Abstract:We present results from XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer observations of the prototypical starburst galaxy M82. These high resolution spectra represent the best X-ray spectra to date of a starburst galaxy. A complex array of lines from species over a wide range of temperatures is seen, the most prominent being due to Lyman-alpha emission from abundant low Z elements such as N, O, Ne, Mg and Si. Emission lines from Helium-like charge states of the same elements are also seen in emission, as are strong lines from the entire Fe-L series. Further, the OVII line complex is resolved and is seen to be consistent with gas in collisional ionization equilibrium. Spectral fitting indicates emission from a large mass of gas with a differential emission measure over a range of temperatures (from 0.2 keV to 1.6 keV, peaking at 0.7 keV), and evidence for super-solar abundances of several elements is indicated. Spatial analysis of the data indicates that low energy emission is more extended to the south and east of the nucleus than to the north and west. Higher energy emission is far more centrally concentrated.

A deep X-ray observation of M82 with XMM-Newton

Abstract:We report on the analysis of a deep (100 ks) observation of the starburst galaxy M82 with the EPIC and RGS instruments on board the X-ray telescope XMM-Newton. The broad-band (0.5-10 keV) emission is due to at least three spectral components: i) continuum emission from point sources; ii) thermal plasma emission from hot gas; iii) charge exchange emission from neutral metals (Mg and Si). The plasma emission has a double-peaked differential emission measure, with the peaks at ~0.5 keV and ~7 keV. Spatially resolved spectroscopy has shown that the chemical absolute abundances are not uniformly distributed in the outflow, but are larger in the outskirts and smaller close to the galaxy centre. The abundance ratios also show spatial variations. The X-ray derived Oxygen abundance is lower than that measured in the atmospheres of red supergiant stars, leading to the hypothesis that a significant fraction of Oxygen ions have already cooled off and no longer emit at energies > ~0.5 keV.

Origin of the diffuse 4-8 keV emission in M82

Abstract:We present the first spatially resolved, X-ray spectroscopic study of the 4-8 keV diffuse emission found in the central part of the nearby starburst galaxy M82 on a few arcsecond scales. The new details that we see allow a number of important conclusions to be drawn on the nature of the hot gas and its origin as well as feedback on the ISM. We use archival data from Chandra with an exposure time of 570 ks. The Fexxv emission at 6.7 keV, expected from metal-enriched hot gas, is enhanced only in a limited area close to the starburst disc and is weak or almost absent over the rest of the diffuse emission, resulting in spatial variations in EW from <0.1 keV to 1.9 keV. This shows the presence of non-thermal emission due to inverse Compton scattering of the FIR photons by radio emitting cosmic ray electrons. The morphological resemblance between the diffuse X-ray, radio, and FIR emission maps supports this concept. Our decomposition of the diffuse emission spectrum indicates that ~70% of the 4-8 keV luminosity originates from the inverse Compton emission. The metal-rich hot gas with kT~5 keV makes a minor contribution to the 4-8 keV continuum, but it accounts for the majority of the observed Fexxv line. This hot gas appears to emerge from the circumnuclear starburst ring and fill the galactic chimneys identified as mid-infrared and radio emission voids. The energetics argument suggests that much of the supernova energy in the starburst site has gone into creating the chimneys and is transported to the halo. We argue that a hot, rarefied environment produced by strong supernova feedback results in displacing the brightest X-ray and radio supernova remnants which are instead found to reside in GMC. We find a faint X-ray source with a radio counterpart, close to the kinematic centre of the galaxy and we carefully examine the possibility that this source is a low-luminosity AGN in ADAF phase.

From the low temperature and an estimation of the CX emitting volume, we find that the CX primarily occurs in a limited region at the interface of the plasma and gas whose temperature rapidly decreases due to thermal conduction.

Abstract:We present results from the analysis of deep ROSAT HRI and PSPC observations of the spiral galaxy M81. The inferred total (0.5-2 keV band) luminosity of M81 is ~3 × 1040 ergs s-1, excluding the contribution from identified interlopers found within the D25 ellipse. The nucleus of the galaxy alone accounts for about 65% of this luminosity. The rest is due to 26 other X-ray sources (contributing ~10%) and to apparently diffuse emission, which is seen across much of the galactic disk and is particularly bright in the bulge region around the nucleus. Spectral analysis further gives evidence for a soft component, which can be characterized by a two-temperature optically thin plasma with temperature at ~0.15 and 0.60 keV and an absorption of the galactic foreground only. These components, accounting for ~13% of the X-ray emission from the region, apparently arise in a combination of hot gas and faint discrete sources. We find interesting spatial coincidences of luminous (1037-1040 ergs s-1) and variable X-ray sources with shock-heated optical nebulae. Three of them are previously classified as supernova remnant candidates. The other one is far off the main body of M81 but is apparently associated with a dense H I concentration produced most likely by the tidal interactions of the galaxy with its companions. These associations suggest that such optical nebulae may be powered by outflows from luminous X-ray binaries, which are comparable to, or more luminous than, Galactic "microquasars."
The Seyfert-Starburst Connection in X-rays. II. Results and Implications

Abstract:We present the results of X-ray imaging and spectroscopic analysis of a sample of Seyfert 2 galaxies that contain starbursts, based on their optical and UV characteristics. These composite galaxies exhibit extended, soft, thermal X-ray emission, which we attribute to their starburst components. Comparing their X-ray and far-infrared properties with ordinary Seyfert and starburst galaxies, we identify the spectral characteristics of their various intrinsic emission sources. The observed far-infrared emission of the composite galaxies may be associated almost exclusively with star formation, rather than the active nucleus. The ratio of the hard X-ray luminosity to the far-infrared and [O III] 5007 luminosity distinguishes most of these composite galaxies from ``pure'' Seyfert 2 galaxies, while their total observed hard X-ray luminosity distinguishes them from ``pure'' starbursts. The hard nuclear X-ray source is generally heavily absorbed (N_H > 10^{23} cm^{-2}) in the composite galaxies. Based on these results, we suggest that the interstellar medium of the nuclear starburst is a significant source of absorption. The majority of the sample are located in groups or are interacting with other galaxies, which may trigger the starburst or allow rapid mass infall to the central black hole, or both. We conclude that starbursts are energetically important in a significant fraction of active galaxies, and starbursts and active galactic nuclei may be part of a common evolutionary sequence.

X-ray Absorption and Optical Extinction in the Partially Obscured Seyfert Nucleus in Mrk 1393

Abstract:We present a detailed study of the X-ray and optical spectra of the luminous Seyfert galaxy Mrk 1393, which revealed variable partial obscuration of the active nucleus. The X-ray spectra obtained by XMM-Newton and Swift show moderate absorption with a column density around 3x10^21 cm^-2, consistent with a dust-reddening interpretation of the steep Balmer decrement seen in recent optical spectra. The X-ray flux in the 0.5 to 2 keV band during the XMM-Newton observation in 2005 and Swift observation in 2006 was a factor 6 brighter than that of the ROSAT All Sky Survey in 1991. In the past 4 years, the broad H\alpha line brightened by a factor of 4 accompanied by a decrease in the Balmer decrement. A comparison with literature spectra reveals variations in the dust extinction on time scales of several years, suggesting that the obscuring material is very close to the active nucleus. These observations indicate that a dust-to-gas ratio as high as the Galactic value can be present in moderately thick gas in the vicinity of the central engine within a few parsecs. We suggest that the obscuring material may be debris disrupted from the dusty torus.

X-ray supernova remnants in the starburst region of M82

Abstract:We searched for X-ray supernova remnants (SNRs) in the starburst region of M82, using archival data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory with a total effective exposure time of 620 ks with an X-ray spectroscopic selection. Strong line-emission from Fe xxv at 6.7 keV is a characteristic spectral feature of hot, shocked gas of young SNRs and distinctive among the discrete sources in the region populated by X-ray binaries. We selected candidates using narrow-band imaging aimed at the line excess and identified six (and possibly a seventh) X-ray SNRs. Two previously known examples were recovered by our selection. Five of them have radio counterparts, including the radio supernova SN2008iz, which was discovered as a radio transient in 2008. It shows a hard X-ray spectrum with a blueshifted Fe K feature with v ~ -2700 km/s, both of which suggest its youth. The 4-8 keV luminosities of the selected SNRs are in the range of (0.3-3)e38 erg/s. We made a crude estimate of the supernova rate, assuming that more luminous SNRs are younger, and found 0.06 (0.03-0.13) /yr, in agreement with the supernova rates estimated by radio observations and the generally believed star formation rate of M82, although the validity of the assumption is questionable. A sum of the Fe xxv luminosity originating from the selected X-ray SNRs consists of half of the total Fe xxv luminosity observed in the central region of M82. We briefly discuss its implications for starburst winds and the Fe xxv emission in more luminous starburst galaxies.

A Comprehensive X-ray Spectral Analysis of the Seyfert 1.5 NGC 3227

Abstract:We present results of a 100 ks XMM observation of the Seyfert 1.5 NGC 3227. Our best-fit broadband model to the pn spectrum consists of a moderately flat (photon index 1.57) hard X-ray power-law absorbed by cold gas with N_H = 3 * 10^21 cm^-2, plus a strong soft excess, modeled as a steep power law with a photon index of 3.35, absorbed by cold gas with N_H = 9 * 10^20 cm^-2. The soft excess normalization increases by ~20% in ~20 ks, independently of the hard X-ray component, and the UV continuum, tracked via the OM, also shows a strong increasing trend over the observation, consistent with reprocessing of soft X-ray emission. Warm absorber signatures are evident in both the EPIC and RGS; we model two layers, with log(xi) = 1.2 and 2.9 erg cm s^-1, and with similar column densities (~1-2 * 10^21 cm^-2). The outflow velocities relative to systemic of the high- and low-ionization absorbers are estimated to be -(2060(+240,-170)) km/s and -(420(+430,-190)) km/s, respectively. The Fe K alpha line width FWHM is 7000 +/- 1500 km/s; its inferred radius is consistent with the BLR and with the inner radius of the dust reverberation-mapped by Suganuma et al. An emission feature near 6.0 keV is modeled equally well as a narrow redshifted Fe K line, possibly associated with a disk "hot-spot," or as the red wing to a relativistically broadened Fe line profile. Swift-BAT and archival RXTE data suggest at most weak Compton reflection (R <~ 0.5), and a high-energy cutoff near 100 keV. From RXTE monitoring, we find tentative evidence for a significant fraction of the Fe line flux to track continuum variations on time scales < 700 days.

Abstract:We present a spectral and imaging analysis of the XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy ESO138-G001, with the aim of characterizing the circumnuclear material responsible for the soft (0.3-2.0 keV) and hard (5-10 keV) X-ray emission. We confirm that the source is absorbed by Compton-thick gas. However, if a self-consistent model of reprocessing from cold toroidal material is used (MYTorus), a possible scenario requires the absorber to be inhomogenous, its column density along the line of sight being larger than the average column density integrated over all lines- of-sight through the torus. The iron emission line may be produced by moderately ionised iron (FeXII-FeXIII), as suggested by the shifted centroid energy and the low K{\beta}/K{\alpha} flux ratio. The soft X-ray emission is dominated by emission features, whose main excitation mechanism appears to be photoionisation, as confirmed by line diagnostics and the use of self-consistent models (CLOUDY).

Abstract:We present the results obtained from the analysis of three XMM-Newton observations of M83. The aims of the paper are studying the X-ray source populations in M83 and calculating the X-ray luminosity functions of X-ray binaries for different regions of the galaxy. We detected 189 sources in the XMM-Newton field of view in the energy range of 0.2-12 keV. We constrained their nature by means of spectral analysis, hardness ratios, studies of the X-ray variability, and cross-correlations with catalogues in X-ray, optical, infrared, and radio wavelengths. We identified and classified 12 background objects, five foreground stars, two X-ray binaries, one supernova remnant candidate, one super-soft source candidate and one ultra-luminous X-ray source. Among these sources, we classified for the first time three active galactic nuclei (AGN) candidates. We derived X-ray luminosity functions of the X-ray sources in M83 in the 2-10 keV energy range, within and outside the D_25 ellipse, correcting the total X-ray luminosity function for incompleteness and subtracting the AGN contribution. The X-ray luminosity function inside the D_25 ellipse is consistent with that previously observed by Chandra. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test shows that the X-ray luminosity function of the outer disc and the AGN luminosity distribution are uncorrelated with a probability of about 99.3%. We also found that the X-ray sources detected outside the D_25 ellipse and the uniform spatial distribution of AGNs are spatially uncorrelated with a significance of 99.5%. We interpret these results as an indication that part of the observed X-ray sources are X-ray binaries in the outer disc of M83.

Abstract:We present an X-ray study of our nearest starburst galaxy IC 10, based on XMM-Newton and Chandra observations. A list of 73 XMM-Newton and 28 Chandra detections of point-like X-ray sources in the field is provided; a substantial fraction of them are likely stellar objects in the Milky Way due to the low Galactic latitude location of IC 10. The brightest source in the IC 10 field, X-1, has a mean 0.3-8.0 keV luminosity of similar to 1.2 x 10(38) erg s(-1) and shows a large variation by a factor of up to similar to 6 on time-scales of similar to 10(4) s during the XMM-Newton observation. The X-ray spectra of the source indicate the presence of a multicolour blackbody accretion disc with an inner disc temperature T-in approximate to 1.1 keV. These results are consistent with the interpretation of the source as a stellar mass black hole (BH), probably accreting from a Wolf-Rayet (W-R) star companion. We infer the mass of this BH to be similar to 4 M circle dot if it is not spinning, or a factor of up to similar to 6 higher if there is significant spinning. We also detect an apparent diffuse soft X-ray emission component of IC 10. An effective method is devised to remove the X-ray CCD-readout streaks of X-1 that strongly affect the study of the diffuse component in the XMM-Newton and Chandra observations. We find that the diffuse X-ray morphology is oriented along the optical body of the galaxy and is chiefly associated with starburst regions. The diffuse component can be characterized by an optically thin thermal plasma with a mean temperature of similar to 4 x 10(6) K and a 0.5-2 keV luminosity of similar to 8 x 10(37) erg s(-1), representing only a small fraction of the expected mechanical energy inputs from massive stars in the galaxy. There is evidence that the hot gas is driving outflows from the starburst regions; therefore, the bulk of the energy inputs may be released in a galactic wind.
The remarkable X-ray spectrum of the Broad-Line Radio Galaxy 3C 445

Abstract:We present the results of the analysis of an archival 15 ks XMM-Newton observation of the nearby (z=0.057) radio-loud source 3C445, optically classified as a Broad-Line Radio Galaxy. While the RGS data are of insufficient quality to allow a meaningful analysis, the EPIC data show a remarkable X-ray spectrum. The 2-10 keV continuum is described by a heavily absorbed (Nh~ 1e22 - 1e23 cm-2) power law with photon index Gamma ~1.4, and strong (R~2) cold reflection. A narrow, unresolved Fe Kalpha emission line is detected, confirming previous findings, with EW 120eV. A soft excess is present below 2 keV over the extrapolation of the hard X-ray power law, which we model with a power law with the same photon index as the hard power law, absorbed by a column density Nh=6e20 cm-2 in excess to Galactic. A host of emission lines are present below 2 keV, confirming previous indications from ASCA, due to H- and He-like O, Mg, and Si. We attribute the origin of the lines to a photoionized gas, with properties very similar to radio-quiet obscured AGN. Two different ionized media, or a single stratified medium, are required to fit the soft X-ray data satisfactorily. The similarity of the X-ray spectrum of 3C445 to Seyferts underscores that the central engines of radio-loud and radio-quiet AGN similarly host both cold and warm gas.

Abstract:It has been proposed that the charge-exchange (CX) process at the interface between hot and cool interstellar gases could contribute significantly to the observed soft X-ray emission in star-forming galaxies. We analyze the XMM-Newton/reflection grating spectrometer (RGS) spectrum of M82 using a newly developed CX model combined with a single-temperature thermal plasma to characterize the volume-filling hot gas. The CX process is largely responsible for not only the strongly enhanced forbidden lines of the Kα triplets of various He-like ions but also good fractions of the Lyα transitions of C vi (∼87%), O viii, and N vii (≳50%) as well. In total about a quarter of the X-ray flux in the RGS 6–30 Å band originates in the CX. We infer an ion incident rate of 3 × 1051 s−1 undergoing CX at the hot and cool gas interface and an effective area of the interface of ∼2 × 1045 cm2 that is one order of magnitude larger than the cross section of the global biconic outflow. With the CX contribution accounted for, the best-fit temperature of the hot gas is 0.6 keV, and the metal abundances are approximately solar. We further show that the same CX/thermal plasma model also gives an excellent description of the EPIC-pn spectrum of the outflow Cap, projected at 11.6 kpc away from the galactic disk of M82. This analysis demonstrates that the CX is potentially an important contributor to the X-ray emission from starburst galaxies and also an invaluable tool to probe the interface astrophysics.

Abstract:We present a spatial analysis of the soft X-ray and H{\alpha} emissions from the outflow of the starburst galaxy M82. We find that the two emissions are tightly correlated on various scales. The O VII triplet of M82, as resolved by X-ray grating observations of XMM-Newton, is dominated by the forbidden line, inconsistent with the thermal prediction. The O VII triplet also shows some spatial variations. We discuss three possible explanations for the observed O VII triplet, including the charge exchange at interfaces between the hot outflow and neutral cool gas, a collisional non-equilibrium-ionization recombining plasma, and resonance scattering.

Abstract:CONTEXT: The variable X-ray spectra of AGN systematically show steep power-law high states and hard-spectrum low states. The hard low state has previously been found to be a component with only weak variability. The origin of this component and the relative importance of effects such as absorption and relativistic blurring are currently not clear. AIMS: In a follow-up of previous principal components analysis, we aim to determine the relative importance of scattering and absorption effects on the time-varying X-ray spectrum of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk~766. METHODS: Time-resolved spectroscopy, slicing XMM and Suzaku data down to 25 ks elements, is used to investigate whether absorption or scattering components dominate the spectral variations in Mrk <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://766.Time" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>-resolved spectroscopy confirms that spectral variability in Mrk 766 can be explained by either of two interpretations of principal components analysis. Detailed investigation confirm rapid changes in the relative strengths of scattered and direct emission or rapid changes in absorber covering fraction provide good explanations of most of the spectral variability. However, a strong correlation between the 6.97 keV absorption line and the primary continuum together with rapid opacity changes show that variations in a complex and multi-layered absorber, most likely a disk wind, are the dominant source of spectral variability in Mrk 766

A Major X-ray Outburst from an Ultraluminous X-Ray Source in M82

Abstract:We detected a major X-ray outburst from M82 with a duration of 79 days, an average flux of 5E-11 erg cm^-2 s^-1 in the 2-10 keV band, and strong variability. The X-ray spectrum remained hard throughout the outburst. We obtained a Chandra observation during the outburst that shows that the emission arises from the ultraluminous X-ray source X41.4+60. This source has an unabsorbed flux of (5.4 +/- 0.2)E-11 erg cm^-2 s^-1 in the 0.3-8 keV band, equivalent to an isotropic luminosity of 8.5E40 erg/s. The spectrum is adequately fitted with an absorbed power-law with a photon index of 1.55 +/- 0.05. This photon index is very similar to the value of 1.61 +/- 0.06 measured previously while the flux was (2.64 +/- 0.14)E-11 erg cm^-2 s^-1. Thus, the source appears to remain in the hard state even at the highest flux levels observed. The X-ray spectral and timing data available for X41.4+60 are consistent with the source being in a luminous hard state and a black hole mass in the range of one to a few thousand solar masses.
Revisiting the abundance pattern and charge-exchange emission in the centre of M82

Abstract:The interstellar medium (ISM) in starburst galaxies contains many chemical elements that are synthesised by core-collapse supernova explosions. By measuring the abundances of these metals, we can study the chemical enrichment within the galaxies and the transportation of metals into the circumgalactic environment through powerful outflows. We performed a spectral analysis of the X-ray emissions from the core of M82 using the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) on board XMM-Newton to accurately estimate the metal abundances in the ISM. We analysed over 300\,ks of RGS data observed with 14 position angles, covering a cross-dispersion width of 80\,arcsec. We employed multi-temperature thermal plasma components in collisional ionisation equilibrium (CIE) to reproduce the observed spectra, each of which exhibited a different spatial broadening. The O VII band CCD image shows a broader distribution that those for the O VIII and Fe-L bands. The O VIII line profiles have a prominent double-peaked structure that corresponds to the north- and southward outflows. The O VII triplet feature exhibits marginal peaks. A single CIE component that is convolved with the O VII band image approximately reproduces the spectral shape. A CIE model combined with a charge-exchange emission model also successfully reproduces the O VII line profiles. However, the ratio of these two components varies significantly with the observed position angles, which is physically implausible. Spectral fitting of the broadband spectra suggests a multi-temperature phase in the ISM that is approximated by three components at 0.1, 0.4, and 0.7\,keV. Notably, the 0.1\,keV component exhibits a broader distribution than the 0.4 and 0.7\,keV plasmas. The derived abundance pattern shows super-solar N/O, solar Ne/O and Mg/O, and half-solar Fe/O ratios. These results indicate the chemical enrichment by core-collapse supernovae in starburst galaxies.

Abstract:The bright Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG-6-30-15 has provided some of the best evidence to date for the existence of supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei. Observations with ASCA revealed an X-ray iron line profile shaped by strong Doppler and gravitational effects. In this paper the shape of the iron line, its variability characteristics and the robustness of this spectral interpretation are examined using the long XMM-Newton observation taken in 2001. A variety of spectral models, both including and excluding the effects of strong gravity, are compared to the data in a uniform fashion. The results strongly favour models in which the spectrum is shaped by emission from a relativistic accretion disc. It is far more difficult to explain the 3-10 keV spectrum using models dominated by absorption (either by warm or partially covering cold matter), emission line blends, curved continua or additional continuum components. These provide a substantially worse fit to the data and fail to explain other observations (such as the simultaneous BeppoSAX spectrum). This reaffirms the veracity of the relativistic `disc line' interpretation. The short term variability in the shape of the energy spectrum is investigated and explained in terms of a two-component emission model. Using a combination of spectral variability analyses the spectrum is successfully decomposed into a variable power-law component (PLC) and a reflection dominated component (RDC). The former is highly variable while the latter is approximately constant throughout the observation, leading to the well-known spectral variability patterns. (Abridged)
