sulfur dioxide (SO2), which depends only on experimental values of six molecular constants of SO2, whereas the conventional explicit representations contain many adjustable coefficients determined from fitting a great number of experimental spectroscopic data or calorimetric data. The formulation representation of the molar entropy for SO2 is also developed from the Gibbs free energy representation. The predicted reduced molar Gibbs free energy and entropy values yield the average absolute deviations of 0.0750 % and 0.228 % from the data reported in the National Institute of Standards and Technology database at the pressure of 0.1 MPa and in the temperature range from 298 to 6000 K, respectively. The proposed formulation representation of the Gibbs free energy for SO2 can be valuable in practical engineering applications.

Abstract:Thermal properties of solid-state materials are a fundamental topic of study with important practical implications. For example, anisotropic displacement parameters (ADPs) are routinely used in physics, chemistry, and crystallography to quantify the thermal motion of atoms in crystals. ADPs are commonly derived from diffraction experiments, but recent developments have also enabled their first-principles prediction using periodic density functional theory (DFT). Here, we combine experiments and dispersion-corrected DFT to quantify lattice thermal expansion and ADPs in crystalline {\alpha}-sulfur (S8), a prototypical elemental solid that is controlled by the interplay of covalent and van der Waals interactions. We first report on single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements that provide new and improved reference data from 10 K up to room temperature. We then use several popular dispersion-corrected DFT methods to predict vibrational and thermal properties of {\alpha}-sulfur, including the anisotropic lattice thermal expansion. Hereafter, ADPs are derived in the commonly used harmonic approximation (in the computed zero-Kelvin structure) and also in the quasi-harmonic approximation (QHA) which takes the predicted lattice thermal expansion into account. At the PBE+D3(BJ) level, the latter leads to excellent agreement with experiments. Finally, more general implications of this study for realistic materials modeling at finite temperature are discussed.

Individual ion species chemical potentials in the Mean Spherical Approximation

Abstract:The Mean Spherical Approximation (MSA) is a commonly-used thermodynamic theory for computing the energetics of ions in the primitive model (i.e., charged hard-sphere ions in a background dielectric). For the excess chemical potential, however, the early MSA formulations (which were widely adopted) only included the terms needed to compute the mean excess chemical potential (or the mean activity coefficient). Other terms for the chemical potential $\mu_i$ of individual species $i$ were not included because they sum to $0$ in the mean chemical potential. Here, we derive these terms to give a complete MSA formulation of the chemical potential. The result is a simple additive term for $\mu_i$ that we show is a qualitative improvement over the previous MSA version. In addition, our derivation shows that the MSA's assumption of global charge neutrality is not strictly necessary, so that the MSA is also valid for systems close to neutrality.

Abstract:The authors conducted liquid solution studies of antimony with selenium and sulfur in order to provide information on the thermodynamic functions of the formation of these alloys. The studies are based on the vapor pressure values of the components, comprising the double partial systems of antimony with antimony chalcogenides (Sb2Se3 and Sb2S3) and antimony chalcogenides with chalcogens (Se and S). We calculated the thermodynamic functions of mixing (graphical dependencies) and evaporation (tabular data) based on the partial vapor pressure values of components, which are represented by temperature–concentration dependencies. Based on the partial pressure values of melt components, we calculated the boundaries of liquid and vapor coexistence fields at atmospheric pressure (101.3 kPa) and in a vacuum (0.9 kPa). We established the absence of the stratification region on the Sb2S3–S diagram due to the fact that, on state diagrams, the stratification region is indicated at temperatures above 530 °C, while the boiling point of liquid sulfur at an atmospheric pressure corresponds to 429 °C. Based on the position of the field boundaries (L + V) on the state diagrams, the separation of antimony alloys with selenium and sulfur via distillation into elements at atmospheric pressure is difficult due to the high boiling points of antimony-based alloys in a vacuum: Sb2Se3–Se melts require some number of condensate re-evaporation cycles.

Sulfur recombination: A direct approach

Abstract:This work presents a direct three-body recombination approach of the sulfur recombination reaction, S + S + M → S2 + M, at temperatures between 100 and 500 K. Our calculations for M = Ar, based on a classical trajectory approach in hyperspherical coordinates, show excellent agreement with the experimental measurement at T = 298 K of Fair and Thrush [Trans. Faraday Soc. 65, 1208 (1969)]. Similarly, we find that the production of S2 strongly depends on the SAr product, the other possible reaction channel. Finally, using the classical threshold law, we check sulfur recombination with another third body, M = H2S, and find no significant change in the rate.
The High-Temperature Cu-Fe-S System: Thermodynamic Analysis and Prediction of the Liquid–Solid Phase Range

Abstract:Thermodynamic modeling of the Cu-Fe-S liquid solution is carried in the framework of the modified quasichemical model. The manifold nature of Cu-Fe-S liquid solutions from highly metallic via sulfur-rich to pure liquid sulfur is described by one single Gibbs energy expression at 1 bar total pressure. The model predictive ability of an asymmetric versus symmetric approach is thermodynamically analyzed with respect to the extrapolation scheme from the binary subsystems into the ternary system. Without the need of adjustable ternary parameters predictions of sulfur potentials for the liquid phase are in line with experimental data available in the literature. High-temperature pyrrhotite optimized via the compound energy formalism and Cu-Fe-S alloy phases are taken into consideration to predict phase equilibria with the liquid solution. Four isothermal and four isoplethal sections demonstrate promising agreement between a large stock of experimental data and prediction.

Equilibrium thermodynamic properties of binary hard-sphere mixtures from integral equation theory

Abstract:The binary additive hard-sphere mixtures have been studied by the Ornstein-Zernike integral equation coupled with the Martynov-Sarkisov (MS) closure approximation. Virial equation of state is computed in the MS approximation. The excess chemical potential for the mixture is evaluated with a closed-form expression based on correlation functions. The excess Helmholtz free energy is obtained using the Euler relation of thermodynamics. Moreover, these thermodynamic quantities are obtained by the Boublík-Mansoori-Carnahan-Starling-Leland (BMCSL) formulas. Our findings for pressure and excess chemical potential for a number of binary sets of the mixtures from the MS approximation show good agreements with those obtained by the BMCSL formulas and available data in literature, having a maximum deviation of $5\%$ for a packing fraction up to 0.5. The maximum deviation of the excess free energy obtained for the mixtures is shown to be $\sim 16\%$ for a packing fraction of 0.5. To our knowledge, this work presents an initial calculation of an excess chemical potential of the system in the MS approximation.

An Excess Chemical Potential for Hard-Sphere Diatomic Liquid from Integral Equation Approach

Abstract:The reference interaction site model (RISM) theory has been employed in the study of hard homonuclear and heteronuclear diatomic liquids. The RISM equation coupled with the Percus–Yevick and Martynov–Sarkisov closures has been solved numerically. The excess chemical potential has been computed using analytic expression based on correlation functions. An improved prediction of an excess chemical potential has been done with an interpolation scheme, which relates an excess chemical potential for hard-sphere fluid to that of tangent hard-sphere diatomic fluid at the same density. Our findings for an excess chemical potential for hard homonuclear fluid are compared with available accurate data. Maximum deviations of the excess chemical potential from the Percus–Yevick and Martynov–Sarkisov approximations are of and of , respectively. Some values of numerically obtained excess chemical potential for hard heteronuclear diatomic fluid present good comparison with available Monte Carlo data. To our knowledge, this is the first attempt to calculate an excess chemical potential for hard diatomic fluid in the Martynov–Sarkisov approximation. Moreover, radial distribution functions for hard-sphere, tangent hard homonuclear, and heteronuclear diatomic fluids from the Martynov-Sarkisov approximation are in good agreement with those in the literature.

Abstract:The effect of gathering pipeline pressure, temperature, and key components on the solubility of monomeric sulfur in high-sulfur-content natural gas is directly related to the prediction and prevention of sulfur deposition in surface gathering pipelines. Based on our previous study on a prediction model of sulfur solubility in gas with a new formula for the binary interaction coefficient between sulfur and H2S, a new gas–solid thermodynamic phase equilibrium solubility prediction model for monomeric sulfur in high-sulfur-content natural gas was improved based on the gas–solid phase equilibrium principle considering both physical and chemical solution mechanisms. Two new expressions for binary interaction coefficients between sulfur and CO2 and CH4, considering both temperature and solvent density, are proposed in this new solubility prediction model. In this paper, the main factors, such as the gathering pipeline pressure, gathering pipeline temperature, H2S, and CO2, affecting the solubility law of elemental sulfur in high-sulfur-content natural gas are investigated. The results show that the total solubility of elemental sulfur in high-sulfur-bearing natural gas tends to decrease with an increase in the gathering temperature, in which the increase in temperature promotes physical solution, and the physical solution mechanism prevails. Conversely, chemical solution is promoted, and the chemical solution mechanism prevails. With an increase in the gathering pressure, the total solubility of elemental sulfur in high-sulfur-content gas tends to increase, where the physical solubility decreases slightly at first and then increases continuously, with a pressure inflection point of about 2.0 MPa, and the pressure increase has a significant promoting effect on the chemical solubility of elemental sulfur. The increase in the H2S concentration promotes the solution of elemental sulfur in the gas phase in general and significantly promotes the chemical solution of elemental sulfur. The effect on elemental sulfur solubility can be neglected when the molar concentration of CO2 in the gas phase does not exceed 10%.

The experimental VLE data were correlated well with the Wilson, the nonrandom two-liquid (NRTL), and the universal quasichemical activity coefficient (UNIQUAC) models, respectively. From the correlation results, it is revealed that there is no azeotrope presented in the binary system. All of the experimental VLE data passed the thermodynamic consistency tests performed by the Herington and the Van Ness methods.
