Abstract:The gonality conjecture, proved by Ein–Lazarsfeld, asserts that the gonality of a nonsingular projective curve of genus g can be detected from its syzygies in the embedding given by a line bundle of sufficiently large degree. An effective result obtained by Rathmann says that any line bundle of degree at least 4g−3 would work in the gonality theorem. In this note, we develop a new method to improve the degree bound to 4g−4 with two exceptional cases.

Abstract:We prove the unbounded denominators conjecture in the theory of noncongruence modular forms for finite index subgroups of SL_2(Z). Our result includes also Mason's generalization of the original conjecture to the setting of vector-valued modular forms, thereby supplying a new path to the congruence property in rational conformal field theory. The proof involves a new arithmetic holonomicity bound of a potential-theoretic flavor, together with Nevanlinna's second main theorem, the congruence subgroup property of SL_2(Z[1/p]), and a close description of the Fuchsian uniformization D(0,1)/\Gamma_N of the Riemann surface C \setminus \mu_N.

Abstract:Radziwill and Soundararajan unveiled a connection between low-lying zeros and central values of $L$-functions, which they instantiated in the case of quadratic twists of an elliptic curve. This paper addresses the case of the family of modular forms in the level aspect, and proves that the logarithms of central values of associated L-functions approximately distribute along a normal law with mean -(1/2)log log c(f) and variance log log c(f), where c(f) is the analytic conductor of f, as predicted by the Keating-Snaith conjecture.

Abstract:Under a stronger genericity condition, we prove the local analogue of ghost conjecture of Bergdall and Pollack. As applications, we deduce in this case (a) a folklore conjecture of Breuil--Buzzard--Emerton on the crystalline slopes of Kisin's crystabelian deformation spaces, (b) Gouvea's $\lfloor\frac{k-1}{p+1}\rfloor$-conjecture on slopes of modular forms, and (c) the finiteness of irreducible components of the eigencurve. In addition, applying combinatorial arguments by Bergdall and Pollack, and by Ren, we deduce as corollaries in the reducible and strongly generic case, (d) Gouvea--Mazur conjecture, (e) a variant of Gouvea's conjecture on slope distributions, and (f) a refined version of Coleman's spectral halo conjecture.

Abstract:Gouvêa and Mazur (Math Comp 58:793-805, 1992) made a conjecture on the local constancy of slopes of modular forms when the weight varies p -adically. Since one may decompose the space of modular forms according to associated residual Galois representations, the Gouvêa–Mazur conjecture makes sense for each such component. We prove the localized Gouvêa–Mazur conjecture when the residual Galois representation is irreducible and its restriction to is reducible and generic.

Effective gonality theorem on weight-one syzygies of algebraic curves

Abstract:In 1986, Green-Lazarsfeld raised the gonality conjecture asserting that the gonality $\operatorname{gon}(C)$ of a smooth projective curve $C$ of genus $g\geq 2$ can be read off from weight-one syzygies of a sufficiently positive line bundle $L$ on $C$, and also proposed possible least degree of such a line bundle. In 2015, Ein-Lazarsfeld proved the conjecture when $\operatorname{deg} L$ is sufficiently large, but the effective part of the conjecture remained widely open and was reformulated explicitly by Farkas-Kemeny. In this paper, we establish an effective vanishing theorem for weight-one syzygies, which implies that the gonality conjecture holds if $\operatorname{deg} L \geq 2g+\operatorname{gon}(C)$ or $\operatorname{deg} L = 2g+\operatorname{gon}(C)-1$ and $C$ is not a plane curve. As Castryck observed that the gonality conjecture may not hold for a plane curve when $\operatorname{deg} L = 2g+\operatorname{gon}(C)-1$, our theorem is the best possible and thus gives a complete answer to the gonality conjecture.

Abstract:Every finite collection of oriented closed geodesics in the modular surface has a canonically associated link in its unit tangent bundle coming from the periodic orbits of the geodesic flow. We study the volume of the associated link complement with respect to its unique complete hyperbolic metric. We provide the first lower volume bound that is linear in terms of the number of distinct exponents in the code words corresponding to the collection of closed geodesics.

Abstract:In this article, we study the density conjecture of Katz and Sarnak for $L$-functions of adélic Hilbert modular forms and their convolutions. In particular, under the generalised Riemann hypothesis, we establish several instances supporting the conjecture and extending the works of Iwaniec-Luo-Sarnak and many others. For applications, we obtain an upper bound for the average order of $L$-functions of Hilbert modular forms at $s=\frac{1}{2}$ as well as a positive proportion of non-vanishing of certain Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions.

Maximal multiplicity of Laplacian eigenvalues in negatively curved surfaces

Abstract:In this work, we obtain the first upper bound on the multiplicity of Laplacian eigenvalues for negatively curved surfaces which is sublinear in the genus g. Our proof relies on a trace argument for the heat kernel, and on the idea of leveraging an r-net in the surface to control this trace. This last idea was introduced in [Jiang-Tidor-Yao-Zhang-Zhao, 2021] for similar spectral purposes in the context of graphs of bounded degree. Our method is robust enough to also yield an upper bound on the ``approximate multiplicity'' of eigenvalues, i.e., the number of eigenvalues in windows of size $1/\log^\beta(g)$, $\beta>0$. This work provides new insights on a conjecture by Colin de Verdi{è}re [Colin de Verdi{è}re, 1986] and new ways to transfer spectral results from graphs to surfaces.

On the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for modular abelian surfaces

Abstract:Let $A$ be a modular abelian surface over $Q$ which either has trivial geometric endomorphism ring, or arises as the restriction of scalars of an elliptic curve over an imaginary quadratic field which is modular and is not a $Q$-curve. In the former case, assume that there exists an odd Dirichlet character $\chi$ such that $L(A,\chi,1)\neq 0$. We prove the following implication: if $L(A, 1) \ne 0$, and the $p$-adic eigenvariety for $GSp_4$ is smooth at the point corresponding to $A$ (and some auxiliary technical hypotheses hold), then $A(Q)$ is finite, as predicted by the Birch--Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, and the $p$-part of the Tate--Shafarevich group is also finite. We also prove one inclusion of the cyclotomic Iwasawa Main Conjecture for $A$. Moreover, we also prove analogous results for cohomological automorphic representations of $GSp_4$, removing many of the restrictive hypotheses in our earlier work [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2003.05960" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2003.05960">2003.05960</a>]; for cohomological representations we do not need to assume smoothness of the eigenvariety, since it is automatic in this case. The main ingredient in the proof is the Euler system attached to the spin representations of genus $2$ Siegel modular forms constructed in our earlier work with Skinner.

Congruence properties of the coefficients of the classical modular polynomials

Abstract:The classical modular polynomials $\Phi_\ell(X,Y)$ give plane curve models for the modular curves $X_0(\ell)/\mathbb{Q}$ and have been extensively studied. In this article, we provide closed formulas for $\ell$ nontrivial coefficients of the classical modular polynomials $\Phi_\ell(X,Y)$ in terms of the Fourier coefficients of the modular invariant function $j(z)$ for a prime $\ell$. Our interest in the formulas were motivated by our conjectures on congruences modulo powers of the primes $2,3$ and $5$ satisfied by the coefficients of these polynomials. We deduce congruences from these formulas supporting the conjectures.

Maximal Brill--Noether loci via the gonality stratification

Abstract:We study the restriction of Brill-Noether loci to the gonality stratification of the moduli space of curves of fixed genus. As an application, we give new proofs that Brill-Noether loci with $\rho=-1$ have distinct support, and for fixed $r$ give lower bounds on when one direction of the non-containments of the Maximal Brill-Noether Loci Conjecture hold for Brill-Noether loci of rank $r$ linear systems. Using these techniques, we also show that Brill-Noether loci corresponding to rank $2$ linear systems are maximal as soon as $g\ge 28$ and prove the Maximal Brill-Noether Loci Conjecture for $g=20$.

Lower bounds on Loewy lengths of modules of finite projective dimension

Abstract:This article is concerned with nonzero modules of finite length and finite projective dimension over a local ring. We show the Loewy length of such a module is larger than the regularity of the ring whenever the ring is strict Cohen-Macaulay, establishing a conjecture of Corso--Huneke--Polini--Ulrich for such rings. In fact, we show the stronger result that the Loewy length of a nonzero module of finite flat dimension is at least the regularity for strict Cohen-Macaulay rings, which significantly strengthens a theorem of Avramov--Buchweitz--Iyengar--Miller. As an application we simultaneously verify a Lech-like conjecture, comparing generalized Loewy length along flat local extensions, and a conjecture of Hanes for strict Cohen-Macaulay rings. Finally, we also give notable improvements to known lower bounds for Loewy lengths without the strict Cohen-Macaulay assumption. The strongest general bounds we achieve are over complete intersection rings.

Abstract:We establish a version of the Pommerenke–Levin–Yoccoz inequality for the modulus of a polynomial-like (PL) restriction of a polynomial and give two applications. First we show that if the modulus of a PL restriction of a polynomial is bounded from below then this restricts the combinatorics of the polynomial. The second application concerns parameter slices of cubic polynomials given by the non-repelling multiplier of a fixed point. Namely, the intersection of the so-called Main Cubioid and the multiplier slice lies in the closure of the principal hyperbolic domain, with possible exception of queer components.

Abstract:In this article, we are interested in modular forms with non-vanishing central critical values and linear independence of Fourier coefficients of modular forms. The main ingredient is a generalization of a theorem due to VanderKam to modular symbols of higher weights. We prove that for sufficiently large primes p , Hecke operators act linearly independently on the winding elements inside the space of weight 2 k cuspidal modular symbol with for . This gives a bound on the number of newforms with non-vanishing arithmetic L -functions at their central critical points and linear independence on the reductions of these modular forms for prime modulo .

Abstract:We prove that the set of `low rank' points on sufficiently large fibre powers of families of curves are not Zariski dense. The recent work of Dimitrov-Gao-Habegger and Kühne (and Yuan) imply the existence of a bound which is exponential in the rank, and the Zilber-Pink conjecture implies a bound which is linear in the rank. Our main result is a (slightly weaker) linear bound for `low ranks'. We also prove analogous results for isotrivial families (with relaxed conditions on the rank) and for solutions to the $S$-unit equation, where the bounds are now sub-exponential in the rank. Our proof involves a notion of the Chabauty-Coleman(-Kim) method in families (or, in some sense, for simply connected varieties). For Zariski non-density, we use the recent work of Blàzquez-Sanz, Casale, Freitag and Nagloo on Ax-Schanuel theorems for foliations on principal bundles.

Tamagawa number conjecture for CM modular forms and Rankin--Selberg convolutions

Abstract:Let $E/F$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $F$ with complex multiplication by the ring of integers of an imaginary quadratic field $K$ such that the torsion points of $E$ generate over $F$ an abelian extension of $K$. In this paper we prove the $p$-part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer formula for $E/F$ in analytic rank $1$ for primes $p>3$ split in $K$. This was previously known for $F=\mathbb{Q}$ by work of Rubin as a consequence of his proof of the Mazur--Swinnerton-Dyer ``main conjecture'' for rational CM elliptic curves, but the problem remained wide open for general $F$. The approach in this paper, based on a novel application of an idea of Bertolini--Darmon--Prasanna to consider a carefully chosen decomposable Rankin--Selberg convolution of two CM modular forms having the Hecke $L$-function of interest as one of the factors, circumvents the use of $p$-adic heights and Bertrand's $p$-adic transcendence results in previous approaches. It also yields a proof of similar results for CM abelian varieties $A/K$, and for CM modular forms of higher weight.

Abstract:Given a compact segment, $\beta$, of a cuspidal geodesic on the modular surface, we study the number of sign changes of cusp forms and Eisenstein series along $\beta$. We prove unconditionally a sharp lower bound for Eisenstein series along a full density set of spectral parameters. Conditioned on certain moment bounds, we extend this to all spectral parameters, and prove similar theorems for cusp forms. The arguments rely in part on the authors' mean square bounds [KKL24], and on removing the assumption of the Lindelöf hypothesis from recent work of Ki [Ki23].
