Abstract:We present VLA and ALMA imaging of the deeply-embedded protostellar cluster NGC6334I from 5 cm to 1.3 mm at angular resolutions as fine as 0.17 (220 AU). The dominant hot core MM1 is resolved into seven components at 1.3 mm, clustered within a radius of 1000 AU. Four of the components have brightness temperatures >200 K, radii ~300 AU, minimum luminosities ~10000 Lsun, and must be centrally heated. We term this new phenomenon a "hot multi-core". Two of these objects also exhibit compact free-free emission at longer wavelengths, consistent with a hypercompact HII region (MM1B) and a jet (MM1D). The spatial kinematics of the water maser emission centered on MM1D are consistent with it being the origin of the high-velocity bipolar molecular outflow seen in CO. The close proximity of MM1B and MM1D (440~AU) suggests a proto-binary or a transient bound system. Several components of MM1 exhibit steep millimeter SEDs indicative of either unusual dust spectral properties or time variability. In addition to resolving MM1 and the other hot core (MM2) into multiple components, we detect five new millimeter and two new centimeter sources. Water masers are detected for the first time toward MM4A, confirming its membership in the protocluster. With a 1.3 mm brightness temperature of 97 K coupled with a lack of thermal molecular line emission, MM4A appears to be a highly optically-thick 240 Lsun dust core, possibly tracing a transient stage of massive protostellar evolution. The nature of the strongest water maser source CM2 remains unclear due to its combination of non-thermal radio continuum and lack of dust emission.

Abstract:A mass model of the rich cluster A2218 is presented based on optical and new near-infrared images of arc(let)s and the ROSAT/HRI X-ray map. A lensing model is proposed with two dark matter clumps, centered on the two bright galaxies around which the various arcs are observed. Two of them, close to the most massive clump around the brightest galaxy, are required to be fold images, given their position angle with respect to the major axis. A third image for each of the two arcs is then predicted to be on the opposite side of the major axis. Both images are indeed found at the expected positions, with consistent magnitudes, colors and shapes. One of the arcs has a known redshift of $0.7$, and the model predicts that the other arc should be at higher redshift, $z \approx 3$. Photometric data in UBrzJK' indicates that a redshift close to 3 is indeed probable for this arc. The dark matter halo is found to be sharply peaked on the giant central galaxy. The ROSAT/HRI X-ray map shows a strongly clumped image, poorly correlated with the cD light and the mass model on scales below $\sim$ 200$h_{50}^{-1}$kpc, but similar to the distribution of galaxies and the mass model when smoothed on this scale. The large degree of central substructure implied helps to account for the discrepancy previously found (in the two massive clusters A2218 \& A1689) between the mass derived from the gravitational lenses and that derived from the X-ray profile and temperature distributions, in a model of hydrostatic equilibrium. Most of the discrepancy can probably be explained by bulk motions and acceleration of the gas, and projection effects enhancing the lensing power of the cluster.

El Gordo needs El Anzuelo: Probing the structure of cluster members with multi-band extended arcs in JWST data

Abstract:Gravitational lensing by galaxy clusters involves hundreds of galaxies over a large redshift range and increases the likelihood of rare phenomena (supernovae, microlensing, dark substructures, etc.). Characterizing the mass and light distributions of foreground and background objects often requires a combination of high-resolution data and advanced modeling techniques. We present the detailed analysis of El Anzuelo, a prominent quintuply imaged dusty star-forming galaxy (ɀ s = 2.29), mainly lensed by three members of the massive galaxy cluster ACT-CL J0102–4915, also known as El Gordo (ɀ d = 0.87). We leverage JWST/NIRCam images, which contain lensing features that were unseen in previous HST images, using a Bayesian, multi-wavelength, differentiable and GPU-accelerated modeling framework that combines H ERCULENS (lens modeling) and NIFT Y (field model and inference) software packages. For one of the deflectors, we complement lensing constraints with stellar kinematics measured from VLT/MUSE data. In our lens model, we explicitly include the mass distribution of the cluster, locally corrected by a constant shear field. We find that the two main deflectors (L1 and L2) have logarithmic mass density slopes steeper than isothermal, with γ L1 = 2.23 ± 0.05 and γ L2 = 2.21 ± 0.04. We argue that such steep density profiles can arise due to tidally truncated mass distributions, which we probe thanks to the cluster lensing boost and the strong asymmetry of the lensing configuration. Moreover, our three-dimensional source model captures most of the surface brightness of the lensed galaxy, revealing a clump with a maximum diameter of 400 parsecs at the source redshift, visible at wavelengths λ rest ≳ 0.6 μm. Finally, we caution on using point-like features within extended arcs to constrain galaxy-scale lens models before securing them with extended arc modeling.

Abstract:We present the detection of a dust continuum source at 3 mm (CARMA) and 1.3 mm (Submillimeter Array, SMA), and 12CO (2–1) emission (SMA) toward the L1451-mm dense core. These detections suggest a compact object and an outflow where no point source at mid-infrared wavelengths is detected using Spitzer. An upper limit for the dense core bolometric luminosity of 0.05 L☉ is obtained. By modeling the broadband spectral energy distribution and the continuum interferometric visibilities simultaneously, we confirm that a central source of heating is needed to explain the observations. This modeling also shows that the data can be well fitted by a dense core with a young stellar object (YSO) and a disk, or by a dense core with a central first hydrostatic core (FHSC). Unfortunately, we are not able to decide between these two models, which produce similar fits. We also detect 12CO (2–1) emission with redshifted and blueshifted emission suggesting the presence of a slow and poorly collimated outflow, in opposition to what is usually found toward YSOs but in agreement with prediction from simulations of an FHSC. This presents the best candidate, so far, for an FHSC, an object that has been identified in simulations of collapsing dense cores. Whatever the true nature of the central object in L1451-mm, this core presents an excellent laboratory to study the earliest phases of low-mass star formation.

Strong-Lensing Analysis of a Complete Sample of 12 MACS Clusters at z>0.5: Mass Models and Einstein Radii

Abstract:We present the results of a strong-lensing analysis of a complete sample of 12 very luminous X-ray clusters at $z>0.5$ using HST/ACS images. Our modelling technique has uncovered some of the largest known critical curves outlined by many accurately-predicted sets of multiple images. The distribution of Einstein radii has a median value of $\simeq28\arcsec$ (for a source redshift of $z_{s}\sim2$), twice as large as other lower-$z$ samples, and extends to $55\arcsec$ for MACS J0717.5+3745, with an impressive enclosed Einstein mass of $7.4\times10^{14} M_{\odot}$. We find that 9 clusters cover a very large area ($>2.5 \sq \arcmin$) of high magnification ($\mu > \times10$) for a source redshift of $z_{s}\sim8$, providing primary targets for accessing the first stars and galaxies. We compare our results with theoretical predictions of the standard $\Lambda$CDM model which we show systematically fall short of our measured Einstein radii by a factor of $\simeq1.4$, after accounting for the effect of lensing projection. Nevertheless, a revised analysis once arc redshifts become available, and similar analyses of larger samples, are needed in order to establish more precisely the level of discrepancy with $\Lambda$CDM predictions.

Abstract:We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) observations of SDSS J1029+2623, a three-image quasar lens system produced by a foreground cluster at z = 0.584. Our strong lensing analysis reveals six additional multiply imaged galaxies in addition to the multiply imaged quasar. We confirm the complex nature of the mass distribution of the lensing cluster, with a bimodal dark matter distribution which deviates from the Chandra X-ray surface brightness distribution. The Einstein radius of the lensing cluster is estimated to be theta(E) = 15.2 +/- 0.5 arcsec for the quasar redshift of z = 2.197. We derive a radial mass distribution from the combination of strong lensing, HST/ACS weak lensing and Subaru/Suprime-cam weak lensing analysis results, finding a best-fitting virial mass of M-vir = 1.55(-0.35)(+0.40) x 10(14) h(-1) M-circle dot and a concentration parameter of c(vir) = 25.7(-7.5)(+14.1). The lensing mass estimate at the outer radius is smaller than the X-ray mass estimate by a factor of similar to 2. We ascribe this large mass discrepancy to shock heating of the intracluster gas during a merger, which is also suggested by the complex mass and gas distributions and the high value of the concentration parameter. In the HST image, we also identify a probable galaxy, GX, in the vicinity of the faintest quasar image C. In strong lens models, the inclusion of GX explains the anomalous flux ratios between the quasar images. The morphology of the highly elongated quasar host galaxy is also well reproduced. The best-fitting model suggests large total magnifications of 30 for the quasar and 35 for the quasar host galaxy, and has an AB time delay consistent with the measured value.
BUFFALO Wild Wings: A High Precision Free-Form Lens Model of MACSJ0416 with Constraints on Dark Matter from Substructure and Highly Magnified Arcs

Abstract:We present new free-form and hybrid mass reconstructions of the galaxy cluster lens MACS J0416.1-2403 at $z=0.396$ using the lens inversion method GRALE. The reconstructions use 237 spectroscopically confirmed multiple images from Bergamini et. al. 2023 as the main input. Our primary model reconstructs images to a positional accuracy of 0.191", thus representing one of the most precise reconstructions of this lens to date. Our models find broad agreement with previous reconstructions, and identify two $\sim 10^{11} M_{\odot}$ light-unaffiliated substructures. We focus on two highly magnified arcs: Spock and Mothra. Our model features a unique critical curve structure around the Spock arc with 2 crossings. This structure enables sufficient magnification across this arc to potentially explain the large number of transients as microlensing events of supergiant stars. Additionally, we develop a model of the millilens substructure expected to be magnifying Mothra, which may be a binary pair of supergiants with $\mu \sim 6000$. This model accounts for flexibility in the millilens position while preserving the observed flux and minimizing image position displacements along the Mothra arc. We constrain the millilens mass and core radius to $\lesssim 10^6 M_{\odot}$ and $\lesssim 12$ pc, respectively, which would render it one of the smallest and most compact substructures constrained by lensing. If the millilens is dominated by wave dark matter, the axion mass is constrained to be $< 3.0 \times 10^{-21}$ eV. Further monitoring of this lens with JWST will uncover more transients, permitting tighter constraints on the structure surrounding these two arcs.

Discovery of a Ringlike Dark Matter Structure in the Core of the Galaxy Cluster Cl 0024+17

Abstract:We present a comprehensive mass reconstruction of the rich galaxy cluster Cl 0024+17 at z~0.4 from ACS data, unifying both strong- and weak-lensing constraints. The weak-lensing signal from a dense distribution of background galaxies (~120 per square arcmin) across the cluster enables the derivation of a high-resolution parameter-free mass map. The strongly-lensed objects tightly constrain the mass structure of the cluster inner region on an absolute scale, breaking the mass-sheet degeneracy. The mass reconstruction of Cl 0024+17 obtained in such a way is remarkable. It reveals a ringlike dark matter substructure at r~75" surrounding a soft, dense core at r~50". We interpret this peculiar sub-structure as the result of a high-speed line-of-sight collision of two massive clusters 1-2 Gyr ago. Such an event is also indicated by the cluster velocity distribution. Our numerical simulation with purely collisionless particles demonstrates that such density ripples can arise by radially expanding, decelerating particles that originally comprised the pre-collision cores. Cl 0024+17 can be likened to the bullet cluster 1E0657-56, but viewed $along$ the collision axis at a much later epoch. In addition, we show that the long-standing mass discrepancy for Cl 0024+17 between X-ray and lensing can be resolved by treating the cluster X-ray emission as coming from a superposition of two X-ray systems. The cluster's unusual X-ray surface brightness profile that requires a two isothermal sphere description supports this hypothesis.

Abstract:Abell 1689 is a well studied cluster of galaxies and one of the largest gravitational lens systems ever observed. We have obtained a reconstruction of the cluster Abell 1689 using Grale, a free-form lens inversion method that relies exclusively on the multiple image data. Non-inclusion of any data related to cluster member galaxies ensures an unbiased measure of the mass distribution, which is the most notable feature of free-form methods like Grale. We used two different sets of multiple image systems from the available strong lensing data - one containing only the secure systems (107 images), and the other containing all available systems, only excluding some very non-secure systems (151 images). For the very well-constrained central $\sim$100 kpc region of the cluster we made detailed comparison of the Grale reconstructed lensing mass and stellar mass retrieved by the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting software FAST++. We found a light-unaccompanied mass peak in this region, whose existence, while tentative, is favored by the distribution of nearby images that are local maxima in the Fermat potential. However, further tests, using different methodologies are needed to confirm the reality of this feature. If it shown to be real, this light-unaccompanied mass peak is consistent with dark matter self-interaction cross-section $\sigma \lesssim 1$cm$^2$/g, while being in tension with larger cross-sections.

Gravitational lens modelling has been used to measure the imprints of dark substructures on lensed arcs, testing the small-scale predictions of ΛCDM. However, the methods required for these tests are subject to degeneracies among the lens mass model and the source light profile. We present a case study of the unique compound gravitational lens SDSSJ0946+1006, wherein a dark, massive substructure has been detected, whose reported high concentration would be unlikely in a ΛCDM universe. For the first time, we model the first two background sources in both I- and U-band HST imaging, as well as VLT-MUSE emission line data for the most distant source. We recover a lensing perturber at a 5.9σ confidence level with mass $\log _{10}(M_\mathrm{sub}/{\rm M}_{\odot })=9.2^{+0.4}_{-0.1}$ and concentration $\log _{10}c=2.4^{+0.5}_{-0.3}$. The concentration is more consistent with CDM subhaloes than previously reported, and the mass is compatible with that of a dwarf satellite galaxy whose flux is undetectable in the data at the location of the perturber. A wandering black hole with mass $\log _{10}(M_\mathrm{BH}/{\rm M}_{\odot })=8.9^{+0.2}_{-0.1}$ is a viable alternative model. We systematically investigate alternative assumptions about the complexity of the mass distribution and source reconstruction; in all cases the subhalo is detected at around the ≥5σ level. However, the detection significance can be altered substantially (up to 11.3σ) by alternative choices for the source regularization scheme.

A Strongly Lensed Dusty Starburst of an Intrinsic Disk Morphology at Photometric Redshift of $z_{\rm ph}>7$

Abstract:We present COSBO-7, a strong millimeter (mm) source known for more than sixteen years but was just revealed its near-to-mid-IR counterpart by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The precise pin-pointing by the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) on the exquisite NIRCam and MIRI images show that it is a background source gravitationally lensed by a single foreground galaxy, and the analysis of its spectral energy distribution by different tools is in favor of photometric redshift at $z_{\rm ph}>7$. Strikingly, our lens modeling based on the JWST data shows that it has a regular, disk morphology in the source plane. The dusty region giving rise to the far-IR-to-mm emission seems to be confined to a limited region to one side of the disk and has a high dust temperature of $>90$~K. The galaxy is experiencing starburst both within and outside of this dusty region. After taking the lensing magnification of $\mu\approx 2.5-3.6$ into account, the intrinsic star formation rate is several hundred $M_\odot$~yr$^{-1}$ both within the dusty region and across the more extended stellar disk, and the latter already has $>10^{10}M_\odot$ of stars in place. If it is indeed at $z>7$, COSBO-7 presents an extraordinary case that is against the common wisdom about galaxy formation in the early universe; simply put, its existence poses a critical question to be answered: how could a massive disk galaxy come into being so early in the universe and sustain its regular morphology in the middle of an enormous starburst?

Abstract:We present a multi-wavelength study of the gravitational lens COSMOS J095930+023427 (z1 = 0.892), together with the associated galaxy group along the line of sight located at z ∼ 0.7, and the lensed background galaxy. The source redshift is currently unknown, but estimated to be at zs ∼ 2. This analysis is based on publicly available HST, Subaru and Chandra imaging data, as well as VLT spectroscopy. The lensing system is an early-type galaxy showing a strong [OII] emission line, and produces four bright images of the distant background source. It has an Einstein radius of 0.79″, about four times larger than the effective radius. We perform a lensing analysis using both a singular isothermal ellipsoid and a peudo-isothermal elliptical mass distribution for the lensing galaxy, and find that the final results on the total mass, the dark matter (DM) fraction within the Einstein radius and the external shear due to a foreground galaxy group are robust with respect to the choice of the parametric model and the source redshift (yet unknown). We measure the luminous mass from the photometric data, and find the DM fraction within the Einstein radius fDM to be between 0.71 ± 0.13 and 0.79 ± 0.15, depending on the unknown source redshift. Meanwhile, the non-null external shear found in our lensing models supports the presence and structure of a galaxy group at z ∼ 0.7, and an independent measurement of the 0.5−2 keV X-ray luminosity within 20″ around the X-ray centroid provides a group mass of M = (3 − 10) × 1013 M⊙, in good agreement with the previous estimate derived through weak lensing analysis. Finally, by inverting the HST/ACS I814 image with the lensing equation, we obtain the reconstructed image of the magnified source galaxy, which has a scale of about 3.3 kpc at zs = 2 (2.7 kpc at zs = 4) and the typical disturbed disk-like appearance observed in low-mass star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 3. However, deep, spatially resolved spectroscopic data for similar lensed sources are still required to detect the first stage of galaxy evolution, since the available spectrum shows no clear features due to the background source.

Abstract:Over the past few years alone, the lensing community has discovered thousands of strong lens candidates, and spectroscopically confirmed hundreds of them. In this time of abundance, it becomes pragmatic to focus our time and resources on the few extraordinary systems, in order to most efficiently study the universe. In this paper, we present such a system: DESI-090.9854-35.9683, a cluster-scale lens at $z_{\rm l} = 0.49$, with seven observed lensed sources around the core, and additional lensed sources further out in the cluster. From the number and the textbook configuration of the lensed images, a tight constraint on the mass potential of the lens is possible. This would allow for detailed analysis on the dark and luminous matter content within galaxy clusters, as well as a probe into dark energy and high-redshift galaxies. We present our spatially resolved kinematic measurements of this system from the Very Large Telescope Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer, which confirm five of these source galaxies (in ascending order, at $z_{\rm s} = 0.962, 0.962, 1.166, 1.432,$ and $1.432$). With previous Hubble Space Telescope imaging in the F140W and F200LP bands, we also present a simple two power-law profile flux-based lens model that, for a cluster lens, well models the five lensed arc families with redshifts. We determine the mass to be $M(< \theta_{\rm E}) = 4.78\times10^{13} M_{\odot}$ for the primary mass potential. From the model, we extrapolate the redshift of one of the two source galaxies not yet spectroscopically confirmed to be at $z_{\rm s}=4.52^{+1.03}_{-0.71}$.

Galaxy Mass Modelling from Multi-Wavelength JWST Strong Lens Analysis: Dark Matter Substructure, Angular Mass Complexity, or Both?

Abstract:We analyze two galaxy-scale strong gravitational lenses, SPT0418-47 and SPT2147-50, using JWST NIRCam imaging across multiple filters. To account for angular complexity in the lens mass distribution, we introduce multipole perturbations with orders $m=1, 3, 4$. Our results show strong evidence for angular mass complexity in SPT2147, with multipole strengths of 0.3-1.7 $\%$ for $m=3, 4$ and 2.4-9.5 $\%$ for $m=1$, while SPT0418 shows no such preference. We also test lens models that include a dark matter substructure, finding a strong preference for a substructure in SPT2147-50 with a Bayes factor (log-evidence change) of $\sim 60$ when multipoles are not included. Including multipoles reduces the Bayes factor to $\sim 11$, still corresponding to a $5\sigma$ detection of a subhalo with an NFW mass of $\log_{10}(M_{200}/M_{\odot}) = 10.87\substack{+0.53\\ -0.71}$. While SPT2147-50 may represent the fourth detection of a dark matter substructure in a strong lens, further analysis is needed to confirm that the signal is not due to systematics associated with the lens mass model.

Dark Matter in ms1224 from Distortion of Background Galaxies

Abstract:We explore the dark matter distribution in ms1224.7+2007 using the gravitational distortion of the images of faint background galaxies. Projected mass image reconstruction reveals a highly significant concentration coincident with the X-ray and optical location. The concentration is seen repeatably in reconstructions from independent subsamples and the azimuthally averaged tangential shear pattern is also clearly seen in the data. The projected mass within a $2.76'$ radius aperture is $\simeq 3.5 \times 10^{14} h^{-1} M_{\sun}$. This is $\simeq 3$ times larger than that predicted if mass traces light with $M/L = 275 h$ as derived from virial analysis. It is very hard to attribute the discrepancy to a statistical fluctuation, and a further indication of a significant difference between the mass and the light comes from a second mass concentration which is again seen in independent subsamples but which is not seen at all in the cluster light. We find a mass per galaxy visible to $I = 22$ of $\simeq 8 \times 10^{12}h^{-1}M_{\sun}$ which, if representative of the universe, implies a density parameter $\Omega \sim 2$. We find a null detection of any net shear from large-scale structure with a precision of 0.9\% per component. This is much smaller than the possible detection in a recent comparable study, and the precision here is comparable to to the minimum level of rms shear fluctuations implied by observed large-scale structure.

Abstract:We present a combined strong and weak gravitational-lensing analysis of the massive galaxy cluster MACS J1423.8+2404 ($z=0.545$, MACS J1423 hereafter), one of the most dynamically relaxed and massive cool-core clusters discovered in the MAssive Cluster Survey at $z>0.5$. We combine high-resolution imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in the F606W, F814W, and F160W pass-bands with spectroscopic observations taken as part of the KALEIDOSCOPE survey with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer mounted on the Very Large Telescope. Our strong lensing analysis of the mass distribution in the cluster core is constrained by four multiple-image systems (17 individual images) within redshift range $1.779<z<2.840$. Our weak-lensing analysis of the cluster outskirts, confined to the HST field of view, is based on a background galaxy catalogue with a density of 57 gal.arcmin$^{-2}$. We measure a projected mass of M($\textrm{R}<200$ kpc) = (1.6 $\pm$ 0.05) $\times$ 10$^{14}$ M$_{\rm\odot}$ from our strong-lensing model, and a projected mass of M($\textrm{R}<640$ kpc) = (6.6 $\pm$ 0.6) $\times$ 10$^{14}$ M$_{\rm\odot}$ when combining with our the weak-lensing constraints. Our analysis of the cluster mass distribution yields no evidence of substructures, confirming the dynamically relaxed state of MACS J1423. Our work sets the stage for future analysis of MACS J1423 in the upcoming Canadian Near Infrared Imager and Stiltless Spectrograph Unbiased Cluster Survey for the James Webb Space Telescope.

Abstract:We present a weak lensing analysis of one of the most distant massive galaxy cluster known, RDCS 1252.9-2927 at z=1.24, using deep images from the Advanced Camera for Survey (ACS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). By taking advantage of the depth and of the angular resolution of the ACS images, we detect for the first time at z>1 a clear weak lensing signal in both the i (F775W) and z (F850LP) filters. We measure a 5-\sigma signal in the i band and a 3-\sigma signal in the shallower z band image. The two radial mass profiles are found to be in very good agreement with each other, and provide a measurement of the total mass of the cluster inside a 1Mpc radius of M(<1Mpc) = (8.0 +/- 1.3) x 10^14 M_\odot in the current cosmological concordance model h =0.70, \Omega_m=0.3, \Omega_\Lambda=0.7, assuming a redshift distribution of background galaxies as inferred from the Hubble Deep Fields surveys. A weak lensing signal is detected out to the boundary of our field (3' radius, corresponding to 1.5Mpc at the cluster redshift). We detect a small offset between the centroid of the weak lensing mass map and the brightest cluster galaxy, and we discuss the possible origin of this discrepancy. The cumulative weak lensing radial mass profile is found to be in good agreement with the X-ray mass estimate based on Chandr and XMM-Newton observations, at least out to R_500=0.5Mpc.
RXJ0437+00: Constraining Dark Matter with Exotic Gravitational Lenses

Abstract:We present the first strong-gravitational-lensing analysis of the galaxy cluster RXJ0437.1+0043 (RXJ0437; z = 0.285). Newly obtained, deep MUSE observations, Keck/MOSFIRE near-infrared spectroscopy, and Hubble Space Telescope SNAPshot imaging reveal 13 multiply imaged background galaxies, three of them (at z=1.98, 2.97, and 6.02, respectively) in hyperbolic umbilic (H-U) lensing configurations. The H-U images are located only 20 -- 50 kpc from the cluster centre, i.e., at distances well inside the Einstein radius where images from other lens configurations are demagnified and often unobservable. Extremely rare (only one H-U lens was known previously) these systems are able to constrain the inner slope of the mass distribution -- and unlike radial arcs, the presence of H-U configurations is not biased towards shallow cores. The galaxies lensed by RXJ0437 are magnified by factors ranging from 30 to 300 and (in the case of H-U systems) stretched nearly isotropically. Taking advantage of this extreme magnification, we demonstrate how the source galaxies in H-U systems can be used to probe for small-scale ($\sim 10^{9} M_{\odot}$) substructures, providing additional insight into the nature of dark matter.
