Abstract:Approximately 108 million people in North America and Europe suffer from chronic pain. Virtual reality (VR) is a promising method for pain management in a clinical setting due to the distracting properties of an immersive virtual environment. In this study, we demonstrated the potential use of mobile phones as a means of delivering an easily accessible, immersive experience. Thirty-one patients tested VR pain distraction. Objective measurements of heart rate correlated to decreased anxiety, while, subjectively, patients also reported reduced levels of discomfort. The positive results of this study indicate that mobile phones can provide an immersive experience sufficient to deliver pain management distraction. Because mobile devices are widely available, the potential for developing pain management programs that are accessible has become a realistic possibility.

Abstract:The kinetics of non-ionic surfactant adsorption at a fluid-fluid interface from a micellar solution is considered theoretically. Our model takes into account the effect of micelle relaxation on the diffusion of the free surfactant molecules. It is shown that non-ionic surfactants undergo either a diffusion or a kinetically limited adsorption according to the characteristic relaxation time of the micelles. This gives a new interpretation for the observed dynamical surface tension of micellar solutions.

Abstract:We present a new theoretical approach to the kinetics of micelle formation in surfactant solutions, in which the various stages of aggregation are treated as constrained paths on a single free-energy landscape. Three stages of well-separated time scales are distinguished. The first and longest stage involves homogeneous nucleation of micelles, for which we derive the size of the critical nuclei, their concentration, and the nucleation rate. Subsequently, a much faster growth stage takes place, which is found to be diffusion-limited for surfactant concentrations slightly above the critical micellar concentration (cmc) and either diffusion-limited or kinetically limited for higher concentrations. The time evolution of the growth is derived for both cases. At the end of the growth stage, the micelle size may be either larger or smaller than its equilibrium value, depending on concentration. A final stage of equilibration follows, during which the micelles relax to their equilibrium size through fission or fusion. Both cases of fixed surfactant concentration (closed system) and contact with a reservoir of surfactant monomers (open system) are addressed and found to exhibit very different kinetics. In particular, we find that micelle formation in an open system should be kinetically suppressed over macroscopic times and involve two stages of micelle nucleation rather than one.

Abstract:The adsorption kinetics of the cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide at the air-water interface has been studied by the maximum bubble pressure method at concentrations below the critical micellar concentration. At short times, the adsorption is diffusion-limited. At longer times, the surface tension shows an intermediate plateau and can no longer be accounted for by a diffusion limited process. Instead, adsorption appears kinetically controlled and slowed down by an adsorption barrier. A Poisson-Boltzmann theory for the electrostatic repulsion from the surface does not fully account for the observed potential barrier. The possibility of a surface phase transition is expected from the fitted isotherms but has not been observed by Brewster angle microscopy.

Dynamic surface tension and adsorption mechanism of surfactin biosurfactant at the air–water interface

Abstract:The dynamic adsorption of the anionic biosurfactant, surfactin, at the air–water interface has been investigated in this work and compared to those of two synthetic surfactants: the anionic sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) and the nonionic octaethylene glycol monotetradecyl ether (C14E8). The results revealed that surfactin adsorption at the air–water interface is purely controlled by diffusion mechanism at the initial stage of the adsorption process (i.e., t→0$$t \to 0$$), but shifts towards a mixed diffusion-barrier mechanism when surface tension approaches equilibrium (i.e., t→∞$$t \to \infty$$) due to the development of an energy barrier for adsorption. Such energy barrier has been found to be a function of the surfactin bulk concentration (increases with increasing surfactin concentration) and it is estimated to be in the range of 1.8–9.5 kJ/mol. Interestingly, such a trend (pure diffusion-controlled mechanism at t→0$$t \to 0$$ and mixed diffusion-barrier mechanism at t→∞$$t \to \infty$$) has been also observed for the nonionic C14E8 surfactant. Unlike the pure diffusion-controlled mechanism of the initial surfactin adsorption, which was the case in the presence and the absence of the sodium ion (Na+), SDBS showed a mixed diffusion-barrier controlled at both short and long time, with an energy barrier of 3.0–9.0 and 3.8–18.0 kJ/mol, respectively. Such finding highlights the nonionic-like adsorption mechanism of surfactin despite its negative charge.

Abstract:The long-lasting stability of nanoparticle (NP) suspensions in aqueous solution is one of the main challenges in colloidal science. The addition of surfactants is generally adopted to increase the free energy barrier between NPs and hence to ensure a more stable condition avoiding the NP sedimentation. However, a tailored prediction of surfactant concentration enabling a good dispersion of NPs is still an ambitious objective. Here, we demonstrate the efficiency of coupling steered molecular dynamics (SMD) with the Langmuir theory of adsorption in the low surfactant concentration regime, to predict the adsorption isotherm of sodium-dodecyl-sulfate (SDS) on bare α-alumina NPs suspended in aqueous solution. The resulting adsorption free energy landscapes (FELs) are also investigated by tuning the percentage of SDS molecules coating the target bare NP. Our findings shed light on the competing role of enthalpic and entropic interaction contributions. On one hand, the adsorption is highly promoted by the tail–NP and tail–tail nonbonded interaction adhesion; on the other hand, our results unveil the entropic nature of water and surfactant steric effects occurring at the NP surface and preventing the adsorption. Finally, a thorough analysis on the steering works emphasizes the role of the NP curvature in the FEL of adsorption. In particular, we show that, moving from a solid infinite flat surface to a nanoscale particle, a deviation from a Markovian dynamics of adsorption occurs in close proximity to a curved solid–liquid interface. Here, both the NP curvature effect and nanoscale morphology promote a modification of the thermodynamics state of adsorption with a consequent splitting of the free energy profiles and the identification of specific sites of adsorption. The modeling framework suggested in this Article provides physical insights in the surfactant adsorption onto spherical NPs and suggests some guidelines to rationally design stable NP suspensions in aqueous solutions.A novel methodology is presented for predicting the surfactant adsorption isotherm at low coverage on high-curvature nanoparticles by linking molecular dynamics and the Langmuir theory of adsorption.

Abstract:Many biological molecules are by their nature amphiphilic and have the ability to act as surfactants, stabilizing interfaces between aqueous and immiscible oil phases. In this paper, we explore the adsorption kinetics of surfactin, a naturally occurring cyclic lipopeptide, at hexadecane/water interfaces and compare and contrast its adsorption behaviour with that of synthetic alkyl benzene sulfonate isomers, through direct measurements of changes in interfacial tension upon surfactant adsorption. We access millisecond time resolution in kinetic measurements by making use of droplet microfluidics to probe the interfacial tension of hexadecane droplets dispersed in a continuous water phase through monitoring their deformation when the droplets are exposed to shear flows in a microfluidic channel with regular corrugations. Our results reveal that surfactin rapidly adsorbs to the interface, thus the interfacial tension equilibrates within 300 ms, while the synthetic surfactants used undergo adsorption processes at an approximately one order of magnitude longer timescale. The approach presented may provide opportunities for understanding and modulating the adsorption mechanism of amphiphiles on a variety of interfaces in the context of life sciences and industrial applications.
Self-assembly of a surfactin nanolayer at solid-liquid and air-liquid interfaces

Abstract:Surfactin, a sustainable and environmentally friendly surface active agent, is used as a model to study the adsorption of biosurfactants at hydrophobic and hydrophilic solid-liquid interfaces as well as the air-liquid interface. Surfactin adsorption was monitored as a function of time and concentration using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique in the case of the solid-liquid interfaces or the drop shape analysis (DSA) technique in the case of the air-liquid interface. The results obtained in this study showed that surfactin adsorption at the "hard" hydrophobic (functionalized with octadecanethiol) solid-liquid and the "soft" air-liquid interface were 1.12 ± 0.01 mg m(-2) (area per molecule of 157 ± 2 Å(2)) and 1.11 ± 0.05 mg m(-2) (area per molecule of 159 ± 7 Å(2)), respectively, demonstrating the negligible effect of the interface "hardness" on surfactin adsorption. The adsorption of surfactin at the hydrophilic (functionalized with β-mercaptoethanol) solid-liquid interface was about threefold lower than its adsorption at the hydrophobic-liquid interfaces, revealing the importance of hydrophobic interaction in surfactin adsorption process. The affinity constant of surfactin for the investigated interfaces follows the following order: air > octadecanethiol > β-mercaptoethanol. Biosurfactants, such as surfactin, are expected to replace the conventional fossil-based surfactants in several applications, and therefore the current study is a contribution towards the fundamental understanding of biosurfactant behavior, on a molecular level, at hydrophobic and hydrophilic solid-liquid interfaces in addition to the air-liquid interface. Such understanding might aid further optimization of the utilization of surfactin in a number of industrial applications such as enhanced oil recovery, bioremediation, and detergency.
Catalytic Graphitization of Coal-Based Carbon Materials with Light Rare Earth Elements.

Abstract:The catalytic graphitization mechanism of coal-based carbon materials with light rare earth elements was investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, selected-area electron diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The interface between light rare earth elements and carbon materials was carefully observed, and two routes of rare earth elements catalyzing the carbon materials were found: dissolution-precipitation and carbide formation-decomposition. These two simultaneous processes certainly accelerate the catalytic graphitization of carbon materials, and light rare earth elements exert significant influence on the microstructure and thermal conductivity of graphite. Moreover, by virtue of praseodymium (Pr), it was found that a highly crystallographic orientation of graphite was induced and formed, which was reasonably attributed to the similar arrangements of the planes perpendicular to (001) in both graphite and Pr crystals. The interface between Pr and carbon was found to be an important factor for the orientation of graphite structure.

Abstract:It is well-known that surfactants tend to aggregate into clusters or micelles in aqueous solutions due to their special structures, and it is difficult for the surfactant molecules involved in the aggregation to move spontaneously to the oil-water interface. In this article, we developed a new grand-canonical molecular dynamics (GCMD) model to predict the saturated adsorption amount of surfactant with constant concentration of surfactant molecules in the bulk phase, which can prevent surfactants aggregating in the bulk phase and get the atomic details of the interfacial structural change with increase of the adsorption amount through a single GCMD run. The adsorption of anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) at the heptane-water interface was studied to validate the model. The saturated adsorption amount obtained from the GCMD simulation is consistent with the experimental results. The adsorption kinetics of SDS molecules during the simulation can be divided into three stages: linear adsorption stage, transition adsorption stage, and dynamic equilibrium stage. We also carried out equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD) simulations to compare with GCMD simulation. This GCMD model can effectively reduce the simulation time with correct prediction of the interfacial saturation adsorption. We believe the GCMD method could be especially helpful for the computational study of surfactant adsorption under complex environments or emulsion systems with the adsorption of multiple types of surfactants.

Abstract:Phospholipids are ubiquitous components of biomembranes and common biomaterials used in many bioengineering applications. Understanding adsorption of phospholipids at the air-water surface plays an important role in the study of pulmonary surfactants and cell membranes. To date, however, the biophysical mechanisms of phospholipid adsorption are still unknown. It is challenging to reveal the molecular structure of adsorbed phospholipid films. Using combined experiments with constrained drop surfactometry and molecular dynamics simulations, here, we studied the biophysical mechanisms of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) adsorption at the air-water surface. It was found that the DPPC film adsorbed from vesicles showed distinct equilibrium surface tensions from the DPPC monolayer spread via organic solvents. Our simulations revealed that only the outer leaflet of the DPPC vesicle is capable of unzipping and spreading at the air-water surface, whereas the inner leaflet remains intact and forms an inverted micelle to the interfacial monolayer. This inverted micelle increases the local curvature of the monolayer, thus leading to a loosely packed monolayer at the air-water surface and hence a higher equilibrium surface tension. These findings provide novel insights, to our knowledge, into the mechanism of the phospholipid and pulmonary surfactant adsorption and may help understand the structure-function correlation in biomembranes.

Abstract:Surfactant adsorption plays an important role in the microfluidic droplet formation process, which manifested as dynamic interfacial tension phenomenon. Due to rapid droplet expansion and convection flow around the droplet, traditional methods of interfacial tension measurement are difficult to investigate the surfactant adsorption kinetics in microfluidic process. We thus developed a differential pressure based microfluidic platform and proposed an in-situ method to determine time-evolving interfacial tension during microfluidic droplet formation according to Young-Laplace equation in this research. Four classical nonionic surfactants: Triton X-100, Tween 20, Brij 56, and Brij 58 were tested with classical n-octant/water as the working system. The concentrations of these surfactants at interface were further determined from the measured interfacial tension based on Frumkin adsorption model. The adsorption rates of surfactant showed that increasing surfactant concentration in the bulk solution and flow rate of continuous phase both promoted surfactant adsorption in the cases of Tween 20, Brij 56, and Brij 58, indicating the mass transfer-controlled mechanism of adsorption kinetics. The average thickness of mass transfer boundary layer ranged from 0.1 to 5 mu m was determined from the mass transfer rate and a correlation equation was proposed to predict the thickness. However, the adsorption mechanism of Triton X-100 turned to be kinetics-controlled for its high critical micelle concentration, which helped to determine the adsorption and desorption rate constants.

Abstract:This review presents some new equations of state and adsorption isotherms which describe mixed monolayers of surfactants possessing different molar area values, monolayers which comprise surfactants and proteins capable of reorientation or reconformation. For systems allowing reorientation and aggregation, the effect of self-regulation of the surface layer composition caused by surface pressure is considered. This effect is especially pronounced in protein adsorption layers, where not only the composition, but also the thickness of the adsorption layer depends on surface pressure. This principle was first proposed by Paul Joos for describing surface layers. The results of the proposed models have a direct impact on dynamic surface phenomena. The rate of adsorption for a diffusion-controlled mechanism depends on molecular reorientation or aggregation processes within the surface layer. For protein surface layers mainly conformational changes at the surface determine the rate of adsorption/desorption and other dynamic and mechanical properties of surface layers.

Abstract:The interaction of interfacial molecules was a hot issue in many fields, such as petroleum: the adsorption kinetics process of surfactant molecules on the interface was the key to reduce the dynamic interfacial tension and enhance oil recovery. Since the aggregation behavior of surfactant molecules on the water surface would lead to changes in the dielectric properties of the surface layer, we applied a dielectric detection technology with a vertical resolution of nanometer precision, oblique-incidence reflectivity difference (OIRD) technology, to study the adsorption kinetics of surfactant molecules on the water surface in this article. According to the test results, we established a model of molecular dynamic adsorption and explained its mechanism. This dynamic process could be divided into three stages: micelles dissociated in bulk water, molecules diffused to the subsurface layer, and molecules broke through the adsorption barrier and adsorbed on the water surface. Among them, the diffusion process was in accordance with Fick's second law, and the process of surfactant molecules being adsorbed from the subsurface to the surface can be described by the Arrhenius formula. This work was not only applicable to the petroleum field to understand the essence of surfactant reducing surface tension but also to help investigate the subject of molecular behavior at the liquid–liquid or gas–liquid interface in other fields.

Simulating Surfactant Spreading: Impact of a Physically Motivated Equation of State

Abstract:For more than two decades, a single model for the spreading of a surfactant-driven thin liquid film has dominated the applied mathematics literature on the subject. Recently, through the use of fluorescently-tagged lipids, it has become possible to make direct, quantitative comparisons between experiments and models. These comparisons have revealed two important discrepancies between simulations and experiments: the spatial distribution of the surfactant layer, and the timescale over which spreading occurs. In this paper, we present numerical simulations that demonstrate the impact of the particular choice of the equation of state (EoS) relating the surfactant concentration to the surface tension. Previous choices of the model EoS have been an ad-hoc decreasing function. Here, we instead propose an empirically-motivated equation of state; this provides a route to resolving some discrepancies and raises new issues to be pursued in future experiments. In addition, we test the influence of the choice of initial conditions and values for the non-dimensional groups. We demonstrate that the choice of EoS improves the agreement in surfactant distribution morphology between simulations and experiments, and impacts the dynamics of the simulations. The relevant feature of the EoS, the gradient, has distinct regions for empirically motivated choices, which suggests that future work will need to consider more than one timescale. We observe that the non-dimensional number controlling the relative importance of gravitational vs. capillary forces has a larger impact on the dynamics than the other non-dimensional groups. Finally, we observe that the experimental approach of using a ring to contain the surfactant could affect the surfactant and fluid dynamics if it disrupts the intended initial surfactant distribution. However, the meniscus itself does not significantly affect the dynamics.

Abstract:Surfactant adsorption plays an important role in microfluidics, which can be investigated by the dynamic evolution of interfacial tension. A differential pressure-based method is proposed to understand the basic laws of time-evolving interfacial tension and adsorption kinetics of ionic surfactants during the microfluidic droplet formation processes. Instantaneous flow rates and flow resistances are precisely analyzed based on auto-recognized microscopic images and the waveform of differential pressure, and the interfacial tension is determined from the Young-Laplace equation with a time resolution of 1/60 s. The concentration of surfactant at the liquid-liquid interface is obtained according to the Frumkin adsorption model, leading to an in-depth understanding of the adsorption rates and the apparent mass transfer rates of surfactants. The surfactant adsorption is demonstrated to obey the kinetic-controlled adsorption mechanism and therefore a measurement method for the adsorption rate constant is created to understand the kinetic characteristics of small-molecule ionic surfactants.(c) 2022 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:Surfactants - molecules and particles that preferentially adsorb to fluid interfaces - play a ubiquitous role in the fluids of industry, of nature, and of life. Since most surfactants cannot be seen directly, their behavior must be inferred from their impact on observed flows, like the buoyant rise of a bubble, or the thickness of a coating film. In so doing, however, a difficulty arises: physically distinct surfactant processes can affect measurable flows in qualitatively identical ways, raising the specter of confusion or even misinterpretation. This Perspective describes, in one coherent piece, both the equilibrium properties and dynamic processes of surfactants, to better enable the fluid mechanics community to understand, interpret, and design surfactant/fluid systems. Specifically, §2 treats the equilibrium thermodynamics of surfactants at interfaces, including surface pressure, isotherms of soluble and insoluble surfactants, and surface dilatational moduli (Gibbs and Marangoni). §3 describes surfactant dynamics in fluid systems, including surfactant transport and interfacial stress boundary conditions, the competition between surface diffusion, advection, and adsorption/desorption, Marangoni stresses and flows, and surface excess rheology. §4 discusses paradigmatic problems from fluid mechanics that are impacted by surfactants, including translating drops and bubbles, surfactant adsorption to clean and oscillating interfaces; capillary wave damping, thin film dynamics, foam drainage, and the dynamics of particles and probes at surfactant-laden interfaces. Finally, §5 discusses the additional richness and complexity that frequently arise in 'real' surfactants, including phase transitions, phase coexistence, and polycrystalline phases within surfactant monolayers, and their impact on non-Newtonian surface rheology.

Abstract:In this research, a three-dimensional model is proposed to simulate the behavior of particle-covered droplets that contain soluble surfactant. The model includes a full two-way coupling between surfactant transport and particle motion, with surfactant concentrations at the interface and in the bulk linked to the flow and motion of the interface by a convection-diffusion equation. A front-tracking method is used to track the interfacial flow, while a semi-resolved particle method is used to model the particles, accounting for various forces acting on them, such as the excluded volume force, the direct contact force and the hydrodynamic lubrication force. The model also includes a surfactant-dependent surface tension that can affect the particle-interface interactions. The model is validated against previous numerical data and a parametric study is performed to examine the delicate interplay between flow fields and interfaces associated with surfactant concentration and particle motion. The study then investigates the role of surfactants in the dynamics of a particle-covered droplet, focusing on their coupled influence on droplet deformation. In addition, it is observed that particles bridge colliding droplet interfaces and suppress fluid drainage from the gap, preventing droplet coalescence along with the interparticle repulsion force.
