Abstract:We present more results from a fully cosmological LCDM simulation of a group of isolated dwarf galaxies that has been shown to reproduce the observed stellar mass and cold gas content, resolved star formation histories, and metallicities of dwarfs in the Local Volume. Here we investigate the energetics and timetable of the cusp-core transformation. As suggested by previous work, supernova-driven gas outflows remove dark matter (DM) cusps and create kpc-size cores in all systems having a stellar mass above 1e6 Msun. The "DM core mass removal efficiency" -- dark mass ejected per unit stellar mass -- ranges today from a few to a dozen, and increases with decreasing host mass. Because dwarfs form the bulk of their stars prior to redshift 1 and the amount of work required for DM heating and core formation scales approximately as Mvir^{5/3}, the unbinding of the DM cusp starts early and the formation of cored profiles is not as energetically onerous as previously claimed. DM particles in the cusp typically migrate to 2-3 core radii after absorbing a few percent of the energy released by supernovae. The present-day slopes of the inner dark matter mass profiles, Gamma=d log M/dlog R=2.5-3, of the simulated "Bashful" and "Doc" dwarfs are similar to those measured in the luminous Fornax and Sculptor dwarf spheroidals. None of the simulated galaxies has a circular velocity profile exceeding 20 km/s in the inner 1 kpc, implying that supernova feedback is key to solve the "too-big-to-fail" problem for Milky Way subhalos.

No cores in dark matter-dominated dwarf galaxies with bursty star formation histories

Abstract:Measurements of the rotation curves of dwarf galaxies are often interpreted as requiring a constant density core at the centre, at odds with the "cuspy" inner profiles predicted by $N$-body simulations of cold dark matter (CDM) haloes. It has been suggested that this conflict could be resolved by fluctuations in the inner gravitational potential caused by the periodic removal of gas following bursts of star formation. Earlier work has suggested that core formation requires a bursty and extended star formation history (SFH). Here we investigate the structure of CDM haloes of dwarf galaxies ($M_{\rm DM} \sim 10^9-5\times10^{10}\,{\rm M}_\odot$) formed in the APOSTLE ('A Project of Simulating the Local Environment') and AURIGA cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. Our simulations have comparable or better resolution than others that make cores ($M_{\rm gas} \sim 10^4\,{\rm M}_\odot$, gravitational softening $\sim 150$ pc). Yet, we do not find evidence of core formation at {\it any} mass or any correlation between the inner slope of the DM density profile and temporal variations in the SFH. APOSTLE and AURIGA dwarfs display a similar diversity in their cumulative SFHs to available data for Local Group dwarfs. Dwarfs in both simulations are DM-dominated on all resolved scales at all times, likely limiting the ability of gas outflows to alter significantly the central density profiles of their haloes. We conclude that recurrent bursts of star formation are not sufficient to cause the formation of cores, and that other conditions must also be met for baryons to be able to modify the central DM cusp.

Abstract:We use the NIHAO (Numerical Investigation of Hundred Astrophysical Objects) cosmological simulations to investigate the effects of baryonic physics on the time evolution of dark matter central density profiles. The sample is made of approximate to 70 independent high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation and covers a wide mass range: 10(10) less than or similar to M-halo/M-circle dot less than or similar to 10(12), i.e. from dwarfs to L-star. We confirm previous results on the dependence of the inner dark matter density slope, alpha, on the ratio between stellar-to-halo mass, M-star/M-halo. We show that this relation holds approximately at all redshifts (with an intrinsic scatter of similar to 0.18 in alpha measured between 1 and 2 per cent of the virial radius). This implies that in practically all haloes the shape of their inner density profile changes quite substantially over cosmic time, as they grow in stellar and total mass. Thus, depending on their final M-star/M-halo ratio, haloes can either form and keep a substantial density core (R-core similar to 1 kpc), or form and then destroy the core and recontract the halo, going back to a cuspy profile, which is even steeper than cold-dark-matter predictions for massive galaxies (10(12) M-circle dot). We show that results from the NIHAO suite are in good agreement with recent observational measurements of a in dwarf galaxies. Overall our results suggest that the notion of a universal density profile for dark matter haloes is no longer valid in the presence of galaxy formation.

Abstract:We use high resolution simulations of isolated dwarf galaxies to study the physics of dark matter cusp-core transformations at the edge of galaxy formation: M200 = 10^7 - 10^9 Msun. We work at a resolution (~4 pc minimum cell size; ~250 Msun per particle) at which the impact from individual supernovae explosions can be resolved, becoming insensitive to even large changes in our numerical 'sub-grid' parameters. We find that our dwarf galaxies give a remarkable match to the stellar light profile; star formation history; metallicity distribution function; and star/gas kinematics of isolated dwarf irregular galaxies. Our key result is that dark matter cores of size comparable to the stellar half mass radius (r_1/2) always form if star formation proceeds for long enough. Cores fully form in less than 4 Gyrs for the M200 = 10^8 Msun and 14 Gyrs for the 10^9 Msun dwarf. We provide a convenient two parameter 'coreNFW' fitting function that captures this dark matter core growth as a function of star formation time and the projected stellar half mass radius. Our results have several implications: (i) we make a strong prediction that if LCDM is correct, then 'pristine' dark matter cusps will be found either in systems that have truncated star formation and/or at radii r > r_1/2; (ii) complete core formation lowers the projected velocity dispersion at r_1/2 by a factor ~2, which is sufficient to fully explain the 'too big to fail problem'; and (iii) cored dwarfs will be much more susceptible to tides, leading to a dramatic scouring of the subhalo mass function inside galaxies and groups.

Can cuspy dark matter dominated halos hold cored stellar mass distributions?

Abstract:According to the current concordance cosmological model, the dark matter (DM) particles are collision-less and produce self-gravitating structures with a central cusp which, generally, is not observed. The observed density tends to a central plateau or core, explained within the cosmological model through the gravitational feedback of baryons on DM. This mechanism becomes inefficient when decreasing the galaxy stellar mass so that in the low-mass regime (Mstar << 10**6 Msun) the energy provided by the baryons is insufficient to modify cusps into cores. Thus, if cores exist in these galaxies they have to reflect departures from the collision-less nature of DM. Measuring the DM mass distribution in these faint galaxies is extremely challenging, however, their stellar mass distribution can be characterized through deep photometry. Here we provide a way of using only the stellar mass distribution to constrain the underlying DM distribution. The so-called Eddington inversion method allows us to discard pairs of stellar distributions and DM potentials requiring (unphysical) negative distribution functions in the phase space. In particular, cored stellar density profiles are incompatible with the Navarro, Frenk, and White (NFW) potential expected from collision-less DM if the velocity distribution is isotropic and the system spherically symmetric. Through a case-by-case analysis, we are able to relax these assumptions to consider anisotropic velocity distributions and systems which do not have exact cores. In general, stellar distributions with radially biased orbits are difficult to reconcile with NFW-like potentials, and cores in the baryon distribution tend to require cores in the DM distribution.

Abstract:We present a simple model for the response of a dissipationless spherical system to an instantaneous mass change at its center, describing the formation of flat cores in dark matter haloes and ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) from feedback-driven outflow episodes in a specific mass range. This model generalizes an earlier simplified analysis of an isolated shell into a system with continuous density, velocity and potential profiles. The response is divided into an instantaneous change of potential at constant velocities due to a given mass loss or gain, followed by energy-conserving relaxation to a new Jeans equilibrium. The halo profile is modeled by a two-parameter function with a variable inner slope and an analytic potential profile (Dekel et al. 2017), which enables determining the associated kinetic energy at equilibrium. The model is tested against NIHAO cosmological zoom-in simulations, where it successfully predicts the evolution of the inner dark-matter profile between successive snapshots in about 75% of the cases, failing mainly in merger situations. This model provides a simple understanding of the formation of dark-matter halo cores and UDGs by supernova-driven outflows, and a useful analytic tool for studying such processes.

Cores form through supernova-driven gas removal from halo centres, which alters the central gravitational potential, inducing dark matter to migrate to larger radii. This happens if a galaxy undergoes sustained star formation at high redshift, which results in stars (which, unlike the gas, cannot be removed by baryonic feedback) dominating the central gravitational potential. After cosmic star formation peaks, the number of cores, and the mass of the halos they are formed in, remain constant, indicating that cores are being routinely formed over cosmic time after a threshold halo mass is reached. The existence of cores is, therefore, not in tension with the standard paradigm.

Abstract:We use similar to 100 cosmological galaxy formation 'zoom-in' simulations using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics code GASOLINE to study the effect of baryonic processes on the mass profiles of cold dark matter haloes. The haloes in our study range from dwarf (M-200 similar to 10(10) M-circle dot) to Milky Way (M-200 similar to 10(12) M-circle dot) masses. Our simulations exhibit a wide range of halo responses, primarily varying with mass, from expansion to contraction, with up to factor similar to 10 changes in the enclosed dark matter mass at 1 per cent of the virial radius. Confirming previous studies, the halo response is correlated with the integrated efficiency of star formation: epsilon(SF) = (M-star/M-200)/(Omega(b)/Omega(m)). In addition, we report a new correlation with the compactness of the stellar system: epsilon(R) = r(1/2)/R-200. We provide an analytic formula depending on epsilon(SF) and epsilon(R) for the response of cold dark matter haloes to baryonic processes. An observationally testable prediction is that, at fixed mass, larger galaxies experience more halo expansion, while the smaller galaxies more halo contraction. This diversity of dark halo response is captured by a toy model consisting of cycles of adiabatic inflow (causing contraction) and impulsive gas outflow (causing expansion). For net outflow, or equal inflow and outflow fractions, f, the overall effect is expansion, with more expansion with larger f. For net inflow, contraction occurs for small f (large radii), while expansion occurs for large f (small radii), recovering the phenomenology seen in our simulations. These regularities in the galaxy formation process provide a step towards a fully predictive model for the structure of cold dark matter haloes.

Abstract:Recent discoveries of large halos of stars and dark matter around some of the lowest mass galaxies defy expectations that dwarf galaxies should be small and dense. Here we find large halos are a general feature of the well known dwarfs orbiting the Milky Way and also for the isolated dwarfs in the Local Group. Furthermore, these halos are seen to surround a dense core within each dwarf, with a clear density transition visible between the core and the halo at a radius of ≃1.0 kpc . This common core-halo structure is hard to understand for standard heavy particle dark matter where featureless, concentrated profiles are predicted, whereas dark matter as a Bose-Einstein condensate, ψDM , naturally accounts for the observed profiles, predicting a dense soliton core in every galaxy surrounded by a tenuous halo of interfering waves. We show that the stellar profiles are accurately fitted by the core-halo structure of ψDM , with only one fixed parameter, the boson mass. We also find independent consistency with the stellar velocity dispersions measured in these dwarf galaxies, which peak at the core radius and fall in the halo, at a level consistent with a boson mass of ≃1.5×10−22 eV , based on independent dynamical work. Hence, dark matter comprised of light bosons, such as the axions generic in string theory, provides a compelling solution for the structure of dwarf galaxies with stars that simply trace the dark matter profile of a Bose-Einstein condensate. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.110.043534 © 2024 American Physical Society

Dwarf Galaxies with Central Cores in Modified Newtonian Dynamics Gravity

Abstract:Some dwarf galaxies are within the Mondian regime at all radii, i.e., the gravitational acceleration provided by the observed baryons is always below the threshold of g † ≃ 1.2 × 10 −10 m s −2 . These dwarf galaxies often show cores, in the sense that, assuming Newton's gravity to explain their rotation curves, the total density profile ρ(r) presents a central plateau or core ( d log ρ / d log r → 0 when r → 0). Here we show that under modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) gravity, the existence of this core implies a baryon content whose density ρ bar must decrease toward the center of the gravitational potential (ρ bar → 0 when r → 0). Such a drop of baryons toward the central region is neither observed nor appears in numerical simulations of galaxy formation following MOND gravity. We analyze the problem posed for MOND as well as possible work-arounds.

Abstract:Dark matter-dominated cores have long been claimed for the well-studied local group dwarf galaxies. More recently, extended stellar halos have been uncovered around several of these dwarfs through deeper imaging and spectroscopy. Such core-halo structures are not a feature of conventional cold dark matter (CDM), based on collisionless particles where smooth, scale-free profiles are predicted. In contrast, smooth and prominent dark matter cores are predicted for Warm and Fuzzy/Wave Dark Matter (WDM/$\psi$DM) respectively. The question arises to what extent the visible stellar profiles should reflect this dark matter core structure. Here we compare cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of CDM, WDM $\&$ $\psi$DM, aiming to predict the stellar profiles for these three DM scenarios. We show that cores surrounded by extended halos are distinguishable for WDM and $\psi$DM, with the most prominent cores in the case of $\psi$DM, where the stellar density is enhanced in the core due to the presence of the relatively dense soliton. Our analysis demonstrates that such behavior does not appear in CDM, implying that the small-scale cut-off in the power spectrum present for WDM and $\psi$DM provides a core-halo transition. Consequently, we estimate the mass of the $\psi$DM particle at this core-halo transition point. Furthermore, we observe the anticipated asymmetry for $\psi$DM due to the soliton's random walk, a distinctive characteristic not found in the symmetric distributions of stars in Warm and CDM models.

Abstract:We combine techniques from quantum and from classical density functional theory (DFT) to describe electron-ion mixtures. For homogeneous systems, we show how to calculate ion-ion and ion-electron correlation functions within Chihara's quantum hypernetted chain approximation, which we derive within a DFT formulation. We also sketch out how to apply the DFT formulation to inhomogeneous electron-ion mixtures, and use this to study the electron distribution at the liquid-solid interface of Al.

Abstract:We use the Numerical Investigation of a Hundred Astrophysical Objects (NIHAO) galaxy formation simulations to make predictions for the baryonic budget in present day galaxies ranging from dwarf (M-200 similar to 10(10)M circle dot) toMilkyWay (M-200 similar to 10(12)M circle dot) masses. The sample is made of 88 independent high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations. NIHAO galaxies reproduce key properties of observed galaxies, such as the stellar mass versus halo mass and cold gas versus stellar mass relations. Thus they make plausible predictions for the baryon budget. We present the mass fractions of stars, cold gas (T< 10(4) K), cool gas (10(4) < T< 10(5) K), warm-hot gas (10(5) < T < 5 x 10(6) K) and hot gas (T > 5 x 10(6) K), inside the virial radius, R200. Compared to the predicted baryon mass, using the dark halo mass and the universal baryon fraction, f(b) = Omega(b)/Omega(m) = 0.15, we find that all of our haloes are missing baryons. The missing mass has been relocated past 2 virial radii, and cool gas dominates the corona at low mass (M-200 Alpha less than or similar to 3 x 10(11)M circle dot) while the warm-hot gas dominates at high mass (M-200 less than or similar to 3 x 10(11)M circle dot). Haloes of mass M-200 greater than or similar to 10(10)M circle dot are missing similar to 90 per cent of their baryons. More massive haloes (M-200 similar to 10(12)M circle dot) retain a higher fraction of their baryons, with similar to 30 per cent missing, consistent with recent observational estimates. Moreover, these more massive haloes reproduce the observed fraction of cold, warm-hot and hot gases. The fraction of cool gas we predict (0.11 +/- 0.06) is significantly lower than the observation from COS-Halos (0.3-0.47), but agrees with the alternative analysis of Stern et al. (2016).

Abstract:We investigate a hierarchical structure formation scenario in which galaxy stellar cores are created from the binding energy liberated by shrinking supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries. The binary orbital decay heats the surrounding stars, eroding a preexisting stellar cusp ∝r-2. We follow the merger history of dark matter halos and associated SMBHs via cosmological Monte Carlo realizations of the merger hierarchy from early times to the present in a ΛCDM cosmology. Massive black holes get incorporated through a series of mergers into larger and larger halos, sink to the center through dynamical friction, accrete a fraction of the gas in the merger remnant to become supermassive, and form a binary system. Stellar dynamical processes drive the binary to harden and eventually coalesce. A simple scheme is applied in which the loss cone is constantly refilled and a constant density core forms because of the ejection of stellar mass. We find that a model in which the effect of the hierarchy of SMBH interactions is cumulative and cores are preserved during galaxy mergers produces at the present epoch a correlation between the "mass deficit" (the mass needed to bring a flat inner density profile to a r-2 cusp) and the mass of the nuclear SMBH, with a normalization and slope comparable to the observed relation. Models in which the mass displaced by the SMBH binary is replenished after every major galaxy merger appear instead to underestimate the mass deficit observed in "core" galaxies.

Core and Halo Properties in Multi-Field Wave Dark Matter

Abstract:In this work, we compute multi-field core and halo properties in wave Dark Matter models. We focus on the case where Dark Matter consists of two light (real) scalars, interacting gravitationally. As in the single-field Ultra Light Dark Matter (ULDM) case, the scalar field behaves as a coherent BEC with a definite ground state (at fixed total mass), often referred to in the literature as a gravitational soliton. We establish an efficient algorithm to find the ground and excited states of such two-field systems. We then use simulations to investigate the gravitational collapse and virialization, starting from different initial conditions, into solitons and surrounding halo. As in the single-field case, a virialized halo forms with a gravitational soliton (ground state) at the center. We find some evidence for an empirical relation between the soliton mass and energy and those of the host halo. We use this to then find a numerical relation between the properties of the two. Finally, we use this to address the issue of alleviating some of the tensions that single-field ULDM has with observational data, in particular, the issue of how a galaxy's core and radius are related. We find that if galaxies of different masses have similar percentages of the two species, then the core-radius scaling tension is not addressed. However, more general possibilities occur if the relative abundance of species in each halo correlates with the total mass of the galaxy. If this is the case, the model predicts several other phenomenological signatures.

Abstract:During hierarchical clustering, smaller masses generally collapse earlier than larger masses and so are denser on the average. The core of a small mass halo could be dense enough to resist disruption and survive undigested, when it is incorporated into a bigger object. We explore the possibility that a nested sequence of undigested cores in the center of the halo, which have survived the hierarchical, inhomogeneous collapse to form larger and larger objects, determines the halo structure in the inner regions. For a flat universe with $P(k) \propto k^n$, scaling arguments then suggest that the core density profile is, $\rho \propto r^{-\alpha}$ with $\alpha = (9+3n)/(5+n)$. But whether such behaviour obtains depends on detailed dynamics. We first examine the dynamics using a fluid approach to the self-similar collapse solutions for the dark matter phase space density, including the effect of velocity dispersions. We highlight the importance of tangential velocity dispersions to obtain density profiles shallower than $1/r^2$ in the core regions. If tangential velocity dispersions in the core are constrained to be less than the radial dispersion, a cuspy core density profile shallower than 1/r cannot obtain, in self-similar collapse. We then briefly look at the profiles of the outer halos in low density cosmological models where the total halo mass is convergent. Finally, we analyze a suite of dark halo density and velocity dispersion profiles obtained in cosmological N-body simulations of models with n= 0, -1 and -2. We find that the core-density profiles of dark halos, show considerable scatter in their properties, but nevertheless do appear to reflect a memory of the initial power spectrum, with steeper initial spectra producing flatter core profiles. Tidal disruption of fuzzy dark matter subhalo cores

Abstract:We study tidal stripping of fuzzy dark matter (FDM) subhalo cores using simulations of the Schrödinger-Poisson equations and analyze the dynamics of tidal disruption, highlighting the differences with standard cold dark matter. Mass loss outside of the tidal radius forces the core to relax into a less compact configuration, lowering the tidal radius. As the characteristic radius of a solitonic core scales inversely with its mass, tidal stripping results in a runaway effect and rapid tidal disruption of the core once its central density drops below $4.5$ times the average density of the host within the orbital radius. Additionally, we find that the core is deformed into a tidally locked ellipsoid with increasing eccentricities until it is completely disrupted. Using the core mass loss rate, we compute the minimum mass of cores that can survive several orbits for different FDM particle masses and compare it with observed masses of satellite galaxies in the Milky Way.

Challenges in modeling the dark matter halo of NGC 1052-DF2: Cored versus cuspy halo models

Abstract:The discovery of NGC 1052-DF2 and subsequent modeling have shown that NGC 1052-DF2 is deficient in dark matter and is in conflict with the standard stellar-to-halo mass ratio. In this work, we aim to resolve the degeneracy between the dynamical models on the mass estimate of the NGC 1052-DF2. We constructed mass models of NGC 1052-DF2 using an anisotropic distribution function with a radially varying anisotropy parameter and studied the effect of the various model parameters on the dark matter estimates. We used the observed stellar photometry as an input parameter to construct the distribution function and employed a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method to estimate the dark matter model parameters. We find that mass models with a cuspy dark matter halo have comparable $ $ to models with zero dark matter. Moreover, the cuspy dark matter halo fails to consistently account for the observed velocity dispersion in the inner and outer regions of the galaxy. Consequently, we rule out the possibility of a cuspy dark matter halo for describing the mass models of NGC 1052 - DF2. Our study shows that the cored dark matter halo model with a total mass of $ DM /M_ odot )=10.5$ explains the observed kinematics but requires an extraordinarily large scale length (20kpc) and an outer cutoff radius (26kpc). While the cored mass model provides a comparatively better fit, our findings emphasize that the mass models are largely unconstrained by the available kinematic data. Our results suggest that NGC 1052 - DF2 may not only have an ultra-diffuse stellar distribution but that it can, within uncertainties in the available kinematic data, potentially host an ultra-diffuse dark matter distribution compatible with the standard stellar-to-halo mass relation (SHMR) predicted by galaxy formation and evolution models
