Abstract:The COMPASS experiment is a fixed-target high-energy physics experiment that has been collecting data for 20 years (2002 to 2022) at the M2 beamline (SPS, North Area) at CERN. One of the goals of the experiment's broad physics program was to perform semi-inclusive measurements of target-spin dependent asymmetries in (di-)hadron production in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) with high-energy muons scattering off polarized nucleons. The latest COMPASS semi-inclusive DIS measurements were performed in 2022 using a transversely polarized $^6$LiD target and a 160 GeV/$c$ muon beam. The first results from approximately two-thirds of the new data exhibit total uncertainties that are up to a factor of three smaller than those observed in previous deuteron measurements. These results serve to balance the existing data collected with transversely polarized proton targets, which is of particular importance in constraining the $d$-quark transversity and Sivers functions.

Abstract:We analyse the diffractive $Q \bar Q$ production and final jet kinematics in polarized deep-inelastic lp scattering at $\sqrt{s}=20 GeV$. We show that this reaction can be used in the new spectrometer of the COMPASS Collaboration at CERN to study the quark-pomeron coupling structure.

Abstract:The COMPASS experiment at CERN is one of the leading experiments studying the nucleon spin structure. Until 2012 the Parton Distribution Functions and the Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Distribution Functions (TMDs) were extensively studied at COMPASS using Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering measurements. In 2015, the Drell-Yan measurements with a negative pion beam interacting with a transversely polarized ammonia target have started and will be continued through 2018. The goal is to access the TMDs of both pions and protons without any prior knowledge about fragmentation functions. Since the Drell-Yan data cover the same kinematic region of the semi-inclusive data, COMPASS has the unique opportunity to test the sign change of the Sivers TMD as predicted by QCD. In this talk the first measurement of spin dependent azimuthal asymmetries in the pion induced Drell-Yan process will be presented. These asymmetries, which are related to the convolution of pion and nucleon TMDs, are extracted from pairs of oppositely charged muons with invariant masses between 4.3 GeV$c^{2}$ and 8.5 GeVc$^{2}$

Polarized Drell-Yan at COMPASS-II: Transverse Spin Physics Program

Abstract:Successful realization of polarized Drell-Yan physics program is one of the main goals of the second stage of the COMPASS experiment. Drell-Yan measurements with high energy (190 GeV/c) pion beam and transversely polarized NH3 target have been initiated by a pilot-run in the October 2014 and will be followed by 140 days of data taking in 2015. In the past twelve years COMPASS experiment performed series of SIDIS measurements with high energy muon beam and transversely polarized deuteron and proton targets. Results obtained for Sivers effect and other target transverse spin dependent and unpolarized azimuthal asymmetries in SIDIS serve as an important input for general understanding of spin-structure of the nucleon and are being used in numerous theoretical and phenomenological studies being carried out in the field of transvers-spin physics. Measurement of the Sivers and all other azimuthal effects in polarized Drell-Yan at COMPASS will reveal another side of the spin-puzzle providing a link between SIDIS and Drell-Yan branches. This will be a unique possibility to test universality and key-features of transverse momentum dependent distribution functions (TMD PDFs) using essentially same experimental setup and exploring same kinematic domain. In this review man physics aspects of future COMPASS polarized Drell-Yan measurement of azimuthal transverse spin asymmetries will be presented, giving a particular emphasis on the link with very recent COMPASS results obtained for SIDIS transverse spin asymmetries from four "Drell-Yan" $Q^2$-ranges.

Spin Echo and Geometric Phase of a Central Spin Coupled to a Compass Spin-Chain

Abstract:We investigate the Loschmidt echo of a quantum system where a central spin is symmetrically coupled to a compass spin-chain. It is found that the Loschmidt echo and its statistical distribution are able to detect the quantum criticality of the compass spin-chain at low temperature. By applying a spin flip operation to reverse the central spin's orientation, we find the controlled spin echo and its statistical distribution can effectively reveal quantum criticality at very high temperature. Moreover, we show that the geometric phase of a central spin can be used to indicate the quantum phase transition of a compass spin-chain and obeys scaling behavior in the vicinity of a quantum phase transition.
Azimuthal spin asymmetries in pion-polarized proton induced Drell-Yan process at COMPASS using holographic light-front QCD

Abstract:We compute all the leading-twist azimuthal spin asymmetries in the pion-proton induced Drell-Yan process. These spin asymmetries arise from convolutions of the leading-twist transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions (TMDs) of both the incoming pion and the target proton. We employ the holographic light-front pion wave functions for the pion TMDs, while for the proton TMDs, we utilize a light-front quark-diquark model constructed by the soft-wall AdS/QCD. The gluon rescattering is crucial to predict nonzero time-reversal odd TMDs. We study the utility of a nonperturbative SU$(3)$ gluon rescattering kernel, which extends beyond the typical assumption of perturbative U$(1)$ gluons. Subsequently, we employ Collins-Soper scale evolution at Next-to-Leading Logarithmic precision for the TMDs evolution. Our predictions for the spin asymmetries are consistent with the available experimental data from COMPASS and other phenomenological studies.

Abstract:The COMPASS experiment at the CERN SPS is dedicated to hadron physics with a broad research programme, including the study of the nucleon spin structure using muons as a probe and a variety of issues in meson spectroscopy using hadron beams. The two stage fixed target spectrometer with electromagnetic (em) and hadronic calorimetry in both stages provides photon detection in a wide angular range. As discussed in this paper, the COMPASS em calorimetry plays a crucial rôle for the Hadron programme started in 2008 as well as for the planned COMPASS future programme of measuring GPDs via exclusive DVCS photons. We present the photon detection coverage foreseen, and first, preliminary results characterising the present performances of both existing COMPASS electromagnetic calorimeters, based on test beam data taken at CERN T9 facility end of 2007.

Abstract:We investigate quark to [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] longitudinal spin transfers in the light-cone SU(6) quark sepctator-diquark model and try to analyze the possible origins for the spin transfer difference between them measured by the COMPASS collaboration. The intermediate heavier hyperon decay processes are considered, while the final hadron transverse momentum is also included. We find that after taking into account the asymmetric nucleon [Formula: see text] distribution effect, the results we get are qualitatively comparable with the difference of the COMPASS experimental data.

Abstract:COMPASS is a fixed-target experiment at the CERN SPS that studies the spectrum of light-quark hadrons. In 2009, it collected a large dataset using a $190\,$GeV$/c$ positive hadron beam impinging on a liquid-hydrogen target in order to measure the central exclusive production of light scalar mesons. One of the goals is the search for so-called glueballs, which are hypothetical meson-like objects without valence-quark content. We study the decay of neutral resonances by selecting centrally produced pion pairs from the COMPASS dataset. The angular distributions of the two pseudoscalar mesons are decomposed in terms of partial waves, where particular attention is paid to the inherent mathematical ambiguities. The large dataset allows us to perform a detailed analysis in bins of the two squared four-momentum transfers carried by the exchange particles in the reaction. Possible parameterisations of the mass dependence of the partial-wave amplitudes in terms of resonances are also discussed.

Measurement of azimuthal modulations in SIDIS off proton target at COMPASS

Abstract:The azimuthal angle ($\phi_h$) distribution of hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering serves as a powerful tool for probing the nucleon structure in terms of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions. For an unpolarized nucleon, three azimuthal modulations arise: $\cos\phi_h$ related to the Cahn effect, $\cos2\phi_h$ linked to the Boer--Mulders function, and $\sin\phi_h$ known as beam-spin asymmetry, each revealing insights into combinations of twist-two or higher-twist distribution and fragmentation functions. The COMPASS collaboration at CERN collected semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering events in 2016 and 2017 using a longitudinally polarized 160 GeV/$c$ muon beam scattering off a liquid hydrogen target. Data from 2016 corresponding to about 1/3 of the full sample have been analyzed to measure the azimuthal modulations of charged hadrons. For the first time, the results were corrected for QED radiative effects using the DJANGOH MC generator.

Abstract:CERN COMPASS can investigate pion-photon interactions, to achieve a unique Primakoff Coulomb physics program, centered on pion polarizability and hybrid meson structure studies. COMPASS uses 100-280 GeV beams (muon, pion) and a virtual photon target, and magnetic spectrometers and calorimeters to measure the complete kinematics of pion-photon reactions. The COMPASS experiment is scheduled to begin data runs in 2001. Pion polarizabilities and hybrid mesons can be studied via the Primakoff reactions pion + gamma ---> pion + gamma and pion + gamma ---> Hybrid. The electric (alpha) and magnetic (beta) pion and Kaon polarizabilities characterize their deformation in an electromagnetic field, as occurs during gamma-pion Compton scattering. They depend on the rigidity of their internal structures as composite particles, and are therefore important quantities to test the validity of theoretical models. The polarizability measurement will provide an important new test of QCD chiral dynamics. The studies of quark-antiquark-gluon hybrid mesons would improve our understanding of these exotic mesons. COMPASS may improve previous Primakoff polarizability and Hybrid studies by two to three orders of magnitude. Appendixes A (Pion and Kaon Polarizabilities at COMPASS) and B (Hybrid Meson Structure at COMPASS) of this contribution include evaluations submitted to the APS DNP Town Meeting White Paper Committee. These summarize (1) the fundamental scientific issues addressed, (2) major achievements since the last DNP long range plan, (3) the short and long term U.S. outlook, (4) comparison of U.S. and global effort, (5) other issues.
Measurement of longitudinal-target-polarization dependent azimuthal asymmetries in SIDIS at COMPASS experiment

Abstract:Preliminary results obtained by the COMPASS experiment for longitudinal-spin-dependent azimuthal asymmetries in single-hadron muoproduction off protons are presented for the first time. The analysis was carried out on the full data sample collected by COMPASS with longitudinally polarized proton ($NH_3$) target in 2007 and 2011 using 160~\gvc and 200~\gvc muon beams, correspondingly. Within QCD parton model approach extracted asymmetries are giving access to the specific convolutions of certain transverse-momentum-dependent \textit{twist-2} and \textit{higher twist} parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions. In order to access different features of the involved distributions, the asymmetries are extracted as functions of different kinematic variables for both positive and negative single-hadron productions. The significant amount of collected data and wide kinematic range give unique importance to the results. Obtained asymmetries are compared with previous measurements performed by HERMES experiment and with available model predictions.

Abstract:The Spin Physics Detector (SPD) at the Nuclotron based Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) is a multi-purpose experiment designed to study nucleon spin structure in the three dimensions. With capabilities to collide polarized protons and deuterons with center of mass energy up to 27 GeV and luminosity up to $10^{32} \rm cm^{-2} \ s^{-1}$ for protons (an order of magnitude less for deuterons), the experiment will allow measurements of cross-sections and spin asymmetries of hadronic processes sensitive to the unpolarized and various polarized (helicity, Sivers, Boer-Mulders) gluon distributions inside the nucleons. Results from the SPD will be complementary to the present high energy spin experiments at the RHIC facility or future experiments like the EIC (at BNL) and AFTER (at LHC). SPD will provide data in moderate and large Bjorken-x for much improved global analyses of spin structures of the basic building blocks of Nature. With polarized deuteron collisions, SPD will be the unique laboratory for probing tensor polarized gluon distributions. In addition, there are also possibilities of colliding other light nuclei like Carbon at reduced collision energy and luminosity at the first stage of the experiment.

Abstract:Despite decades of research, we still lack a detailed quantitative understanding of the way quantum chromodynamics (QCD) generates the spectrum of hadrons. Precise experimental studies of the hadron excitation spectrum and the dynamics of hadrons help to improve models and to test effective theories and lattice QCD simulations. In addition, QCD seems to allow hadrons beyond the three-quark and quark-antiquark configurations of the constituent-quark model. These so-called exotic hadrons contain additional constituent (anti)quarks or excited gluonic fields that contribute to the quantum numbers of the hadron. The COMPASS experiment at CERN is studying the excitation spectrum of light mesons composed of up, down, and strange quarks. The excited mesons are produced via the strong interaction by scattering a 190 GeV/c pion beam off proton or nuclear targets. On heavy nuclear targets, in addition the electromagnetic interaction contributes in the form of quasi-real photon exchange at very low four-momentum transfer squared. COMPASS has performed the most comprehensive analyses to date of isovector resonances decaying into multi-particle final states. In this review, we give a general introduction into scattering theory and the employed partial-wave analysis techniques. We also describe novel methods developed for the high-precision COMPASS data. The COMPASS results are summarized and compared to previous measurements. In addition, we discuss possible signals for exotic mesons and conclude that COMPASS data provide solid evidence for the existence of the manifestly exotic $\pi_1(1600)$, which has quantum numbers forbidden for a quark-model state, and of the $a_1(1420)$, which does not fit into the quark-model spectrum. By isolating the contributions from quasi-real photon exchange, COMPASS has measured the radiative widths of the $a_2(1320)$ and, for the first time, that of the $\pi_2(1670)$.

Pion Polarizabilities at CERN COMPASS

Abstract:The electric alpha and magnetic beta pion Compton polarizabilities characterize the pion's deformation in the electromagnetic field of the gamma during gamma-pi Compton scattering. The chi_PT effective Lagrangian, using data from radiative pion beta decay, predicts the pion electric and magnetic polarizabilities alpha = -beta = 2.7 +- 0.4. The polarizabilities deduced by Antipov et al. in their low statistics Primakoff experiment (~ 7000 events) were about three times larger than this prediction. For pion polarizability, gamma-pi scattering will be measured in CERN COMPASS via radiative pion Primakoff scattering (pion Bremsstrahlung) in the nuclear Coulomb field: pi + Z --> pi' + gamma + Z; equivalent to gamma + pi --> gamma + pi Compton scattering for laboratory gamma's of order 1 GeV incident on a target pi at rest. The pion polarizabilities are determined by their effect on the shape of the measured gamma-pi Compton scattering angular distribution. One can expect from COMPASS a total measurement uncertainty for alpha, of order 0.4. New high precision pion polarizability measurements via radiative pion scattering data from COMPASS will provide important new tests of the QCD chiral dynamics polarizability prediction.
Single Spin Asymmetry in Πp Drell–Yan Process

Abstract:We study the single spin asymmetries for the πp↑→μ+μ−X process. We consider the asymmetries contributed by the coupling of the Boer–Mulders function with the transversity distribution and the pretzelosity distribution, characterized by the sin(ϕ+ϕS) and sin(3ϕ−ϕS) azimuthal angular dependence, respectively. We estimate the magnitude of these asymmetries at COMPASS by using proper weighting functions. We find that the sin(ϕ+ϕS) asymmetry is of the size of a few percent and can be measured through the experiment. The sin(3ϕ−ϕS) asymmetry is smaller than the sin(ϕ+ϕS) asymmetry. After a cut on qT, we succeed in enhancing the asymmetry.
Impact of recent COMPASS data on polarized parton distributions and structure functions

Abstract:We perform a new extraction of polarized parton distribution functions (PPDFs) from the spin structure function experimental data in the fixed-flavor number scheme (FFNS). In this analysis, we include recent proton and deuteron spin structure functions obtained by the \texttt{COMPASS} collaboration. We examine the impact of the \texttt{new COMPASS} proton and deuteron data on the polarized parton densities and compare with results from our previous study (KATAO PPDFs), which used the Jacobi polynomial approach. We find the extracted PPDFs of the proton, neutron, and deuteron structure functions are in very good agreement with the experimental data. The results for extracted PPDFs are also compared with available theoretical models from the literature.

Abstract:We report on a measurement of Spin Density Matrix Elements (SDMEs) in hard exclusive $\rho ^0$ meson muoproduction at COMPASS using 160~GeV/$c$ polarised $ \mu ^{+}$ and $ \mu ^{-}$ beams impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. The measurement covers the kinematic range 5.0~GeV/$c^2$ $< W <$ 17.0~GeV/$c^2$, 1.0 (GeV/$c$)$^2$ $< Q^2 <$ 10.0 (GeV/$c$)$^2$ and 0.01 (GeV/$c$)$^2$ $< p_{\rm{T}}^2 <$ 0.5 (GeV/$c$)$^2$. Here, $W$ denotes the mass of the final hadronic system, $Q^2$ the virtuality of the exchanged photon, and $p_{\rm{T}}$ the transverse momentum of the $\rho ^0$ meson with respect to the virtual-photon direction. The measured non-zero SDMEs for the transitions of transversely polarised virtual photons to longitudinally polarised vector mesons ($\gamma^*_T \to V^{ }_L$) indicate a violation of $s$-channel helicity conservation. Additionally, we observe a dominant contribution of natural-parity-exchange transitions and a very small contribution of unnatural-parity-exchange transitions, which is compatible with zero within experimental uncertainties. The results provide important input for modelling Generalised Parton Distributions (GPDs). In particular, they may allow one to evaluate in a model-dependent way the role of parton helicity-flip GPDs in exclusive $\rho ^0$ production.

For pion polarizability, gamma-pi scattering will be measured in CERN COMPASS via radiative pion Primakoff scattering (pion Bremsstrahlung) in the nuclear Coulomb field: pi + Z --> pi' + gamma + Z; equivalent to gamma + pi --> gamma + pi Compton scattering for laboratory gamma's of order 1 GeV incident on a target pion at rest. The pion polarizabilities are determined by their effect on the shape of the measured gamma-pi Compton scattering angular distribution. One can expect from COMPASS a total measurement uncertainty for alpha of order 0.4 for the pion polarizability. COMPASS can also carry out a first measurement of Kaon ploarizabilities. New high precision pion and Kaon polarizability measurements via radiative pion and Kaon scattering data from COMPASS will provide important new tests of the QCD chiral dynamics polarizability prediction.
