Abstract:The dynamical properties of the gauge theory of Born-Infeld type action, which is expected as the high-energy effective theory, are investigated by adding a complex scalar field to this gauge system. Especially the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism is addressed in this theory.

Abstract:We consider the six dimensional N=(1,0) hypermultiplet model coupled to an external field of the Abelian vector multiplet in harmonic superspace approach. Using the superfield proper-time technique we find the divergent part of the effective action and derive the complete finite induced low-energy superfield effective action. This effective action depends on external field and contains in bosonic sector all the powers of the constant Maxwell field strength. The obtained result can be treated as the 6D, N=(1,0) supersymmetric Heisenberg-Euler type effective action.

Effective Action and Gravitational Pair Production in (A)dS Spacetime

Abstract:We compute the effective action for a massive scalar field in (A)dS spacetime using the Euclidean heat kernel method. We highlight that in even-dimensional dS spacetimes, the effective action exhibits a non-trivial imaginary part, reminiscent of the Schwinger effect in quantum electrodynamics. We find consistency between the results obtained from the Euclidean heat kernel method with those from the Green's function approach in Lorentzian signature. Additionally, we compare our results with the perturbative calculations and find that the perturbation theory almost fails to capture the correct non-perturbative imaginary part of the effective action. This discrepancy presents a challenge to computing the gravitational pair production using the perturbation theory.

Abstract:The formation of a confining string (or a p-brane) in a Poincaré invariant theory breaks spontaneously this symmetry which is thereby realized non-linearly in the effective action of these extended objects. As a consequence the form of the action is strongly constrained. A new general method is described to obtain in a systematic way higher order Lorentz invariant contributions to this action. We find a simple recipe to promote a term invariant under the stability subgroup to an expression invariant under the whole Lorentz group. It is based on the following three steps: in the saturation of worldsheet (or worldvolume) indices replace the Minkowski metric with the inverse of the induced metric; in the saturation of indices of the transverse coordinates describing the position of the extended object replace the Euclidean metric with a certain new metric; finally replace the field derivatives of order higher than two with a certain covariant derivative. Lorentz invariance of the expression modified this way immediately follows. We find in particular that the leading bulk deviation of the Nambu Goto action in any space-time dimensions is proportional to the square of scalar curvature.

Extended string field theory for massless higher-spin fields

Abstract:We propose a new gauge field theory which is an extension of ordinary string field theory by assembling multiple state spaces of the bosonic string. The theory includes higher-spin fields in its massless spectrum together with the infinite tower of massive fields. From the theory, we can easily extract the minimal gauge-invariant quadratic action for tensor fields with any symmetry. As examples, we explicitly derive the gauge-invariant actions for some simple mixed symmetric tensor fields. We also construct covariantly gauge-fixed action by extending the method developed for string field theory.

Abstract:We investigate the effective potential for Abelian Maxwell--Chern--Simons systems. The calculations follow an alternate approach, recently proposed as a gauge invariant formulation of the effective potential, constructed in terms of a gauge invariant order parameter. We compare the results with another investigation, obtained within a standard route of calculating the effective potential.

Abstract:In this work, we study a class of higher derivative couplings in the string effective action arising at the junction of topological string theory and supersymmetric gauge theories in the $\Omega$-background. They generalise a series of gravitational couplings involving gravitons and graviphotons, which reproduces the topological string theory partition function. The latter reduces, in the field theory limit, to the partition function of the gauge theory in the $\Omega$-background when one if its parameters, say $\epsilon_+$, is set to zero. This suggests the existence of a one-parameter extension called the refined topological string. The couplings considered in this work involve an additional vector multiplet and are evaluated, perturbatively and non-perturbatively, at the string level. In the field theory limit, they correctly reproduce the partition function of the gauge theory in a general $\Omega$-background. Hence, these couplings provide new perspectives toward a worldsheet definition of the refined topological string.

Abstract:Some field theoretical aspects, such as the effective action and Schwinger pair production, are critically reviewed in strong QED. The difference of the boundary conditions on the solutions of the field equation is discussed to result in the effective action both in the Coulomb and time-dependent gauge. Finally, the apparent spin-statistics inversion is also discussed, where the WKB action for bosons (fermions) works well for fermion (boson) pair-production rate.

The effective potential for string backgrounds from string geometry theory

Abstract:String geometry theory is one of the candidates of the non-perturbative formulation of string theory. In this paper, in the bosonic sector of string geometry theory, we identify perturbative vacua in bosonic string theory, which include general string backgrounds. From fluctuations around these vacua, we derive the path-integrals of perturbative strings on the string backgrounds up to any order. Furthermore, the identification of the perturbative vacua enables us to obtain differential equations that determine an effective potential for string backgrounds. We solve the differential equations and obtain an effective potential explicitly up to the second order. In a generic region, we show that the minimum of the second order potential gives a non-trivial background. This fact supports that the full effective potential can determine the true vacuum in string theory.

Abstract:The problem of gauge independent definition of the effective gauge field is considered. The Slavnov identities corresponding to a system of interacting quantum gauge and classical matter fields, playing the role of a measuring device, are obtained. With their help, in the case of power-counting renormalizable theories, gauge independence of the effective device action is proved in the low-energy limit, which allows to introduce the gauge independent notion of the effective gauge field.

Abstract:The Born amplitudes for quasi-multi-Regge kinematics of produced gluons are constructed in accordance with the Feynman rules including apart from usual Yang-Mills vertices also an infinite number of induced vertices. The new vertices describe the interaction of physical gluons produced in direct channels with the reggeized gluons propagating in crossing channels. The nonlinear gauge invariant effective action reproducing these Feynman rules is constructed with the use of the Wilson contour integrals. After integrating over the physical degrees of freedom the reggeon action is derived.

Abstract:We elaborate on a recently proposed geometric framework for scalar effective field theories. Starting from the action, a metric can be identified that enables the construction of geometric quantities on the associated functional manifold. These objects transform covariantly under general field redefinitions that relate different operator bases, including those involving derivatives. We present a novel geometric formula for the amplitudes of the theory, where the vertices in Feynman diagrams are replaced by their geometrized counterparts. This makes the on-shell covariance of amplitudes manifest, providing the link between functional geometry and effective field theories.

Abstract:The dynamics of heavy quarkonium systems in the strong coupling regime reduces to a quantum mechanical problem with a number of potentials which may be organized in powers of 1/m, m being the heavy quark mass. The potentials must be calculated non-perturbatively, for instance in lattice QCD. It is well known that the long distance behavior of the static (1/m^0) potential is well reproduced by an effective string theory. We show that this effective string theory, if correct, should also reproduce the long distance behavior of all 1/m suppressed potentials. We demonstrate the practical usefulness of this result by finding a suitable parameterization of the recently calculated 1/m potential. We also calculate the 1/m^2 velocity dependent and spin dependent potentials. Once Poincaré invariance is implemented, the shapes of most of the spin independent potentials are fully predicted in terms of the string tension, and the shapes of the spin dependent ones in terms of a single parameter.

Stringy constraints on primordial electromagnetic fields in axion inflation

Abstract:We study primordial electromagnetic fields in effective actions of string theory. In contrast to a conventional scenario of producing primordial electromagnetic fields induced by the axion inflation, we deal with the Dirac-Born-Infeld action as a non-linear generation of Maxwell theory. It turns out that the intensity of generated electromagnetic fields is bounded from above by the string scale which can also be rewritten in terms of supersymmetry breaking scale in the context of type IIB Large Volume Scenario. The instability parameter $\xi$ is constrained by the tadpole cancellation condition of D3-branes and a realization of hierarchy between the string scale and the Hubble scale of inflation. Hence, the magnetogenesis can be realized in the limited corner of the string landscape due to the ${\cal O}(1)$ value of the coefficient of Chern-Simons coupling.

Abstract:We derive the field-dependent masses in Fermi gauges for arbitrary scalar extensions of the Standard Model. These masses can be used to construct the effective potential for various models of new physics. We release a flexible Mathematica notebook ( VefFermi ) which performs these calculations and renders large-scale phenomenological studies of various models possible. Motivated by the debate on the importance of gauge dependence, we show that, even in relatively simple models, there exist points where the global minimum is discontinuous in the gauge parameter. Such points require some care in discovering, indicating that a gauge-dependent treatment might still give reasonable results when examining the global features of a model.

Abstract:It is showed that the very recently introduced Lagrangian $loop$ formulation of the lattice Maxwell theory is equivalent to the Villain form in 2+1 dimensions. A transparent description of the classical $loop$ action is given in pure geometrical terms for the $2+1$ and $3+1$ dimensional cases.

Effective Abelian Lattice Gauge Field Theories for scalar-matter-monopole interactions

Abstract:We present a gauge and Lorentz invariant effective field theory model for the interaction of a charged scalar matter field with a magnetic monopole source, described by an external magnetic current. The quantum fluctuations of the monopole field are described effectively by a strongly-coupled ``dual'' $U_{\rm d}(1)$ gauge field, which is independent of the electromagnetic $U_{\rm em}(1)$ gauge field. The effective interactions of the charged matter with the monopole source are described by a gauge invariant mixed Chern-Simons-like (Pontryagin-density) term between the two $U(1)$ gauge fields. The latter interaction coupling is left free, and a Lattice study of the system is performed with the aim of determining the phase structure of this effective theory. Our study shows that, in the spontaneously-broken-symmetry phase, the monopole source triggers, via the mixed Chern-Simons term, which is non-trivial in its presence, the generation of a dynamical singular configuration (magnetic-monopole-like) for the respective gauge fields. The scalar field also behaves in the broken phase in a way similar to that of the scalar sector of the `t Hooft-Polyakov monopole.

Abstract:We present a worldvolume effective action suitable for the study of the confined phase of a (Dp,anti-Dp) system at weak coupling, and we identify the mechanism by which the fundamental string arises from this action when the Dp and the anti-Dp annihilate. We construct an explicit dual action, appropriate for the strong coupling regime, which realizes a generalized Higgs-Stueckelberg phase for the (relative) (p-2)-form dual to the (overall) BI vector, the mechanism put forward by Yi and collaborators for realizing non-perturbatively the breaking of the overall U(1) gauge group. Our results provide an explicit realization of the perturbative breaking of the overall U(1) in a way that is consistent with the duality symmetries of String Theory.

Abstract:We construct the effective potential for a QCD-like theory using the auxiliary field method. The chiral phase transition exhibited by the model at finite temperature and the quark chemical potential is studied from the viewpoint of the shape change of the potential near the critical point. We further generalize the effective potential so as to have quark number and scalar quark densities as independent variables near the tri-critical point.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to construct a quantum effective action for gravitational fields by the effective potential method in quantum field theory. The minimum of the quantum effective action gives an equation of quantum fluctuations. We discuss the quantum fluctuation in the flat spacetime and in the Schwarzschild spacetime. It is shown that a baby spacetime may be created from a classical vacuum through a quantum fluctuation.
