Abstract:A couple of issues concerning the effective dynamics of D-branes in string theory are discussed. Primarily, I am concerned with linearization of the actions by introduction of non-propagating fields and a full super- and kappa-symmetric description of D-branes.

Abstract:We introduce a new action S_standard^(ρ,h; Φ,g,B,C) for D-branes that is to D-branes as the Polyakov action is to fundamental strings. This `standard action' is abstractly a non-Abelian gauged sigma model — based on maps φ: (X^Az,E;∇)→ Y from an Azumaya/matrix manifold X^Az with a fundamental module E with a connection ∇ to Y — enhanced by the dilaton term, the gauge-theory term, and the Chern-Simons/Wess-Zumino term that couples (φ,∇) to Ramond-Ramond field. In a special situation, this new theory merges the theory of harmonic maps and a gauge theory, with a nilpotent type fuzzy extension. With the analysis developed in D(13.1) (arXiv:1606.08529 [hep-th]) for such maps and an improved understanding of the hierarchy of various admissible conditions on the pairs (φ,∇) beyond D(13.2.1) (arXiv:1611.09439 [hep-th]) and how they resolve the built-in obstruction to pull-push of covariant tensors under a map from a noncommutative manifold to a commutative manifold, we develop further in this note some covariant differential calculus needed and apply them to work out the first variation — and hence the corresponding equations of motion for D-branes — of the standard action and the second variation of the kinetic term for maps and the dilaton term in this action. Compared with the non-Abelian Dirac-Born-Infeld action constructed in D(13.1) along the same line, the current note brings the Nambu-Goto-string-to-Polyakov-string analogue to D-branes. The current bosonic setting is the first step toward the dynamics of fermionic D-branes (cf. D(11.2): arXiv:1412.0771 [hep-th]) and their quantization as fundamental dynamical objects, in parallel to what happened to the theory of fundamental strings during years 1976–1981.

Abstract:We study the dynamics governing space-time filling D-branes on Type II flux backgrounds preserving four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetry. The four-dimensional superpotentials and D-terms are derived. The analysis is kept on completely general grounds thanks to the use of recently proposed generalized calibrations, which also allow one to show the direct link of the superpotentials and D-terms with BPS domain walls and cosmic strings respectively. In particular, our D-brane setting reproduces the tension of D-term strings found from purely four-dimensional analysis. The holomorphicity of the superpotentials is also studied and a moment map associated to the D-terms is proposed. Among different examples, we discuss an application to the study of D7-branes on SU(3)-structure backgrounds, which reproduces and generalizes some previous results.
Dynamics of D-branes I. The non-Abelian Dirac-Born-Infeld action, its first variation, and the equations of motion for D-branes --- with remarks on the non-Abelian Chern-Simons/Wess-Zumino term

Abstract:In earlier works, D(1) (arXiv:0709.1515 [math.AG]), D(11.1) (arXiv:1406.0929 [math.DG]), D(11.2) (arXiv:1412.0771 [hep-th]), and D(11.3.1) (arXiv:1508.02347 [math.DG]), we have explained why a D-brane in string theory, when treated as a fundamental dynamical object, can be described by a map $varphi$ from an Azumaya/matrix manifold $X^{Az}$ (cf. D-brane world-volume) with a fundamental module with a connection $(E,nabla)$ (cf. Chan-Paton bundle) to the target space-time $Y$. In this sequel, we construct a non-Abelian Dirac-Born-Infeld action functional $S_{DBI}^{(Phi, g, B)}(varphi,nabla)$ for such pairs $(varphi,nabla)$. We next develop a technical tool needed to study variations of this action and apply it to derive the first variation $delta S_{DBI}^{(Phi,g,B)}/delta(varphi,nabla)$ of $S_{DBI}^{(Phi,g,B)}$ with respect to $(varphi,nabla)$. The equations of motion that govern the dynamics of D-branes then follow. A complete action for a D-brane world-volume must include also the Chern-Simons/Wess-Zumino term $S_{CS/WZ}^{(C)}(varphi,nabla)$ that governs how the D-brane world-volume couples with the Ramond-Ramond fields $C$ on $Y$. In the current notes, a version $S^{(C,B)}_{CS/WZ}(varphi,nabla)$ of non-Abelian Chern-Simons/Wess-Zumino action functional for $(varphi,nabla)$ that follows the same guide with which we construct $S^{(Phi,g,B)}_{DBI}(varphi,nabla)$ is constructed for lower-dimensional D-branes (i.e. D(-1)-, D0-, D1-, D2-branes). Its first variation $delta S^{(C,B)}_{CS/WZ}(varphi,nabla)/delta(varphi,nabla)$ is derived and its contribution to the equations of motion for $(varphi, nabla)$ follows. The current notes lay down a foundation toward the dynamics of D-branes along the line of this D-project.

Abstract: In this Part II of D(11), we introduce new objects: super-$C^k$-schemes and Azumaya super-$C^k$-manifolds with a fundamental module (or, synonymously, matrix super-$C^k$-manifolds with a fundamental module), and extend the study in D(11.1) ([L-Y3], arXiv:1406.0929 [math.DG]) to define the notion of `differentiable maps from an Azumaya/matrix supermanifold with a fundamental module to a real manifold or supermanifold'. This allows us to introduce the notion of `fermionic D-branes' in two different styles, one parallels Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz fermionic string and the other Green-Schwarz fermionic string. A more detailed discussion on the Higgs mechanism on dynamical D-branes in our setting, taking maps from the D-brane world-volume to the space-time in question and/or sections of the Chan-Paton bundle on the D-brane world-volume as Higgs fields, is also given for the first time in the D-project. Finally note that mathematically string theory begins with the notion of a differentiable map from a string world-sheet (a $2$-manifold) to a target space-time (a real manifold). In comparison to this, D(11.1) and the current D(11.2) together bring us to the same starting point for studying D-branes in string theory as dynamical objects.

Abstract: We consider D-branes in string theory and address the issue of how to describe them mathematically as a fundamental object (as opposed to a solitonic object) of string theory in the realm in differential and symplectic geometry. The notion of continuous maps, $k$-times differentiable maps, and smooth maps from an Azumaya/matrix manifold with a fundamental module to a (commutative) real manifold $Y$ is developed. Such maps are meant to describe D-branes or matrix branes in string theory when these branes are light and soft with only small enough or even zero brane-tension. When $Y$ is a symplectic manifold (resp. a Calabi-Yau manifold; a $7$-manifold with $G_2$-holonomy; a manifold with an almost complex structure $J$), the corresponding notion of Lagrangian maps (resp. special Lagrangian maps; associative maps, coassociative maps; $J$-holomorphic maps) are introduced. Indicative examples linking to symplectic geometry and string theory are given. This provides us with a language and part of the foundation required to study themes, new or old, in symplectic geometry and string theory, including (1) $J$-holomorphic D-curves (with or without boundary), (2) quantization and dynamics of D-branes in string theory, (3) a definition of Fukaya category guided by Lagrangian maps from Azumaya manifolds with a fundamental module with a connection, (4) a theory of fundamental matrix strings or D-strings, and (5) the nature of Ramond-Ramond fields in a space-time. The current note D(11.1) is the symplectic/differential-geometric counterpart of the more algebraic-geometry-oriented first two notes D(1) ([L-Y1]) (arXiv:0709.1515 [math.AG]) and D(2) ([L-L-S-Y], with Si Li and Ruifang Song) (arXiv:0809.2121 [math.AG]) in this project.

Abstract:We derive new actions for the bosonic p-brane, super p-brane and the p-brane moving in AdS(dS) space-times using the theory of non-linear realisation without requiring the adoption of any constraints or using superfields. The Goldstone boson associated with the breaking of Lorentz transformations becomes a dynamical field whose equation of motion relates it algebraically to the remaining Goldstone fields.

Abstract:Following is a collection of lecture notes on D-branes, which may be used by the reader as preparation for applications to modern research applications such as: the AdS/CFT and other gauge theory/geometry correspondences, Matrix Theory and stringy non-commutative geometry, etc. In attempting to be reasonably self-contained, the notes start from classical point-particles and develop the subject logically (but selectively) through classical strings, quantisation, D-branes, supergravity, superstrings, string duality, including many detailed applications. Selected focus topics feature D-branes as probes of both spacetime and gauge geometry, highlighting the role of world-volume curvature and gauge couplings, with some non-Abelian cases. Other advanced topics which are discussed are the (presently) novel tools of research such as fractional branes, the enhancon mechanism, D(ielectric)-branes and the emergence of the fuzzy/non-commutative sphere.

Abstract:The derivation of the complete anti-D3-brane low energy effective action in KKLT is reviewed. All worldvolume fields are included, together with the background moduli. The result is recast into a manifest supersymmetric form in terms of the three independent functions of $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity in four dimensions: the Kaehler potential, the superpotential and the gauge kinetic function. The latter differs from the expression one would expect by analogy with the D3-brane case.

Abstract:In the present paper we explicitly construct the on-shell supersymmetric component action for a 3-brane moving in D=8 within the nonlinear realizations framework. Similarly to the previously considered case of the super 3-brane in D=6, all ingredients entering the component action follow from the nonlinear realizations approach. The component action of the 3-brane possesses N=4, d=4 supersymmetry partially broken to N=2, d=4 one. The basic Goldstone superfield is the generalized version of N=2,d=4 hypermultiplet. The action has a structure, such that all terms of higher orders in the fermions are hidden inside the covariant derivatives and vielbeins. The main part of the component action mimics its bosonic cousin in which the ordinary space-time derivatives and the bosonic worldvolume are replaced by their covariant (with respect to broken supersymmetry) supersymmetric analogs. The spontaneously broken supersymmetry fixes the Ansatz for the component action, up to two constant parameters. The role of the unbroken supersymmetry is just to fix these parameters.

Nontrivial Polydispersity Exponents in Aggregation Models

Abstract:We consider the scaling solutions of Smoluchowski's equation of irreversible aggregation, for a non gelling collision kernel. The scaling mass distribution f(s) diverges as s^{-tau} when s->0. tau is non trivial and could, until now, only be computed by numerical simulations. We develop here new general methods to obtain exact bounds and good approximations of $\tau$. For the specific kernel KdD(x,y)=(x^{1/D}+y^{1/D})^d, describing a mean-field model of particles moving in d dimensions and aggregating with conservation of ``mass'' s=R^D (R is the particle radius), perturbative and nonperturbative expansions are derived. For a general kernel, we find exact inequalities for tau and develop a variational approximation which is used to carry out the first systematic study of tau(d,D) for KdD. The agreement is excellent both with the expansions we derived and with existing numerical values. Finally, we discuss a possible application to 2d decaying turbulence.

Abstract:In [L-Y5] (D(6): arXiv:1003.1178 [math.SG]) we introduced the notion of Azumaya $C^{\infty}$-manifolds with a fundamental module and morphisms therefrom to a complex manifold. In the current sequel, we use this notion to give a prototypical definition of supersymmetric D-branes of A-type (i.e. A-branes) -- in an appropriate region of the Wilson's theory-space of string theory -- as special Lagrangian morphisms from such objects with a unitary, minimally flat connection-with-singularities. This merges Donaldson's picture of special Lagrangian submanifolds and the Polchinski-Grothendieck Ansatz for D-branes on a Calabi-Yau space. Basic phenomena of D-branes such as Higgsing/un-Higgsing and large- vs. small-brane wrapping can be realized via deformations of such morphisms. Classical results of Alexander, Hilden, Lozano, Montesinos, and Thurston suggest then a genus-like expansion of the path-integral of D3-branes. Similarly for D2-branes and M2-branes. In the last section, we use the technical results of Joyce on desingularizations of special Lagrangian submanifolds with conical singularities to explain how A-branes thus defined can be driven and re-assemble under a split attractor flow, as studied in an earlier work of Denef. This section is to be read with arXiv:hep-th/0107152 of Denef and arXiv:math.DG/0303272 of Joyce.
Constraining the D3-brane effective action

Abstract:We consider higher derivative corrections of the type D^{2k} R^2 in the effective action of the D3-brane with trivial normal bundle. Based on the perturbative disc and annulus amplitudes, and constraints of supersymmetry and duality, we argue that these interactions are protected, at least for small values of k. Their coefficient functions receive only a finite number of perturbative contributions, and non-perturbative contributions from D-instantons. We propose expressions for these modular forms for low values of k.

Abstract:The 2-brane and 4-brane solutions of ten dimensional IIA supergravity have a dual interpretation as Dirichlet-branes, or ‘D-branes’, of type IIA superstring theory and as ‘M-branes’ of an S1-compactified eleven dimensional supermembrane theory, or M-theory. This eleven-dimensional connection is used to determine the ten-dimensional Lorentz covariant worldvolume action for the Dirichlet super 2-brane, and its coupling to background spacetime fields. It is further used to show that the 2-brane can carry the Ramond-Ramond charge of the Dirichlet 0-brane as a topological charge, and an interpretation of the 2-brane as a 0-brane condensate is suggested. Similar results are found for the Dirichlet 4-brane via its interpretation as a double-dimensional reduction of the eleven-dimensional fivebrane. It is suggested that the latter be interpreted as a D-brane of an open eleven-dimensional supermembrane.

Abstract:We generalize the ideas and formalism of two-time physics from particle dynamics to some specific examples of string and p-brane (p≥1) dynamics. The two-time string or p-brane action can be gauge fixed to produce various one-time string or p-brane actions that are dual to each other under gauge transformations. We discuss the particular gauges that correspond to tensionless strings and p-branes in flat (d−1)+1 spacetime, rigid strings and p-branes in flat (d−1)+1 spacetime, and tensionless strings and p-branes propagating in the AdSd−n×Sn backgrounds.

Inner Brane: A D3-brane in Nappi-Witten Space from an Inner Automorphism

Abstract:Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) models are abstract conformal field theories with an infinite-dimensional symmetry which accounts for their integrability, and at the same time they have a sigma-model description of closed-string propagation on group manifolds which, in turn, endows the models with an intuitive geometric meaning. We exploit this dual algebraic and geometric property of WZW models to construct an explicit example of a field-dependent reflection matrix for open strings in the Nappi-Witten model. Demanding the momentum outflow at the boundary to be zero determines a certain combination of the left and right chiral currents at the boundary. This same reflection matrix is obtained algebraically from an inner automorphism, giving rise to a space-filling D-brane. Half of the infinite-dimensional affine KacMoody symmetry present in the closed-string theory is preserved by this unique combination of the left and the right chiral currents. The operator-product expansions of these boundary currents are computed explicitly and they are shown to obey the same current algebra as those of the closed-string chiral currents. Different choices of the inner automorphisms correspond to different background gauge field configurations. Only those B-field configurations, and the corresponding D-branes, that preserve the diagonal part of the infinite-dimensional chiral algebras are allowed. In this way the existence of the D-branes in curved spaces is further constrained by the underlying symmetry of the ambient spacetime.
Aspects of kink-like structures in 2D dilaton gravity

Abstract:The topological structures that arise from two-dimensional models are relevant physically and the first step towards understanding more complex systems. In this work, one studies the kink-like solutions of the matter field that emerge in a two-dimensional dilaton gravity scenario. Considering this scenario, we examine the linear stability of the matter field and the translational mode. Due to the specific profile of the solutions found, a differential configurational complexity (DCC) analysis of the system was necessary to confirm the nature of the structures. Furthermore, we study the interforce and scattering process, considering a pair of kink-antikink-like solutions in a fixed time ($t=0$).
