Abstract:We present VLBI observations of the EGRET quasars 0202+149, CTA 26, and 1606+106, as well as additional analysis of VLBI observations of 1156+295 presented in Piner & Kingham (1997b). We have produced 8 and 2 GHz VLBI images at 11 epochs, 8 epochs, and 12 epochs, spanning the years 1989 to 1996, of 0202+149, CTA 26, and 1606+106 respectively. The VLBI data have been taken from the Washington VLBI correlator's geodetic database. We have measured the apparent velocities of the jet components and find that CTA 26 and 1606+106 are superluminal sources, with average apparent speeds of 8.9 and 2.9 h^{-1}c respectively (H_{0}=100h km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}, q_{0}=0.5). The components in 0202+149 are stationary, and we identify this source as a compact F double. These sources all have apparently bent jets, and we detected non-radial motion of components in CTA 26 and 1156+295. We have not yet detected any components emerging subsequent to the gamma-ray flares in CTA 26, 1156+295, and 1606+106, and we derive lower limits on the ejection times of any such components. The misalignment angle distribution of the EGRET sources is compared to the distribution for blazars as a whole, and we find that EGRET sources belong preferentially to neither the aligned nor the misaligned population. We also compare the average values for the apparent velocities and Doppler beaming factors for the EGRET and non-EGRET blazars, and find no significant differences. We thus find no indication, within the measurement errors, that EGRET blazars are any more strongly beamed than their counterparts which have not been detected in gamma-rays.

Abstract:The EGRET instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (1991-2000) has positively detected high energy gamma-ray emission from more than 67 active galaxies of the blazar class. The majority of the EGRET blazars are flat-spectrum radio quasars, which are characterized by inferred isotropic luminosities often as high as 3E49 ergs/s. The remainder are BL Lac objects, some of which have been detected at TeV energies (> 250 GeV) by ground-based atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. One of the remarkable characteristics observed in blazars is that the gamma-ray luminosity often dominates the bolometric power in these sources. The detection of blazars by EGRET has undoubtedly been one of the highlights of the mission, and has forever impacted upon our understanding of the emission mechanisms in these objects. In this article, we summarize the properties of EGRET blazars, and review the constraints that the EGRET observations place on the various models of gamma-ray production in these sources.

Abstract:The identification of celestial gamma-ray sources with astronomical objects or object classes has remained the initial and most fundamental key for understanding their physical nature. The observational characteristic of a gamma-ray emitter and the conditions under which an astronomical object is able to produce energetic gamma-ray emission defines the range of candidates available for source identifications. The main obstacle must be seen in the fact that a gamma-ray source location is often imprecise, a flux history could only be established on the basis of weeks, and uncertainties in the gamma-ray observables are considerably large. Therefore coordinated multifrequency follow-up campaigns or spatial-statistical methods are required to assign proper counterpart identifications. Although Active Galactic Nuclei and pulsars are uniquely identified EGRET sources, many other gamma-ray sources still remain unidentified. I will review properties of the population and highlight the characteristics of potential counterparts of the still unidentified gamma-ray sources detected by EGRET.

Demystifying an unidentified EGRET source by VHE gamma-ray observations

Abstract:In a novel approach in observational high-energy gamma-ray astronomy, observations carried out by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes provide necessary templates to pinpoint the nature of intriguing, yet unidentified EGRET gamma-ray sources. Using GeV-photons detected by CGRO EGRET and taking advantage of high spatial resolution images from H.E.S.S. observations, we were able to shed new light on the EGRET observed gamma-ray emission in the Kookaburra complex, whose previous coverage in the literature is somewhat contradictory. 3EGJ1420-6038 very likely accounts for two GeV gamma-ray sources (E>1 GeV), both in positional coincidence with the recently reported pulsar wind nebulae (PWN) by HESS in the Kookaburra/Rabbit complex. PWN associations at VHE energies, supported by accumulating evidence from observations in the radio and X-ray band, are indicative for the PSR/plerionic origin of spatially coincident, but still unidentified Galactic gamma-ray sources from EGRET. This not only supports the already suggested connection between variable, but unidentified low-latitude gamma-ray sources with pulsar wind nebulae (3EGJ1420-6038 has been suggested as PWN candidate previoulsy), it also documents the ability of resolving apparently confused EGRET sources by connecting the GeV emission as measured from a large-aperture space-based gamma-ray instrument with narrow field-of-view but superior spatial resolution observations by ground-based atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, a very promising identification technique for achieving convincing individual source identifications in the era of GLAST-LAT.

Abstract:Although the majority of gamma-ray sources still remain unidentified, we have various kinds of information to characterize the observational properties of unidentified EGRET sources. Despite astronomical properties like locations of individual sources or the collective arrangement of the class as such, the nine years of CGRO observations provide the ability to investigate flux variability at different timescales, enable us to perform periodicity searches, determine gamma-ray source spectra between 30 MeV and 10 GeV and even investigate spectral variability. The basic observational properties of unidentified high-energy gamma-ray sources discovered by EGRET are reviewed. Various instrumental and observational peculiarities affecting the interpretation of the EGRET data are pointed out, also describing the way such biases might affect scientific conclusions drawn from the EGRET data.

Abstract:We study numerically the inhomogeneous pre-big-bang inflation in a spherically symmetric space-time. We find that a large initial inhomogeneity suppresses the onset of the pre-big-bang inflation. We also find that even if the pre-big-bang inflationary stage is realized, the initial inhomogeneities are not homogenized. Namely, during the pre-big-bang inflation ``hairs''(irregularities) do not fall, in sharp contrast to the usual (potential energy dominated) inflation where initial inhomogeneity and anisotropy are damped and thus the resulting universe is less sensitive to initial conditions.

3EG J2027+3429 another Blazar behind the Galactic Plane

Abstract:We report on the association of an X-ray source (WGA J2025.1+3342), serendipitously found with BeppoSAX in two separate observations, with the unidentified EGRET source 3EG J2027+3429. The source is detected from 1 keV up to about 100 keV, has a flat (0.6-1.5) spectrum and is highly variable both in intensity and shape. The data indicate marginal evidence for an iron line in the source rest frame. The overall X-ray luminosity is 4 10^{45} erg s^{-1} typical of a quasar. The X-ray source is coincident in radio with a bright object characterized by a flat spectrum over the band 0.3-10 GHz while in optical it is identified with a quasar at redshift 0.22. All available data indicate a SED compatible with a low frequency peaked or red blazar type object. This identification is interesting because this is the second blazar found behind the galactic plane in the direction of the Cygnus region.

Abstract:Raster and halftone images are typically generated using small image elements, dots, which are organized and generated into a periodic structure to reproduce desired imaging effect. In this study, a periodic image element structure, referred to as a regular dot pattern, is defined, and based on the definition, two methods are introduced to detect irregularities in regular dot patterns. An example application for the methods is an automatic assessment of Heliotest sample prints. Heliotest assessment is used in the paper and printing industry to measure printability of different paper grades. In the experimental part the proposed methods are applied to detect missing elements, dots, from digitized Heliotest samples which are considered to form a regular dot pattern.

Abstract:The 3rd EGRET catalogue lists 271 sources and provides an identification for 101 of them. Thus, the unidentified sources are the majority in the gamma-ray sky, as we currently know it. Solving the mystery of the unidentified gamma-ray sources is a major challenge for all fields of astronomy. Here we shall review the different approaches towards source identification as well as the results achieved so far.

Abstract:A large fraction of the anticipated source detections by the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST-LAT) will initially be unidentified. We argue that traditional approaches to identify individuals and/or populations of gamma ray sources will encounter procedural limitations. Those limitations are discussed on the background of source identifications from EGRET observations. Generally, our ability to classify (faint) source populations in the anticipated GLAST dataset with the required degree of statistical confidence will be hampered by sheer source wealth. A new paradigm for achieving the classification of gamma ray source populations is discussed.

Abstract:The EGRET telescope on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory detected over 200 sources and the majority of these are still unidentified. At least three subpopulations of EGRET sources have been associated with the Galaxy: bright sources lying along the Galactic plane, weaker sources spatially correlated with the Gould Belt and a high-latitude, halo population. Many of these sources may be pulsars and there are more than two-dozen radio pulsars in or near EGRET source error boxes, most of them recently discovered in the Parkes Multibeam Survey. We present results from several population synthesis studies of pulsars in the Galaxy, which predict the number of pulsars detected by gamma-ray and radio surveys assuming models for the high-energy emission beam and its relation to the radio beam. Future gamma-ray pulsar detections by AGILE and GLAST together with the recent large rise in the radio pulsar population will give greatly improved statistics. The relative numbers of radio and gamma-ray pulsars detected in the plane and in the Gould Belt populations will provide an important discriminator between models of high-energy emission and will profoundly affect the numbers and birth rate of pulsars in the Galaxy.

The Highest Energy Emission Detected by EGRET from Blazars

Abstract:Published EGRET spectra from blazars extend only to 10 GeV, yet EGRET has detected approximately 2000 gamma-rays above 10 GeV of which about half are at high Galactic latitude. We report a search of these high-energy gamma-rays for associations with the EGRET and TeV detected blazars. Because the point spread function of EGRET improves with energy, only ~2 gamma-rays are expected to be positionally coincident with the 80 blazars searched, yet 23 gamma-rays were observed. This collection of > 10 GeV sources should be of particular interest due to the improved sensitivity and lower energy thresholds of ground-based TeV observatories. One of the blazars, RGB0509+056, has the highest energy gamma-rays detected by EGRET from any blazar with 2 > 40 GeV, and is a BL Lac type blazar with unknown redshift.

Pulsars and Their Nebulae as EGRET Sources

Abstract:At the end of the EGRET mission, only 6-8 Galactic sources had been identified as young pulsars. Since then, several energetic pulsars have been discovered in EGRET error boxes along the Galactic plane, as well as several pulsar wind nebulae from which pulsations have not yet been discovered. Some of these nebulae are associated with moderately variable EGRET sources, suggesting that the gamma-ray emission might be coming from the nebula rather than from the pulsar magnetosphere. There is also a population of unidentified EGRET sources at mid-Galactic latitudes which have been proposed to be either nearby middle-aged pulsars or millisecond pulsars. I review the current status of observational studies of pulsars associated with EGRET sources and what they suggest the upcoming AGILE and GLAST gamma-ray missions might observe.

EGRET Gamma-Ray Source 2 EG J 0809 + 5117 , a Quasar with Redshift of 1 . 14 ?

Abstract:The low dispersion (400Å/mm) spectrum of the optical counterpart of a flat-spectrum radio source 87GB 080315.5+512613, which is one of two possible radio counterparts of 2EG J0809+5117, was obtained recently. The optical counterpart, which is 2.02 away from 87GB 080315.5+512613 and 19.3 away from 2EG J0809+5117, was identified as a quasar with redshift of 1.14. We noted that Mattox et al. (1997) suggested the other radio counterpart 87GB 080459.4+495915 (OJ 508), which is 87.1 away from 2EG J0809+5117, is the more potential identification, though it was previously suggested to be the identification (with low confidence) of another nearby EGRET source 2EG J0807+4849. Our observation suggests that it is quite possible that 87GB 080315.5+512613 is the identification of 2EG J0809+5117 rather than 87GB 080459.4+495915. But we still can not exclude the possibility of 87GB 080459.4+495915 at present. Moreover, in order to determine whether or not 87GB 080315.5+512613 is a blazar type quasar, the optical polarization and variability measures of its optical counterpart are strongly encouraged.

Abstract:The massive collection of personal data by personalization systems has rendered the preservation of privacy of individuals more and more difficult. Most of the proposed approaches to preserve privacy in personalization systems usually address this issue uniformly across users, thus ignoring the fact that users have different privacy attitudes and expectations (even among their own personal data). In this paper, we propose to account for this non-uniformity of privacy expectations by introducing the concept of heterogeneous differential privacy. This notion captures both the variation of privacy expectations among users as well as across different pieces of information related to the same user. We also describe an explicit mechanism achieving heterogeneous differential privacy, which is a modification of the Laplacian mechanism by Dwork, McSherry, Nissim, and Smith. In a nutshell, this mechanism achieves heterogeneous differential privacy by manipulating the sensitivity of the function using a linear transformation on the input domain. Finally, we evaluate on real datasets the impact of the proposed mechanism with respect to a semantic clustering task. The results of our experiments demonstrate that heterogeneous differential privacy can account for different privacy attitudes while sustaining a good level of utility as measured by the recall for the semantic clustering task.

Abstract:The direct redshift determination of BL Lac objects is highly challenging as the emission in the optical and near-infrared bands is largely dominated by the non-thermal emission from the relativistic jet, which points very close to our line of sight. Therefore, the optical spectra of BL Lac objects often show no spectral lines from the host galaxy. In this work, we aim to overcome this difficulty by attempting to detect the host galaxy and derive redshift constraints based on assumptions on the galaxy magnitude (`imaging redshifts'). Imaging redshifts were derived by obtaining deep optical images under good seeing conditions, making it possible to detect the host galaxy as a weak extension of the point-like source. We then derived the imaging redshift by using the host galaxy as a standard candle, employing two different methods. We determine the imaging redshift for 9 out of 17 blazars that we observed as part of this programme. The redshift range of these targets is 0.28-0.60, and the two methods used to derive the redshift give very consistent results within the uncertainties. We also performed a detailed comparison of the imaging redshifts with those obtained using other methods, such as direct spectroscopic constraints or looking for groups of galaxies close to the blazar. We show that the constraints from the different methods are consistent and that combining the three constraints narrows down the redshift. For example, in the case of J2156.0+1818, which is the most distant source for which we detect the host galaxy, the redshift range is narrowed to $0.63<z<0.71$. This makes the source interesting for future studies of extragalactic background light in the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory era.

Abstract:We study the effect of magnetic Mn ions on the two-band superconductor MgB_2, and compute both the total and spin resolved scanning tunneling spectrum in the vicinity of the magnetic impurity. We show that when the internal structure of the Mn ion's $d$-shell is taken into account, multiple Shiba states appear in the spectrum. These multiplets were missed by previous calculations based on simplistic models, and their presence could alter significantly the overall interpretation of local tunneling spectra for a wide range of superconducting hosts and magnetic impurities

The Spectral Shape of the Gamma-ray Background from Blazars

Abstract:The spectral shape of the unresolved emission from different classes of gamma-ray emitters can be used to disentangle the contributions from these populations to the extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGRB). We present a calculation of the unabsorbed spectral shape of the unresolved blazar contribution to the EGRB starting from the spectral index distribution (SID) of resolved EGRET blazars derived through a maximum-likelihood analysis accounting for measurement errors. In addition, we explicitly calculate the uncertainty in this theoretically predicted spectral shape, which enters through the spectral index distribution parameters. We find that: (a) the unresolved blazar emission spectrum is only mildly convex, and thus, even if blazars are shown by GLAST to be a dominant contribution to the ERGB at lower energies, they may be insufficient to explain the EGRB at higher energies; (b) the theoretically predicted unresolved spectral shape involves significant uncertainties due to the limited constraints provided by EGRET data on the SID parameters, which are comparable to the statistical uncertainties of the observed EGRET EGRB at high energies; (c) the increased number statistics which will be provided by GLAST will be sufficient to reduce this uncertainty by at least a factor of three.

Abstract:High-$z$ blazars (z $\geq 2.5$) are the most powerful class of persistent $\gamma$-ray sources in the Universe. These objects possess the highest jet powers and luminosities and have black hole masses often in excess of $10^9$ solar masses. In addition, high-$z$ blazars are important cosmological probes and serve as test objects for blazar evolution models. Due to their large distance, their high-energy emission typically peaks below the GeV range, which makes them difficult to study with Fermi/LAT. Therefore, only the very brightest objects are detectable and, to date, only a small number of high-z blazars have been detected with Fermi/LAT. In this work, we studied the monthly binned long-term $\gamma$-ray emission of a sample of 176 radio and optically detected blazars that have not been reported as known $\gamma$-ray sources in the 3FGL catalog. In order to account for false-positive detections, we calculated monthly Fermi/LAT light curves for a large sample of blank sky positions and derived the number of random fluctuations that we expect at various test statistic (TS) levels. For a given blazar, a detection of TS > 9 in at least one month is expected $\sim 15\%$ of the time. Although this rate is too high to secure detection of an individual source, half of our sample shows such single-month $\gamma$-ray activity, indicating a population of high-energy blazars at distances of up to z=5.2. Multiple TS > 9 monthly detections are unlikely to happen by chance, and we have detected several individual new sources in this way, including the most distant $\gamma$-ray blazar, BZQ J1430+4204 (z = 4.72). Finally, two new $\gamma$-ray blazars at redshifts of z = 3.63 and z = 3.11 are unambiguously detected via very significant (TS > 25) flares in individual monthly time bins.
