Abstract:The classification of thematic mapper imagery in areas with strong topographic variations has proven problematic in the past using a single classifier, due to the changing sun illumination geometry. This often results in the phenomena of identical object with dissimilar spectrum and different objects with similar spectrum. In this paper, an integrated classification method that combines a decision tree with slope data, tasseled cap transformation indices and maximum likelihood classifier is introduced, to find an optimal classification method for thematic mapper imagery of plain and highland terrains. A Landsat 7 ETM+ image acquired over Hangzhou Bay, in eastern China was used to test the method. The results indicate that the performance of the integrated classifier is acceptably good in comparison with that of the existing most widely used maximum likelihood classifier. The integrated classifier depends on hypsography (variation in topography) and the characteristics of ground truth objects (plant and soil). It can greatly reduce the influence of the homogeneous spectrum caused by topographic variation. This integrated classifier might potentially be one of the most accurate classifiers and valuable tool for land cover and land use mapping of plain and highland terrains.

Abstract:The physiographic map can visualize spatial relations between different landforms, thus providing insights into geologic processes that shaped the present-day Martian landscape. The physiographic map of Mars surface is usually made through image interpretation, which is always labor-intensive and highly depends on the expert knowledge. In this paper, we propose an efficient and automatic classification method for characterization of landforms on Mars by using the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) digital elevation data. The proposed method was tested on a region where China's Mars probe Tianwen-1 landed. The study area covers the Nepenthes Mensae, Amenthes Planum, northern Terra Cimmeria, northern Hesperia Planum and southern Utopia Planitia region, having a size of 2250km×2750km centered at 117°E, 6°N. The obtained results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method in describing different topographic characteristics of the Martian landforms. Note that the proposed method is completely data-driven, which can provide a rapid mapping result in large geographical regions, especially from a global perspective to reveal the Martian landform information.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the basic principles of automated landforms classification based on DTA technology for Martian landforms classification.Based on the discussion and analysis,it elaborates two important issues during the study.One is the way describing the qualities of landforms using some properties;The other one is to selecting topographic attributes and building a feature space for further research.In this paper,it describes the qualities of Martian landforms based on some statistical data generated from profiles of the study area,and it brings about three topographic attributes for feature space generation.Finally,some research results are presented as a demonstration of such approaches.

Abstract:Abstract The lunar surface contains a wide variety of topographic shapes and features, each with different distributions and scales, and any analysis technique to objectively measure roughness must respect these qualities. Coarse‐graining is a naturally scale‐dependent filtering technique that preserves scale‐dependent symmetries and produces coarse elevation maps that gradually erase the smaller features from the original topography. In this study of the lunar surface, we present two surface variability metrics obtained from coarse‐graining lunar topography: fine elevation and coarse curvature. Both metrics are isotropic, deterministic, slope‐independent, and coordinate‐agnostic. Fine (detrended) elevation is acquired by subtracting the coarse elevation from the original topography and contains features that are smaller than the coarse‐graining length‐scale. Coarse curvature is the Laplacian of coarsened topography, and naturally quantifies the curvature at any scale and indicates whether a location is elevated or depressed relative to its neighborhood at that scale. We find that highlands and maria have distinct roughness characteristics at all length‐scales. Our topographic spectra reveal four scale‐breaks that mark characteristic shifts in surface roughness: 100, 300, 1,000, and 4,000 km. Comparing fine elevation distributions between maria and highlands, we show that maria fine elevation is biased toward smaller‐magnitude elevations and that the maria–highland discrepancies are more pronounced at larger length‐scales. We also provide local examples of selected regions to demonstrate that these metrics can successfully distinguish geological features of different length‐scales.

Automatic Extraction of 3-D Information of Lunar Surface Rocks Using Topography Data

Abstract:The shape, size, and abundance of rocks on the Moon’s surface are essential for understanding impact cratering and weathering processes, interpreting remote sensing observations, and ensuring landing safety and rover trafficability. In most previous studies, rock information was extracted from optical images using visual identification or automatic detection methods. However, optical images cannot provide 3-D information on rocks and cannot be used in lunar permanently shadowed regions (PSRs), where rock information is critical to deciphering anomalously high radar echoes in water ice deposit detection. In this study, we proposed an automatic method for extracting 3-D information about rocks from topography data based on the geometry and clustering tendency of lunar surface rocks. A geometric shape model for lunar surface rocks is first developed by analyzing 3196 rocks in elevation data. In the proposed approach, rocks are detected from topography data using multiscale 2-D continuous wavelet transform (2-D CWT) and Hopkins statistic, and then a 3-D shape parameter extraction method is introduced to obtain the shape information directly from the detected irregular rock boundary by a region growing-based algorithm. To demonstrate the accuracy of the method, we applied the proposed method to both the simulated and real-topography data with various spatial resolutions and vertical uncertainties. The results show that, compared with the ground truth and manual detection results, the detection rate of rocks >4 pixels in size varies from 50% to 90%, depending mainly on the vertical uncertainty of elevation data. In addition, for the first time, we provide 3-D information on surface rocks (>10 m) in lunar PSRs from topography data. Our analyses suggest that, for future missions to the lunar PSRs (e.g., China’s Chang’E-7), the vertical uncertainty of elevation data needs to be better than 0.2 m in order to accurately gather 3-D information of rocks larger than 2 m. Our method can be utilized for extracting 3-D information on rocks from topography data, selecting landing sites, and guiding instrument design for future altimeters.
Fractal Structure of Lunar Topography: an Interpretation of Topographic Characteristics

Abstract:Over the years, fractal geometry has been applied extensively in many fields of geoscience. Based on the global gridded data generated from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, we carry out our fractal measure to interpret lunar fractures by using qualitative (similar ratio) and quantitative (fractal dimension) approaches of fractal geometry. We find that most of the lunar surface exhibits fractal behavior over the given scales ranging from 1 to 256m. Lunar maria have higher fractal dimensions than other geological units, while those of volcanic areas and highlands are lower than their surroundings. Simple and flat surfaces have low values of similar ratios and these areas indicate low surface roughness and young ages. Older-aged areas, such as the Hertzsprung basin, have low fractal dimensions and high similar ratios by their complicated topography.

Abstract:The distribution of elevations on the moon determined by Clementine deviates strongly from a normal distribution, suggesting that several geologic processes have influenced the topography. The hypsograms for the near side and far side of the moon are distinctly different, and these differences correlate with differences in composition as determined by Apollo orbital geochemistry, Clementine global multispectral imaging, and ground-based spectroscopy. The hypsograms and compositional data indicate the presence of at least five compositional-altimetric units. The lack of fill of the South Pole-Aitken Basin by mare basalts suggests poor production efficiency of mare basalt in the mantle of this area of the moon.

Abstract:Taking the Chang'e-4 and Chang'e-5 landing areas as the study areas, this study extracts the geological unit information from the regional USGS geological map, as well as the feature information such as topography and geomorphology, material composition and mineral abundance from Chang'e-2 DOM and DEM, wide angle camera (WAC) and Kaguya multi-band imager data. By applying methods including the statistical-based estimation of mutual information of data and the integrated-algorithmic-model-based evaluation of feature importance to this extracted information, we screen the significant features and construct a high-precision classification model by combining machine learning algorithm with important features of sample data. The practical application of the multi-classification prediction on the complex geological units in the two study areas achieves 97.9% and 95.1% accuracy. At the same time, the significant characteristics of the study area are mined, and the rules and knowledge associated with the geological evolution of the study area are obtained. In this study, we carry out research on quantitative prediction and identification of lunar surface geological units based on large samples and construct a high-precision multi-classification model to achieve automatic classification and prediction on large sample geological units with high accuracy. This method provides a new idea for the predicted mapping of geological units of lunar global digital mapping. In addition, it helps to fully exploit the useful information in the data and enrich the knowledge regarding the formation and evolution of the Moon.

Abstract:Landform classification, which is a key topic of geography, is of great significance to a wide range of fields including human construction, geological structure research, environmental governance, etc. Previous studies of landform classification generally paid attention to the topographic or texture information, whilst the watershed spatial structure has not been used. This study developed a new landform classification method based on watershed geospatial structure. Via abstracting the landform into the internal and marginal structure, we adopted the gully weighted complex network (GWCN) and watershed boundary profile (WBP) to simulate the watershed geospatial structure. Introducing various indices to quantitatively depict the watershed geospatial structure, we conducted the landform classification on the Northern Shaanxi of Loess Plateau with a watershed-based strategy and established the classification map. The classified landform distribution has significant spatial aggregation and clear regional boundaries. Classification accuracy reached 89% and the kappa coefficient reached 0.87%. Besides, the proposed method has a positive response to some similar and complex landforms. In general, the present study first utilized the watershed geospatial structure to conduct landform classification and is an efficient landform classification method with well accuracy and universality, offering additional insights for landform classification and mapping.

Abstract:The topographic mapping of sampling areas, providing basic sampling environment information, is crucial in sample return mission. The fixed monitoring cameras were designed for mapping of sampling areas in fixed effective resolution. In order to perform more detailed topographic analysis of sampling areas, this paper proposed a topographic mapping method based on the sequential sample images captured with the movements of manipulator arm. The tie point matching results and the image exterior orientation parameters obtained from measurements of manipulator arm joints were employed to the weighted bundle adjustment based optimization for the accurate topographic mapping. The simulated images were adopted to validate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method.

Abstract:Cone penetration test (CPT) is an appropriate technique for quickly determining the geotechnical properties of lunar soil, which is valuable for in situ lunar exploration. Utilizing a typical coupling method recently developed by the authors, a finite element method (FEM)-discrete element method (DEM) coupled model of CPTs is obtained. A series of CPTs in lunar soil are simulated to qualitatively reveal the flow of particles and the development of resistance throughout the penetration process. In addition, the effects of major factors, such as penetration velocity, penetration depth, cone tip angle, and the low gravity on the Moon surface are investigated.

Abstract:Karst landforms are one of the typical geographical units with a specific physical process on the earth's surface. In this study, we proposed a method considering surface flow for karst landform classification. The proposed approach is validated and applied in two sample karst areas, Fenglin and Fengcong, located in Guilin, China. The results demonstrated that the karst landform units of Fenglin and Fengcong can be effectively classified. The proposed method can be extended to other landform types with complex landforms. Karst landforms are one of the most typical geographical units with a specific physical process on the earth's surface. The classification of karst landforms is an important aspect for understanding their landform processes and mechanisms. However, influenced by various interior and external forces, karst landforms have an extremely complex surface morphology, increasing the difficulty of their automatic classification. In this study, we considered hydrological features as an important factor in characterizing karst landforms and proposed a method that considers surface flow for karst landform classification. In this method, terrain was reversed for hydrological analysis to achieve the landform units. Then, the watershed boundary of the reversed terrain is extracted by hydrological analysis. The boundary of the karst landform unit is determined by erasing the plain area from the watershed boundary. Thereafter, the graph theory segmentation method is employed to merge the landform units belonging to the same karst landform entity. The proposed approach is validated and applied in two sample karst areas, Fenglin and Fengcong, located in Guilin, China, using digital elevation model data with 30 m spatial resolution. In addition, a comparative analysis is conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed method. The results demonstrated that the typical karst landform units of Fenglin and Fengcong can be effectively classified. The overall classification accuracy is 94.44%. The proposed method produced more reasonable and accurate boundaries compared with the contour tree and terrain feature point methods. Furthermore, the classification results indicate various landform development stages of the karst landform process in the study area. The proposed method considering surface flow characteristics can be further extended to other landform types with highly complex landforms.

Abstract:Many laboratory tests of lunar soil simulant were conducted to analyze the vertical impact during landing process.The method to determine the material parameters was discussed,and the range of material constants was suggested.The space lander was simplified to be an impact column according to the similarity scale between earth and moon.The three-dimensional dynamic finite element model was established to simulate the process of impact against lunar soil.Comparing with the model test results,the model can rationally simulate the dynamic response of the model column's axial force,acceleration and penetration depth during the period of interaction.The plastic area displays ellipsoid of variational shape,the influence mainly distributes within the depth of 2.0~3.0 times of diameter and the deformation likes a basin.The response of velocity lags axial force and the displacement lags the velocity.
Classification and Expression of Urban Topographic Features for DEM Construction

Abstract:Topographic features are defined as point, polyline and polygon elements which control surface topography of the earth. Its reasonable classification can provide the data foundation for the simulation of urban topography. There are already many industrial standards for topographic map classification. However, the existed feature classification and coding methods are mainly focused on surveying, mapping, editing, updating, and data storage of topographic map. These methods cannot be used for urban DEM construction directly. After parsing the characteristics of urban terrain and analyzing the deficiencies of classification method in urban terrain modeling based on large scale topographic map, a classification and expression method of urban topographic features is put forward in this paper. According to the principle of urban space is divided by road and land parcel, the topographic features of urban terrain are classified and expressed with mathematical equations based on object-oriented thought by taking the 1:500 topographic maps as fundamental data. To test and verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the classification and expression method, this paper made a registration between classification results and remote sensing images, constructed the DEM and extracted the slope. Meanwhile, this paper performed a comprehensive evaluation for classification results from geometric and semantic perspectives. Also, it analyzed modeling effects at global and local scale, respectively. The experiment results showed that the classification results can be well matched with remote sensing images, the proposed classification and expression method of topographic features can express the geometric and semantic information of complex urban terrain effectively at both global and local scale. The classification and expression method of topographic features for urban DEM construction can not only provide basis for analysis and application of terrain factors, but also provide technical support for the application of topographic features, such as urban terrain modeling, construction planning and decision-making.

Abstract:Compared to gravity method, the gravity gradient has multi-component advantages and can emphasize short wavelength features. By providing more detailed features in the image display, it could present a more accurate determination of the spatial distribution of the underling anomaly body. In our study, based on the gravity gradient data that was synthesized from the high-precision gravity model from Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory mission, we analyzed the tectonic structure of the Moon's shallow layers in Oceanus Procellarum region. Bouguer anomalies of gravity gradient are used for geological boundary recognition and three-dimensional density inversion. Theta Map method is adopted for the edge identification of geological structures. It fully utilizes the characteristics of multi-components combination of gravity gradient to sharpen the boundaries identification of abnormal bodies. During the density inversion, in order to decrease the non-unique solution problem, the depth weight constraint is added to the inversion equation. Furthermore, the method of wavelet coefficient compression and Least Squares QR-decomposition is applied to accelerate the inverse calculation of large ill-conditioned equations. According to the result illustration, we found that: 1) The combination of gravity tensors has a strong boundary recognition ability in the horizontal direction. There is close consistency with the results of density inversion. 2) Our study supports the expansion and intrusion hypothesis of lunar magma in the research zone of Oceanus Procellarum, since the distribution of density tomography results at different depths is higher than the normal assumed crust density of the Moon in the majority of areas. Moreover, the intrusion source in our research area is concentrated at a direction depth of 30–45 km below the mean lunar radius surface approximately.

Abstract:Trend Surface is commonly referred to as a mathematical method of analyzing data in map form. More than 8.2 million effective data samples were obtained by the Chang'E-1 Laser Altimeter (LAM). This paper presents a novel method for Lunar Trend Surface Analysis (TSA) base on a class of orthogonal spline functions, named as GF system. The method proposed could not only greatly reduce the computational complexity, but also obtain a series of the surface models at different resolution levels. Experiments show encouraging results. © 2011 Binary Information Press.

Abstract:In this study, a modern principal component analysis (PCA) of the chemical properties of lunar soils was conducted. American and Soviet results acquired during the Apollo and Luna missions, respectively, were analyzed and compared. The chemical composition of the lunar soil was the focus of our analysis, the main aim of which was to assess any possible differences between the results provided by the missions in question. The results were visualized in two- and three-dimensional spaces. The use of PCA virtual variables enabled the chemical composition of the lunar soil to be fully visualized—something impossible to achieve using traditional techniques—and key similarities and differences among the properties of the lunar soil samples were determined. The sources of any differences were then conceptualized. The work reported in this paper offers new directions for future studies, especially research into the design of new lunar soil simulants for lunar construction and civil engineering programs.

Abstract:Surface roughness is a useful tool to reflect numerous geological characteristics. Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) Gridded Data Records (GDRs) are used as the datum. In this paper, Lunar surface roughness maps are built based on morphological methods in image processing. As roughness measure, elevations of GDRs are considered as pixels of an image. Structuring element (SE) is employed as a scale-dependent measure of roughness maps. Global roughness maps with different resolutions are built to interpret the stability of our roughness measure. Global roughness with different-size SEs is mapped based on GDRs with the resolution of 64 pixels per degree to discuss the roughness variations in local regions determined by SEs. Regional roughness maps provide significant melt-related overviews of typical topography.
Investigations on Methods of Land Cover Classification of TM Image in Mountain Area

Abstract:The main purpose of this study was to develop a methodology for classification of Landsat imagery for mountain area cover type mapping. Single-stage classification and multi-stage iterative classification were evaluated to determine which classification of satellite imagery could be employed to obtain accurate land cover information in Mentougou district located in western Beijing with diverse topography. TM data used in the study consists of one quarter-scene acquired on 19 June, 2001. The use of ancillary information in the process of deriving thematic maps from satellite imagery was analyzed. Field surveyed data were not only used for the production of the vegetation map of Mentougou but for the ground information of the land covers in the study area Other ancillary data layers such as topography was used in the analysis. Five classification methods were used for classifying the TM data in the study: 1) single-stage classification, 2) single-stage classification with DEM analysis, 3) single-stage classification with PCA analysis, 4) iterative classification with band selection, and unsupervised classification. The accuracy of each classification is expressed as an error matrix from which the Kappa statistic and its large sample variance are derived. The results indicate that the iterative multi-stage classification approach was significantly better than the single-stage classification approach. And this organizational methodology for classification is feasible and reliable in mountain areas image classification.
