Abstract:Theory and phenomenology of the eta_c photo- and electroproduction is developed from the point of view of probing the odderon singularity in QCD which corresponds to the three gluon exchange mechanism. This mechanism leads to the cross-sections which are independent of W^2 for the exchange of three non-interacting gluons or exhibit increase with increasing W^2 (or 1/x) for the odderon intercept above unity. The \eta_c electroproduction in the three gluon exchange mechanism is shown to be entirely controlled by the transversely polarised virtual photons. The magnitude of the eta_c photoproduction cross-section is estimated to be around 11-45pb. The t-dependence of the differential cross-section is also discussed.
High Energy Physics - Phenomenology
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore the "odderon" singularity in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) by studying the photo - and electroproduction processes of the ηc meson. Specifically, the authors hope to use the experimental data from the HERA accelerator to verify the existence of the odderon and quantitatively describe its properties. ### Main problems 1. **Odderon singularity**: In the high - energy limit, in addition to the pomeron in QCD, there may also exist a singularity called "odderon". The pomeron corresponds to the exchange of two interacting gluons, while the odderon is described by the three - gluon exchange mechanism. Different from the pomeron which has vacuum quantum numbers and positive charge conjugation, the odderon has negative charge conjugation \(C = - 1\) and isospin \(I = 0\), similar to the quantum numbers of the ω Regge pole. 2. **Production of ηc meson**: The photo - and electroproduction processes of the ηc meson are considered to be a very useful measurement means to test the existence of the odderon in QCD. In particular, due to the Zweig rule, the contribution of the ω Reggeon to this process is expected to be strongly suppressed, so the production of the ηc meson is mainly dominated by the odderon. ### Research objectives The main objectives of the paper are: - **Quantitative description**: Develop theoretical and phenomenological descriptions of the photo - and electroproduction processes of the ηc meson, especially the description under the three - gluon exchange mechanism. - **Experimental verification**: Verify the existence of the odderon through HERA experimental data and estimate its cross - section and other relevant physical quantities. - **Comparative analysis**: Conduct a comparative analysis between the production of the ηc meson and other processes that may detect the odderon (such as γ∗p and γγ interactions). ### Key formulas - **Cross - section formula**: For the photo - production process, the differential cross - section formula is: \[ \frac{d\sigma}{dt}(\gamma + p\rightarrow\eta_c + p)=\frac{1}{16\pi W^4}\sum_{i = 1}^{2}|A_i|^2 \] - **Virtual photon production cross - section**: \[ \frac{d\sigma}{dtdQ^2dy}(e + p\rightarrow e'+\eta_c + p)=\frac{\alpha}{\pi yQ^2}\left(1 - y+\frac{y^2}{2}\right)\frac{d\sigma}{dt}(\gamma^* + p\rightarrow\eta_c + p) \] where \(y=\frac{q\cdot p}{p_e\cdot p}\), and \(p_e\) is the four - momentum of the incident electron. ### Conclusion The paper summarizes the cross - section characteristics of the photo - and electroproduction processes of the ηc meson in the high - energy limit and estimates that the total photo - production cross - section is approximately 11 - 45 pb. These cross - sections are either independent of the center - of - mass energy squared \(W^2\) or increase slowly with the increase of \(W^2\) (approximately \((W^2)^{0.2}\)). In addition, the production of the ηc meson is not the only process that can detect the QCD odderon, and the photo - production processes of other c¯c bound states with positive charge conjugation may also be useful. Through these studies, the authors hope to provide experimental evidence for the existence of the odderon in QCD and provide a basis for further theoretical analysis.
