Abstract:The nonequilibrium phase transition of two-dimensional fully frustrated Josephson junction arrays driven by external currents is studied in the framework of the short-time dynamic scaling approach. Within the resistively shunted junction dynamics, besides the critical temperature ${T}_{c}$, the static and dynamic critical exponents $2\ensuremath{\beta}∕\ensuremath{\nu}$, $\ensuremath{\nu}$, and $z$ are obtained. The resulting values of ${T}_{c}$ are consistent with previous steady-state simulations and decrease with the increase of currents. It is found that the values of the exponent $\ensuremath{\nu}$ are not sensitive to external currents, while the values of $2\ensuremath{\beta}∕\ensuremath{\nu}$ and $z$ are strongly current dependent.

Abstract:Based on the resistively shunted junction dynamics, we numerically investigate the superconducting phase transitions of two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays exposed to a dilute external field with the magnetic flux density f=1/25. Dynamic scaling analysis of current-voltage characteristics shows that a Kosterlitz–Thouless–Berezinskii (KTB) phase transition occurs at a finite temperature in the absence of disorder. When the disorder is introduced into the bond, the phase transition would be driven into a non-KTB type, where a possible glass transition is suggested. The effects of the bond disorder on the critical temperature and critical exponents are also discussed. The further experimental works to realize well known KTB and glass transitions in Josephson junction arrays are clearly called for.

Abstract:. The dynamical phase transitions in two-dimensional fully frustrated Josephson junction arrays at zero temperature are investigated numerically with the resistively shunted junction model through the fluctuating twist boundary condition. The model is subjected to a driving current with nonzero orthogonal components i x , i y parallel to both axes of the square lattice. We find a roughly lattice size independent phase diagram with three dynamical phases: a pinned vortex lattice phase, a moving vortex lattice phase and a moving plastic phase. The phase diagram shows a direct transition from the pinned vortex to the moving vortex phase and the separation of the pinned vortex and the moving plastic phases. The time-dependent voltages v x and v y are periodic in the moving vortex lattice phase. But they are aperiodic in the moving plastic phase, resulting in non-monotonic characteristics and hysteresis in the current-voltage curves. It is found that the characteristic frequency is twice the time-averaged voltage in the moving vortex phase and around the time-averaged voltage in the plastic flow regime.

Abstract:Based on resistively shunted junction dynamics, we have numerically studied the depinning transition and thermally activated creep motion of vortices in two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays exposed to a weak external field with the filling factor f = 1/25. Whether the bond disorder is introduced into the system or not, a continuous depinning transition is found at zero temperature. By means of scaling analysis of the current-voltage characteristics, a non-Arrhenius creep law is observed at finite temperatures, with the existence of two universality classes depending on the strength of the bond disorder. The effects of the disorder on the critical current and critical exponents are also discussed.

Abstract:We study a Josephson junction ladder in a magnetic field in the absence of charging effects via a transfer matrix formalism. The eigenvalues of the transfer matrix are found numerically, giving a determination of the different phases of the ladder. The spatial periodicity of the ground state exhibits a devil's staircase as a function of the magnetic flux filling factor f. If the transverse Josephson coupling is varied, a continuous superconducting-normal transition in the transverse direction is observed, analogous to the breakdown of the Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser trajectories in dynamical systems.

Abstract:We give a theoretical study of unusual resistive (dynamic) localized states in anisotropic Josephson junction ladders, driven by a DC current at one edge. These states comprise nonlinearly coupled rotating Josephson phases in adjacent cells, and with increasing current they are found to expand into neighboring cells by a sequence of sudden jumps. We argue that the jumps arise from instabilities in the ladder's superconducting part, and our analytic expressions for the peculiar voltage (rotational frequency) ratios and I-V curves are in very good agreement with direct numerical simulations.

Abstract:We report on a theoretical analysis, consisting of both numerical and analytic work, of the stability of synchronization of a ladder array of Josephson junctions under the influence of current induced magnetic fields. Surprisingly, we find that as the ratio of the mutual to self inductance of the cells of the array is increased a region of unstable behavior occurs followed by reentrant stable synchronization. Analytic work tells us that in order to understand fully the cause of the observed instabilities the behavior of the vertical junctions, sometimes ignored in analytic analyses of ladder arrays, must be taken into account.

Abstract:Modern hybrid superconductor-semiconductor Josephson junction arrays are a promising platform for analog quantum simulations. Their controllable and non-sinusoidal energy/phase relation opens the path to implement nontrivial interactions and study the emergence of exotic quantum phase transitions. Here, we propose the analysis of an array of hybrid Josephson junctions defining a 2-leg ladder geometry for the quantum simulation of the tricritical Ising phase transition. This transition provides the paradigmatic example of minimal conformal models beyond Ising criticality and its excitations are intimately related with Fibonacci non-Abelian anyons and topological order in two dimensions. We study this superconducting system and its thermodynamic phases based on bosonization and matrix-product-states techniques. Its effective continuous description in terms of a three-frequency sine-Gordon quantum field theory suggests the presence of the targeted tricritical point and the numerical simulations confirm this picture. Our results indicate which experimental observables can be adopted in realistic devices to probe the physics and the phase transitions of the model. Additionally, our proposal provides a useful one-dimensional building block to design exotic topological order in two-dimensional scalable Josephson junction arrays.

Spectral properties of the ladder-like Josephson junction array

Abstract:In this paper theoretical analysis of the ladder-like multirow array of inductively coupled Josephson junctions is presented. An external dc current is applied at the top to each of the columns of the array and is extracted at the bottom of that column. The density of states of the Josephson plasma waves has a $\delta$-function term due to the flat band and $3N-2$ singularities where $N$ is the number of rows. The spatial distribution of the amplitudes of the plasmon wave is computed analytically for any given value of the wavenumber $q$. It is expressed through the orthogonal polynomials that are similar but not identical to the Chebyshev polynomials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays frustrated by a perpendicular magnetic field are predicted to form a cascade of distinct vortex lattice states. Here, we show that the resistivity tensor provides both structural and dynamical information on the vortex-lattice states and intervening phase transitions, which allows for experimental identification of these symmetry-breaking ground states. We illustrate our general approach by a microscopic theory of the resistivity tensor for a range of magnetic fields exhibiting a rich set of vortex lattices as well as transitions to liquid-crystalline vortex states.

Nonequilibrium Fractional Josephson Effect

Abstract:Josephson tunnel junctions exhibit a supercurrent typically proportional to the sine of the superconducting phase difference $\phi$. In general, a term proportional to $\cos(\phi)$ is also present, alongside microscopic electronic retardation effects. We show that voltage pulses sharply varying in time prompt a significant impact of the $\cos(\phi)$ term. Its interplay with the $\sin(\phi)$ term results in a nonequilibrium fractional Josephson effect (NFJE) $\sim\sin(\phi/2)$ in the presence of bound states close to zero frequency. Our microscopic analysis reveals that the interference of non-equilibrium virtual quasiparticle excitations is responsible for this phenomenon. We also analyse this phenomenon for topological Josephson junctions with Majorana bound states. Remarkably, the NFJE is independent of the ground state fermion parity unlike its equilibrium counterpart.

Abstract:In this study, we explore the Josephson current-phase relation within a planar diffuse tunneling superconducting multilayer junction subjected to a parallel magnetic field. Our investigation involves computing the supercurrent associated with a fixed jump in the phase of the order parameter at each of the two insulating interfaces, allowing us to derive the current-phase relation for the junction. Employing perturbation theory in junction conductance, we determine both the first and second harmonics of the current-phase relation under specific magnetic field conditions. Notably, the presence of a strong spin-orbit interaction in the middle region of the junction introduces an anomalous Josephson effect. The interplay between spin-orbit and Zeeman interactions results in the emergence of an effective vector potential. This specific characteristic induces a phase shift in each harmonic of the current-phase relation without altering the overall shape of the relation. The mechanism for the Josephson diode effect is discussed for disordered junctions of multiband superconductors.

Abstract:We extend the scattering theory of the Josephson effect to include a coupling of the Josephson junction to a gapless electron reservoir in the normal state. By opening up the system with a quasiparticle escape rate $1/\tau$, the supercurrent carried at zero temperature by an Andreev level at energy $\varepsilon_{\rm A}$ is reduced by a factor $(2/\pi)\arctan(2\varepsilon_{\rm A}\tau/\hbar)$ . We make contact with recent work on "non-Hermitian Josephson junctions", by comparing this result to different proposed generalizations of the Josephson effect to non-Hermitian Hamiltonians.

Abstract:Oscillations of Josephson vortex-flow resistance have been studied in narrow (L similar to 2 - 4 lambda(1)(J)) Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta intrinsic Josephson junctions as a function of magnetic field applied parallel to junction edges. Lengths of junctions, fabricated are similar to 1 mu m in order to enhance pinning effects of Josephson vortex lattice to the junction edges and thus to enhance formation of rectangular vortex lattice which would lead an in-phase mode of the junctions as a necessary condition for the THz generator application. The observed Josephson vortex flow resistance showed a periodic oscillation with a period (H,) corresponding to one flux quantum enters per junction, namely, corresponding to the rectangular vortex lattice. Observed strong oscillation was a result of collective behavior of the entry and escape of vortices in a form of rectangular vortex lattice. Peaks in the oscillations were found at the fields. H = nH(p), here n shows an, integer number. Here, Josephson vortex lattice flow speed shows a local maximum. With this magnetic field, outermost vortex rows geometrically match to the edges of junctions. Contrary to this, a minimum of flow speed, namely pinned state of the vortex lattice, was observed at H = (n + 1/2)Hp.

Abstract:We study the magnetic orbital effect of a doped two-leg ladder in the presence of a magnetic field component perpendicular to the ladder plane. Combining both low-energy approach (bosonization) and numerical simulations (density-matrix renormalization group) on the strong coupling limit (t-J model), a rich phase diagram is established as a function of hole doping and magnetic flux. Above a critical flux, the spin gap is destroyed and a Luttinger liquid phase is stabilized. Above a second critical flux, a reentrance of the spin gap at high magnetic flux is found. Interestingly, the phase transitions are associated with a change of sign of the orbital susceptibility. Focusing on the small magnetic field regime, the spin-gapped superconducting phase is robust, but immediately acquires algebraic transverse (i.e., along rungs) current correlations which are commensurate with the 4kF density correlations. In addition, we have computed the zero-field orbital susceptibility for a large range of doping and interaction ratio J∕t: we found strong anomalies at low J∕t only in the vicinity of the commensurate fillings corresponding to δ=1∕4 and 1∕2. Furthermore, the behavior of the orbital susceptibility reveals that the nature of these insulating phases is different: while for δ=1∕4 a 4kF charge density wave is confirmed, the δ=1∕2 phase is shown to be a bond order wave.

Abstract:Using a new cluster Monte Carlo algorithm, we study the phase diagram and critical properties of an interacting pair of resistively shunted Josephson junctions. This system models tunneling between two electrodes through a small superconducting grain, and is described by a double sine-Gordon model. In accordance with theoretical predictions, we observe three different phases and crossover effects arising from an intermediate coupling fixed point. On the superconductor-to-metal phase boundary, the observed critical behavior is within error-bars the same as in a single junction, with identical values of the critical resistance and a correlation function exponent which depends only on the strength of the Josephson coupling. We explain these critical properties on the basis of a renormalization group (RG) calculation. In addition, we propose an alternative new mean-field theory for this transition, which correctly predicts the location of the phase boundary at intermediate Josephson coupling strength.

Quantum dynamics of frustrated Josephson junction arrays embedded in a transmission line: an effective XX spin chain with long-range interaction

Abstract:We study theoretically a variety of collective quantum phases occurring in frustrated saw-tooth chains of Josephson junctions embedded in a dissipationless transmission line. The basic element of a system, i.e., the triangular superconducting cell, contains two $0$- and one $\pi$- Josephson junctions characterized by $E_J$ and $\alpha E_J$ Josephson energies, accordingly. In the frustrated regime the low energy quantum dynamics of a single cell is determined by anticlockwise or clockwise flowing persistent currents (vortex/antivortex). The direct embedding of $\pi$-Josephson junctions in a transmission line allows to establish a short/long-range interaction between (anti)vortices of well separated cells. By making use of the variational approach, we map the superconducting circuit Hamiltonian to an effective $XX$ spin model with an exchange spin-spin interaction decaying with the distance $x$ as $x^{-\beta}$, and the local $\hat \sigma_{x,n}$-terms corresponding to the coherent quantum beats between vortex and antivortex in a single cell. We obtain that in long arrays as $N \gg \ell_0 \simeq \sqrt{C/C_0}$, where $C$ and $C_0$ are capacitances of $0$-Josephson junction and transmission line, accordingly, the amplitude of quantum beats is strongly suppressed. By means of exact numerical diagonalization, we study the interplay between the coherent quantum beats and the exchange spin-spin interaction leading to the appearance of various collective quantum phases such as the paramagnetic ($P$), compressible superfluid ($CS$) and weakly compressible superfluid ($w$-$CS$) states.

Abstract:The physics of Josephson tunnel junctions drastically depends on their geometrical configurations and here we show that also tiny geometrical details play a determinant role. More specifically, we develop the theory of short and long confocal annular Josephson tunnel junctions in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field of arbitrary orientations. The behavior of a circular annular Josephson tunnel junction is then seen to be simply a special case of the above result. For junctions having a normalized perimeter less than one the threshold curves are derived and computed even in the case with trapped Josephson vortices. For longer junctions a numerical analysis is carried out after the derivation of the appropriate motion equation for the Josephson phase. We found that the system is modeled by a modified and perturbed sine-Gordon equation with a space dependent effective Josephson penetration length inversely proportional to the local junction width. Both the fluxon statics and dynamics are deeply affected by the non-uniform annulus width. Static zero-field multiple-fluxon solutions exist even in presence of a large bias current. The tangential velocity of a traveling fluxon is not determined by the balance between the driving and drag forces due to the dissipative losses. Furthermore, the fluxon motion is characterized by a strong radial inward acceleration which causes electromagnetic radiation concentrated at the ellipse equatorial points.

Abstract:We investigate the Josephson effect through a two-level quantum dot with an exchange coupling between two dot electrons. We compute the superconducting phase relationship and construct the phase diagram in the superconducting gap--exchange coupling plane in the regime of the singlet-triplet transition driven by the exchange coupling. In our study two configurations for the dot-lead coupling are considered: one where effectively only one channel couples to the dot, and the other where the two dot orbitals have opposite parities. Perturbative analysis in the weak-coupling limit reveals that the system experiences transitions from 0 to $\pi$ (negative critical current) behavior, depending on the parity of the orbitals and the spin correlation between dot electrons. The strong coupling regime is tackled with the numerical renormalization group method, which first characterizes the Kondo correlations due to the dot-lead coupling and the exchange coupling in the absence of superconductivity. In the presence of superconductivity, many-body correlations such as two-stage Kondo effect compete with the superconductivity and the comparison between the gap and the relevant Kondo temperature scales allows to predict a rich variety of phase diagrams for the ground state of the system and for the Josephson current. Numerical calculations predicts that our system can exhibit Kondo-driven 0-$\pi$-0 or $\pi$-0-$\pi$ double transitions and, more interestingly, that if proper conditions are met a Kondo-assisted $\pi$-junction can arise, which is contrary to a common belief that the Kondo effect opens a resonant level and makes the 0-junction. Our predictions could be probed experimentally for a buckminster fullerene sandwiched between two superconductors.
