Abstract:A quantitative comparison of the pore space geometry for three natural sandstones is presented. The comparison is based on local porosity theory which provides a geometric characterization of stochastic microstructures. The characterization focusses on porosity and connectivity fluctuations. Porosity fluctuations are measured using local porosity distributions while connectivity fluctuations are measured using local percolation probabilities. We report the first measurement of local percolation probability functions for experimentally obtained threedimensional pore space reconstructions. Our results suggest to use local porosity distributions and percolation probabilities as a quantitative method to compare microstructures between models and experiment.
Multiscale Modeling and Analysis of Compaction Bands in High-Porosity Sandstones

Abstract:We propose a hierarchical multiscale modeling approach to simulate the hydro-mechanical coupling behavior in saturated high-porosity sandstone, with a particular focus on the occurrence and transition of compaction bands. In this multiscale approach, we use the finite element method (FEM) to solve the global boundary value problem for a sandstone, and the discrete element method (DEM) to solve the local representative volume elements (RVEs) embedded at the Gauss integration points of the FE mesh to provide the effective material constitutive responses required for FEM. The global governing equations for a coupled hydro-mechanical problem are solved with the standard u–p formulation, where the total stress is decomposed into the pore pressure and the effective stress which is directly derivable from the DEM solution of the RVEs, according to the seminal Terzaghi's effective stress principle. By choosing proper RVEs to represent the typical microstructure of high-porosity sandstone, we perform both drained and undrained simulations on saturated sandstone specimens to examine localized compactive failures developed therein. We identify that both mean effective stress and porosity control critically the initiation and development of failure modes in sandstone. Under undrained shear, our simulations show that a sandstone specimen may first develop a compaction band followed by a gradual transition to a shear-enhanced compaction band and even shear band, with the build-up of excessive pore pressure and hence drop of mean effective stress. In the specimen, regions experiencing localized volumetric contraction show relatively higher pore pressure than other regions and act as the source of flux flow. The Darcy flux peaks during the formation of compaction band and decreases gradually in the following stages. To distinguish the different failure stages with distinct physical attributes, the ratio of deviatoric strain to volumetric strain is adopted as a useful indicator signifying the underlying microstructural mechanisms for different deformation bands. This study signifies the importance of considering pore pressure and mean effective stress in fluid-involved engineering operations, e.g. aquifer management, hydrocarbon extraction and CO2 geological sequestration.
The effects of noise and errors in heart size on numerical techniques for the inverse problem of electrocardiography.

Abstract:In this study we examine the effects of both noise and geometrical errors on four numerical methods proposed for solving the inverse problem of electrocardiography. The heart-body system is modeled using an inhomogeneous eccentric sphere model. The cardiac source is modeled as a double layer spherical cap with either an anterior or posterior location. Epicardial potentials determined using the numerical techniques were compared with the analytically determin potentials in the presence of both noise and errors in assumed geometry.

Abstract:This study characterized and modeled heterogeneous surface wettability in sandstone and investigated the role of spatial heterogeneity and correlation length of surface wettability on relative permeability in a supercritical CO2 (scCO(2))-brine-rock system. Understanding the role of wettability heterogeneity on relative permeability is essential to geological CO2 sequestration, oil and gas recovery, and contaminated groundwater remediation. Although numerous studies have attempted to understand the influences of surface wettability, capillary number (Ca), and viscosity ratio, the role of the spatial variation and correlation length of surface wettability on two-phase flow in three-dimensional (3D) porous media has not been unraveled due to the challenges in the measurement and representation of realistic rock surface wettability. In this work, we conducted in-situ measurements of surface contact angle (CA) in a Bentheimer sandstone after CO2 flooding using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), and found that the pore-scale CA distribution on rock surfaces followed a log-normal distribution associated with a spatial correlation length. Based on the statistical information from CT scanning, a Gaussian random field was used to model CA distributions that had desired standard deviations and spatial correlation lengths, which were then adjusted within a certain range of values for sensitivity analyses to study their combined effects on the two-phase flow in the porous medium using the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method. The LB two-phase flow simulation was accelerated using hybrid, multicore parallel computing to overcome the challenges in simulating multiphase flow in a large 3D domain having 800 x 800 x 600 nodes. The simulation results showed that the surface wettability heterogeneity (i.e., standard deviation of CA) had a lesser effect on the relative permeability of the wetting fluid (water) but a more significant impact on the relative permeability of the non-wetting fluid (scCO(2)). The Corey model was used to fit the LB-simulated relative permeability curves of water and scCO(2) and showed that the variations in the relative permeability curves for both water and scCO(2) increased as the standard deviation and spatial correlation length of CA increased. This study illustrated that the assumption of homogeneous surface wettability may cause errors in multiphase flow simulations. The impacts of both the standard deviation and spatial correlation length of CAs should be accounted for. This is the first study that explored the spatial correlation lengths associated with CA distributions on sandstone surfaces and comprehensively investigated the roles of both spatial variation and correlation length of CA on two-phase flow properties in 3D porous media. The optimized LB multiphase flow model was proved a powerful tool to study the interplays and combined effects of these statistical parameters, which had critical applications in numerous natural and engineering processes that involved multiphase flow in porous media.

Abstract:The simultaneous flow of two phases through porous media has long lacked a sound theoretical description, due, in large measure, to the complex geometry and topology of the pore space, and the chaotic, nearly random spatial distribution of the fluids. For some 20 years, a theory of flow through random media, percolation theory, has existed in the field of mathematical physics. In this paper, it is demonstrated that percolation theory describes the distribution of non-wetting fluid in common sandstones and limestones during capillary pressure and relative permeability measurements. In particular, the theory predicts the relative amounts of non-wetting fluid in each of three distinct fluid configurations: isolated, dead-end, and flow effective fluid.Porous media are herein idealized as random mixtures of solid and void to which concepts of percolation theory apply. For sinter-bodies a critical porosity, φc ⋍ 112, exists, below which the void space is not continuous across the sample. For many natural porous materials, e.g. sandstones and limestones, the dependence of residual non-wetting saturation upon porosity is roughly that which corresponds to the existence of a critical porosity, whose value is again 112. The distribution of the non-wetting phase during two phase flow, in particular, the amount of isolated and dead-end fluid, can be qualitatively predicted by simple graph models. The concepts of dead end and isolated fluid must be considered if relative permeability, capillary pressure, and other descriptors of two phase flow are to be understood.

Abstract:In order to further expand the understanding of the pore-throat structure of sandstone, a new method is proposed in this paper to reconstruct three-dimensional (3D) virtual sandstone and replicate the natural sandstone pore-throat structure. While reconstructing 3D virtual sandstone, a particle distribution factor M and a dilation filter D were introduced into the site percolation model. The function of M was to control the initial size of the solid particle while ensuring the randomness of the shape of the solid particle, whereas D gave acceptable deformation of the pore-throat structure while changing the porosity ( P ) of the 3D virtual sandstone. It was found that the virtual sandstone with high similarity to the real sandstone could be reconstructed by changing the combination of M and D regardless of the P , tortuosity, and pore coordination number of the real sandstone. The percolation thresholds of 3D virtual sandstone generated under different M and D were obtained, and the pore connectivity and permeability changes with M , D , and P were also investigated. The proposed method for virtual sandstone generation in this paper provides a novel approach for assessing and predicting the connectivity and permeability of sandstone reservoirs in oil and gas exploration.

A Low-Power , High-Bandwidth LDO Voltage Regulator with No External Capacitor

Abstract:A low-dropout (LDO) voltage regulator for low-power applications is designed without an external capacitor for compensation. The regulator has two stages, the first a folded cascode amplifier and the second a large pass transistor acting as a common-source amplifier. To better explore the tradeoff between bandwidth and power supply rejection, transistor dimensions are modified to support three different bias current levels for the same topology. Tradeoffs involving phase margin and load capacitance are also explored. In simulation, the regulator provided an output of 1.3 V from an unregulated 1.8 V supply, using a 0.75 V reference. By exploiting the tradeoffs between PSRR, bandwidth, and power consumption, a PSRR between 40-60 dB is achieved with a bandwidth between 10 kHz-350 kHz while burning no more than 150 µA of current. The output voltage is stable for load currents between 18-174 mA.
Rescaling Relations between Two- and Three-dimensional Local Porosity Distributions for Natural and Artificial Porous Media

Abstract:Local porosity distributions for a three-dimensional porous medium and local porosity distributions for a two-dimensional plane-section through the medium are generally different. However, for homogeneous and isotropic media having finite correlation-lengths, a good degree of correspondence between the two sets of local porosity distributions can be obtained by rescaling lengths, and the mapping associating corresponding distributions can be found from two-dimensional observations alone. The agreement between associated distributions is good as long as the linear extent of the measurement cells involved is somewhat larger than the correlation length, and it improves as the linear extent increases. A simple application of the central limit theorem shows that there must be a correspondence in the limit of very large measurement cells, because the distributions from both sets approach normal distributions. A normal distribution has two independent parameters: the mean and the variance. If the sample is large enough, LPDs from both sets will have the same mean. Therefore corresponding distributions are found by matching variances of two- and three-dimensional local porosity distributions. The variance can be independently determined from correlation functions. Equating variances leads to a scaling relation for lengths in this limit. Three particular systems are examined in order to show that this scaling behavior persists at smaller length-scales.

CHARACTERISTIC OF PORE STRUCTURE AND FLOW PROPERTY IN SANDSTONES BASED ON LOW FIELD NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE

Abstract:Surface relaxivity is the most significant parameter that converts transverse relaxation time into pore size in porous media. However, the value of surface relaxivity is difficult to obtain. This paper focuses on measuring surface relaxivity to evaluate permeability of two types of sandstones (loose sandstone and tight sandstone), combining the high-speed centrifugation with nuclear magnetic resonance test. The results reveal the surface relaxivities for loose sandstones (1.89-2.20 μm/s) are larger than that for tight sandstones (0.69-0.87 μm/s). The measured surface relaxivity is consistent with that from the method of monolayer water adsorption. During centrifugation, the variation of water content is analyzed, including the pore with different size categories. Based on the measured surface relaxivity, the Schlumberger doll research model is used to estimate the absolute permeability of sandstones.

Abstract:Permeability determines the exploration and development efficiency of the oil and gas field, while the pore structure directly affects the permeability of sandstones. Therefore, in the current study, the pore structure and permeability of sandstones were quantitatively analyzed from macro and micro perspectives. With SEM images at different magnifications, pore size distributions (PSD) were obtained, and results were compared with values from the mercury intrusion method. Based on fractal theory, relationships between fractal dimension, magnifications, and porosity were analyzed, they showed apparent regularity. According to the results of PSD, permeability was further studied, while predicted values were more extensive than experiment results. With multislice CT images, the pore structure was obtained from the three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction. The connectivity of pores was discussed. In addition, an improved permeability estimation method based on multiple binary images was proposed, the permeability of A1 and A2 are 1.97 fm2 and 1.94 fm2 respectively, which are close to the experimental result (1.48 fm2 at the confining pressure of 1 MPa). Meanwhile, it can also eliminate the dispersion of the calculation based on the two-dimensional SEM image.

Abstract:Several methods have been developed to characterize the pore spaces in sandstone reservoirs using data on the pore-throat-size distribution obtained from mercury injection tests. The Winland equation, the threshold pressure, the displacement pressure, and Pittman's equation are mostly used for this purpose to delineate the stratigraphic traps and seals. This study examines the reliability of these methods applied to the highly permeable Nubia sandstones in their type section in southern Egypt. These sandstones are composed mainly of siliceous sandstones and constitute the main Paleozoic–Cretaceous aquifers and reservoirs in Egypt. Routine core analysis and mercury injection tests were conducted to delineate the pore network characteristics for these rocks. The relationships between helium porosity and the uncorrected air permeability from the routine core analysis, and the various parameters derived from mercury injection–capillary pressure curves were established using multiple regressions. This study indicates the high reliability of the displacement pressure at 10% mercury saturation and also reveals the apex of Pittman's hyperbole at 45% mercury saturation as a complexity apex at which the pore network becomes highly chaotic. Despite the great benefits of such types of measurements, they are not commonly used because of their high cost. This study introduces a series of empirical equations for constructing a partial pore-aperture-size distribution curve from routine core analysis for the highly permeable rocks.

Abstract:A novel method was developed to establish a realistic three dimensional（3D） network model representing pore space in low permeability sandstone.Digital core of rock sample was established by the combination of micro-CT scanning and image processing,then 3D pore-throat network model was extracted from the digital core through analyzing pore space topology,calculating pore-throat parameters and simplifying the shapes of pores and throats.The good agreements between predicted and measured porosity and absolute permeability verified the validity of this new network model.Gas-water flow mechanism was studied by using pore-scale simulations,and the influence of pore structure parameters,including coordination number,aspect ratio and shape factor,on gas-water flow,was investigated.The present simulation results show that with the increment of coordination number,gas flow ability in network improves and the effect of invading water on blocking gas flow weakens.The smaller the aspect ratio is,the stronger the anisotropy of the network is,resulting in the increase of seepage resistance.It is found that the shape factor mainly affects the end points in relative permeability curves,and for a highly irregular pore or throat with a small shape factor,the irreducible water saturation（Swi） and residual gas saturation（Sgr） are relatively high.
Evaluation of the Percolation Sensitivity of Loose Sandstone Using Digital Core Technology

Abstract:Background: The integrity of the extracted core in loose sandstone gas reservoirs is poor, and because hydration and collapse easily occur, it is difficult to evaluate the sensitivity characteristics accurately by the traditional core flooding experiments. Objectives: We instead investigate the stress sensitivity and water sensitivity of the formation water soaking time using digital core technology. Methods: We take the core of a loose sandstone gas reservoir as a research object and begin by scanning the core samples with a CT scanner. A three-dimensional image of the core can be obtained, the digital information extracted, the pore structure of the porous media mapped directly to the network, and a digital core established using the principles of fractal geometry. The three-dimensional pore network model can also be extracted. Next, we can compare and correct the results calculated by the model based on the real core experimental results, and an objective and effective digital core model can be obtained. Results and Conclusion: Finally, we can calculate the different effective stress, pore throat parameters (pore throat radius, shape factor, coordination number, pore-throat ratio) and relative permeability of different formation water injury times. The research results demonstrate that in sandstone gas reservoir development, as the effective stress continuously increases, the rock pore-throat parameters continue to decrease, and the permeability of the reservoir rock ultimately declines by more than 43.2%. Clay minerals will expand after the edge and bottom water intrude into the reservoir and soak it for a long time: the pore throat is significantly narrowed within 30 days, while after 30 days more, the pore throat undergoes any only slight further changes, and the final permeability decline of the reservoir rock is up to 5.7%. The research results provide important basic petrophysical data for the development of loose sandstone gas reservoirs which, in turn, provide a scientific basis for formulating a reasonable gas production rate in a gas reservoir.
Experimental Measurement of Frequency-Dependent Permeability and Streaming Potential of Sandstones

Abstract:Abstract Hydraulic flow, electrical flow and the passage of elastic waves through porous media are all linked by electrokinetic processes. In its simplest form, the passage of elastic waves through the porous medium causes fluid to flow through that medium and that flow gives rise to an electrical streaming potential and electrical counter-current. These processes are frequency-dependent and governed by coupling coefficients which are themselves frequency-dependent. The link between fluid pressure and fluid flow is described by dynamic permeability, which is characterised by the hydraulic coupling coefficient ( C hp ). The link between fluid pressure and electrical streaming potential is characterised by the streaming potential coefficient ( C sp ). While the steady-state values of such coefficients are well studied and understood, their frequency dependence is not. Previous work has been confined to unconsolidated and disaggregated materials such as sands, gravels and soils. In this work, we present an apparatus for measuring the hydraulic and streaming potential coefficients of high porosity, high permeability consolidated porous media as a function of frequency. The apparatus operates in the range 1 Hz to 2 kHz with a sample of 10 mm diameter and 5–30 mm in length. The full design and validation of the apparatus are described together with the experimental protocol it uses. Initial data are presented for three samples of Boise sandstone, which present as dispersive media with the critical transition frequency of 918.3 ± 99.4 Hz. The in-phase and in-quadrature components of the measured hydraulic and streaming potential coefficients have been compared to the Debye-type dispersion model as well as theoretical models based on bundles of capillary tubes and porous media. Initial results indicate that the dynamic permeability data present an extremely good fit to the capillary bundle and Debye-type dispersion models, while the streaming potential coefficient presents an extremely good fit to all of the models up to the critical transition frequency, but diverges at higher frequencies. The streaming potential coefficient data are best fitted by the Pride model and its Walker and Glover simplification. Characteristic pore size values calculated from the measured critical transition frequency fell within 1.73% of independent measures of this parameter, while the values calculated directly from the Packard model showed an underestimation by about 12%.

Abstract:To investigate the percolation mechanism of tight sandstone reservoirs, qualitative and quantitative methods are applied to analyze the pore structure of the Ordos Basin through scanning electron microscopy and high-pressure mercury injection. Based on gas–water relative permeability data and the visualization of real sandstone models, a gas–water displacement experiment was carried out to simulate the percolation mechanism and fluid distribution of different pore types. The results show that: 1 The percolation of different pore types varies greatly, and the irreducible water saturation decreases when the reservoir properties improve. The relative permeability of gas at an irreducible water saturation increases, the width of the two-phase percolation area increases, and the percolation ability is enhanced as the reservoir properties improve. 2 The gas–water displacement mode changes from fingering to uniform displacement with the improvement of pore type, which is beneficial to the formation of effective reservoirs filled with natural gas under the same hydrocarbon generation conditions. 3 The time required for the pressure relief of samples with good reservoir properties is short, and the recovery is higher with the improvement of pore type. 4 The residual water in samples with a poor pore type increases, which decreases the relative permeability of gas and recovery. A reasonable development pattern should be carried out, and the production pressure difference should be strictly controlled to maximize productivity. This study provides theoretical guidance for the development of tight sandstone reservoirs in the Ordos Basin.

Digital reconstruction of reservoir sandstones to predict hydraulic and mechanical rock properties

Abstract:Quantifying trends in hydraulic and mechanical properties of reservoir sandstones has a wide practical importance for many applications related to geological subsurface utilization. In that regard, predicting macroscopic rock properties requires detailed information on their microstructure [1]. In order to fundamentally understand the pore-scale processes governing the rock behaviour, digital rock physics represents a powerful and flexible approach to investigate essential rock property relations [2]. This was shown, e.g., for hydraulic effects of anhydrite cement in the Bentheim sandstone in relation to an unsuccessful drilling campaign at the geothermal well Allerm&#246;he, Germany [3]. Rock weakening due to decreasing calcite mineral content was also demonstrated by application of numerical simulations [4].&#160;In the present study, a process-based method is used for reconstructing the full 3D microstructure of three typical reservoir reference rocks: the Fontainebleau, Berea and Bentheim sandstones. For that purpose, grains are initially deposited under the influence of gravity and afterwards diagenetically consolidated. The resulting evolution in porosity, permeability and rock stiffness is examined and compared to the respective micro-CT scans of the sandstones. The presented approach enables to efficiently generate synthetic sandstone samples over a broad range of porosities, comprising the microstructural complexity of natural rocks and considering any desired size, sorting and shape of grains. Abstract:Pore volume/surface area and size distribution heterogeneity are two important parameters of pore structures, which restrict the gas-water-oil migration process in sandstone reservoirs. The fractal theory has been proved to be one of the most effective methods to quantify pore distribution heterogeneity. However, the dynamic variation of porosity and permeability due to fractal characteristics has been rarely studied. In this paper, physical properties, mineral composition, and pore distribution of 18 groups of sandstone samples were analyzed using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and high-pressure mercury injection tests. Then, Sierpinski model, Menger model, thermodynamic model, and multi-fractal model were used to calculate the fractal dimension of the pore volume. Thus, the relationship between fractal dimension and porosity/permeability variation rate, and pore compressibility were studied. The results are as follows. 1) All samples can be divided into three types based on pore volume (0.9 cm 3 ·g −1 ) and mercury removal efficiency (35%), i.e., Type A (< 0.9 cm 3 ·g −1 and 0.9 cm 3 ·g −1 and 0.9 cm 3 ·g −1 and > 35%). 2) Four fractal models had poor applicability in characterizing fractal characteristics of different sample types. The fractal dimension by the Sierpinski model had a good linear correlation with that of other models. Pores with smaller volumes dominated the overall pore distribution heterogeneity by multi-fractal dimension. The pore diameter between 200–1000 nm and larger than 1000 nm was the key pore size interval that determined the fractal characteristics. 3) With the increase of confining pressures, porosity and permeability decreased in the form of a power function. The compressibility coefficient of typical samples was 0.002–0.2 MPa −1 . The compressibility of Types A and B was significantly higher than that of Type C, indicating that the total pore volume was not the key factor affecting the pore compressibility. The correlation of compressibility coefficient/porosity variation rate with pore volume (total and different size pore volume), fractal value and mineral component were not significant. This indicates that these three factors comprehensively restricted pore compression.

Investigating rough single-fracture permeabilities with persistent homology

Abstract:The permeability of rock fractures is a crucial parameter for flow processes in the subsurface. In the last few decades, different methods were developed to investigate on permeability in fractures, such as flow-through experiments, numerical flow simulations, or empirical equations. In recent years, the topological method of persistent homology was also used to estimate the permeability of fracture networks and porous rocks but not for rough single fractures yet. Hence, we apply persistent homology analysis on a decimetre-scale, rough sandstone bedding joint. To investigate the influence of roughness, three different data sets are created to perform the analysis: (1) 200 μm , (2) 100 μm , and (3) 50 μm resolutions. All estimated permeabilities were then compared to values derived by experimental air permeameter measurements and numerical flow simulation. The results reveal that persistent homology analysis is able to estimate the permeability of a single fracture, even if it tends to slightly overestimate permeabilities compared to conventional methods. Previous studies using porous media showed the same overestimation trend. Furthermore, the expenditure of time for persistent homology analysis, as well as air permeameter measurements and numerical flow simulation, was compared, which showed that persistent homology analysis can be also an acceptable alternative method.

How Sandstone Porosity and Permeability Vary with Diagenetic Minerals in the Scotian Basin, Offshore Eastern Canada: Implications for Reservoir Quality

Abstract:The Scotian Basin is an under-explored offshore basin that has produced gas and minor oil from Jurassic–Cretaceous deltaic sandstones. Reservoir quality is an important exploration risk in the basin. This study evaluates whether there are systematic stratigraphic or geographic variations in diagenetic mineral assemblage control of reservoir porosity and permeability. Three data sets are used: a compilation of all available core-plug porosity and permeability measurements (3271 in total), a subset of 577 corresponding to thin sections with lithofacies assignments, and a subset of 35 thin sections principally from reservoir sandstones, in which modal abundance of diagenetic minerals has been determined by image analysis of scanning electron microscope backscattered electron images. Abundances above a 4% threshold of diagenetic kaolinite, calcite and ankerite correlate inversely with permeability, but chlorite and possibly siderite correlate positively. Diagenetic assemblages show no systematic variation with stratigraphy or geography, both of which may involve variable detrital supply. Permeability shows the well-known variation with grain size and depth of burial, but after correcting for these effects it is greatest in estuarine channel and river-mouth turbidite sandstones. This is because these facies preferentially develop chlorite rims on detrital quartz grains and are also the sites of enhanced flow of late basinal fluids resulting in secondary porosity. Local effects such as facies distribution, architecture of channel sandstones, fluid pathways related to complex salt tectonics, and the effects of overpressure are more important than predictable basin-wide effects in controlling sandstone reservoir quality.
