Abstract:One of the main motivations for low energy supersymmetric theories is their ability to address the hierarchy and naturalness problems in the Higgs sector of the Standard Model. In these theories, at least two doublets of scalar fields are required to break the electroweak symmetry and to generate the masses of the elementary particles, resulting in a rather rich Higgs spectrum. The search for the Higgs bosons of Supersymmetry and the determination of their basic properties is one of the major goals of high--energy colliders and, in particular, the LHC which will soon start operation. We review the salient features of the Higgs sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and of some of its extensions and summarize the prospects for probing them at the LHC and at the future ILC.

Abstract:Several topics related to phenomenology of the Higgs sector in the supersymmetric standard model are reviewed. The upper bound of the lightest Higgs mass in the minimal supersymmetric standard model as well as extended version of it is discussed and it is shown that an $e^+ e^-$ linear collider with $\sqrt{s}\sim300 - 500$ GeV can find at least one Higgs boson in these models. It is also pointed out that the heavy Higgs mass scale may be determined from measurements of the Higgs boson decay branching ratios even if we only discover the lightest Higgs boson at early stage of the linear collider experiment.

Abstract: Higgs boson may serve as a portal to new physics beyond the standard model (BSM) which is implied by theoretical naturalness or experimental anomalies. In this note we briefly survey some Higgs-related BSM physics models, including the low energy SUSY (focusing on the minimal SUSY model), the little Higgs models, the two-Higgs-doublet models and the simplest singlet extensions of the Higgs sector. For each illustrated BSM model, we emphatically elucidate its phenomenological power in explaining current measurements of the muon g-2, the W-boson mass and the dark matter. For the singlet extensions like the xSM and 2HDM+S, we discuss the induced cosmic phase transition and the dark matter relic density as well as the vacuum stability. Finally, we give an outlook.

Abstract:This Thesis is devoted to the study of the phenomenology of the Higgs sector of the minimal $B-L$ extension of the Standard Model at present and future colliders. Firstly, the motivations that call for the minimal $B-L$ extension are summarised. In addition, the model is analysed in its salient parts. Moreover, a detailed review of the phenomenological allowed Higgs sector parameter space is given. Finally, a complete survey of the distinctive Higgs boson signatures of the model at both the Large Hadron Collider and the future linear colliders is presented.

Abstract:The Higgs boson, which was discovered at CERN in 2012, stands out as a remarkable elementary particle with distinct characteristics. Unlike any other observed particle, it possesses zero spin within the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. Theoretical predictions had anticipated the existence of this scalar boson, postulating its interaction with the $W$ and $Z$ bosons as well as through Yukawa interactions with fermions. Furthermore the Higgs boson can interact with itself, commonly referred to as the Higgs self-interaction. In this review, the current state of experimental and theoretical investigations of Higgs boson production at the LHC and the ongoing efforts to unravel its properties are described, and an up-to-date assessment of our understanding of the Higgs sector of the SM is provided. In addition, potential links between the Higgs boson and significant unresolved questions within the realm of particle physics are presented.

Abstract:Abstract Approximately 13% of people living with HIV in the UK are unaware of their infection. New diagnoses among people ≥50 years is increasing. Unique factors may be associated with testing in this group. This systematic review aims to identify patient and clinician-related barriers/facilitators to HIV testing in people aged ≥50 years. A systematic electronic search was conducted. Papers were assessed for eligibility and data from eligible studies were extracted. Barriers/facilitators were grouped, and the number of times they were reported was noted. Because of considerable heterogeneity, a narrative approach has been undertaken to synthesise data. In total, 17 studies were included. Main barriers to testing were low perceived risk and clinicians’ preconceptions about older people. Main facilitators were regular use of healthcare services or being offered/encouraged to test by a healthcare provider. Although being encouraged to test was a common facilitator, clinicians’ preconceptions about older people was the biggest barrier. This shows a divide between clinicians’ preconceptions and patients’ expectations, which may impact on testing rates. This review is an important first step in identifying potential barriers/facilitators for further study or to be addressed in the design of future interventions.

Abstract:A simple electronic circuit is described using four common and very inexpensive analog multiplexer/demultiplexer chips. These analog switches are used to select eight different wiring configurations to a van der Pauw sample. Several interfacing schemes to a PC are suggested. The van der Pauw resistivity and Hall voltage expressions are also summarized.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE--To determine the numbers of actual and expected psychiatric admissions for the residents of the district health authorities of England and to develop a model to indicate which social, health status, and service provision factors best explain the variation of the actual from the expected psychiatric admissions; to use this model to predict psychiatric admission for district health authorities as an aid to resource allocation. DESIGN--The actual psychiatric admission for district health authority residents were extracted from data of the 1986 Mental Health Enquiry. Expected admissions were calculated using the age, sex, and marital status structure of each district health authority and the national psychiatric admission rates related to age, sex, and marital status. Standardised psychiatric admission ratios were calculated as the ratios of the numbers of actual to expected psychiatric admissions. A wide range of social, health status, and service provision data were used as the explanatory variables in regression analyses to determine which combination of factors best explained the variation between districts of standardised psychiatric admission ratios. SETTING--The 168,652 psychiatric admissions recorded for the 1986 Mental Health Enquiry, after exclusion of mental handicap and psychogeriatric admissions. RESULTS--The actual number of psychiatric admissions varied from 79% above to 54% below the expected number of admissions from age, sex, and marital status for the districts of England. The most powerful variables to explain this variation were the rate of notification of drug misusers, standardised mortality ratios, and levels of illegitimacy in each district. A complex model was developed which could be used to predict district psychiatric admissions as an aid to resource allocation. A simpler model was also developed (which was less powerful than the more complex model) based on the underprivileged area score. One advantage of this model was that it could be used at the level of electoral wards as well as district health authorities.

Abstract:These lecture notes review the theoretical background to the Higgs boson, provide an introduction to its phenomenology, and describe the experimental tests that lead us to think that "beyond any reasonable doubt, it is a Higgs boson". Motivations for expecting new physics beyond the Standard Model are recalled, and the Standard Model effective field theory is advocated as a tool to help search for it. The phenomenology of $N = 1$ and $N = 2$ supersymmetric Higgs bosons is reviewed, and the prospects for possible future Higgs factories are previewed.

Abstract:This article reviews the Little Higgs models of electroweak symmetry breaking and their phenomenology. Little Higgs models incorporate a light composite Higgs boson and remain perturbative until a scale of order 10 TeV, as required by precision electroweak data. The collective symmetry breaking mechanism, which forms the basis of Little Higgs models, is introduced. An explicit, fully realistic implementation of this mechanism, the Littlest Higgs model, is then discussed in some detail. Several other implementations, including simple group models and models with T parity, are also reviewed. Precision electroweak constraints on a variety of Little Higgs models are summarized. If a Little Higgs model is realized in nature, the predicted new particles should be observable at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The expected signatures, as well as the experimental sensitivities and the possible strategies for confirming the Little Higgs origin of new particles, are discussed. Finally, several other related topics are briefly reviewed, including the ultraviolet completions of Little Higgs models, as well as the implications of these models for flavor physics and cosmology.

Abstract:Eleven years ago, the Higgs boson was discovered at the LHC. I briefly survey the status of Higgs boson physics today and explore some of the implications for future Higgs studies. Although current experimental measurements are consistent with interpreting the observed Higgs boson as being consistent with the predictions of the Standard Model of particle physics, it is still possible that the Higgs boson is a member of an extended scalar sector that lies beyond the Standard Model. Nevertheless, an extended Higgs sector is already highly constrained. The Higgs sector can also serve as a portal to new physics beyond the Standard Model. Finally, two Higgs wishlists are assembled that merit future study and clarification at the LHC and future collider facilities now under development.

Abstract:The Higgs boson plays a central role in the Standard Model, as well as in theories which go beyond it. This article is therefore divided into two parts. The first takes s historical approach and shows how the mass problem entered weak interaction theory from the beginning and how it was solved by invoking the Higgs boson. This is followed by a construction of the Glashow-Salam-Weinberg model, again stressing the role played by the Higgs doublet. This part culminates in the Higgs boson discovery of 2012. The second part first discusses the shortcomings of the Standard Model and then touches upon the major theories which try to improve upon it, mostly with profound consequences on the Higgs sector. This is followed up by short descriptions of a number of popular extensions of the Higgs sector, and culminates in a brief introduction to effective field theory approaches to studying the Higgs sector.

Abstract:The properties of 125 GeV new particle,which was discovered in 2012 at the Large Hadron Collider(LHC),are found to be consistent with those of the Higgs boson in the standard model(SM).Hereafter the new particle is dubbed as SM-like Higgs boson.However there is still spacious room for physics beyond the SM(BSM)due to the limited energy and luminosity of the LHC.With more data,experiments will scrutinize whether the new particle is indeed the SM one or not.At the same time,one believes that discovery of the SMlike Higgs boson is just the start of the new era of particle physics.The predominant topic is whether there are other new Higgs bosons as speculated in various BSM models.In this short review,we will describe the current status of Higgs physics at the LHC and several BSM models which contain more Higgs sectors.In literatures,there are numerous studies on extended Higgs sector and a comprehensive review is beyond the scope of this review.Instead,we will present two latest studies on Higgs physics:(1)how to detect the charged Higgs boson and measure tan b after including the top polarization information,and(2)how to discover the extra neutral Higgs boson via the pair production of SM-like Higgs boson.

Abstract:We give a brief review of the current constraints and prospects for detection of higgsino dark matter in low-scale supersymmetry. In the first part we argue, after performing a survey of all potential dark matter particles in the MSSM, that the (nearly) pure higgsino is the only candidate emerging virtually unscathed from the wealth of observational data of recent years. In doing so by virtue of its gauge quantum numbers and electroweak symmetry breaking only, it maintains at the same time a relatively high degree of model-independence. In the second part we properly review the prospects for detection of a higgsino-like neutralino in direct underground dark matter searches, collider searches, and indirect astrophysical signals. We provide estimates for the typical scale of the superpartners and fine tuning in the context of traditional scenarios where the breaking of supersymmetry is mediated at about the scale of Grand Unification and where strong expectations for a timely detection of higgsinos in underground detectors are closely related to the measured 125 GeV mass of the Higgs boson at the LHC.

Abstract:Future perspectives for Higgs physics are outlined. First it is shown that the discovered Higgs boson cannot be the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson, motivating the investigations of Higgs sectors beyond the SM (BSM). The secure future, the HL-LHC, and the agreed upon future, an $e^+e^-$ collider, are briefly discussed. The importance of theory calculations for the full exploitation of the (anticipated) experimental data is emphasized. Finally, the complementarity of collider based Higgs physics and other types of experiments, such as gravitational wave observatories is briefly outlined.

Abstract:The latest results of Higgs boson searches beyond the Standard Model from the ATLAS and CMS experiments are reviewed. This includes searches for additional neutral, charged, and double charged Higgs-like bosons, searches for dark matter produced in association with a Higgs boson, and searches for new physics in Higgs boson production and decay processes. Interpretations are given within the hMSSM, a special parameterization of the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, in which the mass of the lightest Higgs boson is set to the value of 125 GeV measured at the LHC.

Abstract:We show that, in the minimal supersymmetric standard model, the possibility for the lightest CP-even Higgs boson to be lighter than Z boson (as low as about 60 GeV) is, contrary to the usual belief, not yet excluded by the CERN LEP2 Higgs search nor any direct searches for supersymmetric particles at high energy colliders. The characteristic of the light Higgs boson scenario (LHS) is that the ZZh coupling and the decay branching ratio Br(h/A -> b (b) over bar) are simultaneously suppressed as a result of generic supersymmetric loop corrections. Consequently, the W(+/-)H(-/+)h coupling has to be large due to the sum rule of Higgs couplings to weak gauge bosons. We discuss the potential of the Fermilab Tevatron and B factories to test the LHS, and show that the associated neutral and charged Higgs boson production process, pp -> H(+/-)h(A), can completely probe the LHS at the CERN Large Hadron Collider.
