Abstract:We present an HI 21cm absorption study of a sample of 26 radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) at $0.25 < z < 0.4$ carried out with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. Our aim was to study the rate of incidence of HI in various classes of radio AGN, the morphology and kinematics of the HI, and the nature of the interaction between the HI and the radio source. Our sample consists of 14 extended sources and 12 compact sources in the radio-power range 10$^{25.7}$W/Hz$~-~10^{26.5}$W/Hz. We detect HI in 5 sources with a detection rate of $\sim$19%, similar to the detection rate at lower redshifts. The rest-frame UV luminosities of most of the sources in the sample, including all the detections, are below the proposed threshold above which the HI is supposed to have been ionised. The optical emission-line spectra show that despite their high radio powers, one-third of the sample, including two detections, are low-ionisation sources. The radio continuum emission from the HI detections is unresolved at kpc scales, but is extended on parsec scales. The detections have complex HI 21cm absorption profiles with FWZI ranging from 60 km/s to 700 km/s and exhibit remarkably high HI column densities in the range 10$^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$ to 10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ for T$_{\rm spin}=$100 K and unit covering factor. A modelling of the HI 21cm absorption profiles suggests that in 2 sources the gas is disturbed, and in 3 cases, including the one with disturbed HI, the majority of the absorption is consistent with arising from an HI disc. Though we detect no fast HI outflows, the optical emission lines in the HI detections show the presence of highly disturbed gas in the nuclear region. Since some of our detections are low-ionisation AGN, this disturbance may be caused by the radio jets. Overall, our findings point towards a continuation of the low-$z$ trends in the incidence of HI in radio AGN up to $z \sim 0.4$.

Incidence of HI 21-cm absorption in strong FeII systems at $0.5<z<1.5$

Abstract:We present the results from our search for HI 21-cm absorption in a sample of 16 strong FeII systems ($W_{\rm r}$(MgII $\lambda2796$) $\ge1.0$ Å and $W_{\rm r}$(FeII $\lambda2600$) or $W_{\rm FeII}$ $\ge1$ Å) at $0.5<z<1.5$ using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and the Green Bank Telescope. We report six new HI 21-cm absorption detections from our sample, which have increased the known number of detections in strong MgII systems at this redshift range by $\sim50$%. Combining our measurements with those in the literature, we find that the detection rate of HI 21-cm absorption increases with $W_{\rm FeII}$, being four times higher in systems with $W_{\rm FeII}$ $\ge1$ Å compared to systems with $W_{\rm FeII}$ $<1$ Å. The $N$(HI) associated with the HI 21-cm absorbers would be $\ge 2 \times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$, assuming a spin temperature of $\sim500$ K (based on HI 21-cm absorption measurements of damped Lyman-$\alpha$ systems at this redshift range) and unit covering factor. We find that HI 21-cm absorption arises on an average in systems with stronger metal absorption. We also find that quasars with HI 21-cm absorption detected towards them have systematically higher $E(B-V)$ values than those which do not. Further, by comparing the velocity widths of HI 21-cm absorption lines detected in absorption- and galaxy-selected samples, we find that they show an increasing trend (significant at $3.8\sigma$) with redshift at $z<3.5$, which could imply that the absorption originates from more massive galaxy haloes at high-$z$. Increasing the number of HI 21-cm absorption detections at these redshifts is important to confirm various trends noted here with higher statistical significance.

Abstract:This review summarizes recent studies of the cold neutral hydrogen gas associated with galaxies probed via the HI 21-cm absorption line. HI 21-cm absorption against background radio-loud quasars is a powerful tool to study the neutral gas distribution and kinematics in foreground galaxies from kilo-parsec to parsec scales. At low redshifts (z<0.4), it has been used to characterize the distribution of high column density neutral gas around galaxies and study the connection of this gas with the galaxy's optical properties. The neutral gas around galaxies has been found to be patchy in distribution, with variations in optical depth observed at both kilo-parsec and parsec scales. At high redshifts (z>0.5), HI 21-cm absorption has been used to study the neutral gas in metal or Lyman-alpha absorption-selected galaxies. It has been found to be closely linked with the metal and dust content of the gas. Trends of various properties like incidence, spin temperature and velocity width of HI 21-cm absorption with redshift have been studied, which imply evolution of cold gas properties in galaxies with cosmic time. Upcoming large blind surveys of HI 21-cm absorption with next generation radio telescopes are expected to determine accurately the redshift evolution of the number density of HI 21-cm absorbers per unit redshift and hence understand what drives the global star formation rate density evolution.

Abstract:We present a search for associated HI 21 cm absorption in a sample of 29 radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at $0.7 < z < 1$, carried out with the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. We detect HI 21 cm absorption against none of our target AGNs, obtaining $3\sigma$ upper limits to the optical depth of $\lesssim$ 1% per 50 km s$^{-1}$ channel. The radio luminosity of our sources is lower than that of most AGNs searched for HI 21 cm absorption at similar redshifts in the literature, and, for all targets except two, the UV luminosity is below the threshold $10^{23}$ W Hz$^{-1}$, above which the HI in the AGN environment has been suggested to be completely ionised. We stacked the HI spectra to obtain a more stringent limit of $\approx 0.17$% per 50 km s$^{-1}$ channel on the average HI 21 cm optical depth of the sample. The sample is dominated by extended radio sources, 24 of which are extended on scales of tens of kiloparsecs. Including similar extended sources at $0.7 < z < 1.0$ from the literature, and comparing with a low-$z$ sample of extended radio sources, we find statistically significant ($\approx 3\sigma$) evidence that the strength of HI 21 cm absorption towards extended radio sources is weaker at $0.7<z<1.0$ than at $z < 0.25$, with a lower detection rate of HI 21 cm absorption at $0.7 < z < 1.0$. Redshift evolution in the physical conditions of HI is the likely cause of the weaker associated HI 21 cm absorption at high redshifts, due to either a low HI column density or a high spin temperature in high-$z$ AGN environments.

Abstract:We have detected the neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) emission line at a cosmologically significant distance (z=0.18) in the rich galaxy cluster Abell 2218 with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. The HI emission originates in a spiral galaxy 2.0 megaparsecs from the cluster core. No other significant detections have been made in the cluster, suggesting that the mechanisms that remove neutral gas from cluster galaxies are efficient. We infer that fewer than three gas-rich galaxies were accreted by Abell 2218 over the past 10^9 years. This low accretion rate is qualitatively consistent with low-density cosmological models in which clusters are largely assembled at z>1.

Abstract:We report a new, rare detection of 21 cm absorption associated with a quasar (only six quasars are known at $1<z 5$ GHz). The simplest explanation would be that no large column ($N$( is present toward the radio core and the optical active galactic nucleus. Based on the joint optical and radio analysis of a heterogeneous sample of 16 quasars median $ = 0.7) and 19 radio galaxies ($z_ median $ = 0.4) with 21 cm absorption detection and matched in 1.4 GHz luminosity 1.4 GHz $), a consistent picture emerges according to which quasars primarily trace the gas in the inner circumnuclear disk and cocoon created by the interaction of the jet with interstellar medium. They (i.e., quasars) exhibit a L$_ GHz null $ correlation and a frequent mismatch of the radio and optical spectral lines. The radio galaxies show no such correlation and likely trace the gas from the cocoon and the galaxy-wide interstellar medium outside the photoionization cone. The analysis presented here demonstrates the potential of radio spectroscopic observations to reveal the origin of the absorbing gas associated with active galactic nuclei that may be missed in optical observations.

Abstract:The neutral atomic gas content of galaxies is usually studied in the HI 21cm emission line of hydrogen. However, at higher redshifts, we need very deep integrations to detect HI emission. The HI absorption does not suffer from this dependence on distance as long as there is a bright enough background radio source. However, resolved HI absorption studies of galaxies are rare. We report one such rare study of resolved HI absorption against the radio galaxy 3C 433 at $z = 0.101$ with the VLA. The resolved kinematics of the absorber, located against the southern lobe of the 3C 433, shows that it has regular kinematics with an HI mass $\lesssim 3.4 \times 10^{8} M_{\odot}$ for T$_{spin} =$ 100K. Our deep optical continuum and H$\alpha$ observations from the Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC) show that the absorber is a faint disc galaxy in the same environment as 3C 433 with a stellar mass $\sim 10^{10} M_{\odot}$ and a star-formation rate of 0.15 $M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}$ or less. For its HI mass, HI column density, stellar mass, and star-formation rate, this galaxy lies well below the main sequence of star-forming galaxies. Its HI mass is lower than the galaxies studied in HI emission at $z \sim 0.1$. Our GTC imaging reveals interesting alignments between H$\alpha$ and radio emission in the HI companion and in the host galaxy of the AGN as well as in the circumgalactic medium in between. This suggests that the shock ionization of gas by the propagating radio source may happen across tens of kpc. Our work supports the potential of studying the HI content in galaxies via absorption in the case of a fortuitous alignment with an extended radio continuum. This allows us to trace galaxies with low HI masses which would otherwise be missed by deep HI emission surveys. In conjunction with the deep all-sky optical surveys, the blind HI surveys with the SKA pathfinders will be able to detect many such systems.

Abstract:Observations of 21-cm radio emission by neutral hydrogen at redshifts z ~ 0.5 to ~ 2.5 are expected to provide a sensitive probe of cosmic dark energy. This is particularly true around the onset of acceleration at z ~ 1, where traditional optical cosmology becomes very difficult because of the infrared opacity of the atmosphere. Hitherto, 21-cm emission has been detected only to z=0.24. More distant galaxies generally are too faint for individual detections but it is possible to measure the aggregate emission from many unresolved galaxies in the 'cosmic web'. Here we report a three dimensional 21-cm intensity field at z=0.53 to 1.12. We then co-add HI emission from the volumes surrounding about ten thousand galaxies (from the DEEP2 optical galaxy redshift survey. We detect the aggregate 21-cm glow at a significance of ~ 4 sigma.

A third HI 21-cm absorption system in the sight-line of MG J0414+0534: A redshift for Object X?

Abstract:We report the detection of a third HI 21-cm absorber in the sight-line towards the z=2.64 quasar MG J0414+0534 (4C +05.19). In addition to the absorption at the host redshift and in the z=0.96 gravitational lens, we find, through a decimetre-wave spectral scan towards this source, strong absorption at z=0.38. We believe this may be associated with "Object X", an additional feature apparent in the field of the lensing galaxy and lensed images, on the basis of its close proximity to the quasar images and the possible detection of the [OIII] doublet in a published optical spectrum. If real, the strength of the [OIII] emission would suggest the presence of an active galactic nucleus, or a gas-rich galaxy undergoing rapid star formation, either of which is consistent with the strong outflows apparent in the 21-cm spectrum. Although this is the strongest intervening 21-cm absorber yet found, simultaneous observations failed to detect any of the 18-cm OH lines at the 21-cm redshift. This suggests that, as for the lensing galaxy, this is not the primary location of the intervening material responsible for the very red colour of MG J0414+0534.

A Search for Intrinsic HI 21 cm and OH 18 cm Absorption Toward Compact Radio Sources

Abstract:We present the results of a large search for intrinsic HI 21 cm and OH 18 cm absorption in 145 compact radio sources in the redshift range 0.02< z <3.8 with the Green Bank Telescope. We re-detect HI 21 cm absorption toward six known absorption systems but detect no new HI or OH absorption in 102 interference-free sources. 79 sources have not previously been observed for HI 21 cm absorption. We recover a mean optical depth limit of $\tau_{3\sigma}<0.023$ for all the non-detections in the survey. Our results do not support the high intrinsic absorption rates found by previous studies in compact radio sources at low redshift. Our results do, however, support the hypothesis proposed by Curran et al. (2008) that high ultraviolet (UV) luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGN) do not show intrinsic HI 21 cm absorption, confirming a threshold of $L_{\rm UV} = 10^{23}$ W Hz$^{-1}$, above which our intrinsic absorption fraction is zero (54 sources). The exact nature of the UV luminosity effect on HI absorption systems remains ambiguous. We additionally find no statistical correlation between the 1.4 GHz radio luminosity or the source size and the 21~cm absorption detection rate. We attribute the lack of intrinsic absorption in our survey to the UV luminosity effect caused by an optical selection bias and a decreased column density sensitivity with increasing redshift due to lower radio continuum flux densities, high radio frequency interference, and higher telescope system temperatures at low frequencies.

HI 21cm imaging of a nearby Damped Lyman-alpha system

Abstract:We present Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) HI 21cm emission images of the z=0.009 damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) absorber towards the QSO HS 1543+5921. The DLA has been earlier identified as a low surface brightness galaxy SBS 1543+593 at an impact parameter of ~ 400 pc to the QSO line of sight. The extremely low redshift of the absorber allows us to make spatially resolved images of the 21cm emission; besides the HI mass, this also enables us to determine the velocity field of the galaxy and, hence, to estimate its dynamical mass. We obtain a total HI mass of ~ 1.4x10^9 Msun, considerably smaller than the value of M*(HI) determined from blind 21cm emission surveys. This continues the trend of low HI mass in all low redshift DLAs for which HI emission observations have been attempted. We also find that the QSO lies behind a region of low local HI column density in the foreground galaxy. This is interesting in view of suggestions that DLA samples are biased against high HI column density systems. The dynamical mass of the galaxy is found to be Mdyn ~ 5x10^9 Msun.

The depletion of star-forming gas by AGN activity in radio sources

Abstract:Cold, neutral interstellar gas, the reservoir for star formation, is traced through the absorption of the 21-centimetre continuum radiation by neutral hydrogen (HI). Although detected in one hundred cases in the host galaxies of distant radio sources, only recently have column densities approaching the maximum value observed in Lyman-alpha absorption systems been found. Here we explore the implications these have for the hypothesis that the detection rate of HI absorption is dominated by photo-ionisation from the active galactic nucleus (AGN). We find, with the addition all of the current searches for HI absorption at z > 0.1, a strong correlation between the HI absorption strength and the ionising photon rate, with the maximum value at which HI is detected remaining close to the theoretical value in which all of the neutral gas would be ionised in a large spiral galaxy (Q = 2.9e56 ionising photons/s). We also rule out other effects (excitation by the radio continuum and changing gas properties) as the dominant cause for the decrease in the detection rate with redshift. Furthermore, from the maximum theoretical column density we find that the five high column density systems have spin temperatures close to those of the Milky Way (T < 300 K), whereas, from our model of a gaseous galactic disk, the HI detection at Q= 2.9e56 per s yields T~10 000 K, consistent with the gas being highly ionised.

On the implausible physical implications of a claimed lensed neutral hydrogen detection at redshift z = 1.3

Abstract:The Square Kilometre Array mid-frequency array will enable high-redshift detections of neutral hydrogen (HI) emission in galaxies, providing important constraints on the evolution of cold gas in galaxies over cosmic time. Strong gravitational lensing will push back the HI emission frontier towards cosmic noon ($z\sim2$), as has been done for all prominent spectral lines in the interstellar medium of galaxies. Chakraborty & Roy (2023, MNRAS, 519, 4074) report a $z=1.3$ HI emission detection towards the well-modelled, galaxy-scale gravitational lens, SDSS J0826+5630. We carry out HI source modelling of the system and find that their claimed HI magnification, $\mu_{\rm HI} = 29 \pm 6$, requires an HI disk radius of $\lesssim 1.5$ kpc, which implies an implausible mean HI surface mass density in excess of $\Sigma_{\rm HI} > 2000$ M$_\odot$ pc$^{-2}$. This is several orders of magnitude above the highest measured peak values $(\Sigma_{\rm HI} \sim 10 \, {\rm M}_\odot\,{\rm pc}^{-2})$, above which HI is converted into molecular hydrogen. Our re-analysis requires this to be the highest HI mass galaxy known (M$_{\rm HI}~\sim 10^{11}$M$_\odot$), as well as strongly lensed, the latter having a typical probability of order 1 in 10$^{3-4}$. We conclude that the claimed detection is spurious.

Abstract:Neutral atomic hydrogen and molecular gas in the host galaxies of radio active galactic nuclei can be traced using H i 21 cm and OH-1667 MHz absorption lines to understand the fueling and feedback processes. We present the results of an H i and OH absorption survey with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope toward 40 radio sources of low–intermediate radio luminosity (∼10 23 –10 26 W Hz −1 at 1.4 GHz), red mid-infrared color (W2[4.6 μm]–W3[12 μm] > 2.5 mag), and redshift up to 0.35. From 13 sources with good data at H i observing frequencies, we report the detection of H i absorption toward eight sources, five of which are new detections, including four in the redshift range 0.25–0.35. Our detection rates are consistent with our previous results, with the dependence on the star formation history of the host galaxies reflected in the mid-infrared Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer W2−W3 colors and the compactness of the radio sources. We find no significant dependence of the detection rates on radio luminosity or redshift. We also find that the H i column densities are anticorrelated with the low-frequency spectral indices ( α 150 MHz 1.4 GHz , S ν ∝ ν −α ). We do not have any detections from 23 sources with good data at OH observing frequencies. However, by stacking the spectra, we estimate the 3σ upper limit of the OH column density to be 2.27 × 10 14 T ex /10 K × 1/f c cm −2 . By stacking the OH spectra for seven associated H i absorbers, we get a 3σ upper limit of 3.47 × 10 14 T ex /10 K × 1/f c cm −2 on the OH column density and 1.78 × 10 −7 on the [OH]/[H i] ratio.

Large-scale excess HI absorption around z ≈ 4 galaxies detected in a background galaxy spectrum in the MUSE eXtremely deep field

Abstract:Abstract Observationally mapping the relation between galaxies and the intergalactic medium (IGM) is of key interest for studies of cosmic reionization. Diffuse hydrogen gas has typically been observed in HI Lyman-α (Lyα) absorption in the spectra of bright background quasars. However, it is important to extend these measurements to background galaxies as quasars become increasingly rare at high redshift and rarely probe closely separated sight-lines. Here we use deep integral field spectroscopy in the MUSE eXtremely Deep Field to demonstrate the measurement of the Lyα transmission at z ≈ 4 in absorption to a background galaxy at z = 4.77. The HI transmission is consistent with independent quasar sight-lines at similar redshifts. Exploiting the high number of spectroscopic redshifts of faint galaxies (500 between z = 4.0 − 4.7 within a radius of 8 arcmin) that are tracers of the density field, we show that Lyα transmission is inversely correlated with galaxy density, i.e. transparent regions in the Lyα forest mark under-dense regions at z ≈ 4. Due to large-scale clustering, galaxies are surrounded by excess HI absorption over the cosmic mean out to 4 cMpc/h70. We also find that redshifts from the peak of the Lyα line are typically offset from the systemic redshift by +170 km s−1. This work extends results from z ≈ 2 − 3 to higher redshifts and demonstrates the power of deep integral field spectroscopy to simultaneously measure the ionization structure of the IGM and the large-scale density field in the early Universe.

Abstract:We investigate the 21 cm absorption lines produced by non-linear structures during the early stage of reionization, i.e. the starless minihalos and the dwarf galaxies. After a detailed modelling of their properties, with particular attention to the coupling physics, we determine their 21 cm absorption line profiles. The infalling gas velocity around minihalos/dwarf galaxies strongly affects the line shape, and with the low spin temperatures outside the virial radii of the systems, gives rise to horn-like line profiles. The optical depth of a dwarf galaxy is reduced for lines of sight penetrating through its HII region, and especially, a large HII region created by a dwarf galaxy with higher stellar mass and/or a top-heavy initial mass function results in an optical depth trough rather than an absorption line. We compute synthetic spectra of 21 cm forest for both high redshift quasars and radio afterglows of gamma ray bursts (GRBs). Even with the planned SKA, radio afterglows of most if not all GRBs would still be too dim to be the background sources for high resolution (1 kHz) observations, but absorption lines can be easily detected towards a high-z quasar. Broadband observation against GRB afterglows can also be used to reveal the evolving 21 cm signal from both minihalos and dwarf galaxies if there was no X-ray background or it was extremely weak, but it becomes difficult if an early X-ray background existed. Hence the 21 cm absorption could be a powerful probe of the presence/intensity of the X-ray background and the thermal history of the early universe.

FAST survey of H I and OH absorption towards extragalactic radio sources

Abstract:Neutral atomic hydrogen and molecular gas in the host galaxies of radio active galactic nuclei (AGN) can be traced using H I 21-cm and OH-1667 MHz absorption lines to understand the fueling and feedback processes. We present the results of an H I and OH absorption survey with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) towards 40 radio sources of low-intermediate radio luminosity ($\sim$10$^{23}$-10$^{26}$ W Hz$^{-1}$ at 1.4 GHz), red mid-infrared color (W2[4.6 $\mu$m]$-$W3[12 $\mu$m] $>$ 2.5 mag) and redshift up to 0.35. From 13 sources with good data at H I observing frequencies, we report the detection of H I absorption towards 8 sources, 5 of which are new detections including 4 in the redshift range 0.25 to 0.35. Our detection rates are consistent with our previous results with dependence on the star-formation history of the host galaxy reflected in the mid-infrared \textit{WISE} W2$-$W3 colors and the compactness of the radio source. We find no significant dependence of detection rates on radio luminosity or redshift. We also find that H I column densities are anti-correlated with the low-frequency spectral indices ($\alpha_{\rm 150 MHz}^{\rm 1.4 GHz}$, $S_{\nu}\propto \nu^{-\alpha}$). We do not have any detection from 23 sources with good data at OH observing frequencies. However, by stacking the spectra we estimate the 3$\sigma$ upper limit of OH column density to be 2.27$\times$10$^{14}$$T_{\rm ex}$/10 K $\times$1/$f_{\rm c}$ cm$^{-2}$. By stacking the OH spectra for 7 associated H I absorbers, we get a 3$\sigma$ upper limit of 3.47$\times$10$^{14}$ $T_{\rm ex}$/10 K $\times$1/$f_{\rm c}$ cm$^{-2}$ on OH column density and 1.78$\times$10$^{-7}$ on [OH]/[H I] ratio.

Abstract:We present cosmological-scale 3-dimensional (3D) neutral hydrogen ({\sc Hi}) tomographic maps at $z=2-3$ over a total of 837 deg$^2$ in two blank fields that are developed with Ly$\alpha$ forest absorptions of 14,736 background Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars at $z$=2.08-3.67. Using the tomographic maps, we investigate the large-scale ($\gtrsim 10$ $h^{-1}$cMpc) average {\sc Hi} radial profiles and two-direction profiles of the line-of-sight (LoS) and transverse (Trans) directions around galaxies and AGN at $z=2-3$ identified by the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy eXperiment (HETDEX) and SDSS surveys, respectively. The peak of the {\sc Hi} radial profile around galaxies is lower than the one around AGN, suggesting that the dark-matter halos of galaxies are less massive on average than those of AGN. The LoS profile of AGN is narrower than the Trans profile, indicating the Kaiser effect. There exist weak absorption outskirts at $\gtrsim 30$ $h^{-1}$cMpc beyond {\sc Hi} structures of galaxies and AGN found in the LoS profiles that can be explained by the {\sc Hi} gas at $\gtrsim 30$ $h^{-1}$cMpc falls toward the source positions. Our findings indicate that the {\sc Hi} radial profile of AGN has transitions from proximity zones ($\lesssim$ a few $h^{-1}$cMpc) to the {\sc Hi} structures ($\sim 1-30$ $h^{-1}$cMpc) and the weak absorption outskirts ($\gtrsim 30$ $h^{-1}$cMpc). Although there is no significant dependence of AGN types (type-1 vs. type-2) on the {\sc Hi} profiles, the peaks of the radial profiles anti-correlate with AGN luminosities, suggesting that AGN's ionization effects are stronger than the gas mass differences.
