Conformal Symmetry in Quantum Gravity

Abstract:We study the problem of how to derive conformal symmetry in the framework of quantum gravity. We start with a generic gravitational theory which is invariant under both the general coordinate transformation (GCT) and Weyl transformation (or equivalently, local scale transformation), and then construct its BRST formalism by fixing the gauge symmetries by the extended de Donder gauge and scalar gauge conditions. These gauge-fixing conditions are invariant under global $GL(4)$ and global scale transformations. The gauge-fixed and BRST invariant quantum action possesses a huge Poincaré-like $IOSp(10|10)$ global symmetry, from which we can construct an extended conformal symmetry in a flat Minkowski background in the sense that the Lorentz symmetry is replaced with the $GL(4)$ symmetry. Moreover, we construct the conventional conformal symmetry out of this extended symmetry. With a flat Minkowski background $\langle g_{\mu\nu} \rangle = \eta_{\mu\nu}$ and a non-zero scalar field $\langle \phi \rangle \neq 0$, the $GL(4)$ and global scale symmetries are spontaneously broken to the Lorentz symmetry, thereby proving that the graviton and the dilaton are respectively the corresponding Nambu-Goldstone bosons, and therefore they must be exactly massless at nonperturbative level. One of remarkable aspects in our findings is that in quantum gravity, a derivation of conformal symmetry does not depend on a classical action, and its generators are built from only the gauge-fixing and the FP ghost actions. Finally, we address a generalized Zumino theorem in quantum gravity.

Abstract:We present the manifestly covariant canonical operator formalism of a Weyl invariant (or equivalently, a locally scale invariant) gravity whose classical action consists of the well-known conformal gravity and Weyl invariant scalar-tensor gravity, on the basis of the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyupin (BRST) formalism. It is shown that there exists a Poincaré-like IOSp (8|8) global symmetry as in Einstein's general relativity, which should be contrasted to the case of only the Weyl invariant scalar-tensor gravity where we have a more extended Poincaré-like IOSp (10|10) global symmetry. This reduction of the global symmetry is attributed to the presence of the Stückelberg symmetry.

Abstract:A holographic conformal field theory is dual to semi-classical general relativity in Anti-de Sitter space coupled to matter fields. If the CFT factorizes in the large-$N$ limit, then all couplings in its dual are suppressed by the Planck scale, making the matter fields weakly interacting. We propose a mechanism to produce CFTs whose dual matter fields couple weakly to gravity, but interact strongly with each other. We achieve this by turning on exactly marginal multi-trace deformations, and quantify the effect using conformal perturbation theory.

Abstract:Multiple scalar fields appear in vast modern particle physics and gravity models. When they couple to gravity nonminimally, conformal transformation is utilized to bring the theory into the Einstein frame. However, the kinetic terms of scalar fields are usually not canonical, which makes analytic treatment difficult. Here, we investigate under what conditions the theories can be transformed to the quasicanonical form, in which case the effective metric tensor in field space is conformally flat. We solve the relevant nonlinear partial differential equations for an arbitrary number of scalar fields and present several solutions that may be useful for future phenomenological model building, including the σ model with a particular nonminimal coupling. We also find conformal flatness can always be achieved in some modified gravity theories, for example, the Starobinsky model.

Abstract:Conventional turbo codes (CTCs) usually employ a block-oriented interleaving so that each block is separately encoded and decoded. As interleaving and de-interleaving are performed within a block, the message-passing process associated with an iterative decoder is limited to proceed within the corresponding range. This paper presents a new turbo coding scheme that uses a special interleaver structure and a multiple-round early termination test involving both sign check and a CRC code. The new interleaver structure is naturally suited for high speed parallel processing and the resulting coding system offers new design options and tradeoffs that are not available to CTCs. In particular, it becomes possible for the decoder to employ an efficient inter-block collaborative decoding algorithm, passing the information obtained from termination test proved blocks to other unproved blocks. It also becomes important to have a proper decoding schedule. The combined effect is improved performance and reduction in the average decoding delay (whence the required computing power). A memory (storage) management mechanism is included as a critical part of the decoder so as to provide additional design tradeoff between performance and memory size. It is shown that the latter has a modular-like effect in that additional memory units render enhanced performance due not only to less forced early terminations but to possible increases of the interleaving depth. Depending on the decoding schedule, the degree of parallelism and other decoding resources available, the proposed scheme admits a variety of decoder architectures that meet a large range of throughput and performance demands.

Abstract:The postulate of universal Weyl conformal symmetry for all elementary physical fields introduces nonclassical gravitational effects in both conformal gravitation(CG) and the conformal Higgs model (CHM). The resulting theory is found to explain major observed phenomena including excessive galactic rotation velocities and accelerating Hubble expansion, without invoking dark matter (DM). The recent history of this development is surveyed here. Implications of the theory include galactic baryonic Tully-Fisher relations and dark galactic haloes of definite large radius. Cosmological CHM parameters exclude a massive Higgs boson but are consistent with a novel alternative particle of the observed mass.

Abstract:It is known that some cosmological perturbations are conformal invariant. This facilitates the studies of perturbations within some gravitational theories alternative to general relativity, for example the scalar-tensor theory, because it is possible to do equivalent analysis in a certain frame in which the perturbation equations are simpler. In this paper we revisit the problem of conformal invariances of cosmological perturbations in terms of the covariant approach in which the perturbation variables have clear geometric and physical meanings. We show that with this approach the conformal invariant perturbations are easily identified.

Abstract:We formulate scalar field theories coupled non-conformally to gravity in a manifestly frame-independent fashion. Physical quantities such as the $S$ matrix should be invariant under field redefinitions, and hence can be represented by the geometry of the target space. This elegant geometric formulation, however, is obscured when considering the coupling to gravity because of the redundancy associated with the Weyl transformation. The well-known example is the Higgs inflation, where the target space of the Higgs fields is flat in the Jordan frame but is curved in the Einstein frame. Furthermore, one can even show that any geometry of O$(N)$ nonlinear $\sigma$ models can be flattened by an appropriate Weyl transformation. In this Letter, we extend the notion of the target space by including the conformal mode of the metric, and show that the extended geometry provides a compact formulation that is manifestly Weyl-transformation/field-redefinition invariant. We identify the cutoff scale with the inverse of square root of the extended target space curvature and confirm that it coincides with that obtained from two-to-two scattering amplitudes based on our formalism.

Abstract:The loop quantization of the conformal Brans-Dicke cosmology is explored in the spatially flat and Bianchi-I setting. The scalar and conformal constraints governing the canonical model are quantized using the loop techniques. The physical Hilbert space of quantum spacetimes satisfying both quantum constraints is then obtained by incorporating the quantum geometric features. The Schrödinger cosmic evolutions are derived with the relational Heisenberg observables describing the dynamical degrees of freedom with respect to the chosen reference degrees of freedom, with the latter providing the physical coordinates for the spatial hypersurfaces and the conformal scales. We show that the emerging Schrödinger theories contain not only the loop quantum cosmology of GR, but also that of the so-called shape dynamics. The exact dictionary between the two theories is achieved via the underlying physical Hilbert space possessing the additional (loop-corrected) conformal symmetry.

Abstract:Based on the observation that the dimension of the tangent space is not necessarily equal to the dimension of the corresponding curved manifold and on the known fact that gravitational theories can be formulated in a gauge theoretic way, we discuss how to describe all known interactions in a unified manner. This is achieved by enlarging the tangent group of the four-dimensional manifold to $SO(2,16)$, which permits the inclusion of both gauge groups, the one that describes gravity as a gauge theory as well as the $SO(10)$ describing the internal interactions. Moreover it permits the use of both Weyl and Majorana conditions imposed on the fermions, as to avoid the duplication of fermion multiplets of $SO(10)$ appearing in previous attempts. The gravity theory discussed in the present work is the Conformal Gravity which, after a spontaneous symmetry breaking, can lead either to Weyl Gravity or to the usual Einstein Gravity.

Poincare Invariance in Discrete Gravity

Abstract:A formulation of discrete gravity was recently proposed based on defining a lattice and a shift operator connecting the cells. Spinors on such a space will have rotational SO(d) invariance which is taken as the fundamental symmetry. Inspired by lattice QCD, discrete analogues of curvature and torsion were defined that go smoothly to the corresponding tensors in the continuous limit. In this paper, we show that the absence of diffeomorphism invariance could be replaced by requiring translational invariance in the tangent space by enlarging the tangent space from SO(d) to the inhomogeneous Lorentz group ISO(d) to include translations. We obtain the ISO(d) symmetry by taking instead the Lie group SO(d + 1) and perform on it Inonu-Wigner contraction. We show that, just as for continuous spaces, the zero torsion constraint converts the translational parameter to a diffeomorphism parameter, thus explaining the effectiveness of this formulation.

Abstract:In recent years there has been a lot of interest in discussing frame dependences/independences of the cosmological perturbations under the conformal transformations. This problem has previously been investigated in terms of the covariant approach for a single component universe, and it was found that the covariant approach is very powerful to pick out the perturbative variables which are both gauge and conformal invariant. In this work, we extend the covariant approach to a universe with multicomponent fluids. We find that similar results can be derived, as expected. In addition, some other interesting perturbations are also identified to be conformal invariant, such as entropy perturbation between two different components.

Abstract:Abstract The geometrical formulation of gravity is not unique and can be set up in a variety of spacetimes. Even though the gravitational sector enjoys this freedom of different geometrical interpretations, consistent matter couplings have to be assured for a steady foundation of gravity. In generalised geometries, further ambiguities arise in the matter couplings unless the minimal coupling principle (MCP) is adopted that is compatible with the principles of relativity, universality and inertia. In this work, MCP is applied to all standard model gauge fields and matter fields in a completely general (linear) affine geometry. This is also discussed from an effective field theory perspective. It is found that the presence of torsion generically leads to theoretical problems. However, symmetric teleparallelism, wherein the affine geometry is integrable and torsion-free, is consistent with MCP. The generalised Bianchi identity is derived and shown to determine the dynamics of the connection in a unified fashion. Also, the parallel transport with respect to a teleparallel connection is shown to be free of second clock effects.

Abstract:We study conformal transformations in the most general parity-preserving models of the New General Relativity type. Then we apply them to analysis of cosmological perturbations in the (simplest) spatially flat cosmologies. Strong coupling issues around Minkowski spacetime are seen for many special cases of these models. At the same time, the behaviour of the most general three-parameter case seems to be very robust, presumably always with only the eight first-class constraints coming from diffeomorphisms. Also the case of the so-called 1-parameter New GR doesn't show any discontinuity between Minkowski and the cosmology, though without showing any deviations from GR which would be observable at this level either.

Every Poincaré gauge theory is conformal: a compelling case for dynamical vector torsion

Abstract:The Poincaré gauge theory (PGT) of gravity provides a viable formulation of general relativity (Einstein-Cartan theory), and a popular model-building framework for modified gravity with torsion. Notoriously, however, the PGT terms which propagate vector torsion lead to strongly-coupled ghosts: the modern view is that only scalar torsion can propagate. To fix this, we revisit the concept of embedding explicit mass scales in scale-invariant theories, showing how the Klein-Gordon theory naturally leads to a slowly-rolling inflaton. We then show that the unique scale-invariant embedding of PGT leads to two new terms, one of which is the Maxwell term for vector torsion. We provide the full spectrum of quantum particles in the resulting theory. Our result means that every PGT is conformal and - after a two-decade hiatus - vector torsion is back on the menu.
