Abstract:SSp has been used to estimate extracellular volume in PI. However, the kinetic model used may not apply to PI. We therefore studied SSp in 10 PI(BW1.2±0.3kg;GA29±1.7wks). A single IV dose of 0.6mmol/kg sucrose was given on dayl, repeated on day4 in 5 PI. Results, Conclusions: (1) SSp in PI was twice that in adults. This prolongs sucrose distribution. (2) Only at 3,4,and 5h post injection (pi) sucrose elimination followed 1st order kinetics. Previous studies included the 2h value (incomplete distribution) thus underestimating SSp by about 8% (3) Early distribution was studied in 2 cases only (ethical committee directive). Sucrose disappearance curve was resolved into 3 exponential functions. k3(0.39/min) and k2(0.04/min) were similar in the 2 PI. k1(n=15;0.0011 ± 0.0007/min) was increasing with increasing urinary output (p<0.05) (4) SSp calculated from only 2 samples at 3 and 5hpi was as accurate (n = 15; + 0.4± 1.7%) as SSp calculated from 3 samples at 3,4 and 5h pi, allowing to reduce the number of samples. This is crucial if studying SSp in Pi.

Abstract:In this work we show that the latest LHC data on multiplicity moments $C_2-C_5$ are well described by a two-step model in the form of a convolution of the Poisson distribution with energy-dependent source function. For the source function we take $\Gamma$ Negative Binomial Distribution. No unexpected behavior of Negative Binomial Distribution parameter $k$ is found. We give also predictions for the higher energies of 10 and 14 TeV.

Abstract:A study of the first four moments (mean, variance, skewness, and kurtosis) and their products ($\kappa\sigma^{2}$ and $S\sigma$) of the net-charge and net-proton distributions in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{\rm s_{NN}}$ = 7.7-200 GeV from HIJING simulations has been carried out. The skewness and kurtosis and the collision volume independent products $\kappa\sigma^{2}$ and $S\sigma$ have been proposed as sensitive probes for identifying the presence of a QCD critical point. A discrete probability distribution that effectively describes the separate positively and negatively charged particle (or proton and anti-proton) multiplicity distributions is the negative binomial (or binomial) distribution (NBD/BD). The NBD/BD has been used to characterize particle production in high-energy particle and nuclear physics. Their application to the higher moments of the net-charge and net-proton distributions is examined. Differences between $\kappa\sigma^{2}$ and a statistical Poisson assumption of a factor of four (for net-charge) and 40% (for net-protons) can be accounted for by the NBD/BD. This is the first application of the properties of the NBD/BD to describe the behavior of the higher moments of net-charge and net-proton distributions in nucleus-nucleus collisions.

Abstract:Within the ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics model, in which the Lorentz covariant treatment of nuclear mean-field potential is considered, the fluctuations of net-baryon, net-charge, and deuteron multiplicity distributions in Au + Au head-on collisions at root s(NN) = 3.0-5.0 GeV are calculated. The results show that the nuclear mean-field potential can significantly enhance the magnitude of baryon number fluctuations in narrow rapidity windows, and this enhancement rapidly weakens with increasing beam energy. However, for proton and net-charge number fluctuations, the mean-field effects are less noticeable than that for baryon number. In addition, for net-charge number fluctuations, the negative binomial distribution agrees well with the calculated results at the midpseudorapidity window. Finally, the event-by-event fluctuations of deuteron number in the coalescence production picture are calculated as well, and it is found that its cumulant ratios decrease linearly with increasing the average multiplicity of deuterons per event, i.e., increase with increasing beam energy.

Abstract:Abstract : It is clear that excited atomic and molecular species play an important role in reentry phenomena. To understand and predict these phenomena, measured cross sections involving the excited species are required. A practical and general method of producing beams of metastable atoms and molecules is needed in order to measure these cross sections. For this use, nearresonant electron capture reactions are shown to produce excited neutral beams from ion beams with high efficiency. Total electron capture cross sections have been measured for the ions He(+) and Ar(+) in Rb and Cs in the energy range from 10 to 1500 eV. In these reactions, near energy resonances with the lowest metastable and allowed excited states of He and Ar occur, and capture into these states should be preferred. Cross sections ranging from 0.3 to 1.7 x 10 to the -14 power sq. cm were measured, the magnitude of which indicates that most of the reactions lead to excited states. A preliminary experiment with N2(+) in Na gives strong indication of efficient production of excited N2.

Abstract:Fluctuations of the baryon number in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are a promising observable to explore the structure of the QCD phase diagram. The cumulant ratios in heavy ion collisions at intermediate energies ($\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} < 7$ GeV) have not been studied to date. We investigate the effects of mean field potential and clustering on the cumulant ratios of baryon and proton number distributions in Au+Au collisions at beam energy of 1.23 GeV$/$nucleon as measured by the HADES Collaboration at GSI. Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) and the JAM model are used to calculate the cumulants with different mean field potentials. It is found that the cumulant ratios are strongly time dependent. At the early stage, the effects of the potentials on the fluctuations of the particle multiplicity in momentum space are relatively weak. The mean fields enhance the fluctuations during the expansion stage, especially for small rapidity acceptance windows. The enhancement of cumulant ratios for free protons is strongly suppressed as compared to that for all baryons. The mean field potentials and the clustering play an important role for the measured cumulant ratios at intermediate energy.

Abstract:The Fokker-Planck equation is considered, which is connected to the birth and death process with immigration by the Poisson transform. The fractional derivative in time variable is introduced into the Fokker-Planck equation. From its solution (the probability density function), the generating function (GF) for the corresponding probability distribution is derived. We consider the case when the GF reduces to that of the negative binomial distribution (NBD), if the fractional derivative is replaced to the ordinary one. Formulas of the factorial moment and the $H_j$ moment are derived from the GF. The $H_j$ moment derived from the GF of the NBD decreases monotonously as the rank j increases. However, the $H_j$ moment derived in our approach oscillates, which is contrasted with the case of the NBD. Calculated $H_j$ moments are compared with those given from the data in $p\bar{p}$ collisions and in $e^+e^-$ collisions.

Abstract:The negative binomial distribution (NBD) has been theorized to express a scale-invariant property of many-body systems and has been consistently shown to outperform other statistical models in both describing the multiplicity of quantum-scale events in particle collision experiments and predicting the prevalence of cosmological observables, such as the number of galaxies in a region of space. Despite its widespread applicability and empirical success in these contexts, a theoretical justification for the NBD from first principles has remained elusive for fifty years. The accuracy of the NBD in modeling hadronic, leptonic, and semileptonic processes is suggestive of a highly general principle, which is yet to be understood. This study demonstrates that a statistical event of the NBD can in fact be derived in a general context via the dynamical equations of a canonical ensemble of particles in Minkowski space. These results describe a fundamental feature of many-body systems that is consistent with data from the ALICE and ATLAS experiments and provides an explanation for the emergence of the NBD in these multiplicity observations. Two methods are used to derive this correspondence: the Feynman path integral and a hypersurface parametrization of a propagating ensemble.

Abstract:Experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have measured multiplicity distributions in proton-proton collisions at a new domain of center-of-mass energy ($\sqrt {s}$) in limited pseudorapidity intervals. We analyze multiplicity distribution data of proton-proton collisions at LHC energies as measured by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment in terms of characteristic parameters of the Negative Binomial Distribution (NBD) function that has played a significant role in describing multiplicity distribution data of particle production in high energy physics experiments, in the pre-LHC energy-range, in various kinds of collisions for a wide range of collision energy and for different kinematic ranges. Beside a single NBD, we apply the formalism of weighted superposition of two NBDs to examine if the multiplicity distribution data of CMS could be better explained. The weighted superposition of two NBDs indeed explain the distribution data better at the highest available LHC energy and in large interval of phase space. The two-NBD formalism further reveals that the energy invariance of the multiplicity distribution of the "soft" component of particle production in hadronic collisions is valid at LHC also, as it is at RHIC and Tevatron. We analyze the data further in terms of clan parameters in the framework of the two-NBD model.

Abstract:In continuation of our earlier work, in which we analysed the charged particle multiplicities in leptonic and hadronic interactions at different center of mass energies in full phase space as well as in restricted phase space with the shifted Gompertz distribution, a detailed analysis of the normalized and factorial moments is reported here. A two-component model in which probability distribution function is obtained from the superposition of two shifted Gompertz distributions introduced in our earlier work has also been used for the analysis. This is the first analysis of the moments with the shifted Gompertz distribution. Analysis has also been done to predict the moments of multiplicity distribution for the electron-positron collisions at c.m. energy of 500 GeV at a future Collider.

Abstract:The E-802 Collaboration at the BNL-AGS has measured charged particle multiplicity distributions from central (ZCAL) collisions of $^{16}\mathrm{O}$+Cu at 14.6A GeV/c as a function of the pseudorapidity interval \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\ge}0.1 in the range 1.2\ensuremath{\le}\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\le}2.2. The fluctuations of these distributions as a function of the pseudorapidity interval have been studied by the method of normalized factorial moments and also by directly fitting the measurements to negative binomial distributions (NBD). Excellent fits to NBD were obtained in all \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta} bins, allowing, for the first time, a systematic formulation of the subject of intermittency in terms of distributions to complement the description based on normalized factorial moments. In agreement with all previous measurements of NBD fits to multiplicity distributions in hadron and lepton reactions, the k parameter of the NBD fit for central $^{16}\mathrm{O}$+Cu collisions is found to exhibit an apparently linear increase with the \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta} interval, albeit with a much steeper slope than for other reactions, and a nonzero intercept, k(0)\ensuremath{\ne}0. The evolution of the NBD parameter k(\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}) is used to determine the two-particle short-range rapidity correlation length for central $^{16}\mathrm{O}$+Cu collisions, \ensuremath{\xi}=0.18\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05, which is much shorter than the value \ensuremath{\xi}\ensuremath{\sim}1--3 for hadron collisions, but this is a quantitative rather than a qualitative difference. These results lead to a simple and elegant explanation of the intermittency formalism, without resort to fractals, for all reactions, which demystifies intermittency---for $^{16}\mathrm{O}$+Cu central collisions, intermittency is nothing more than the apparent statistical independence of the multiplicity in small pseudorapidity bins, \ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\sim}0.2, due to the surprisingly short two-particle rapidity correlation length.

Abstract:Fractional derivative in time variable is introduced into the Fokker-Planck equation of a population growth model. It's solution, the KNO scaling function, is transformed into the generating function for the multiplicity distribution. Formulas of the factorial moment and the $H_j$ moment are derived from the generating function, which reduces to that of the negative binomial distribution (NBD), if the fractional derivative is replaced to the ordinary one. In our approach, oscillation of $H_j$ moment appears contrary to the case of the NBD. Calculated $H_j$ moments are compared with those given from the data in $p\bar{p}$ collisions and in $e^+e^-$ collisions.

Multiparticle azimuthal cumulants in p+Pb collisions from a multiphase transport model

Abstract:A new subevent cumulant method was recently developed, which can significantly reduce the non-flow contributions in long-range correlations for small systems compared to the standard cumulant method. In this work, we study multi-particle cumulants in $p$+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV with a multiphase transport model (AMPT), including two- and four-particle cumulants ($c_{2}\{2\}$ and $c_{2}\{4\}$) and symmetric cumulants [SC(2, 3) and SC(2, 4)]. Our numerical results show that $v_{2}\{2\}$ is consistent with the experimental data, while the magnitude of $c_{2}\{4\}$ is smaller than the experimental data, which may indicate either the collectivity is underestimated or some dynamical fluctuations are absent in the AMPT model. For the symmetric cumulants, we find that the results from the standard cumulant method are consistent with the experimental data, but those from the subevent cumulant method show different behaviors. The results indicate that the measurements from the standard cumulant method are contaminated by non-flow effects, especially when the number of produced particles is small. The subevent cumulant method is a better tool to explore the $real$ collectivity in small systems.

Cumulants of multiplicity distributions in most-central heavy-ion collisions

Abstract:I investigate the volume corrections on cumulants of total charge distributions and net proton distributions. The required volume information is generated by an optical Glauber model. I find that the corrected statistical expectations of multiplicity distributions mimic the negative binomial distributions at non-central collisions, and they tend to approach the Poisson ones at most-central collisions due to the "boundary effects," which suppress the volume corrections. However, net proton distributions and reference multiplicity distributions are sensitive to the external volume fluctuations at most-central collisions, which imply that one has to consider the details of volume distributions in event-by-event multiplicity fluctuation studies.

Abstract:In this research, we analyze transverse momentum cumulants of different orders ( ) for charged inclusive hadrons produced in collisions using the UrQMD-3.4 model events. The analysis is carried out in two ways: with the standard method, in which the study is carried out over the entire rapidity interval, and also with the sub-event method, which suppresses the influence of short-range correlations. Dependencies of second-, third-, and fourth-order cumulants on collision energy were obtained. The paper also provides a comparison of and collisions that indicated the simultaneous saturation for both systems at GeV.

How to retrieve additional information from the multiplicity distributions

Abstract:Multiplicity distributions $P(N)$ measured in multiparticle production processes are most frequently described by the Negative Binomial Distribution (NBD). However, with increasing collision energy some systematic discrepancies become more and more apparent. They are usually attributed to the possible multi-source structure of the production process and described using a multi-NBD form of the multiplicity distribution. We investigate the possibility of keeping a single NBD but with its parameters depending on the multiplicity $N$. This is done by modifying the widely known clan model of particle production leading to the NBD form of $P(N)$. This is then confronted with the approach based on the so-called cascade-stochastic formalism which is based on different types of recurrence relations defining $P(N)$. We demonstrate that a combination of both approaches allows the retrieval of additional valuable information from the multiplicity distributions, namely the oscillatory behavior of the counting statistics apparently visible in the high energy data.
