Abstract:Radicals from one-electron oxidation of 4-hydroxycinnamate, ferulate and 3,4-dihydroxycinnamate have been formed by reaction with the oxidising triplet state of duroquinone. All three compounds react with triplet duroquinone with second order rate constants close to the diffusion-controlled limit. The identity of the resulting radicals is confirmed by observation of their characteristic visible absorption spectra. Time-resolved resonance Raman (TR3) spectra of the radical from 4-hydroxycinnamate were measured using a probe laser wavelength of 600 nm, to be in resonance with the long wavelength absorption band of the radical. The TR3 spectra contain prominent bands ascribed to the C-O and ring C-C stretching vibrations. The spectra are interpreted as indicating strong delocalisation of the radical site to the double bond in conjugation with the aromatic ring in 4-hydroxycinnamate. This contributes to the low reduction potential of the radical and the antioxidant properties of hydroxycinnamates.
Observational signatures of X-ray irradiated accretion disks

Abstract:Reflection of X-rays from cool material around a black hole is one of the few observational diagnostics of the accretion flow geometry. Models of this reflected spectrum generally assume that the accretion disk can be characterized by material in a single ionization state. However, several authors have recently stressed the importance of the classic ionization instability for X-ray irradiated gas in hydrostatic balance. This instability leads to a discontinuous transition in the vertical structure of the disk, resulting in a hot ionized skin above much cooler material. If the Compton temperature of the skin is high then even iron is completely ionized, and the skin does not produce any spectral features. These new models, where the ionization structure of the disk is calculated self-consistently, require an excessive amount of computing power and so are difficult to use in directly fitting observed X-ray spectra. Instead, we invert the problem by simulating X-ray spectra produced by the new reflection models, and then fit these with the old, single zone reflection models, to assess the extent to which the derived accretion geometry depends on the reflection model used. We find that the single zone ionization models can severely underestimate the covering fraction of the ``cold'' material as seen from the X-ray source if the optical depth in the ionized skin is of order unity, and that this can produce an apparent correlation between the covering fraction and the X-ray spectral index similar in nature to that reported by Zdziarski, Lubinski and Smith (1999).

Abstract:Active galactic nuclei (AGN) light curves observed with different wave bands show that the variability in longer wavelength bands lags the variability in shorter wavelength bands. Measuring these lags, or reverberation mapping, is used to measure the radial temperature profile and extent of AGN disks, typically with a reprocessing model that assumes X-rays are the main driver of the variability in other wavelength bands. To demonstrate how this reprocessing works with realistic accretion disk structures, we use 3D local shearing box multifrequency radiation magnetohydrodynamic simulations to model the UV-emitting region of an AGN disk, which is unstable to the magnetorotational instability and convection. At the same time, we inject hard X-rays (>1 keV) into the simulation box to study the effects of X-ray irradiation on the local properties of the turbulence and the resulting variability of the emitted UV light curve. We find that disk turbulence is sufficient to drive intrinsic variability in emitted UV light curves and that a damped random walk model is a good fit to this UV light curve for timescales >5 days. Meanwhile, X-ray irradiation has negligible impact on the power spectrum of the emitted UV light curve. Furthermore, the injected X-ray and emitted UV light curves are only correlated if there is X-ray variability on timescales >1 day, in which case we find a correlation coefficient r = 0.34. These results suggest that if the opacity for hard X-rays is scattering dominated as in the standard disk model, hard X-rays are not the main driver of reverberation signals.

The structure and radiation spectra of illuminated accretion discs in AGN. I. Moderate illumination

Abstract:We present detailed computations of the vertical structure of an accretion disc illuminated by hard X-ray radiation with the code {\sc titan-noar} suitable for Compton thick media. The energy generated via accretion is dissipated partially in the cold disc as well as in the X-ray source. We study the differences between the case where the X-ray source is in the form of a lamp post above the accretion disc and the case of a heavy corona. We consider radiative heating via Comptonization together with heating via photo-absorption on numerous heavy elements as carbon, oxygen, silicon, iron. The transfer in lines is precisely calculated. A better description of the heating/cooling through the inclusion of line transfer, a correct description of the temperature in the deeper layers, a correct description of the entire disc vertical structure, as well as the study of the possible coronal pressure effect, constitute an improvement in comparison to previous works. We show that exact calculations of hydrostatic equilibrium and determination of the disc thickness has a crucial impact on the optical depth of the hot illuminated zone. We assume a moderate illumination where the viscous flux equals the X-ray radiation flux. A highly ionized skin is created in the lamp post model, with the outgoing spectrum containing many emission lines and ionization edges in emission or absorption in the soft X-ray domain, as well as an iron line at $\sim 7 $ keV consisting of a blend of low ionization line from the deepest layers and hydrogen and helium like resonance line from the upper layers, and almost no absorption edge, contrary to the case of a slab of constant density.A full heavy corona completely suppresses the highly ionized zone on the top of the accretion disc and in such case the spectrum is featureless.

Accretion disk winds in active galactic nuclei: X-ray observations, models, and feedback

Abstract:Powerful winds driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN) are often invoked to play a fundamental role in the evolution of both supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and their host galaxies, quenching star formation and explaining the tight SMBH‐galaxy relations. A strong support of this “quasar mode” feedback came from the recent X‐ray observation of a mildly relativistic accretion disk wind in a ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) and its connection with a large‐scale molecular outflow, providing a direct link between the SMBH and the gas out of which stars form. Spectroscopic observations, especially in the X‐ray band, show that such accretion disk winds may be common in local AGN and quasars. However, their origin and characteristics are still not fully understood. Detailed theoretical models and simulations focused on radiation, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) or a combination of these two processes to investigate the possible acceleration mechanisms and the dynamics of these winds. Some of these models have been directly compared to X‐ray spectra, providing important insights into the wind physics. However, fundamental improvements on these studies will come only from the unprecedented energy resolution and sensitivity of the upcoming X‐ray observatories, namely ASTRO‐H (launch date early 2016) and Athena (2028). Quasi-isotropic UV Emission in the ULX NGC~1313~X--1

Abstract:A major prediction of most super-Eddington accretion theories is the presence of anisotropic emission from supercritical disks, but the degree of anisotropy and its dependency with energy remain poorly constrained observationally. A key breakthrough allowing to test such predictions was the discovery of high-excitation photoionized nebulae around Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). We present efforts to tackle the degree of anisotropy of the UV/EUV emission in super-Eddington accretion flows by studying the emission-line nebula around the archetypical ULX NGC~1313~X--1. We first take advantage of the extensive wealth of optical/near-UV and X-ray data from \textit{Hubble Space Telescope}, \textit{XMM-Newton}, \textit{Swift}-XRT and \textit{NuSTAR} observatories to perform multi-band, state-resolved spectroscopy of the source to constrain the spectral energy distribution (SED) along the line of sight. We then compare spatially-resolved \texttt{Cloudy} predictions using the observed line-of-sight SED with the nebular line ratios to assess whether the nebula `sees' the same SED as observed along the line of sight. We show that to reproduce the line ratios in the surrounding nebula, the photo-ionizing SED must be a factor $\approx 4$ dimmer in ultraviolet emission than along the line-of-sight. Such nearly-iosotropic UV emission may be attributed to the quasi-spherical emission from the wind photosphere. We also discuss the apparent dichotomy in the observational properties of emission-line nebulae around soft and hard ULXs, and suggest only differences in mass-transfer rates can account for the EUV/X-ray spectral differences, as opposed to inclination effects. Finally, our multi-band spectroscopy suggest the optical/near-UV emission is not dominated by the companion star.

Discovery of a Three-Layered Atmospheric Structure in Accretion Disks Around Stellar-Mass Black Holes

Abstract:We have carried out systematic modeling of the X-ray spectra of the Galactic superluminal jet sources GRS 1915+105 and GRO J1655-40, using our newly developed spectral fitting methods. Our results reveal, for the first time, a three-layered structure of the atmosphere in the inner region of the accretion disks. Above the conanonly known, cold and optically thick disk of a blackbody temperature 0.2-0.5 keV, there is a layer of warm gas with a temperature of 1.0-1.5 keV and an optical depth of around 10. Compton scattering of the underlying disk blackbody photons produces the soft X-ray component we comonly observe. Under certain conditions, there is also a much hotter, optically thin corona above the warm layer, characterized by a temperature of 100 keV or higher and an optical depth of unity or less. The corona produces the hard X-ray component typically seen in these sources. We emphasize that the existence of the warm layer seem to be independent of the presence of the hot corona and, therefore, it is not due to irradiation of the disk by hard X-rays from the corona. Our results suggest a striking structural similarity between the accretion disks and the solar atmosphere, which may provide a new stimulus to study the common underlying physical processes operating in these vastly different systems. We also report the first unambiguous detection of an emission line around 6.4 keV in GRO J1655-40, which may allow further constraining of the accretion disk structure. Abstract:The structure of the accretion flow on to supermassive black holes is not well understood. Standard disc models match to zeroth-order in predicting substantial energy dissipation within optically thick material producing a characteristic strong blue/ultraviolet continuum. However, they fail at reproducing more detailed comparisons to the observed spectral shapes along with their observed variability. Based on stellar mass black holes within our Galaxy, accretion discs should undergo a transition into an X-ray hot, radiatively inefficient flow, below a (mass scaled) luminosity of | |⁠ . While this has been seen in limited samples of nearby low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGN) and few rare changing-look AGN, it is not at all clear whether this transition is present in the wider AGN population across cosmic time. A key issue is the difficulty in disentangling a change in spectral state from increased dust obscuration and/or host galaxy contamination, effectively drowning out the AGN emission. Here, we use the new eROSITA eFEDS Survey to identify unobscured AGN from their X-ray emission, matched to excellent optical imaging from Subaru's Hyper Suprime-Cam; allowing the subtraction of the host galaxy contamination. The resulting, uncontaminated, AGN spectra reveal a smooth transition from a strongly disc-dominated state in bright AGN, to the collapse of the disc into an inefficient X-ray plasma in the low-luminosity AGN, with the transition occurring at | |⁠ ; revealing fundamental aspects of accretion physics in AGN.

X-ray spectra of hot accretion flows

Abstract:We study radiative properties of hot accretion flows in a general relativistic model with an exact treatment of global Comptonization, developed in our recent works. We note a strong dependence of electron temperature on the strength of magnetic field and we clarify that the underlying mechanism involves the change of the flow structure, with more strongly magnetised flows approaching the slab geometry more closely. We find that the model with thermal synchrotron radiation being the main source of seed photons agrees with the spectral index vs Eddington ratio relation observed in black hole transients below 1 per cent of the Eddington luminosity, LEdd, and models with a weak direct heating of electrons (small delta) are more consistent with observations. Models with large delta predict slightly too soft spectra, furthermore, they strongly overpredict electron temperatures at ~0.01 LEdd. The low-luminosity spectra, at <0.001 LEdd, deviate from a power-law shape in the soft X-ray range and we note that the first-scattering bump often resembles a thermal like component, with the temperature of a few hundred eV, superimposed on a power-law spectrum. The model with thermal Comptonization of thermal synchrotron radiation does not agree with well studied AGNs observed below ~0.01 LEdd, for which there is a substantial evidence for the lack of an inner cold disc. This indicates that the model of hot flows powering AGNs should be revised, possibly by taking into account an additional (but internal to the flow) source of seed photons.

Radio Scrutiny of the X-Ray-weak Tail of Low-mass Active Galactic Nuclei: A Novel Signature of High-Eddington Accretion?

Abstract:The supermassive black holes (M BH ∼ 10 6 –10 10 M ⊙ ) that power luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs), i.e., quasars, generally show a correlation between thermal disk emission in the ultraviolet (UV) and coronal emission in hard X-rays. In contrast, some "massive" black holes (mBHs; M BH ∼ 10 5 –10 6 M ⊙ ) in low-mass galaxies present curious X-ray properties with coronal radiative output up to 100× weaker than expected. To examine this issue, we present a pilot study incorporating Very Large Array radio observations of a sample of 18 high-accretion-rate (Eddington ratios L bol /L Edd > 0.1), mBH-powered AGNs (M BH ∼ 10 6 M ⊙ ) with Chandra X-ray coverage. Empirical correlations previously revealed in samples of radio-quiet, high-Eddington AGNs indicate that the radio–X-ray luminosity ratio, L R /L X , is approximately constant. Through multiwavelength analysis, we instead find that the X-ray-weaker mBHs in our sample tend toward larger values of L R /L X even though they remain radio-quiet per their optical–UV properties. This trend results in a tentative but highly intriguing correlation between L R /L X and X-ray weakness, which we argue is consistent with a scenario in which X-rays may be preferentially obscured from our line of sight by a "slim" accretion disk. We compare this observation to weak emission-line quasars (AGNs with exceptionally weak broad-line emission and a significant X-ray-weak fraction) and conclude by suggesting that our results may offer a new observational signature for finding high-accretion-rate AGNs.

On the Origin of Ultraviolet Emission and the Accretion Model of Low-luminosity AGNs

Abstract: Low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) are generally believed to be powered by an inner radiatively inefficient, advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF), an outer truncated thin disk, and a jet. Maoz (2007) recently challenged this picture based on the observation that the strength of ultraviolet emission relative to the X-ray and radio bands does not depart from empirical trends defined by more luminous sources. He advocates that AGNs across all luminosities have essentially the same accretion and radiative processes, which in luminous sources are described by a standard optically thick, geometrically thin disk. We calculate ADAF models and demonstrate that they can successfully fit the observed spectral energy distributions of the LLAGNs in Maoz's sample. Our model naturally accommodates the radio and X-ray emission, and the ultraviolet flux is well explained by a combination of the first-order Compton scattering in the ADAF, synchrotron emission in the jet, and black body emission in the truncated thin disk. It is premature to dismiss the ADAF model for LLAGNs. The UV data can be fit equally well using a standard thin disk, but an additional corona and jet would be required to account for the X-ray and radio emission. We argue that there are strong theoretical reasons to prefer the ADAF model over the thin disk scenario. We discuss testable predictions that can potentially discriminate between the two accretion models.
Broadband X-ray/UV/optical time-resolved spectroscopy of NGC 5548: The origin of the UV/optical variability in active galactic nuclei

Abstract:Recently, nearby bright galaxies have been the subject of long monitoring surveys in the X-rays, UV, and optical. All of these campaigns revealed a strong correlation between the various UV and optical bands, with time lags that increase with wavelength. In a series of papers, we have demonstrated that a scenario in which an X-ray source located on the rotation axis of the central black hole illuminating the accretion disc is a viable explanation for the observed correlations. However, some of the monitored sources showed low or moderate correlation between the X-rays and the UV, which could challenge this scenario. In this paper, we analyse the time-averaged and the variable broadband X-ray/UV/optical spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of NGC\,5548, one of the most intensely monitored Seyfert\,1 galaxies, using and ground-based telescopes. The aim of this paper is to test whether the broadband spectral behaviour of the source could be explained with the X-ray illumination hypothesis, despite the apparently moderate correlation between the X-rays and longer wavelength. We modelled the broadband time-averaged SED, from the Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping (STORM) monitoring campaign of the source performed using the KYNSED model, which assumes X-ray illumination of the disc. We also modelled 15 time-resolved SEDs extracted from the same campaign to check whether this model can account for the spectral variability seen in the various wavebands during the monitoring. We assumed in our modelling that the X-ray corona is powered via the accretion process. Our results show that the proposed scenario could describe the time-averaged and the time-resolved SEDs of NGC\,5548 perfectly well. In this scenario, the height of the corona, the X-ray photon index, and the power that is transferred to the corona all vary. This would explain the variability behaviour at the various wavelengths. The best-fit model is obtained for a non-spinning black hole accreting at a constant rate of 5 of its Eddington limit. Since each of the variable parameters will affect the observed flux in a particular way, the combined variability of all of these parameters will then account for the moderate correlation between the X-rays and UV/optical. We demonstrate in this paper that X-ray illumination of the accretion disc can actually explain the observed properties of NGC\,5548. In fact, this model not only fits the broadband spectra of the source well, but it also explains the time-lag behaviour as a function of wavelength as well as the power spectral distribution, providing a complete description of the behaviour of this source.

Unveiling slim accretion disc in AGN through X-ray and Infrared observations

Abstract:In this work, which is a continuation of Castello-Mor et al., we present new X-ray and infrared (IR) data for a sample of active galactic nuclei (AGN) covering a wide range in Eddington ratio over a small luminosity range. In particular, we rigorously explore the dependence of the optical-to-X-ray spectral index alpha(OX) and the IR-to-optical spectral index on the dimensionless accretion rate, M = m/eta, where m = L-AGN/L-Edd and eta is the mass-to-radiation conversion efficiency, in low-and high-accretion rate sources. We find that the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the faster accreting sources is surprisingly similar to those from the comparison sample of sources with lower accretion rate. In particular: (i) The optical-to-UV AGN SED of slow and fast accreting AGN can be fitted with thin accretion disc (AD) models. (ii) The value of alpha(OX) is very similar in slow and fast accreting systems up to a dimensionless accretion rate M-c similar to 10. We only find a correlation between alpha(OX) and M for sources with M > Mc. In such cases, the faster accreting sources appear to have systematically larger aOX values. (iii) We also find that the torus in the faster accreting systems seems to be less efficient in reprocessing the primary AGN radiation having lower IR-to-optical spectral slopes. These findings, failing to recover the predicted differences between the SEDs of slim and thin ADs within the observed spectral window, suggest that additional physical processes or very special geometry act to reduce the extreme-UV radiation in fast accreting AGN. This may be related to photon trapping, strong winds and perhaps other yet unknown physical processes.
Inflow Generated X-ray Corona Around Supermassive Black Holes and Unified Model for X-ray Emission

Abstract:Three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations, covering the spatial domain from hundreds of Schwarzschild radii to $2\ \mathrm{pc}$ around the central supermassive black hole of mass $10^8 M_\odot$, with detailed radiative cooling processes, are performed. Generically found is the existence of a significant amount of shock heated, high temperature ($\geq 10^8\ \mathrm{K}$) coronal gas in the inner ($\leq 10^4 r_\mathrm{sch}$) region. It is shown that the composite bremsstrahlung emission spectrum due to coronal gas of various temperatures are in reasonable agreement with the overall ensemble spectrum of AGNs and hard X-ray background. Taking into account inverse Compton processes, in the context of the simulation-produced coronal gas, our model can readily account for the wide variety of AGN spectral shape, which can now be understood physically. The distinguishing feature of our model is that X-ray coronal gas is, for the first time, an integral part of the inflow gas and its observable characteristics are physically coupled to the concomitant inflow gas. One natural prediction of our model is the anti-correlation between accretion disk luminosity and spectral hardness: as the luminosity of SMBH accretion disk decreases, the hard X-ray luminosity increases relative to the UV/optical luminosity.

Coordinated X-ray and UV absorption within the accretion disk wind of the active galactic nucleus PG 1126-041

Abstract:Accretion disk winds launched close to supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are a viable mechanism to provide feedback between the SMBH and the host galaxy. We aim to characterize the X-ray properties of the inner accretion disk wind of the nearby active galactic nucleus (AGN) PG 1126-041, and to study its connection with the ultraviolet (UV)-absorbing wind. We perform spectroscopic analysis of eight XMM-Newton observations of PG 1126-041 taken between 2004 and 2015, using both phenomenological models and the most advanced accretion disk wind models available. For half of the dataset, we can compare the X-ray analysis results with the results of quasi-simultaneous, high-resolution spectroscopic UV observations taken with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope. The X-ray spectra of PG 1126-041 are complex and absorbed by ionized material which is highly variable on multiple time scales, sometimes as short as 11 days. Accretion disk wind models can account for most of the X-ray spectral complexity of PG 1126-041, with the addition of massive clumps, represented by a partially covering absorber. Variations in column density ($N_H \sim 5-20 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$) of the partially covering absorber drive the observed X-ray spectral variability of PG 1126-041. The absorption from the X-ray partially covering gas and from the blueshifted C IV troughs appear to vary in a coordinated way. The line of sight toward PG 1126-041 offers a privileged view through a highly dynamic nuclear wind originating on inner accretion disk scales, making the source a very promising candidate for future detailed studies of the physics of accretion disk winds around SMBHs.

Abstract:Three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations are performed, which cover the spatial domain from hundreds of Schwarzschild radii to 2 pc around the central supermassive black hole of mass 10 8 M ⊙ ?> , with detailed radiative cooling processes. The existence of a significant amount of shock heated, high temperature ( ≥ 10 8 K ?> ) coronal gas in the inner ( ≤ 10 4 r sch ?> ) region is generally found. It is shown that the composite bremsstrahlung emission spectrum due to coronal gas of various temperatures is in reasonable agreement with the overall ensemble spectrum of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and hard X-ray background. Taking into account inverse Compton processes, in the context of the simulation-produced coronal gas, our model can readily account for the wide variety of AGN spectral shapes, which can now be understood physically. The distinguishing feature of our model is that X-ray coronal gas is, for the first time, an integral part of the inflow gas and its observable characteristics are physically coupled to the concomitant inflow gas. One natural prediction of our model is the anti-correlation between accretion disk luminosity and spectral hardness: as the luminosity of SMBH accretion disk decreases, the hard X-ray luminosity increases relative to the UV/optical luminosity.

Abstract:X-ray obscuration of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is considered in the context of ionized winds of stratified structure launched from accretion disks. We argue that a Compton-thick layer of a large-scale disk wind can obscure continuum X-rays and also lead to broad UV absorption, such as in the blue wing of C iv; the former originates from the inner wind and the latter from the outer wind, as a dual role. Motivated by a number of lines of observational evidence showing strong AGN obscuration phenomena in Seyfert 1 AGNs such as NGC 5548, we demonstrate in this work, by utilizing a physically motivated wind model coupled to post-process radiative transfer calculations, that an extended disk wind under certain physical conditions (e.g., morphology and density) could naturally cause a sufficient obscuration qualitatively consistent with UV/X-ray observations. Predicted UV/X-ray correlation is also presented as a consequence of variable spatial size of the wind in this scenario.
