Abstract:The overlap formulation is applied to an anomaly free combination of chiral fermions coupled to U(1) gauge fields on a 2D torus. Evidence is presented that gauge averaging the overlap phases in these models produces correct continuum results.

Abstract:The quantum mechanical concept of quasi-exact solvability is based on the idea of partial algebraizability of spectral problem. This concept is not directly extendable to the systems with infinite number of degrees of freedom. For such systems a new concept based on the partial Bethe Ansatz solvability is proposed. In present paper we demonstrate the constructivity of this concept and formulate a simple method for building quasi-exactly solvable field theoretical models on a one-dimensional lattice. The method automatically leads to local models described by hermitian hamiltonians.

Abstract:We review the spectral flow techniques for computing the index of the overlap Dirac operator including results relevant for SUSY Yang-Mills theories. We describe properties of the overlap Dirac operator, and methods to implement it numerically. We use the results from the spectral flow to illuminate the difficulties in numerical calculations involving domain wall and overlap fermions.

Abstract:The probability amplitude for tunneling between the Dirac vacua corresponding to different signs of a parity breaking fermionic mass $M$ in $2+1$ dimensions is studied, making contact with the continuum overlap formulation for chiral determinants. It is shown that the transition probability in the limit when $M \to \infty$ corresponds, via the overlap formalism, to the squared modulus of a chiral determinant in two Euclidean dimensions. The transition probabilities corresponding to two particular examples: fermions on a torus with twisted boundary conditions, and fermions on a disk in the presence of an external constant magnetic field are evaluated.

Abstract:Integrable $su(2\vert2)_{c}$ symmetric models have integrable boundaries with $osp(2\vert2)$ symmetries, which can be embedded into $su(2\vert2)_{c}$ in two different ways. We dualize the previously obtained asymptotic overlap formulas for one of the embeddings to describe the other embedding and apply the results to describe the asymptotic expectation values of local operators in the presence of a 't Hooft line in N=4 SYM. A peculiar feature of the setting is that in certain gradings only descendant states have non-vanishing overlaps with the boundary state and the overlap formula is not factorized for the Bethe roots.

Abstract:The chiral Jacobian, which is defined with Neuberger's overlap Dirac operator of the lattice fermion, is explicitly evaluated in the continuum limit without expanding it in the gauge coupling constant. Our calculational scheme is simple and straightforward. We determine a coefficient of the chiral anomaly for general values of the mass parameter and the Wilson parameter of the overlap Dirac operator.

Noninvertible anomalies in $SU(N)\times U(1)$ gauge theories

Abstract:We study $4$-dimensional $SU(N)\times U(1)$ gauge theories with a single massless Dirac fermion in the $2$-index symmetric/antisymmetric representations and show that they are endowed with a noninvertible $0$-form $\widetilde {\mathbb Z}_{2(N\pm 2)}^{\chi}$ chiral symmetry along with a $1$-form $\mathbb Z_N^{(1)}$ center symmetry. By using the Hamiltonian formalism and putting the theory on a spatial three-torus $\mathbb T^3$, we construct the non-unitary gauge invariant operator corresponding to $\widetilde {\mathbb Z}_{2(N\pm 2)}^{\chi}$ and find that it acts nontrivially in sectors of the Hilbert space characterized by selected magnetic fluxes. When we subject $\mathbb T^3$ to $\mathbb Z_N^{(1)}$ twists, for $N$ even, in selected magnetic flux sectors, the algebra of $\widetilde {\mathbb Z}_{2(N\pm 2)}^{\chi}$ and $\mathbb Z_N^{(1)}$ fails to commute by a $\mathbb Z_2$ phase. We interpret this noncommutativity as a mixed anomaly between the noninvertible and the $1$-form symmetries. The anomaly implies that all states in the torus Hilbert space with the selected magnetic fluxes exhibit a two-fold degeneracy for arbitrary $\mathbb T^3$ size. The degenerate states are labeled by discrete electric fluxes and are characterized by nonzero expectation values of condensates. In an Appendix, we also discuss how to construct the corresponding noninvertible defect via the ``half-space gauging'' of a discrete one-form magnetic symmetry.

Chiral anomaly in (1+1) dimensions revisited: complementary kinetic perspective and universality

Abstract:We reinvestigate the classic example of chiral anomaly in (1+1) dimensional spacetime. By reviewing the derivation of charge conservation with the semiclassical Boltzmann equation, we argue that chiral anomalies could emerge in (1+1) dimensions without Berry curvature corrections to the kinetic theory. The pivotal step depends only on the asymptotic behavior of the distribution function of the quasiparticle, and thus its dispersion relation, in the limit of $|\mathbf p|\to\pm\infty$ rather than the detailed functional form of the dispersion. We address two subjects motivated by this observation. One concerns reformulating (1+1) dimensional chiral anomaly using kinetic theory with the current algebra approach and the gradient expansion of the Dirac Lagrangian, adding a complementary perspective to the existing approaches. The other demonstrates the universality of chiral anomaly across various quasiparticle dispersions. For two-band models linear in the temporal derivative, with Fujikawa's method we show it is sufficient tohave a chirality-odd strictly monotonic dispersion in order to exhibit chiral anomaly.

Topological gauge actions on the lattice as Overlap fermion determinants

Abstract:Overlap fermion on the lattice has been shown to properly reproduce topological aspects of gauge fields. In this paper, we review the derivation of Overlap fermion formalism in a torus of three space-time dimensions. Using the formalism, we show how to use the Overlap fermion determinants in the massless and infinite mass limits to construct different continuum topological gauge actions, such as the level-$k$ Chern-Simons action, ``half-CS" term and the mixed Chern-Simons (BF) coupling, in a gauge-invariant lattice UV regulated manner. Taking special Abelian and non-Abelian background fields, we demonstrate numerically how the lattice formalism beautifully reproduces the continuum expectations, such as the flow of action under large gauge transformations.

Abstract:We present some results pertaining to partially quenched formulations of the overlap/domain wall operator with the Thirring model in 2+1D. Auxiliary fields are generated with a Shamir domain wall approach and measurements of eigenvalues and condensates are contrasted with different overlap operators. The numerical challenge posed by a non-compact formulation is highlighted, and the effective use of lower accuracy sea fermions is demonstrated.

Abstract:The anomaly cancellation is a basic property of the Standard Model, crucial for its consistence. We consider a lattice chiral gauge theory of massless Wilson fermions interacting with a non-compact massive U(1) field coupled with left and right handed fermions in four dimensions. We prove in the infinite volume limit, for weak coupling and inverse lattice step of the order of boson mass, that the anomaly vanishes up to subleading corrections and under the same condition as in the continuum. The proof is based on a combination of exact Renormalization Group, non perturbative decay bounds of correlations and lattice symmetries.

Abstract:Chiral gauge theories in two dimensions have been receiving much attention recently. Though quantum field theories with gauge field coupling to chiral fermion suffer from the loss of gauge invariance, it can be consistently quantized[1]. A proper quantum treatment of the gauge degrees of freedom in chiral gauge theories uncovers the presence of the Wess-Zumino effective action exactly[2]. In view of these interests in chiral gauge theories, the study of two-dimensional chiral gauge model on the lattice should prove useful. It is well-known that there will appear the species dubling when we naively discretize a fermion on the lattice[3]. In our approach we shall use Wilson fermion[4] which copes the problem[5]. The Wilson term, however, will break not only the chiral invariance but also the gauge invariance when the chiral gauge field is introduced. Aoki[6] had redrived the nonabelian anomaly with consideration of chiral gauge theory on the lattice and thought the existence of the anomaly may be related with the gauge symmetry breaking due to the Wilson term. It will be shown in follows that the Wess-Zumino effective action and the vector-boson mass as the anomalous generation terms appear due to a nontrivial change in the Wilson term under the chiral transformation in fermion.
The ${\Bbb Z}_2$ anomaly in some chiral gauge theories

Abstract:We revisit the simplest Bars-Yankielowicz (BY) model (the $\psi\eta$ model), starting from a model with an additional Dirac pair of fermions in the fundamental representation, together with a complex color-singlet scalar $\phi$ coupled to them through a Yukawa interaction. This model possesses a color-flavor-locked 1-form ${\Bbb Z}_N$ symmetry, due to the intersection of the color $SU(N)$ and two nonanomalous $U(1)$ groups. In the bulk, the model reduces to the $\psi\eta$ model studied earlier when $\phi$ acquires a nonzero vacuum expectation value and the extra fermions pair up, get massive and decouple (thus we will call our extended theory as the ``X-ray model"), while it provides a regularization of the $\Bbb Z_2$ fluxes needed to study the $\Bbb Z_2$ anomaly. The anomalies involving the 1-form ${\Bbb Z}_N$ symmetry reduce, for $N$ even, exactly to the mixed ${\Bbb Z}_2$ anomaly found earlier in the $\psi\eta$ model. The present work is a first significant step to clarify the meaning of the mixed ${\Bbb Z}_2-[{\Bbb Z}_N^{(1)}]^2$ anomaly found in the $\psi\eta$ and in other BY and Georgi-Glashow type $SU(N)$ models with even $N$.

Holography in anomaly flow in orbifold gauge theory

Abstract:In orbifold gauge theory and gauge-Higgs unification models, gauge anomaly flows with an Aharonov-Bohm phase $\theta_H$ in the fifth dimension. We analyze $SU(2)$ gauge theory with doublet fermions in the flat $M^4 \times (S^1/Z_2)$ spacetime and in the Randall-Sundrum (RS) warped space. With orbifold boundary conditions the $U(1)$ part of gauge symmetry remains unbroken at $\theta_H = 0$ and $\pi$. Chiral anomalies smoothly vary with $\theta_H$ in the RS space. Anomaly coefficients associated with this anomaly flow are expressed in terms of the values of the wave functions of gauge fields at the UV and IR branes in the RS space and parity conditions of fermion fields. Holography in anomaly flow is observed. Conditions for the anomaly cancellation turn out independent of $\theta_H$.

Abstract:We undertake a systematic study of the $4$-dimensional $SU(N)$ $2$-index chiral gauge theories and investigate their faithful global symmetries and dynamics. These are a finite set of theories with fermions in the $2$-index symmetric and anti-symmetric representations, with no fundamentals, and they do not admit a large-$N$ limit. We employ a combination of perturbative and nonperturbative methods, enabling us to constrain their infrared (IR) phases. Specifically, we leverage the 't Hooft anomalies associated with continuous and discrete groups to eliminate a few scenarios. In some cases, the anomalies rule out the possibility of fermion composites. In other cases, the interplay between the continuous and discrete anomalies leads to multiple higher-order condensates, which inevitably form to match the anomalies. Further, we pinpoint the most probable symmetry-breaking patterns by searching for condensates that match the full set of anomalies resulting in the smallest number of IR degrees of freedom. Higher-loop $\beta$-function analysis suggests that a few theories may flow to a conformal fixed point.

Abstract:We report the results of a numerical study of staggered overlap fermions, following the construction of Adams which reduces the number of tastes from 4 to 2 without fine-tuning. We study the sensitivity of the operator to the topology of the gauge field, its locality and its robustness to fluctuations of the gauge field. We make a first estimate of the computing cost of a quark propagator calculation, and compare with Neuberger's overlap.

Abstract:The properties of the quark propagator in Landau gauge in quenched QCD are examined for the overlap quark action. The overlap quark action satisfies the Ginsparg-Wilson relation and as such provides an exact lattice realization of chiral symmetry. This in turn implies that the quark action is free of O(a) errors. We present results using the standard Wilson fermion kernel in the overlap formalism on a 12^3× 24 lattice at a spacing of 0.125 fm. We obtain the nonperturbative momentum-dependent wavefunction renormalization function Z(p) and the nonperturbative mass function M(p) for a variety of bare masses. We perform a simple extrapolation to the chiral limit for these functions. We clearly observe the dynamically generated infrared mass and confirm the qualitative behavior found for the Landau gauge quark propagator in earlier studies. We attempt to extract the quark condensate from the asymptotic behavior of the mass function in the chiral limit.

Coexistence of 1D and 2D topology and genesis of Dirac cones in the chiral Aubry-André model

Abstract:We construct a one-dimensional (1D) topological SSH-like model with chiral symmetry and a superimposed hopping modulation, which we call the chiral Aubry-André model. We show that its topological properties can be described in terms of a pair (C,W) of a two-dimensional (2D) Chern number C, stemming from a superspace description of the model, and a 1D winding number W, originating in its chiral symmetric nature. Thus, we showcase for the first time explicit coexistence of 1D and 2D topology in a model existing in 1D physical space. We detail the superspace description by showcasing how our model can be mapped to a Harper-Hofstadter model, familiar from the description of the integer quantum Hall effect, and analyze the vanishing field limit analytically. An extension of the method used for vanishing fields is provided in order to handle any finite fields, corresponding to hopping modulations both commensurate and incommensurate with the lattice. In addition, this formalism allows us to obtain certain features of the 2D superspace model, such as its number of massless Dirac nodes, purely in terms of topological quantities, computed without the need to go into momentum space.

Abstract:The overlap fermion offers the tremendous advantage of exact chiral symmetry on the lattice, but is numerically intensive. This can be made affordable while still providing large lattice volumes, by using coarse lattice spacing, given that good scaling and localization properties are established. Here, using overlap fermions on quenched Iwasaki gauge configurations, we demonstrate directly that the overlap Dirac operator's range is comfortably small in lattice units for each of the lattice spacings 0.20 fm, 0.17 fm, and 0.13 fm (and scales to zero in physical units in the continuum limit). In particular, our direct results contradict recent speculation that an inverse lattice spacing of $1 {\rm GeV}$ is too low to have satisfactory localization. Furthermore, hadronic masses (available on the two coarser lattices) scale very well.
